Formula To Indicate When Text String Appears In Array
Jun 30, 2014
I have a long list of terms, and I need to identify which of these terms appear in another body of text strings. Rather than searching for each individual term, is there a formula that check the terms for me automatically.
The terms will appear in the larger body of text, but they won't appear on their own, so they won't be perfect matches.
I've attached a sheet to try to illustrate the problem.

I have a very large spreadsheet and want to count the number of times a particular text string shows up in a column. I can't use autofilter due to the 1000 limit.
Here's an example, Column C contains:
Dan Parker
John Doe
Dan Smith
Jill Smith
So if I search on *Dan*, the function should return a count of 2.
I've used COUNTIF before to return values when the whole cell = a certain value but in my case the cell may have 200 characters and I want to count based on a fuzzy search. I would like to do this in a function and not a macro.

I'm looking for a formula that can determine whether a given sub-string appears in a string. For example if cell A1 contains the string "bathing", and cell A2 contains the sub-string "bat", the formula in A3 would return "TRUE".
However, if the sub-string in A2 is changed to "cat", the result in A3 would be "FALSE". The formula would need to work with strings of different and unpredictable lengths.

i have a spreadsheet where I need to count up how many times a particular phrase within a text string appears. The text string will be duplicated many times throughout the spreadsheet.
For example :
Miss X was at work on Saturday
Mr XX was at work on Saturday but not Tuesday
Miss Y was at work on Tuesday
So I would like to count up how many times "work on Saturday" appears in my spreadsheet, and then as a seperate query, how many times "work on Tuesday" appears.

I have values in A1 through A4.
I have a string of text in cell B1.
In C1, I need a formula that displays TRUE if any of the 4 numbers from A1 through A4 are contained within the text in B1. If not, FALSE will be displayed.
Been messing with SEARCH and FIND, but not getting it to work.... not sure if those are the functions I need.

I want to count the number of times a word appears in a range (like M9:S663), but sorting it by the month it appears (eg: january = 2, february = 56, march = 2000, etc.)
I managed to do this but there has to be a better way
=COUNTIFS(RNM.1;"PRUM Transcripcion";FechaComite;">=01/01/2012";FechaComite;"=01/01/2012";
FechaComite;"=01/01/2012";FechaComite;"=01/01/2012";FechaComite;"=01/01/2012";
FechaComite;"=01/01/2012";FechaComite;"=01/01/2012";FechaComite;"

I am trying to do a sort of index match thing using VBA. What I am attempting to do is to use the prefix of a long number and try to find that exact prefix in a string array, and output that string array value. So this is what I have so far as a test:
[Code].....
So I can match the text exactly so if I put PREFIXB in cell A1 in this example, i will get the msg box saying "YES", but if I make it PREFIXB1231k4j3jj1kj32cj, it will display "NO". I want to get it so that PREFIXB will be displayed in the cell that I put the formula in. So if A1 = "PREFIX1AAA100CF" and cell B1 = "=ABC(A1)", cell B1 will display "PREFIX1AAA".
Now the thing is that these prefixes can have different lengths, but will never encompass the exact prefix of another. So if I had a prefix of: PRE1AB, I won't have a prefix of PRE1A.

There is a method to use ROW(1:10) within an array formula to strip a string into individual elements e.g.
HELLO > {"H","E","L","L","O"}
I cannot find it anywhere, thought it was something like =MID(A1,ROW(1:10),1) but not yielding results.

I'm having a problem with the below array. The column heading in cells E7:H7 Never change and i would like to sum up the appropriate data below those headings according to the what is in cell D4. The formula in cell A9 works but only if the string is exactly the same as what is listed in cell D4. Is there a way to reference cell D4 like i have in cell B9. I've scoured the internet for this answer and have not found a formula that works.
I have a list of domain names/URLs in column A of workbook 1:
jhjh.com
hajfh.co.nz
123.123.12.12
I have a list of domain name extensions in workbook #2:
.com
.co.nz
.net
I want to determine if the cells in column A workbook one contain any of the strings in workbook 2 - note that I need to look at the string, not the entire cell in workbook one. If there is a match, true, if not, false for that cell within workbook one.
It's sort of a reverse array lookup with text. It seems that cross workbook and text is what causes the challenge.

I'd like to search for a specific value like (1) in an array of cells like (A:A). The result needs to be the average number of a different column (B:B) in the same row as the searched value (1). And the resulting number should be rounded up to the nearest 10.
Example below: (Find value = 1 in A:A) ... 1 is found 4 times.
A | B
1 | 295
3 | 123
1 | 400
5 | 425
1 | 354
1 | 400
In the example above there are 4 (1's) found. By adding all the values in column (B) of the same row, we get 295+400+354+400 = 1449, dividing that in 4, the average is 362.25, rounding that up to the nearest 10... THE RESULT I'M LOOKING FOR IS: 370

in C a string is nothing more than an Array of characters ending with a null character.
in VBA this does not seem to be the case.I am trying to use the BlowFish code from David Midkiff for some encryption, however the code sometimes fails:
When encrypting a string a string of a specific length should be returned. however sometimes one of the characters of the encrypted string is a null character, and the returned encrypted string (with a embedded null character) is causing me problems. I want to check for the null character and if present redo the encryption. But how do I check for the presence of this null character in a unicode (double-byte) string?
Checking with Len(encrypted) gives the correct length (!) but trying to move each (unicode)character into an array fails when using the Mid() function past the null character in the string.
Now I can use
byteArray() = StrConv(unicodetext,vbFromUnicode)
to get the lower byte of each character into an array easily, but how do I do this for both bytes of the unicode characters?
Using an integer array does not work other than through
intArray(j) = CInt(AscW(Mid(Outp, j, 1)))
which fails on the nullstring in my encrypted text.
I have tried with variants but so far no luck. I thought if the string was entered into a variant then I could also address the variant as an array of bytes, but that does not seem to be accepted by VBA.

How can I transform a text string into a formula. ='F1'!$C$2
This appears as a text and I want to convert it to a formula exactly like it's written. I made this formula like this because I need to get the value from 1000 sheets. So I use the formula to change the sheet number automatically.
But now I can not convert the text into a real formula.
I know that I could do it with a macro but I prefer to do it without using a macro.

I have been trying to work out a formula without success so far. If you look at the this text string
Code:
Depart Doncaster Depot with a Mini bus at 0649
The "Mini" word in red is the one that I am trying to work out with.
Here is the problem. The "Mini" word could be replaced with 7 other words - Walk, Artic, Dart Smart, Maxi, Smart, Staff Car, or just bus with no explanation as to what type it is.
I need a formula to look at the text string and work out which one of the above categories are included in the text and based on that gives me either W, A, Dart Smart, Mx, S, Car, and the last to be just N.

What formula can I use to search a range of cell values for a specific text string? My method is searching formulas instead, which is not what I want.
Background: I am developing a little test script for a project and I want to include some automatic validations to help make the job of the testers easier.
What I have set up so far:
1. Testers input numbers into specific fields M8 through M20.
2. Fields N8 through N20 automatically check fields M8 through M20 and compare those with what is contained in a range of hidden cells I set up in advance. A formula ensures that it reports "correct" or "incorrect" on a field-by-field basis, based on the comparison.
3. Cell O8 searches for the text string "incorrect" in cells N8 through N20. If that text string appears in any one of the cell values (not formulas), then O8 directs the tester to test again. If the text string "incorrect" does not appear, then cell O8 reports that the test was successful, and the tester can proceed to the next test (exact same setup repeats).
My only problem is in the formula used for the last step. I have tried a few different formulas I know in cell 08, but none are giving me the results I'm looking for. The closest I have come is a successful search and validation based on the string being in the formula instead of in the value of the given cell.

I have an Array formula that returns a value from several rows below:
=MAX(IF($P$8:$AQ$8="Today",$P13:$AQ13))
Row 8 contains only text and only one occurrence of the word "Today".
Row 13 has only numbers. The corresponding value directly below the column containing the word "Today" is returned successfully.
I now need a similar formula to return a text entry located in the same column but on the previous row (row 12) directly above the value just returned and this row contains only text entries.
Using the above formula and referencing $P12:$AQ12 returns 0 as expected.

=MATCH("*"&$A11&"*",'[Customer Master List - 05.30.xlsx]Export Worksheet'!$B$82:$B$1298,0)
However, it works with some text but won't work for some.

I currently have a large amount of data extracted from a performance tracking system. The columns I am concerned with are Page Title and Time (the time it takes the system to navigate to the this page).
I am trying to create a dashboard to show:
Webpage Title (each unique instance of the webpage)Aggregate Time (total time it takes for all instances)# of Hits (Each time the value appears in the data)Average Time (this formula I can handle; Aggregate Time/# of Hits)
The major issue is that the webpage is extracted as XYZ001 -- PAGE1, XYZ439 -- PAGE2, XYZ854 -- PAGE1, etc. Basically, I am only concerned with what comes after the --.
Here is an example of the two tabs.
DASHBOARD TAB:
Page Title
Aggregate Time
# of Hits
Avg. Time
PAGE1
[Code]...
Basically, I am looking for a formula that says,
For any instance in the Page Title column that contains PAGE3, add the amount in the Time column (i.e., 1.2 +.5).

I am looking for a formula to remove the text 2.2 from the string Rav4 2.2 D-4d X or 1.33 out of Yaris 1.33 Vvt etc, I have tried using the formula
=IF(P2="","",VLOOKUP("*"&P2&"*",AM$1:AN$25,2,1))
But it just keeps returning #N/A. I have all the variables outlined in cells AM$1:AN$25 hence the reference. I currently have the formula
=IF(P2="","",VLOOKUP(P2&"*",AK$1:AL$25,2,1))
Which is working perfectly @ finding and returning the start of the string but just cannot get the one to find the middle characters.
