Want To Repair A Corrupt File
Sep 14, 2002I have a excel file which is corrupt. The message show" The file may be read only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or the server the document is stored on may not be responding". I want to know is it can recovery it or not. I have use many software and still can't fix it.
The file size is around 4.5MB.

came to the conclusion that the file is corrupt. I could not determine if there was an easy way to recover it. I do not have a backup that I can use. I've never had a file simply corrupt
The macro itself works fine, which to me signals that the file isn't actually corrupt.
Recover Corrupt File
Mar 12, 2007I have a client who has a very complex Excel file with lots of Visual Basic programming. The file has been corrupted somehow, and he doesn't have a backup. Needless to say, he is now a strong proponent of backing up on a regular basis.
He's tried downloading trials of a couple Excel recovery programs, but no luck. He even sent the file to a company who made one of the recovery programs, and they said the file was unrecoverable.

Apr 18, 2006I was working on a tax file yesturday, just a long long list of receipts. and the file is password protected. However, I went to open it today, and I get a message that says: "Filename.xls cannot be opened. the file may be read only, or you may be trying to access a read only location. Or, the server the file is located on may not be responding."
It's on my USB Drive. I've tried copying it to my HD so I can play with a copy, but no dice. When I try that, I get another error message, : Cannot copy Filename.xls. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. I've tried the various fixed suggested in the excel help files to no avail. I did a search on the forum, but didn't find anything that seemed to apply or help me. The computer I'm trying to open it on has Office 2003, the one I most recently worked on the file on has office XP. Not sure if this was a source of the problem. Doesn't seem like it should be. Hasn't been in the past. I'm not even getting to the dialogue box asking for my password yet.
Corrupt Excel File - How To Recover Data
Oct 9, 2011I was using solidworks and a datatable, which is just an excel file, got corrupt.
I killed solidworks in the middle of the process and chances are it didn't get finished updating the file.
In any case, I opened the file and I see some of the data but it is not compressed like the other excel files of similar data. It seems to be a raw binary excel file(not xml) and has some readable text and cell values.
Is there any way to recover the data? I'm sure it's there(it may be partially corrupted or just may not be in the correct binary format that excel is expecting.

May 27, 2009When opening a new Excel file, it is asking me for a password to an old excel file that was password protected, which I have deleted from my computer. It is still asking for this password every time I open a new or existing file. When I hit cancel it lets me open the file.

Each spreadsheet is password protected, and the password is the same for all spreadsheet to stop casual browsing only. I have set the password.
When I run the macro, I have to type the password in each instance, ie 20 or more times for 2 or more files.
Anyone know the code to insert so the spreadsheet opens without my typing the password.

Jul 12, 2012My boss has come to me and asked how does she get her file to go back to the way it was before, she had a password on the file but you used to be able to click on a button that said "Read only" this button no longer appears and i am unable to get it back. I still get the password box pop up but it is smaller and does not contain the read only button.

May 8, 2009In wrote a workbook in Excel 2003 that is causing me a problem I can not seem to figure out. The workbook consists of multiple worksheets that work using both VBA code or cell formulas. The worksheets are protected (though w/o a password) to prevent users from accidently altering a cell formula. When the code needs to write to a cell, it first unprotects the sheet, writes to the cell(s), and then reprotects the sheet.
Everything seems to work fine, often for several months. Then somehow something goes wrong. Specifically, after double-clicking on the ListBox in the worksheet “CRI Calculator” to pick a drug name, it will improperly present a dialog box (see attached screen capture 'Unprotect Sheet DialogBox.JPG') prompting the user for a password to unprotect the worksheet. Again, no password has ever been set; I have tried entering nothing, “password”, and "anonymous". Regardless of how you respond, an error code “Run-time error ‘1004’: The password you supplied is not correct…” occurs. If I press Debug, it takes me (ironically) to the following line of code

But I want the system to see if the file exists in its folder or if the file is password protected (for opening). Aug 1, 20061. In centain directory I have xls files where name of each file starts from "HR" string, eg. "HG_Control Mike.xls", ora "HR_Control Mark.xls".
2. I have a master xls file where I want to start a macro that will open each of xls "HR" files and copy selected rows to this master xls workbook (need to write this one too).
Problem is that opening of every "HR" files suposed to be protected by password. Users will be adding new xls "HR" files to the directory so I will not be able to change macro everytime new xls is added. So, I need to make a macro that will generate password base on xls "HR" file name and then I will use this password to protect this files and open them by another macro.

Linking To Column In Another Excel File And Removing Empty Cells?
Jul 15, 2013Let's say I have 2 files: Source file and working file. In source file there are some text names in a column that are updated once in a while.
1. I need to create a column in "working file" such that is taking values from column in "source file" even when "source file" is closed.
2. It should take only non empty values, because I need to create a cell with validation list that consists of text names from the column.
Solving attempt: By searching some solutions in forum I found that the first part I can do in the following way: copy column from "source file", select in "working file" a "paste special" option and choose "paste link". It works, but the problem is that it imports all the column: if in "source file" the column consists of words "a" (cell A1), "b" (cell A2) and all other cells in A column are empty - in "working file", after linking, it appears as "a" (cell A1), "b" (cell A2) and all other cells in A column are "0" (zeros) till cell A65536. And I need that in "working file" column after linking will appear as "a" (cell A1), "b" (cell A2) and all other cells will be empty, so by setting one of cells in B column to be a list (by "Data" - "Data validation" - "List" ) - it will consist only from "a" and "b", and not from "a", "b", "0", "0", "0", .... (65534 zeros).

I've tried both of these and the Excel file is still attached with XML to the query table. I get an error message saying the format is different then if you click okay it shows its connected to the database still. Is there an aggressive command that will severe all connections before saving? What commands to run to stop this connection after save to another workbook?

To try and repair it, use the Open and Repair command in the open dialog (File Menu) and select extract data when prompted. I am having trouble following those suggestions, Open an Repair doesnt' seem to be an option on the file menu. I have Excel 2003, is there any way to recover our workbook?
