I have a cell that contains numbers and text.
example: 1-2-3-4-5-6 or 1-22-3-44-5-6.
If the the number between the dash '-' is a single digit (less than 9), I want to insert a leading zero so all 6 numbers are 2 digits.
Is this possible with custom formatting? I tried a custom for of:
00"-"00"-"00"-"00"-"00"-"00
and it is not working.
I also tried using a MID formula but it gets quite complex identifying the location of the dash - is there an easier way than the MID or LEN?

My problem is that my VLOOKUP formula will not return any data when it doesn't like the format of the data it's looking up.
Example: I have a spreadsheet that displays revenues earned by assets.Every month I export a table of data from an accounting software program with (a) asset numbers, (b) invoice date, and (c) monthly revenues. Then I copy the data into Tab 2 of my spreadsheet. On Tab 1 of the spreadsheet there is a table that lists Assets 100 through 120. Column A has all the asset numbers. Each month it varies as to which assets earned revenue and which one's did not. Usually between 10 and 15 assets earn revenue in any given month and about 5 do not earn revenue. On Tab 1 there is a column with VLOOKUP formulas that looks up the asset number in column A of Tab 1 and points to Tab 2 where the data that was exported from the accounting software program is located.Let's say that in July 2012 that Asset 1001 earned $35,000.On certain months, the VLOOKUP formula looks over to tab 2 and "returns" the $35,000 revenue with no problem. On other months, it will not return anything, apparently it does not like the formatting and does not "recognize" the asset number.

I am trying to format a cell (in Excel 2010) as a phone number. The problemis that the data comes over from our download as text. Is there an easier way then using the 'SUBSTITUTE' function to change format to a true phone number (so that we can mail merge into WORD)? Since it is extracted out as a text, using the 'phone number' format (under special) will not work. Using the 'SUBSTITUTE' formula to remove the parenthesis', the dash and the space work but is cumbersome.
Below is an example of the text format that is being extracted: (706) 378-7585

Conditional Formating Text equaling to Number formats:
Example:
C20 is '436.59 (its pasted as text often is must remain as text) and D20 is 436.9535
I want D20 to have only 2 decimals and turn green if it equals C20. And turn red if it doesnt equal C20.

Ive created a pivot table which looks at an Access Database in the form of a Cube. One field has numbers in, but when it comes through as a cube, it treats these numbers as text. So when I have a the rows as this field, they appear in text order, eg. 1, 10, 100, 101, 2 etc (instead of 1,2, 3, 4 etc). How can I get this field to be recognised as a number field in the pivot? (its a number field in the access database). Ive applied a sort to the data where Ive made my own custom list, but this is just a temporary fix. Can i specifiy somewhere that this field is a number and should be treated as such??

I have a text file that I need to open in MS Excel 2007. The file contains the following data. (Each column is delimited by the "|" character.)
Part #|Inventory ID
1743|213,221
1864|10,40
1948|1170,1180
5265|100,104,107,10004
Ultimately, I need three columns but the data needs to look the same as it did before I opened the file.
When I open the file for the first time, I use “Text to Columns” to delimit the fields by the "|" character. The problem is that the Inventory IDs in the middle column get a bit whacky.
Here's what I'm left with:
Part # Inventory ID
1743 213,221
1864 10,40
1948 11,701,180
5265 10,010,410,710,004
The comma is retained appropriately when there are two 2- or 3-digit Inventory IDs.
When a row has multiple, longer Inventory IDs or Inventory IDs that vary in length, the comma is moved to every 3rd decimal place.
I tried putting quotation marks around the data before I opened the text file for the first time but that didn’t do anything. I tried Custom Formatting to retain the comma position (0000,0000) but this only worked when I had two 4 digit IDs. I also changed the number type to Text and General. Once the comma was changed, I couldn’t figure out how to get it back.
How to best retain the format of my Inventory IDs.

I have a spread sheet where there are multiple rows of price quotes from different suppliers.
Some suppliers have quoted, some however have not and there is a "#N/A" or "no bid".
SupplierA
SupplierB
SupplierC
SupplierD
1.3
No Bid
2.3
No Bid
How can I get a conditional format to check each row for the lowest numeric bid, highlight it but ignore the text?? What I have tried so far doesn't work.
=G31=MAX($G$31:$J$31)
This does not seem to work, I don't know how to exclude the text values from the MAX function.

I wrote an excel program in Excel'03 for a dental office to manage state assistance patients and one of the table columns is the state assistance number. The problem is that the program defaults to a number format when it is entered instead of a text format, which is what I want. The issue is that state assistance numbers are always 8 digits and when it defaults to a number field the program drops the required preceeding zeros.
For example the number 00123456 will sometimes show up as 123456, which is wrong. It's like sometimes it will show up right and other times it gets a butterfly in its brain and deletes those zeros irritating the receptionist here. So, how do I get the table to either stay in text format or set up a number format that keeps the preceeding zeros?

I have a workbook with numerous worksheets that contain text, steps actually. I would like to select all common words and change their formatting to bold. Every time I try however, it formats the entire cell in bold. Is there a way to isolate just the word "click" for instance in all the cells in each worksheet and change the formatting to bold, and leave the other text within the cell normal?

Is there a function that allows you to read column A for an ID (these may or may not include letters/numbers/"?", are non-sequential and are of variable lengths) and, if it is the first time that it has seen an ID column B will read "sample_1_arm_1", if its the second time it has seen an id it will read "sample_2_arm_1", etc? An example of what I am trying to do on a much larger scale:
id
event_name
C83-858
sample_1_arm_1

I have an excel spreadsheet, that is 11,000 lines (give or take) and in column A, I have a sequence of numbers on every line set up like this:
11-22-333-44W5
What I want to do is add the number "100/" to the begining of every number sequence. If I have to manually add it, I have to go down 11,000 Lines and add it to every line, is there a way to just tell excel to add the number "100/" and down fill it for everyline - end result will look like:
100/11-22-333-44W5

Text to Number or General.xlsx
The included, small database is formatted as text. It is a text feed from an outside source. I simply want to format the cells into either numbers or general format but not text... seems simple, and it should be, but the only way I can get this done is to go to each cell and access the formula bar and re-enter the number by pressing Enter.

I have two columns of cells that need to be reformatted: B and C. In the B column excel is reading the cells as time (0:41:55.0), I need it to display those cells as a number like this: 00 41 55.0. In column C the cells look like this: 41 : 09 : 47.3. I need the C column cells to look just like the formatted B column cells (41 09 47.3) Also, even though they have the spaces, the numbers should be read by excel as one whole number (i.e. 41 09 47.3 would be used in a calculation as 410947.3)

I have a dropdown box to select sizes.
e.g.
0929
0930
0931
09.2529
09.2530
09.2531
09.529
09.530
09.531
My issue is if I format the number to accept 4 decimal places the 09.529 number becomes 09.5290. I don't know what I can do to fix this as some need 4 decimal places and others will require none.

Is there a way to format a number within a sentence? i.e.
In cell A1 I have 2,000 entered and formatted as a number. In cell A2 I type in ="How can I format "&A1&" ?"
When I do this, the result in A2 is How can I format 2000?
Is there a way to format the 2000 to show the thousand separator comma? If the number were -2,000 instead, is there a way to show both the comma and parentheses around the number? (without putting the parentheses manually into the formula)?

I am trying to figure out why my number will not format correctly... I have a number thats value is pulled in via external data that gets updated everyday.
Everything works fine there, but I needed the format of that number that was pulled in to have parenthesis around it...
I know that one can add the parenthesis to the number by using the ="("&(Number)&")" function...
What the problem is is that when I add the parenthesis to the number it will not allow me to view it as a percentage; it will leave it as a full general number (Ex. (0.0006), instead of (0.06%)
Is there a way to get the percentage number format back?

Is there any way to turn a number that is in general/text format into a date?
IE:
82005
92005
102005
to read:
8/2005 or Aug'05
9/2005 or Sep'05
10/2005 or Oct'05
I have tried using IF statements and it looks like there's a limit in the amount of scenerios you can have. I get data in text format that comes to me in numbers and I'm just looking to turn those numbers into dates so I can sort them properly.

Dim cell As Range
On Error Resume Next
Selection.ClearComments
On Error GoTo 0
For Each cell In Intersect(Selection, ActiveSheet.UsedRange)
If cell.Formula "" Then
cell.AddComment
cell.Comment.Visible = False
On Error Resume Next 'fails on invalid formula
cell.Comment.Text Text:=" Days: " & cell.Value & Chr(10)
On Error GoTo 0
End If
Next cell
End Sub
I am using this formula to extract the [h]:mm value from a cell and place it into the cell comments. The current result gives me a result of Days: 3.9339797008547 for a cell with the value of 94:24. Is there anyway to change this to only 2 decimal places (3.93) without changing the initial cell value.

I have a few rows in an excel sheet and I want to highlight the highest number(s) in each row.
I've been playing around with conditional formatting, and using the formula:
=$C23=MAX($C$23:$C$55)
in the conditional formatting box and selecting a formatting type, I can automatically highlight the highest number in column C (row 23 to 55). However, this formula only seems to work when I'm selecting columns of data rather than rows. If I want to highlight the highest number in row 23, the formula I'm using is:
=$C23=MAX($C$23:$M$23)
Which I think should highlight the highest number From C23 to M23, but it doesn't - nothing happens.
What am I doing wrong?
