Extracting Text From String Vba
I need to extract the text from a string that is always less the last three digits. For example if A1 is abcdefg I always have to take off "efg" and extract the rest of it to the left but the length of the string can vary. I can be dirty and record a macro where I find the length, subtract 3 and then using the LEFT worksheet function can get my result, but when I come to try to convert that to VBA. What is the VBA equivalent of LEFT worksheet function and how would I go about using LEN in conjuntion with subtracting 3 from it?

Extracting A Date From A Text String
I have a column of data in the following format:
There is also a single space after the end of the date.
Can someone please show me a formula to extract the date from each cell in the column? This is slightly complicated by the fact that the number of days (“D”) could consist of 1, 2, 3 or 4 characters, and the date could also be of variable length (e.g. 1/1/2008 vs 31/05/2008)
Extracting Integers From A Text String
is it possilble to extract integers from a text string within a cell?
Cell A1 - "ABC 123"
I want to extract the "123" from cell A1.
I have many text strings from which I need to extract the integers from.
The trouble is that each text string does not follow a consistent order, so I
cannot use text functions such as LEFT, MID or RIGHT to extract what i need.
Extracting Text Before And After Numeric String
I'm trying to extract alphanumeric data before and after a numeric string. The numeric string is in the middle of a URL, which is a varying distance from the start and end.
Here's a sample of my data:

I start with just column A and generate the other three from that.
I'm using some excellent code from a Mr Excel guru (thanks again Peter) to extract the 8-digit numeric string in column B, I just need C (after) and D (before).
That macro is:
Dim c As Range
Dim i As Long
For Each c In Range("A4", Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp))....................
Extracting Data From A Text String
I have a few hundred rows of text in the fomat below: 1.23456 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. The “x’s” represent text which is unique to each row. what the formula I need to extract the number (1.23456) at the start of the string? To complicate things the number may be reported to any number of decimal places, so the formula needs to be able to extract the first block of digits at the start of each row and report it as a number that can be used in calculations.
Extracting Both Numbers And Text From A String

But how do i seperate the text and how do Crete a macro that would loop through some 2000 rows and create a column A and B from Column A?
Extracting Text From A String With Variable Length
Hey I got a long String like this "[...] increase of x.xx% [...]".
I am trying to extract only the percentage number which can be of variable length, so maybe 900.99% or 9.99%.
I tried this formula:
but this one doesnt bring the right results as the percentage figure is often not exactly 5 characters long.
Extracting Values From An Text String (URL)
I was given a worksheet that contains a column (A) containing about 5,000 URLs (A1 to ~A5000). Each URL string includes three parameters that I want to capture the values.
For example =
The prameters are known but the values are random up to 256 characters.
I am trying to pull each of the values into a column for sortability and have been mildly successful using MID and FIND but no joy.
Extracting Text From Text String
I have a meeting name in column A that also includes a meeting #. The meeting number is always enclosed in parentheses and is at the end of the meeting name. There could also be information enclosed in parenthesis in name. I want to extract just the meeting # from the name. Also, the length of the meeting number could change. Here is an example of a 3 meeting names:
Example 1: March Madness (FY2008) Boston (8765) I would want just 8765 to be extracted
Example 2: Year End Planning Audit (11567) I would want just 11567 to be extracted
How can I extract just that the meeting number from these meeting names.
Find Number Within A Text String Using VBA
I have a list of English game results with the score and the soccers of the game.
E.g. : [Steinsson 34, Davies 41, Elmander 46; Fuller 91]
As you can see in the excel, what Im trying to do is to find the time i.e which is the numbers in the field and display them seperately onto the cells beside. So what i need is to Find and extract these numbers 34,41,46,91 and paste them just beside cell on the list.
I can use formula but i can only display 1 number, so i think this might require a VBA script. Thanks in advance guys..
VBA Function For Finding A Character In A Text String
Is there a function in VBA that is similar to either the FIND function or SEARCH function in Excel? The arguments for the FIND function in Excel are FIND(find_text, within_text, [position]).
I have a text string in VBA ("$A1:$D$13") that I want to be able to identify the first "$" and then later the ":". I'm getting tripped up on the 3rd line of code. Thanks a million.
ActiveSheet.PageSetup.PrintArea = "$A$1:$D$13"
x = ActiveSheet.PageSetup.PrintArea

Extracting Name From A Larger String
I'm trying to extract a first name and surname from a username :

CN=Fred Smith/OU=stneots/OU=EU/O=SAC needs to read Fred Smith
CN=Ray Jones/OU=stneots/OU=EU/O=SAC needs to read Ray Jones
The string is always in this format and the name always has a space between. Given a day or so I could probably figure it out, but unfortunately deadlines are breathing down my neck,
Extracting Alphanumeric Value From The String
I have a rather difficult task to accomplish. What I need is to be able to extract an alphanumeric value from the string. It is a serial number of the equipment and it is always nine alphanumeric characters long. The problem is it can be anywhere in string. Example: “2156545 36 month lease NWL023568 Nancy Clay”. The serial number I need to extract is NWL023568.
Extracting Certain Numbers From String
I have not managed to find exactly what I am looking for so far..
I have cells with a mix of numbers and strings and I would like to extract certain numbers only.
I would like to only extract the first instance of numbers - so in example 1 - 123 and in example 2 - 1234. I have found various methods of extracting all numbers such as:
Function ExtractNums(r As String) As String
'Creates and returns a reference for a regular expression object
'Sets the pattern to be non-digits
.Pattern = "D"
'We want to find all matching non-digits
.Global = True
'Replace all non-digits with an empty string and return this value for the function
ExtractNums = .Replace(r, "")
Extracting Data From A String
I recently had to convert a text file to an Excel file. The text file had to be converted as delimited data since the fixed width column could not convert correctly.
Now that I have the data converted, I have several rows of data strings.
The data I have looks similar to the examples below:
41 AAITQ08082901PER0041 ABC v1.0 NES ABC P111 - Blue 7706 6547 Yes No 140 5 AAITQ08082901PER0005 ABC v1.0 NEG ABC Z113 - Silver R 9222 2743 Yes No 156123 My question is, how do I extract the numbers that follow the word "No" at the end of each string?
Assuming the data starts in column A, is there a formula that I could type into column B that would allow me to return the value of those specific numbers?
Extracting Email Address From String
I have a whole host of email adresses
My issue is that in cell A1 i would have the name of the contact (John Smith)
In cell A2 i would then have the email adrress of the contact though it starts as E-Mail: JohnSmith@hotmail.com
What i would like to do is to extract the e mail address of each contact
Another issue is that there may be some blanks so there may be a name of a contact(A2) and then his email address(A3) then a few blank cells so cells A4 and A5 are empty then another address
Extracting Data Into Cells From String
I am accessing a ratings system for horse racing and trying to extract the top-rated runners for each race using a database query. The problem is that every runner and rating is in one cell and separated by spaces. I have tried using text to columns but obviously can't use space as a delimiter as the horse names have spaces in them sometimes. The one cell basically contains the following string...
COCONUT MOON 100 CARIBBEAN CORAL 100 HOWARDS TIPPLE 97
A2 = COCONUT MOON
B2 = 100
A3 = CARIBBEAN CORAL
B3 = 100
A4 = HOWARDS TIPPLE
B4 = 97
So that I have each horse and it's rating alongside it in the adjoining cell, I figure I somehow need to use LEN, RIGHT, LEFT or something but can't think how to do this
Extracting Texted Characters From A String
ive search the forums for this particular need and found somthing close but not what i need. i need to write a formula (not VBA) to extract a string of letters which can very in number out of a string of characters in a particular cell.
ex. cell A1= 00abcdefg00-000-00
cell A2 = abcdefg
i've tried different methods but can seem to come up with anything.
Extracting Sub-folder From File String
I've got a host of files within a host of directories, e.g:
c:ContractsJim BobJim Bob Site.xls
c:ContractsJane JonesJane Jones Place.xls
c:ContractsJeremy HillsHills House Lvl 1.xls
I'm working in VBA to try to extract the site name from the file string. Unfortunately there is no other reliable location where I can find an accurate name of the site, so it needs to be taken from the second subdirectory. So I'm using the following code to get the file location:
Sub FilePicker(fileToOpen As String)
fileToOpen = Application. GetOpenFilename(FileFilter:="PPM Files (*.xls),_
*.xls", Title:="Select a PPM Scope File", MultiSelect:=False)
This returns a string along the lines of "c:ContractsJeremy HillsHills House Lvl 1.xls". From this string, I need to isolate the string "Jeremy Hills".
Extracting Strings Of Text From Columns Of Data(text)
What I have is a column of data(text) which contains amongst all the text three strings of text in ever cell in the column which I require copying into three adjoining cells
The data I require is :-
(a) The persons name which is always after the word ‘Requester’ e.g. Requester Steve Robinson
(b) Their office location which is directly after the persons name and is in brackets e.g. (Newcastle User)
(c) The Approving persons name which is preceded by ‘Approved by’ e.g. Approved by Christine Hunting
See examples 1 & 2 below
CR0/CRZ3651 Requestor Steve Robinson (Newcastle User) Tel: 01234 798157 Approved by Christine Hunting
Please install and configure 2 Ultra 2s (typhoon and lancaster) for use as ARTE workstations. These workstations require Solaris 2.5.1 plus the same patches as before
CR0/CRZ3118 Requestor Doug Cunningham (Newport User) Tel: 0114 9881480 Approved by John Smithers
Please provide support to set up Cisco 2691 Router and PIX-506E Firewall to enable external connection of a remote terminal for project work.
As you will appreciate the text in the cells is of non standard lenght and the three pieces of information can be located virtually any where in the text
Extracting A Numeric A Specific Numeric String From A Description Cell

it has to be associated with the milli-litres statement .
is is possible to do a sort of ' *ml ' search and then select and copy to another cell ???
Extracting Known Text From A Text File
How do I open a text file, read all the lines from said text file & extract a value in the form of a string. For ex., if I know that a certain line in the file might contain this text: Market Value=1234, then I would like to extract the value 1234 (the text Market Value is a constant) from that line & dumps it into a cell in the Excel file.
Extracting Lines Of Text
I have a series of cells, each having multiple lines of text within separated by hard return breaks. For example, cell A1 has the following text:
123 Main St.
New York, NY
I want to extract line 1 into cell B1, line 2 into cell C1, and line 3 into cell D1.
Is this possible without VBA or Macros? I'm using Excel 2008 for Mac OSX so that's not an option.
Extracting Numbers From Text
I need to separate text information from a cell into 3 columns (W,9-8). The first letter I know how to extract. The problem is to extract the number in the middle (1 or 2 digit) between "," and "-" and also the last number. For the last number I could use right() function but the problem is that number could be 1 or 2 digits so I can not specify in advance so formula would have to extract the last number till "-". Anyone knows how to do this?
Extracting #s From Cells With Text
I need a formula that will extract #s, some of which appear as a range, from many cells. The #s/range of #s will not be in the same text location for every cell & “text to columns” converts some of the ranges to date format which is bad. Below is an example of some of the data that may appear. The only constant is that the first name is only the initial w/a period, but there may be a Jr. or Sr. thrown in occasionally.
T. Jones 1
M. Chavez 2-25
B. Bailey Jr. 26-125
Extracting Text In Cell
I am trying to extract a partial string from a cell. There are 2 lines in each cell seperated by ALT + Enter
GREAT SOUTHERN ROAD
GUNDAROO QLD 7012
What I want to do is extract only the first line of the text and put it into the next column.
I've tried using the FIND, SUBSTITUTE formula, but because the 1st line of the address varies in length, it seems to cause more problems than it solves.
Extracting Text Into Cells
the text entered in B2, to split it, so each letter/figure gets his own cell.

Extracting Text From A Cell
Need formula to extract the text from a cell, with which a vlookup will be preformed on? For example if a cell contains: 116PH(604052) I would need to perform a vlookup on the PH.
The problem is that the "PH" in this case can vary where it's at in the string of numbers. Also, some cells may only have a three digit number with the two letters following. See my attached spreadsheet as an example. The current formula I have in column A on the attached spreadsheet performs the vlookup fine if there is only the three digit number followed by the two letters, but as I've outlined above, this isn't sufficient.
Extracting Numbers And Text
I need help extracting numbers from text. In column A, I have a list containing entries like this:
0005 Nurseries — propagation and cultivation of nursery stock
0016 Orchards — citrus and deciduous fruits
0034(1) Poultry Raising
0034(2) Sheep Raising and Hog Farms
0035 Florists — cultivating or gardening
The list goes on for about 800 rows.
In column J, I have this forumula:
It works great, except the result includes the left parenthesis: for example, J3 = "0034(1". Is there a way to obtain just the numeric value ("00341")?
Also, is there another formula I can use in column K that will do the opposite and extract only the text? For example: K1 = "Nurseries — propagation and cultivation of nursery stock" and K3 = "Poultry Raising".
Extracting Data From Different File Using VBA
i have file A3R-(345).xls, B1Z-(235).xls etc files inside folder called MyFolder.
another master file Master.xls which will extract data from files inside folder MyFolder.
what i need is to put values from file names inside Master.xls. It will loop through all files inside that folder and extract the numbers between ().
So column A in Master file will have:
How to do this using VBA? (only Master File should have the VBA code)
Extracting Values In A Specific Text
This how it looks like, i used this code (see below) to get the amount if there is a word "ins" (martin's code)
it works pretty great, but when things getting better, i've encounter this data: 12,300 ins 09-10 flood
so what i did, is to put another if function, like this: ..
Extracting Numbers From Text And Then Adding Together
I am using Excel to collate the averages for my cricket team. All the players are listed in column A, followed by their scores for each individual game throughout the year and ending with a total runs column for the season.
My problem arises when I have to give an indication that a player scored runs but was "not out", which impacts on the overall averages because a player who is not out is credited with the runs scored but not charged with an innings. So a player who made 15 not out is credited with "15no" in my workbook.
As a simple example: Player's name (Barry Smith) appears in A1, then his five scores: 23, 15no, 35, 125no, 2 in cells A2:A6. SUM($A2:$A6) entered in A7 ignores the cells that also include text (the "nos") and gives me a total of 60. Is there a formula I can enter in A7 to disregard the "nos" and just read the digits in those cells to come up with the grand total of 200? The run totals can be 1, 2 or 3 digits and I can split the "no" from the number (i.e. "15 no" instead of "15no") if this makes things easier.
Extracting Portion Of Text From Cell
I have made something similar before and we were able to make it work... I tried the same code, but it is not working now. Basically in cell a1 I have
Auction Type: Auction, Auction End Time: 11/15/2006 10:00:00 AM(MST), Asking Price/Current Bid: $10.00, Number of Bids: 0, Description: , Traffic: 28
and in cell b1 I need it to only display $10.00 in cell c1 I need 0 (for number of bids)
Extracting Data From This Text Format
I have a text file with a long list of data that simply needs to be extracted under separate columns in excel. Below is one sample out of a long list. Here is sample data and the format of the text ...
ABC MORTGAGE LLC
232 23RD ST STE A
BAKERSFIELD, CA 93301
Approval Date: Dec 08, 2007 [11 Areas Approved for Business]
HECM: No Originates 203K: No
Telephone: (343) 633-1234 FAX Number: (343) 632-1330
E-Mail Address: firstname.lastname@example.org
In excel I need to have these columns, Company Name, Address, Phone, Fax, and Email. I need to pull the data out of the text file automatically and insert it into these columns. The other information in the sample such as approval date is not needed. How do I do this?
Extracting Part Of Text From One Cell To Another
I have a column of cells with similar to the following text.
First Marine Avenue 18 1303 11 1
There will always be a final 4 groups of text numbers, each with a space
between, but each having different number of numbers (this particular
sequence has 2,4,2,1 - but others may be different, but always 4 groups)
The true text ( a series of Road names are potentiaaly all different, having
a sequence of words that may be up to 5 words long before the numbers start)
I need to extract the 4 groups of numbers into seperate cells, leaving the
Road name text in a singe cell. I would then have a table of 5 columns, the
first the Road text, and the next 4 columns being the group of numbers, which
I would then format as numbers.
Error Extracting Pivottable Data With VBA
I try to extract datas from a pivottable (so one data source) which could change.
The items of one field are changing (given by the user through Inputbox): "batch"
The items of the second field ("type plate") are at each time visible (the macro make them visible to have the complete information concerning the "batch")
So I want to extract values and labels from one particular pivottable (the one I display), selecting several batches. But the problem is that some of the items have no value, so disapear fron the table) even if they are visible. As I extract the value on each item (see code below) I get an error message saying "runtime error 1004 application-defined" when the macro read "valeur".
Dim pt1 As PivotTable
Dim pf As PivotField
Dim pi As PivotItem
Dim pj As PivotItem
Dim i As Double
Dim valeur As String
I tried to go through this problem using "on error goto solution" but it works only one time, and after same error message
How coud I avoid to calculate "valeur" with the Items (pi) not displayed ?
Extracting Date From Text Strings Of Different Length
Am trying to devise a formula that will allow me to extract a date (not stored in date format or recognizable by excel as such: "DEC1/09") and then manipulate it so that excel can recognize it and change it to a "1-Jan-01" form. Problem for me is that functions such as LEFT MID and RIGHT are very specific and sensitive obviously to any additional characters. some of my dates are preceded by "CAN BND 4.25/09"; "CANB BND 4.25/09"; "BC BND 4.25/09" and so on, you get the idea im sure that they are of differing lengths. The dates are equally strewn around as some (these are bond maturities) are 1st of the month while others may hold dates in the middle-end...15th, 30th, 31st etc.
is there a formula that will recognize the dates in the text strings regardless of string length and then a subsequent formula to manipulate the date to proper format?
i.e. "CAN BND 4.25/09 DEC1/09" and "CANB BND 4.25/07 JUN15/07"
Converted into: "01-Dec-09" and "15-Jun-07"
Not that the other parts of the string don't matter, already have macro that can recognize and rip bond coupons.
Extracting Text Fields From A Txt File
I have a file from PubMed with a bunch of citations in it, which often go above 10,000. There are fields that mean certain things and I would like to be able to import the text file into Excel and parse certain fields into columns.
The text file looks like this:
OWN - NLM
DA - 20091109
IS - 1872-6240 (Electronic)
VI - 1303 .......
Truncating/extracting Number From A Text Cell
I am trying to plot data that I have read out of a PLC (via csv file) . The date/time data shows up as follows: 2007-05-14T02:15:00.020-07:00
In this example, the suffix .020-07:00 is extra information and causes problems with graphing the info. Also, the cell is a not a number value, and I can not force it to be a general, number format.
I would like to truncate the cell or extract the time out of it such that I can plot the PLC data in a meaningful "parameter vs time" graph.
VBA Code For Extracting Data From A List As Per Given Criteria
Suppose I have a list of data in which I want to retrieve or extract specific row from the list as per operator name & relative comments (Done or Not Done) from the given list as per the operator name, now what I want that my VBA code should be able to get the operator name & the relative comment data from the list according to the operator name in a new sheet. My data keeps changing so I need a code which can work on any size of the data. I need to retrieve only operator name & Comment column in a new sheet to run my Pivot table.
My Excel data is something like in the attachment & the result I want through VBA Code.
Extracting Terms And Exponents Of A Text Poly Formula
1) This exercise would save me considerable time and would almost certainly eliminate the possibility of typing errors in preparing the input data file for another application.
2) My program requires each input multivariant equation to be specified as follows and in the same order:
--Number of Independent Variables, N (max 10)
--Number or Terms, M (max 20)
--Term 1: power of var 1
: power of var 2
: power of var N
--Term 2: power of var 1
: power of var 2
: power of var N
--Term M: power of var 1
: power of var 2
: power of var N
3) It would be extremely helpful if I could type the equation (of up to 10 variables and up to 20 terms) in a cell on a w/s and automatically get the above particulars extracted and nicely tabulated in a column.
4) Simplified Example: (3 var & 4 terms).........................
Match Row That Contains Text Text String; List Associated Values From Pivot Table
refer to the attached workbook for reference. I am looking for a function in Sheet1, Column E that will search for the value of Sheet1, Column A within Sheet2, Column A. When a match is found, the function should look across Sheet2, Columns B - V for values of 1. When such values are found, the function should return the associated value from Sheet2, Row 2. There may be multiple values of 1, and as such, the function should separate values with a comma.
Extract Multiple Text Strings From A Long Text String
An original text string entry appearing in an Excel cell would be:
"N7C Neuroprotective J5Z Antiviral, other M2Z Antiarthritic, other J5A Antiviral, anti-HIV"
I need to extract N7C, J5Z, M2Z and J5A from this string and list these alphanumeric values in separate cells adjacent to the original text string. The challenge is that these alphanumeric references may appear in different positions within the original string with no fixed value e.g. a "," separating them. The alphanumeric references may also be 3 or 4 characters in length and there may be different numbers of alphanumeric references in the original string.
Another example would be (very different from the first):
"T2Z Recombinant, other K5B Radio-chemoprotective J3Z Antibacterial, other D3A Vulnerary A10C Symptomatic antidiabetic K6Z Anticancer, other R8A Antiasthma B6A Septic shock treatment I1Z Immunostimulant, other S1Z Ophthalmological R8B Antiallergic, non-asthma M1A1 Anti-inflammatory"
You can see that in this further example "A10C" & "M1A1" are 4 character alphanumeric strings wheras the others feature 3 characters.
