Auto-disable Macros Opening Workooks Via VBA
Aug 1, 2006
I have to open some woorkbooks via VBA disabling macros automatically (the reason of this is very hard to explain, my boss wants it in this way)
Does any parameter exist to add it to the woorkbook.open function? or any trick to do this?

I have an Excel 2003 program that contains macros. One of the macros hides certain command bars and disables the worksheet menu bar. On close the opposite is true. The problem is, if a user uses the disable macros when opening then the worksheet menu bar and other command bars are still available. I would like to hide all of the data sheets and display another sheet that would normally be hidden displaying a message that the macros have to be enabled for the program to work correctly if disable macros is chosen. When the enable macros are used I would like the Error page to be hidden.

I have created an Excel template that the company sends out to suppliers to provide us with Quotations. I've added some VB in the Before Save module to prompt the user to do certain things. The problem I have is that I run another procedure that loops through a list of data and re-formats it using the template and therefore every time it tries to save a file the Before Save prompt pops up.

I have a user that keeps a maintenance log in an Excel worksheet and sends an updated copy once a week to a board member. Two weeks ago, the board member started complaining that he was prompted to enable/disable macros on opening and became worried when my user stated that no macros were used in the book. He is now concerned that we have sent him a virus.
I know the file is clean because I've scanned it, and when I look at the file in VB, there are no modules or classes present just the Sheets 1-3 and the ThisWorkbook file. None of these objects have any code in them. My user does have some macros in PERSONAL.XLS but they are not used in the workbook in question.
No one else gets the prompt for enabling/disabling macros. Even if I set my security to prompt for any macros, I get no message. I'm convinced that there must be some setting in his Excel that is causing this individual to get this message. Is there anything else other than a macro that would cause this?

have a password protected spreadsheet with a userform for people to enter data. This allows them to enter data, but stops them from editing or deleteing data once entered.
When the spreadsheet is opened, it asks for a password to unlock it. Hitting cancel allows the user to continue and the userform pops up for the user to enter data. I would like to disable the initial password prompt when the file is opened to avoid confusion on the users part.

Simple question: How can I disable the Research Task Pane from launching when I Alt-click in Excel 2003?
Further Explanation:
I have an Excel Add-in (commercial, not my own) that will retrieve data from an outside server when the user presses Alt-Double Click. Work's great. I've now upgraded to Excel 2003, so anytime I Alt-Double Click, Excel opens up the "Research Task Pane" (Pain?). To make matters worse, I'm behind a corporate firewall, so I get an authentication challange in order to connect to the internet when this opens. Don't want it, don't need it, want to get rid of it. Any solution is fine - Option setting, VBA, Registry setting

effectively disable ALL macros associated with a workbook if it's opened after an "expiration date" that's buried on a very hidden sheet.
I think I can figure out how to render the entire workbook useless after the expiration date, but I need to retain all formatting, underlying data and formulas so that macros can be re-enabled if I change the expiration date.

On several of my worksheets, I'm asked if I want to disable/enable the macros but there are none associated with that particular worksheet- matter of fact, none of my worksheets have macros unless pivot tables count, so why am I being prompted in that way?

Is it possible to open a workbook via vba, but disable the macros? I know this sounds strange, but the workbook is coded to prevent users from saving it, and the only way to save it is to either open it with macros disabled or change the variable OKtoSave to true, but the variable is global only to the sheet and I can't find a way to change it through a macro written in my personal.xls workbook.

I'm trying to open a workbook that someone sends me once a week, and suddenly it's timing out (hourglass) and not opening.
I know for a fact that he put in some formulas (but no macros) that reference a file only he has access to.
And, auto calculation, he leaves on.
I see the file open on one of the 3 sheets in it, but the hourglass never goes away, and when I Ctrl Alt Del, it says Excel is Not Responding.
Is there any way I can get this file to open so that I can fix it or transfer the raw data to a new workbook?

I have a file that contains Macros that I want to share with others. The only problem I have is that users have the right to enable or disable macros. If they disable the macro - some of the security functions could be lost.
Is there a way to create a macro that will not allow the file to be opened if they choose to Disable the Macros.

I'm using Excel 2003 and recently when I open a file, it prompts out a Security Warning message about Marcros which at the end contains 3 choices: Disable Macros, Enable Macros, and More Info. I then click Enable Macros to open the file. Once open, I go to Tools > Marco > Run Marco (Alt+F8). A Macro box prompt out but the Macro list is empty. I try different choice inside the pull down menu "Macros in" but the Macro list is still empty.
Where can I find out the macro which triggers the warning message of Security Warning when opening the file? And how can I delete the macro if found useless.

I have attached a code that prompt the user for a store # then that number would automatically copy to cell A1 and at the same time it saves the file name as what is copied to A1.
This is a good code but the problem is when the file is closed and re-open, it prompts the user again for a store number and when you select 'Cancel' it replaces the store# already stored in cell A1.
What I am trying to accomplish:
1- When the file is re-opened, it should detect cell A1, if it's empty prompt user for store #, if it's not empty skip the prompt screen.
Private Sub Workbook_Open()
var1 = InputBox("store#")
Range("a1") = var1
var1_filename = var1 & ".xls"
ActiveWorkbook.SaveAs Filename:=var1_filename
End Sub

I want to make a macro that will generate a backup copy each time the Excel file is opened. I premade a backup and recorded the following macro, placing it in the sub here:
Code:
Private Sub Workbook_Open()
ChDir "C:Usersmy.selfDesktop"
ActiveWorkbook.SaveAs Filename:= _
"C:Usersmy.selfDesktopDaily Backup.xlsm", _
FileFormat:=xlOpenXMLWorkbookMacroEnabled,_ CreateBackup:=False
ActiveWorkbook.Close
End Sub
names have been changed to protect the innocent. But now either putting in to repoen the original working excel or manually opening it puts me in an infinite loop of backing up. The probelm seems to be that to make a copy it is making the open workbook the backup. So two part question here:
1. Can I make a copy under the same name automatically when the file is opened while staying in the current one?
Example: open the Excel file "Working Copy", which makes a mirror file called "Backup Copy", but stay in "Working Copy".
2. From what I did manage to do, I notice every time it asks if I want to overwrite. I chose "Yes" when recording the macro but this doesn't seem to get captured. can I make it automatically yes without being asked?

I have a workbook template that will have multiple tabs. I would like to have it that when you open this workbook the date populates in A1 for each tab and is static. At that point they can save with another name leaving the template intact so when you open it again (on another day) it will populate with the current date. Is this possible and if so how?

I have made an excel spreadsheet. The area with data exactly fills my screen.
When I send it to other colleagues, it perfectly fills their screen too. But for some colleagues the data area is either too big for their screen or takes up a small proportion of their screen based on their screen resolution. I would like the area with data to perfectly fill the screen of all people who will access the file.
I am thinking that I would do an automatic event so that I can change the settings upon opening the file. I have Excel VBA programming for Dummies which explains about automatic events but I have no idea what sort of sub procedure to use.

I have an Excel Workbook with Showcase Queries embedded into it.
Upon a manual open, the user is prompted to either refresh data or keep data since last save, the user then has to enter a username and password to allow the query to access the database.
Using the code below to open the workbook, no such prompts are given. Is the code overriding the prompts and automatically refreshing the data without password? [Given nature of data, visual validation of refresh is not possible]
If not, how can we code a data refresh through showcase query with user/pw req's?

I have made a vba program in excel 2003 that opens a worksheet using Workbooks.Open, and copies all the worksheets out into the program etc. The worksheets that I am opening have macros that automatically execute when the worksheet is opened (opening up some forms ). These macros are running when I open the file using VBA. How can I prevent this from happening. The automatically executed code in the workbook being opened is located in "this workbook" and can be seen below.
Private Sub Workbook_Open()
Dim CfileName As String
'Check Config sheet for template state
If Config.Cells(10, 3) = 1 Then
CustomizeDirInfo.Show
End If
If Config.Cells(10, 3) = 2 Then
GetConfData
GetGrpData
StdFileGen.Show
Else
Exit Sub
End If
End Sub

Saw quite a few threads on auto sorting but nothing that solves my problem: Sheet 1 has two columns, column A has names and column B has numbers. These numbers are manually entered, and there are duplicate values.
Sheet 2 has to present the same names and numbers in ascending sort order. I cannot use macros due to security restrictions. I can accomplish it using a combination of functions LARGE and INDEX, if the values are not duplicated. But that technique fails when there are duplicate values.
In other words, Sheet 1 has:
NAME VALUE
Bob 5
Joe 2
John 5
Sue 3
and Sheet 2 should auto sort these values and give us:
NAME VALUE
Joe 2
Sue 3
John 5
Bob 5

I’ve got a folder on drive C named “Customer Sheets”. In this folder at any time there could be over 500 individual customer sheets. i also have a "Summary Workbook" on drive C
What I need is a macro in my "Summary Workbook" that copies cells (“B3, B6, B12, B13, G5, G6”) form every customer sheet in my “Customers Sheets” folder and paste it into my “Summary Workbook” onto sheet2, every customer in a new row.
The “Summary Workbook” should run this macro every time it is opened or on my command so that the database is continually refreshed when a new customer sheet is made.
