How to modify a custom cell format to make data entry easier.
My goal is to have the output look like this: 'A12B-C20D: SET 10: Text string here'
Inputs needed are:
1-3 digit number between A & B 1-3 digit number between C & D 1-2 digit number after SET Text string of variable length
Where I am stuck. So far I can get "A12B-C20D: SET 10:" to show up properly when 122010 is input. The custom format I am using looks like this: "A"##"B-C"##"D: SET "##": "
When I try to incorporate the "@" symbol the first part of the formatting goes away and the output shows up as "122010 Text string here".
I have tried: "A"###"B-C"###"D: SET "##":";;-;_@ "A"###"B-C"###"D: SET "##": ";;@ "A"###"B-C"###"D: SET "##":";_@ "A"###"B-C"###"D: SET "##": ";;;@
I would to show the number like this if it hasn't decimal like 2 showing in 2 not 2.0 and if it has decimal like 1.5 show 1.5, 1.75 show 1.75.... 1 1.5 0.5 2 1.75 0.25 Now I try this "_(* #,##0.0_);_(* (#,##0);_(* "-"??_);_(@_)"
I need a custom number format to do the following: When a whole number, shows only whole number (no decimal place) When decimal, show decimal. For example, have this data show as typed:
45 (not 45.0) 32 6.7 43.5 87
I can't figure out a format to allow this. The closest I get is: ??.? but that gives me: 45. 32. 6.7 43.5 87.
I can't figure out how to use the custom number formatting to get 20130522A to display as 2013 05 22A. I don't care if it has to be 2013 05 22 A, the extra space is fine.
I have been googling and trying different things and I cant get anything to work. All of the characters can be text, there will always be 4 characters, a space, 2 characters, a space, and the remaining 3 characters. It seems as though it should be so simple to add two spaces into a fixed length string, but I guess not.
In I34 I have the same date again, except formatted as MMMM YYYY so its showing "March 2009".
In G10, I want the cell to read: Number at end of March 2009, with the month and year being taken from the date range. To be honest, I can get the year okay using the Year() function but cant get the month as cant convert it back from a numeric.
I have a range of cells with numeric values or blanks. I set up a Conditional Formatting rule with this range selected: New Rule > Format only cells that contain > Format only cells with: Blanks; then I set the formatting to a light green fill and on the Number tab > Category = Custom > Type: "blank"
The blank fields get the light green fill, but no text; that is, the value displayed is still blank.
I go back to edit the CF rule and change Blanks to No Blanks. The results are what I expect: the cells with numbers display the text blank and have a green fill; the blank cells have no fill (white).
This is my testing criteria. I eventually want the empty cells to display 0 (zero). I tried setting Custom > Type: 0 (the number placeholder zero) and Type: "0" (literally the number zero), and neither works.
I have tried this with Format only cells with Cell Value equal to [the address of a blank cell].
I tried to set the value as "" but kept getting =""""; and ="" became ="=""" ???
I have tried this with Use a Formula... using the len()=0, isblank(), and other approaches, all with the same results.
I also made sure the option [x] Show a zero in cells that have a zero value is checked.
With all approaches to identifying the blank cells, they ARE obviously being recognized as blank values: the fill color is being applied to the right cells; and when Not Blank is the criterion (or a negation of a formula), the blank ones are not formatted. But blank cells will not display the text as defined in the Custom Formatting.
And this isn't an issue of "If the cell displays 'blank' it's no longer blank, so the rule doesn't apply" - HERE'S WHY: I set up a second CF rule that sets the Font to red when the value is greater than zero and had this CF rule follow the CF rule for No Blanks (the test above that works). Cells with positive numbers displayed blank in red, cells with zeros or negative numbers displayed blank in black. This clarified that the actual value of the cell is being evaluated, not the displayed value after Custom formatting is applied.
I have been playing with custom formats recently and I'm wondering if there is anyway to make them wrap?
specifically I have several results that I have been formatting to show what they are related to
397235 visitors 392648 visitors 365487 visitors
I want these to display as visitors, but still be numbers so that they can be summed etc. The problem is that I need the text to wrap so that visitors is on the second line in the cell. unfortunatley all i get is a ########## error to show the cell is not wide enough even with wrap text turned on.
I would like to format a row of cells. I want each cell in the row to contain (and show) both an interger and text. The interger will range in value from one to ~10,000. The text will always be two characters long...but these characters will change from cell to cell.
Elsewhere in the spreadsheet I will have a cell (w/ a formula) that counts the values of the intergers in the row, but ignores the text in each cell.
This is my formula and it returns: -55 bps. =[ASK.xls]QTR!$AT$81&" "&"bps"
However, I want it to return (55 bps). I don't want to just add the parenthesis because in the future this formula could return a positive number. I tried to format the cell differently, but that did not work.
how can you custom a cell format in which you may in type in information that is displayed as ###-##-####-@# I searched everywhere and cannot find this.
For example, a medicare number.
I would need to type in 581566223b6, and it should be displayed as 581-56-2236-B6.
I am trying to insert custom formatting into a cell so when I enter a set of 9 numbers for phone numbers in the U.S. and 14 numbers for international phone numbers, it will automatically display it in the correct format. Reason for the 0's on the international is because country codes often start with a 0, so I need to ensure it isn't removed from the number.
I have a worksheet that has a number in cell K5 - the number is generated on "file open" code and is custom formatted as "TN"0000. Thus 1 appears as TN0001, 2 as TN0002 and so on. I am trying to save a copy of the workbook based on the this cells contents i.e. TN0001.xls, TN0002.xls etc. but the files are saved as 1.xls or 2.xls. The code I am using is
is it possible to custom format a cell in order to:
a) Present 3.33333 as 3.33 (max. of 2 decimal digits or less) b) Present 3.333 as 3.33 c) Present 3.33 as 3.33 d) Present 3.3 as 3.3 e) Present 3 as 3 (NO zeros and NO decimal dot)
I have two columns, one is with number and one is with text, what i have to do concate both columns data in one column with formatting. but when i m adding with & operator or by concatenate, formatting disappear.
My question is that I would like to have a macro that runs on this basic file and creates a bar graph with the data. Then it utilizes the RGB values in the column to change the specific bar for that row.
My problem is that my VLOOKUP formula will not return any data when it doesn't like the format of the data it's looking up.
Example: I have a spreadsheet that displays revenues earned by assets.Every month I export a table of data from an accounting software program with (a) asset numbers, (b) invoice date, and (c) monthly revenues. Then I copy the data into Tab 2 of my spreadsheet. On Tab 1 of the spreadsheet there is a table that lists Assets 100 through 120. Column A has all the asset numbers. Each month it varies as to which assets earned revenue and which one's did not. Usually between 10 and 15 assets earn revenue in any given month and about 5 do not earn revenue. On Tab 1 there is a column with VLOOKUP formulas that looks up the asset number in column A of Tab 1 and points to Tab 2 where the data that was exported from the accounting software program is located.Let's say that in July 2012 that Asset 1001 earned $35,000.On certain months, the VLOOKUP formula looks over to tab 2 and "returns" the $35,000 revenue with no problem. On other months, it will not return anything, apparently it does not like the formatting and does not "recognize" the asset number.
For making quotes at work, I'm looking to have the quotes named automatically. The format of naming our quotes is the date (in this format) then quote name: yymmddNAME (Example for today: 090720EXCEL)
I'm using the =NOW() function for the date (Cell A1), then doing a custom format to turn the format into yymmdd then in a different cell I'm putting in the "NAME" (Cell A2) and what I want to do is combine the 2 cells (Cell A3) by doing: =A1 & A2 but when i do this, the format of the date gets messed up.
I am trying to format a cell (in Excel 2010) as a phone number. The problemis that the data comes over from our download as text. Is there an easier way then using the 'SUBSTITUTE' function to change format to a true phone number (so that we can mail merge into WORD)? Since it is extracted out as a text, using the 'phone number' format (under special) will not work. Using the 'SUBSTITUTE' formula to remove the parenthesis', the dash and the space work but is cumbersome.
Below is an example of the text format that is being extracted: (706) 378-7585
Ive created a pivot table which looks at an Access Database in the form of a Cube. One field has numbers in, but when it comes through as a cube, it treats these numbers as text. So when I have a the rows as this field, they appear in text order, eg. 1, 10, 100, 101, 2 etc (instead of 1,2, 3, 4 etc). How can I get this field to be recognised as a number field in the pivot? (its a number field in the access database). Ive applied a sort to the data where Ive made my own custom list, but this is just a temporary fix. Can i specifiy somewhere that this field is a number and should be treated as such??
I have a text file that I need to open in MS Excel 2007. The file contains the following data. (Each column is delimited by the "|" character.)
Part #|Inventory ID 1743|213,221 1864|10,40 1948|1170,1180 5265|100,104,107,10004
Ultimately, I need three columns but the data needs to look the same as it did before I opened the file.
When I open the file for the first time, I use “Text to Columns” to delimit the fields by the "|" character. The problem is that the Inventory IDs in the middle column get a bit whacky.
Here's what I'm left with: Part # Inventory ID 1743 213,221 1864 10,40 1948 11,701,180 5265 10,010,410,710,004
The comma is retained appropriately when there are two 2- or 3-digit Inventory IDs.
When a row has multiple, longer Inventory IDs or Inventory IDs that vary in length, the comma is moved to every 3rd decimal place.
I tried putting quotation marks around the data before I opened the text file for the first time but that didn’t do anything. I tried Custom Formatting to retain the comma position (0000,0000) but this only worked when I had two 4 digit IDs. I also changed the number type to Text and General. Once the comma was changed, I couldn’t figure out how to get it back.
How to best retain the format of my Inventory IDs.
I have a spread sheet where there are multiple rows of price quotes from different suppliers.
Some suppliers have quoted, some however have not and there is a "#N/A" or "no bid".
SupplierA SupplierB SupplierC SupplierD
1.3 No Bid 2.3 No Bid
How can I get a conditional format to check each row for the lowest numeric bid, highlight it but ignore the text?? What I have tried so far doesn't work.
=G31=MAX($G$31:$J$31)
This does not seem to work, I don't know how to exclude the text values from the MAX function.
