Solving Algebra (Equation) In Excel

Jun 5, 2003

How to do the following, which solves the equation, in Excel.

LH
W1
W2

(LH-X)/(LH+X)=W1/W2
(6-x)/(6+x)=.6/1.25
6*1.25-x*1.25=6*.6+x*.6
7.5-1.25x=3.6+.6x
7.5-3.6=1.85x
3.9/1.85=x

x will equal 2.108..... in this case

Excel 2010 :: Algebra Equations - Calculate By Grouping Like Numbers

Dec 31, 2013

I had a question about adding numbers, sort of like algebra equations (best description I can think of) into a spread sheet. Example:

Cell A1: 8
Cell A2: 8l
Cell A3: 8ls
Cell A4: 8l
Cell A5: 8
Cell A6: -where I want the total to be displayed in the following way: 16+16l+8l

Is this even possible to calculate by grouping like numbers?

Excel 2010 :: Insert New Equation Grayed-out

Dec 2, 2012

I put the "Insert new equation" button on my "Quick Access Toolbar" but it is grayed-out, as in, unavailable. The weird thing is, I also have a "Insert Equation" button on the same toolbar, clicking that opens a small menu of ready stored equations and at the bottom there is another "Insert new equation" button, that is also grayed out. However simply clicking the "Insert Equation" icon puts allows me to insert a new equation, as it should be. The same is true for the "Insert Equation" button in the "Insert" tab.

I am working on a new excel file, i.e. it is a .xlsx file with only one sheet. It worked for me before but I did a windows reinstall and now it doesn't.

Also while on that subject in Word 2010 you can put a "Insert Symbol" button on the "Quick Access Toolbar" which, when clicked, opens a small menu of recently used symbols, while its Excel counterpart directly opens the entire Symbol catalog. Any way to put a button on the Excel "Quick Access Toolbar" that behaves like its Word 2010 sibling?

3D Linear Algebra. Translate To Best Fit Plane

Mar 20, 2008

I have several hundred points in cartesian x,y,z coordinates. I used an Excel add-in program to calculate the equation of best fit to the points. The equation is:

z=A*x+B*y+C
where (for this case):
A= 2.29091
B= -1.77338
C= -192.494

My objective is to define the several hundred x,y,z points in cartesian coordinates about a new cartesian coordinate system whose origin is the centroid of the data points and whose z plane (ie z=0) is equal to the best fit plane defined above (when referenced from the original coordinate system).

Using Pro/e (a cad program), I was able to create the new coordinate system using the x, y, and z intercepts from the best fit plane, and then was able to redefine the points about the new coordinate system. After the points were redefined in Pro/e, I was able to export the points back to Excel; however, I would prefer to only use Excel / VBA because I prefer the calculations be transparent for optimal accuracy and validation.

Solving Polynomial Equations

Feb 16, 2007

I don't actually own Excel as yet - but I'm wondering if someone could tell me whether Excel is capable of solving what I'm told are 'polynomial equations'. An example of the sort of equation I hope to solve is: d/(1.18 + d) + d/(1.86 + d) + d/(9 + d) + d/(8.8 + d) = 2
d=? {I happen to know d = 3.65(approx) in this example btw}

Often there will be many more than four terms...

Analytically Solving Equations To Establish Physical Value

Apr 4, 2014

I am trying to analytically solve an equation to establish a physical value. Unfortunately, it's difficult to do the algebra, so it needs to be done this way.

I have an experimental value for this in "J2", so what I want to do is change F2 to that "I2" is equal to "J2"

Is it possible to get excel to match these values - I have about 200 different cells of this?

The formula is in cell "I2"
=B2*((1-(C2/D2)*((F2/G2)^1.2))^-1.5125)

Using Another Cell's Value In Equation

Oct 22, 2008

Lets say I write an equation on my sheet such as:
='A1'!$H422*AH$138

but instead of hard coding the A1 sheet name, I want that to be a value that I can put in a different cell (lets say cell C1) on my same sheet in such a way that it will reference the value in my other cell (Cell C1) and put its value into that equation.

So if I make the value in C1 = A99 then the equation becomes
='A99'!$H422*AH$138

Below is a nonlinear model, together with calibration data for which I would like to find the parameters Ro, Kc, a and b.

R = Ro + Kc * (1/(1 + exp(-(a + b*lnC))

Calibration Data

C R
0.00.3347
4.80.4201
7.70.5141
11.20.6177
14.40.6887

Given the calibration data above, how can I calculate or at least estimate these parameters?
I do not want to use an add-in program, like Solver, in Excel. I do, however, want to be able to use any existing functions, if necessary, in Excel. i'd appreciate it if someone can walk me through the steps.

Calculate Best Fit Equation Of Curve

May 16, 2008

I am trying to calculate the equation of a curve which best fits some data. On the x-axis is date and y-axis the readings. The curve is quadratic, so on the chart I am fitting a 2nd order polyomial and displaying the equation. To prove that the equation the trendline gives me is reasonable, I am applying the equation on the x parameter to get the y parameter estimate and looking to see the error between predicted and actual - see attached.

The equation and the output from it are clearly rubbish, even though on the graph the trendline is a reasonable fit - see attached. Has anyone any ideas why? I think it has something to do with using a date on the x-axis but no idea why. Is there a way to correct for this? I also tried using the following I to calculate the coefficients which came up with a reasonable forecast (although linest should only be used for linear data): =LINEST(C3:C15,B3:B15^{1,2,3})

Equation To Find Top 2 Highest Values?

I have the following 2 formulas that determine the top 2 scores and return the respective headers, but they aren't perfect.

=INDEX(T1:V2,1,MATCH(MAX(T2:V2),T2:V2,0))

The above returns the max, however doesn't take into account scores that are a tie or 0 values

=INDEX(T1:V2,1,MATCH(LARGE(T2:V2,2),T2:V2,0))

The above returns the 2nd highest value, but some instances the output is correct (if there is a tie or a 0).

How can I fix both of these equations and also determine the 3rd highest score?
