How To Avoid Auto-formatting To Date Format In Excel
Apr 6, 2014
System is generating IDs like 1-OCTO33, 1-NOVE44, which on exporting in excel converts to 1-OCT-33 & 1-NOV-44. How can this auto-formatting be restricted in excel?
To test, you can try entering in excel 1-OCTO33, it converts to 1-OCT-33.
I am looking for some setting in excel, which would prevent it on exporting to excel. Other options like changing column format to text or using a limiter ' will not work in this case.

for some reason every number in excel is automatically formatting as long date. while i can go into the individual cells, columns, rows, sheets and change the format it always auto formats to date at the outset.

I have created a workbook with 31 worksheets (they represent each day of the month). I'd like to know how I can auto fill the date in cell A1 across the 31 worksheets without having to type in each day myself. I need the date format to look like this: Wednesday 7th May 2014
In other words, cell A1 in worksheet 1 needs to say Thursday 1st May 2014, cell A1 in worksheet 2 needs to say Friday 2nd May 2014, cell A1 in worksheet 3 needs to say Saturday 4th May 2014 and so on for the remainder of the worksheets for that month.

I've been having a problem lately with Excel automatically converting all of the cells on my spreadsheet from standard number format to dates. I've created several spreadsheets for calculations and all the cells in the number formats that I wanted. It's been saved and actually reopened and used several times. I opened it this morning and now half of numbers are now converted to dates. I've had this happen several times on several different spreadsheets. Why is this happening? Is there a setting somewhere that I need to change?

I have a table of data (total 142 rows). Column contains dates, in the format dd-mmm-yyyy.
I tried to filter using DATE FILTERS->EQUALS and in the custom filter window, I chose EQUALS then picked a date from the date picker icon. The date I picked was 5/4/2009 (this is May 4, 2009, formatted automaticall by excel as m/d/yyyy).
When I clicked OK, nothing showed up despite the fact that there are 6 occurences of May 4, 2009 (formatted as dd-mmm-yyyy in the data table)
So my questions are:
1. Is this due to the formatting?
2. Is there a way to change the date format supplied by the date picker?

I think there's a way to use Excel to automatically create a 5-day calendar. Maybe a macro?
The date format must be dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm and it must be in text format. If its June 9, 2012 at 6pm - the correct format is: 12/06/2012 18:00
I want to post 5 times a day: 09:05, 9:55, 10:45, 16:55 and 18:00.
Column A is where the date and time goes. Ideally, I'd enter in A1 the start date and then run a macro that would automatically populate the next 5 consecutive days with the specific times above (so 25 rows total in column A).
I have to save the file as a csv file, so the date and time format has to be in text or I'll get an upload error in Hootsuite.

I have an Excel 2010 spreadsheet where the default number format keeps switching to the date format. I keep switching it back and it'll stay as a number format for a time, but then it'll switch back. This is also the case for any new worksheets in that one spreadsheet.
This only happens with this one file - everything else behaves according to my regional settings or to how the file had been previously formatted.

=IF(OR(J4="",K4=""),"",NETWORKDAYS(J4,K4,Holidays!Z29:Z39)-1)
Above is the formula I am working with. I am inserting it into row 4 thru row 996 in a number of different columns. The auto fill function works great for this part of the formula….
=IF(OR(J4="",K4=""),"",NETWORKDAYS(J4,K4,Holidays!
However, this part Z29:Z39 I have to enter manually row by row until I can figure out a better way. Do you know an easier way?
To put this formula…
=IF(OR(J4="",K4=""),"",NETWORKDAYS(J4,K4,Holidays!Z29:Z39)-1)
Into any column row 4 thru row 996, without having to change Z29:Z39 for every row, since I cannot rely on autofill?

When i enter a value in an excel sheet cell ,Excel auto detect the data type and format that cell to that data type.
For example if i enter 4/4001, excel read it as date and convert the cell format from general to date and displays 4-Aprl.
However if i precede with " ' " this problem is solved but my question ios that can i permanently disable this auto detect option?

The problem is that the date is presented in the format 20091012 and excel does not recognize that as a data. What I need is a formula or VBA code to transfer 20091012 into YY-MM-DD format.

I am trying to have the calendar in the second tab of the attached excel file to auto populate based on info in the first tab.
In the first tab, there is the start and end dates of certain projects. The calendar will need to only show the project name of every project being worked on that specific day.
Some days will have more than one project being worked on, the Calendar will just need to list them all under that day. The Start and End dates count as days the project being worked on as well. We will also need the calendar to auto update whenever we modify the dates in the first tab or add/remove projects (rows).

Once in a while, for some reason, Excel decides to format a whole random file in my hard drive to dates.
So far, I haven't bothered because it only happens once each month and a half or something like that.
The thing is, recently, it happened again. But now, each time I import some data (copy/paste) in a sheet, Excel decides to format any number data to dates. The data imported has nothing to do with a date (1-5 or 1/5), it's just numbers.
I originally thought it was the imported data that was at fault, but it's not.
I can't format my cells to text, because it's going to screw up a lot of my formulas and it wouldn't make sense anyway.

I am new to Excel programming, haven't done any before and not familiar with creating/editing macros. Using Excel 2007.
I would like to automatically lock all the cells in a row if the date in column A in that row is >= 7 days old. Data is entered once a week (some time Sunday - Saturday) and I would like historical data (rows) to be locked so that they can't be edited inadvertently.
If possible could I also highlight the current working week somehow?
I have attached the worksheet : testworksheet.xlsx

When I tried to import data in a CSV file, I ran into a couple of issues when trying to change the date format from MM/DD/YYY to other date format. I've already tried a couple things to no avail:
1. Use text to column functions and change the format from text to MMDDY
2. Use format cell function and change the date format
3. Use the text function (text(Cell,"MM-YY"))
Interestingly when I click on the cell and put my cursor and press backspace, the format will change. It seems like there's an extra space, but using the trim function does not work. I can't do this to thousands of data manually.

My formulas is
="Start Date: " & VLOOKUP('Project Information'!$C$4,Sheet1!A285:T285,19,0) & "
End Date: " & VLOOKUP('Project Information'!$C$4,Sheet1!A285:T285,20,0)
The results I want are Start Date: MMM-DD-YYYY End Date: MMM-DD-YYYY
What I am getting is: Start Date: 41537.7083333333 End Date: 41537.7083333333
So excel is give me the numeric values of the date instead of the formatted date. I tried to format the cell as date, but as I expected that didn't work because the cell also has text in it.

I have a question about conversion of a text format into date format.
2 computers, the first windows vista, the second Windows 8, both Excel 2007.
The purpose is to calculate the difference between 2 dates with hour:minutes:seconds, like for example:
18/12/2012 19:20:00 and 18/12/2012 19:23:03.
So in this example the result should be 00:03:03.
Both dates are formatted with 'personalized' : dd/mm/yyyy hh/mm.
In the first computer everything works like it should, but in the second it is apparently impossible to transform the first of those date h:m:s which is originally in a text format into a date format. I tried all the methods which i found to transform a text date format into a date , like multiplication with 1, Datevalue and others, but nothing seems to work, the result is always "#Value".
