Creating Cascading Data Validation Lists / Comboboxes Without Named Ranges?

Jul 28, 2014

Is there a way to add cascading lists (from data validation or form/activex controls) to my excel spreadsheet WITHOUT using named ranges? Maybe structured references?

I need to avoid the named ranges because it will cause my workbook to have duplicate named range titles which I cannot avoid.

As a general example my issue arises because I have something like this where the titles are the same but they map to slightly different data. These also have to be cascading because the titles align to another list which I do not show in the example. I also considered using pivot tables, but the issue there is that the data validation lists repeat in the same worksheet. So I would have 3 cascading lists in row1 dependent on each other, but the same 3 lists in row2 dependent on row2 but not the previous row.

VBA Macro To Create Multiple Data Validation Lists From Variables & Named Ranges

Nov 10, 2008

I cant seem to find the correct syntax for creating 14 validation lists using array members as the source of the named ranged. The validation lists are stored on a different worksheet, the Named Ranges are created fine, as are the ranges that are having the validation applied. The Syntax I am having a problem with is

Public Sub assignDVList(WSD As Worksheet, sListName As String)
Dim DVListName As String
DVListName = "DV" & sListName
Application.Goto Reference:=sListName
With Selection.Validation
.Delete
.Add Type:=xlValidateList, AlertStyle:=xlValidAlertStop, Operator:= _
xlBetween, Formula1:="=" & DVListName

It is the Formula1:="=" & DVListName that is creating the headache. The sub is called as the array moves through the columns, using the header row as the Name for the Named Range, and the data Validation worksheet uses the same naming except it has DV in front.

Dependant Validation Lists With Dynamic Named Ranges

Jun 18, 2008

in a sheet I have two cells using data validation and dropdowns - the source for the first cell is a static named range - no problems. The source of the second cell is dependent on the value in the first cell and the sources are dynamic named ranges.
The dynamic ranges in cell#2 is named according to the value in cell#1 and I therefore have referenced the ranges using the INDIRECT function - but this only works with static ranges.

In the data validation source field for cell#2 I have the following formula:
=IF($A$1="",the_full_range,INDIRECT($A$1))

2 Cascading Comboboxes, Works Only When On Sheet With The Data

Oct 23, 2009

I just started using vb two days ago so the problem is probably from the code. I created a userform with 2 comboboxes and 10 textboxes, when i choose an item from the first combobox it filters out the result from the second combobox.

And when i choose an item from the 2nd combobox it shows certain textboxes corresponding to that item. Everything works fine if i run the userform while on the sheet i pull the data off of (Devices sheet), but if i try it on another sheet then the comboboxes don't work anymore.

Another question i had is if there is simpler way to view the textboxes rather than the one i used in my code. And if there's a way to autoarrange the textboxes when i they are visible so that they all are in the same row.

Dependent Data Validation With Dynamic Named Ranges?

Aug 7, 2014

I am unable to use dependent data validation lists using the INDIRECT function when the initial named range is a dynamic one.

See attached.

The named ranges 'Men','Women','Children' are all dynamic based on number of entries in each column order to accommodate a growing list, whilst also not having blanks in the dropdown (hence I haven't used entire column ranges). The named range 'test' is a static one.

Column H has a dependent data validation based on entry in Col G. This works for the static list, but not the dynamic one!

Apply Data Validation Using Multiple Named Ranges

Oct 20, 2009

I am trying to apply data validation to a column of cells using named ranges. However, each row has a unique associated named range. For example:

A_______B
Birds____*
Dogs____*
Cats____*

I can easily apply data validation to these three rows separately using named ranges.
Ie three separate named ranges:
=Birds
=Dogs
=Cats

However, I need a way to quickly apply data validation to column B using different named ranges for each row because there are about 2,000 rows. Is there a way to reference text in the cells of column A that contains the name of the named range? Or maybe a bit of VB code that could do it quickly?

Can you create a Pull-down List that contains data from Multiple Ranges.

If I have a List of Names Running down column A (A2:A10) another List of Names Running Down B (B2:B25) and a Third down C (C1:C15) each of them named Ranges ("List1", "List2" & "List3"), can I create a Pull-down list in Cell A1 that would include the names from all three ranges?

Cascading Data Validation

Feb 26, 2008

I am trying to use cascading Data validation, but I keep getting a ref error.

I have set up a Dynamic Named range called Claim_Type_1

This contains the following choices:
External_Meeting
Internal_Meeting
Attend_Training

I have then set up Dynamic Named ranges called "External_Meeting", "Internal_Meeting" and "Attend_Training"

On my sheet, I am using the following for the data validation:

Source formula "=INDIRECT(M7)" - M7 is the cell with the original validation

It then tells me "The source currently evaluates to an error"

Dynamic Named Ranges And Indirect Data Validation INCOMPATIBLE?

Sep 25, 2009

I can use a dynamic named range and a direct reference to the name and the DV works.

I can use a standard named range (not dynamic) and an INDIRECT() reference to a cell with the name of the range in it and the DV works.

But if I try to use a dynamic named range and an indirect reference to a cell with the name of the range in it, the DV fails.

Any workarounds out there? This project includes a LOT of DV lists, getting them to self-maintain is important if I can do it.

Dynamic Named Range As Validation Lists

Nov 13, 2006

In the attached example I have a column of data on worksheet 2. Extra rows will frequently be added and removed from the column. I want to use that column of data to populate a validation drop down box for a whole column of cells on sheet 1. (Target cells coloured yellow for demonstration purposes)

I don’t want the validation drop down to be full of blank rows so I set up a dynamic named range to refer to the column on Sheet2. It all works really well...but...only for cell D6 on sheet 2. It doesn’t work on any of the other target cells on sheet 2 or on sheet 1. I have been looking at this for far too long and it has begun hurting my brain.

Creating Named Ranges Using A Loop?

i am trying to write a macro to loop through a column of data, creating a named range each time it encounters a certain string. so, it inititially finds the first instance of the string, then finds the next instance, offsets one row back and then names that as the first named range. how do i get it to actually loop through the column until the end of the data?

I can get the first range named but can't figure how to get a loop into my macro to repaeat the process.

Code:
Sub x()
Dim rngTemp As Range
Dim rngFind As Range
Dim rngFirst As Range
Dim rngLast As Range
Dim nom As Range

Dynamic Validation Without Using Named Ranges

Nov 24, 2008

I have a question regarding dynamic validation. I have attached a sample spreadsheet to clarify if my explanation doesn't. I have a list of codes that map to a list of other codes that are not one to one mapping. I would like for the other users of this code to populate what the correct code on our side is but without having to go thru the entire list in a validation field. (if that makes since)

Using validation before in a similar instance i used indirect to grab a named range to help shorten the list for them. However in this case that would be a ton of ranges i would have to set up! I've tried Match, countif and index in an offset formula in the validation list but can never get it to work!

The next name is in a8 and the range is a8:m14 and so fourth

If it's easier on a separate sheet I can have a list of names I want in column A and then the cells they refer to in column B.

E.g.

A B

Range1 Sheet1!A1:M7
Range2 Sheet1!A8:M14
Range3 Sheet1!A15:M21

many tools require more than one form of testing (electrical and/or calibration), but not all tools require both.

can i create some kind of drop-down menu the looks at the tool master list, but only gives the option of those that require the particular type of testing i'm recording on that particular list? how can i create a drop-down list that is more limited than the range i have selected for it to display?

Cascading Combobox And Dynamic Ranges?

Aug 21, 2013

I want to create a cascading combo box from some values that I have, ill explain how I approached it.

Cascading combo box is a combobox which values are obtained depending on the answer of a previous combo box.

So I set up a little table like so:

Categories Car Train Bike
Car Mercades First Honda
Train Ford Western Ducati
Bike Skoda Red Suzuki

and the combo boxes would be set aside from that.I collected the data in Named Ranges (A Range for Categories, A Range for Car, A Range for Train...)

The first data validation box contains = Categories the second data validation box contains =INDIRECT($C$2) (Where C2 was the range of the first validation box)

Once this was working, I decided to change the formula for the named ranges to allow me to add more values.

The formula was: =$F3$F8

I changed it to: =OFFSET($F$3,0,0,COUNTA($F3:$F96),1)

I expected this to work however, it just doesnt.... when clicking on the drop down arrow for the validation box, nothing happens. No box or values or dropdown.

Filling Comboboxes With Lists

Sep 10, 2012

I'm trying to fill some combo boxes on a userform with arrays stored as variant type (this is how I was told it's done). The problem is, I'm using exactly the same code in two subroutines and it works in one and not in the other. I have a button to reset the form and a subroutine that runs when the form is initialized. Here's the code for the reset button which works:

Code:
Private Sub Reset_Click()
App1Date = ""
App2Date = ""
App3Date = ""
App1Time.Clear
App2Time.Clear
App3Time.Clear

[code]....

At the moment I've got the 'Journeys' and 'TimeArray' declared as public variables for maximum scope, so that they can be used by both subroutines. But I've also tried declaring them localy in each subroutine and it still doesn't work! By using a breakpoint I can see that the line

Code:
carJourneysSaved.List = Journeys

is definitely running when I expect it to but the combo boxes remain blank unless I click reset!

Comboboxes Producing Specific Lists

Jul 25, 2006

My objective is to create a "guide or cheat sheet" for the correct combination of various tools.

My user has to choose (1) Mother Tool and (2) If the tool is to be used uphole or downhole.

I need the spreadsheet to automatically limit the choices for Combinability that corresponds to uphole or downhole.
After selecting Combinability, the 4th ComboBox must automatically limit the choices specific to subs that fall under the tool chosen under combinability.

I can create a spreadsheet and color-code the combinations however it will be very busy as the list is very long.

I wanted to use ControlBoxes but I can't get it to work - my brain can't seem to connect the dots in VBA.

Disappearing Data Validation Lists

Sep 22, 2008

I have a very large spreadsheet that I work with on a daily basis. The main portion of the spreadsheet is broken down into weekly sections (for example, columns GF thru GM contain data sections for one week, which then repeats with the next set of columns, etc.). Below these weekly sections are detail and summary sections for all the data entered above. In the main weekly portion, each week contains a size drop-down list which calls to size information in the detail portion below. Recently, the data validation lists have started disappearing. By disappearing, I mean that the data validation for the cell no longer exists on a large portion of the list cells. I have tried recreating all of the data validations, saving the file, and re-opening it, and when I do, they've disappeared again. I have no idea what to do at this point. The functionality of the spreadsheet is crippled without the sizing drop-down lists (for various lookup reasons).

Data Validation :: Dependent Lists ..

May 26, 2006

I have an Excel spreadsheet with two lists of data, the first is a list of groups and the second is a list of sub-groups, each group containing a number of sub-groups, each sub-group being unique and belonging to only one group.

Elsewhere on the sheet, I have used Data Validation (using 'list') in 2 columns to provide a drop-down selection in cells which the user must complete. The first column refers to the first list (groups), the second column refers to the second list (sub-groups).

However I would like to make the values which appear in the second drop-down list dependent on the value which has been selected in the first. That is: make the user choose a group in the first column and then make the choice of available sub-groups in column 2 restricted to those sub-groups which belong to the selected group.

Creating Relationships Lists From Data Tables Within MS Excel?

So:

Drop Down No:

1. List: Department Function:

2. List: Sub Function List Based on Selection from 1.

3. List: Job Code, Title and Pay Grade based on Selection from step 2

how to ensure that we are able to minimise the overall workbook size due to the complexity that is required here as this is just the basics.... this will need to applicable further once this basic requirement has been fulfilled.

Linking Data Validation Lists To Workbook?

Aug 12, 2014

I have a question regarding linking the content for data validation lists stored in a different workbook.

The scenario is as follows: I will have say 50 users using a template which contains various dependent drop-down lists. These lists work by using the INDIRECT function which calls the correct drop-down based on the previous selection. The drop-down entries are currently stored in named ranges on a hidden worksheet in each user's file.

However, if I need to make a change to the content of these lists, I will have to open all 50 files individually and change each one. So I'd like to have a master file to which all the templates would be linked which would contain the entries for each drop-down. So when I update a list in the Master file, it would automatically update the drop-down lists in each user's template with any additions deletions.

My question is, how do I create the links between the user templates and the master and have it so that the list ranges will be dynamic. So if a drop-down list contains say 10 entries and I add 2 more in the master, that those 12 now appear in each user's template?
