I'm working on a spreadsheet that will connect to a firebird DB (Programmed using VBA and ADO intially).. The spreadsheet itself will reside on a server in a shared folder..
When a user opens the file up, I'd like for the spreadsheet to use the servers ODBC connection, and not the client machine.. This way we don't have to install the Firebird ODBC driver on each client workstation..
I am currently querying data from an Oracle database through MS Access and then passing it to Excel for the user to work. Not all users have MS Access so I would like to automate the data pull from Excel

When the connection attempts to open (red code) I get the following error:
Run-time error '-2147467259 (80004005)':
[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed
My best guess is that I do not have the correct drivers installed... If this is the case which drivers do I need and where can you get them from?
I'm having some issues importing external data from an Oracle 9i database.
Here is what is happening:
I am initially able to import data from the table I want to into Excel.
I do this through "Data -> Import External Data -> New Database Query" where I have my .ORA data source. I'm able to log in using my user and password and import the table. My problems come after I import this first set of data.
If I try to "Edit Query…" I get an error box that says "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed".
If I try to "Refresh Data" I get two error boxes. The first is just: "[Microsoft][ODBC driver for Oracle][Oracle]" and the next says: "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed". It then prompts me for the User name and password of the DB I'm connecting and after I enter the information, I get the same two error messages.
Also, if I attempt to establish another connection following the "Data -> Import External Data…" steps I run into a different problem. Upon entering the information for the User Name and password prompt I get two error messages. One says "!" and the next box says "Couldn't read this file". Once I click "OK" in those boxes, the Microsoft Query window automatically opens with nothing in it.
I can't seem to figure out why I can initially pull down data and then cannot succeed afterwards. I'm unable to connect to the DB I have through Excel until I completely closed all Microsoft Excel instances.
I also use this data source in Microsoft Access without any problems.
I am running Excel 2007 and connecting to an Oracle DB.
I have created a VBA macro to connect to an oracle DB and retrieve data then place it in a table. The code works, but it uses DSN entries which are specific to my computer. I want to be able to distribute this Excel spreadsheet to others in my company and have them be able to click one button and update the data. I figure the most logical way is to connect to the DB using an IP address that should work for anyone on the intranet.
How do I modify the connection info below to have it connect via IP?
I tried "Data Source = 10.1.1.10orcl" and "Data Source = 10.1.1.10", both of which VBA dislikes.

I have code that sends a section of the worksheet and copies a macro button after selecting cell L52 by
Range("L52").Select
This code ran on another computer for months without problem. Now my coworker is getting this error "Runtime 1004 Paste Method of Worksheet Class failed."
The macro has ActiveSheet.Paste highlighted when I click debug.
This exact same worksheet running on my machine works perfectly. What can I look for? I checked the security settings on the rogue machine and Trust Access to VB project is clicked (to allow the code for button to transfer).
I set up a spreadsheet for use by my colleagues, on an Acer 17 inch portable. My colleagues all use HP or Dell with 15 inch monitors (and different graphics cards to mine). They all complained that when they opened my sheet, the page breaks were all in the wrong place. When they fixed the breaks on their machines and I opened those file, the breaks were now in the wrong place on mine, but were all right on theirs.
I have now "upgraded" to a Toshiba 17 inch laptop, and find that my original spreadsheet done on the Acer 17 inch shows page breaks in the wrong place on my new machine.
Is this something to do with display adaptors? If so, does anyone know what I can do to standardise this across the board? (My boss uses a 20 inch screen, and the sheet for him is even more wildly out).
In recent weeks, when I've been asked to demonstrate excel applications which make use of buttons, I've found that on some machines the buttons will variably display as flat grey rectangles with no label, or boxes with red 'x's, or alternatively not appear at all. There seems to be no pattern since the variations have all happened on single machines, then not at all on similar machines.
So far it has only been company laptops (not my own machine), hooked up to overhead projectors which end up with this problem. I can't think of anything I would have done manually to disable the buttons from appearing.
Is this a known issue, or is this simply down to the user preferences and/or security settings?

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy workbook has 9 queries, all needing the same string. I would like to have a msgbox pop up, let them enter the directory name, and have that change all the odbc conneciton strings automatically. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
The message box would be a nice touch, but is not necessary, I can change it in the VBA editor if needed.
Currently, they connect using a Visual FoxPro ODBC driver. We setup the connection when we made the queries. Now that they are in on the worksheets, I want to be able to edit them with VBA instead of using the script editor (which is very slow).
I want to create a formula that will use a database table as a lookup for index/match and vlookup type functions.
I have my ODBC connection connecting to a mysql database and am successfully able to run sql queries through excel.
Is there a way to get index/match/vlookup formulas to use the database table as the lookup range?
I have no problem setting ODBC connections in vba, that return the results to a selected Range destination, but short of then setting txtVariable = Range("A1") is there any way to directly tell the ODBC connection to set the result of the query to txtVariable?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have 1 row of user entry cells (A1:Z1). To keep it simple, let’s say A1 is always 0 and Z1 is always 100.
The user can enter any positive number in any of the cells. For Case 1, let’s say ‘20’ in M1.
I want a set of formulas in A2:Z2 that fills in the values with straightlined values from 0 to 20 from A2:L2 and 20 to 100 in N2:Z2.
For Case 2, the user enters ‘10’ in M1 and ‘60’ in T1 and the formulas in A2:Z2 fill in the appropriate values that connect the empty cells (i.e., 0 to 10, then 10 to 60, then 60 to 100).
Basically, a user enters 1 or more numbers in 1 row, and the second row fills in all the non-entered cells with #s that are straightlined, thus ‘connecting the dots’.
I think a bunch of nested IF statements might work, but it’ll be hairy and nested IF statements are a resource hog. Any better ideas? I’m think maybe some INDEX and MATCH functions.

I am currently trying to create a database of products for my company. For each product I would like to include an image associated with it. I then want to have on another sheet a place where the user will click an error and be able to cycle through the products. As tehy cycle the associated image will pop up.
What I need to understand is after importing the image into excel, how do I associate that image to a cell so I can reference it in another sheet of the database. I am not concerned with how large the database will get, my pictures are quite small.

These are actually the folders on my hard drive and the excel files which i want to open is inside these folders with similar names. My spreadsheet file is "WeatherTester.xls", my worksheet is "1", and "A1" is the desired link location for the cursor. Counter is an integer. I get the error "Invalid procedure call or argument". I also tried to enter a hyperlink directly through the formula property, but Excel didn't like the single quotations I had to use within the HYPERLINK function. I have a data and it has been plotted into a graph. Here's what i have: I have 2 points, point A and point B with caps, 1.00 and 2.00 respectively. So now i need to draw 3 parallel lines, i.e from the caps and the main point itself. How do i do that? Manually will be of course selecting a line from the shapes. Any suggestions?

What I would like to do is:
In one column, list all financial years (ie 2006-07, 2007-08 etc - listed in cells A2 - A10). In a particular cell, I will have a date, lets say cell B2. Then in cell B3, I would like to know which financial year that this date in B2 fits in. So for example, if the date was 10/10/2007, it would return the following "2007-08".
i currently have an excel based application with VBA code. I'm trying to add some controls around the app by prompting user for login and password credentials prior to ODBC connection at runtime. So when application is launched, prompt appears, user enters login and password, if correct, it goes on to verify user has ODBC connection at runtime.
