IF Function True Not Recognizing Numbers
Sep 22, 2009
I am working in two different files. If number "40556" on worksheet B is showing on worksheet A, the function is to state "TRUE", but it's stating "FALSE". Both files' numbers are listed as GENERAL under FORMAT CELLS.

I am currently tracking online PPC keyword reports with Excel and need to know if there is a function that will find and match words and phrases and then add the columns that are queried for the matching words/phrases. I think an example is definately in order.
December PPC
Keyword Clicks Cost Revenue
large dogs 45 .18 $12.00
small dogs 35 .25 $15.00
January PPC
Keyword Clicks Cost Revenue
large dogs 12 .14 $8.25
small dogs 18 .18 $5.35
Now using the example above I need a function or maybe even a macro that will scan all "keywords" and find a match for each keyword each month, say large dogs, and then add the clicks, costs, and revenue columns and post them on a particular row or rows.
So when running the function it will find and match "large dogs" for each month, it will then add the clicks for all months with "large dogs" in it and then populate a column or row with the total along with the keyword "large dogs" next to it. Is there a function that will do this or maybe even a macro?

The back story is that from a system we use, when you download data from inside it, Excel treats most of the cells with a "Number Stored As Text" error. I had problems with this and it was just generally annoying so I wrote the below macro that converts each of the cells back to general cells and reinputs the data, essentially reseting the cell and keeping the data. Being that this is a loop, it takes a good while to run if alot of data was downloaded. Any idea's on how to speed it up besides screen updating? Note, other stuff happens in the first macro, but it is just cosmetic non-intensive things. It calls the second macro because I wanted them seperate should I want to just run the second.
Sub CleanData()
Application. ScreenUpdating = False
' Find the Right most cell and the Bottom most cell and
' run the macro from A1 to this cell recursively
Range("IV1").End(xlToLeft).Select
Col = Selection.Column
Range("A65536").End(xlUp).Select
Row = Selection.Row
Range("A2").Select
Range("A1", Cells(Row, Col)).Select
Application.Run ("FixTextAsNumberError")
Application.ScreenUpdating = True
'
End Sub..............

I have the following two macros that I use daily:
Public Sub add_tick_marks()
Dim c As Range
For Each c In Selection
If Not IsError(c.Value) Then
If Left(c.Value, 1) <> "'" And c.Value <> "" Then
If InStr(c.Value, "E+") > 0 Then
c.Value = "'" & c.Formula
Else
I use these because I frequently copy billing account numbers that have leading zeros from some proprietary software and work with them in Excel. I need the leading zeros to facilitate VLookUp's. When I paste the data into Excel it truncates the leading zeros. My typical procedure is:
1. Copy a column of values from our proprietary software
2. Paste it in Excel (Ctrl+V)
3. While newly pasted data is still selected I hit Ctrl+1 which brings up the Format Cells form.
4. I double click "Text"
5. I re-paste into Excel (Ctrl+V)
6. I run my macro to add tic marks to the values so the leading zeros never get lost.
The problem occurs when I copy multiple columns of data and paste it in Excel. If one of the columns of data contains numbers or currency then I select that range of values and run the macro to get rid of the tic marks. After running the macro the numbers are still treated as text. When I select a range of those values and right-click on the status bar and select " Sum" there is no value. No big deal, I just highlight them and format the cells as numbers or currency. But after formatting them as numbers or currency, they retain their format as text until I click in the formula bar for each individual cell and hit enter, at which time they take on the number or currency format I have chosen and the sum can then be displayed in the status bar.
How can I force the formatting I chose to take effect on the data immediately without me having to individually "fake change" the data in each cell?

I am trying to return a TRUE or FALSE based on a date in a cell.
for example:
if cell A1 = 07/11/2009
I want A2 to show TRUE or FALSE if A1 is 14 days or more behind todays date.
I have tried stuff like:
=IF(A1=TODAY()-14,"True","False")
but it just always says false. EDIT: I have just noticed that if I change the date in A1 to exactly 14 days behind todays, it returns TRUE. So, it does work. Do I need to add a GREATER THAN in there?

I have numbers from -50 to 50 going down column C. In column D, I want to enter a formula which will convert each number to a TRUE or FALSE. How do I do that?
I believe 1 = TRUE and everything else = FALSE, but I would like to know how to get that with a formula.

I want to run a macro if the result of an IF function is true.
E.g. cell J55 contains =IF(H55>I55,"Goodbye","")
H55 contains =NOW()
I55 contains =DATE(2012,12,31)
Now by changing the dates etc. it prints Goodbye.... simple enough, but what I want is for it to run a macro that selects a range from the previous year's figures and simply changes the fill colour on the range. The macro for this also works fine.

This is probably quite a simple request but here goes:-
=SUM(h2,e2-f2)
I would like excel to perform this calculation but only if another cell contains a date. I couldn't figure out how to do that so I added another column next to that cell and added =ISNUMBER(A8) to return a true or false statement. I was then going to hide this column but still refer to it.
transaction cleared amount amount balance
date date in out
A B C D E F H
1 $500.00 BALANCE BROUGHT FORWARD
2 1/1/10 TRUE 1/2/10 TRUE $5.00 =SUM(h2,e2-f2)
3 1/2/10 TRUE FALSE $300.00 =SUM(h3,e3-f3)

I don't know if this makes sense of if anyone can suggest another way of working this out. New to excel so sorry if this is basic stuff.

I've been asked to adjust some thing with a worksheet someone else created. On the sheet labeled "Criteria" there is a list of dates and some formulas that use these dates. I can't figure out why the result of the formula is a number, i.e "0"; I thought it is supposed to return "TRUE" or "FALSE". If I insert a new sheet, within the same workbook, and insert the same formula, I get "TRUE" or "FALSE". For some reason, the "Criteria" worksheet doesn't return "TRUE" or "FALSE", it returns numbers. I just need to know why this is happening so I can replicate it in the new workbook I'm creating.

I'm trying to determine if a rangeName is defined so that I can delete it without a programming error. I've used the idea that if I try to goto a non-existant rangeName, I'll get an error. I've tried to design a function that will return true or false if the rangeName is defined on the basis of that idea. Can you take a look at the code and see where I went wrong?

I have a document passed to me that includes information pulled from an internal system.
I want to use some basic formulas to show Totals, averages etc.
However, the SUM function does not work on the data provided unless I select the cell (As if to edit the text) and the press enter.
Is there a quicker way of selecting all of the cells in Column A for example and performing this function on mass, rather than selecting each cell individually.
I have attahced a similar sample copy - My SUM formula is show in cell B15.

=AND([@[Tenure (Yrs)=5,[@[2016 Sales=150000)
(Where should I enter high and low? Do I need an if formula nested into it?)
I'm trying to get it to read if the customer reads both criteria which is they've been there 5 years and over 150000 sales =
High if not Low.

I need to check one column to see if it is less than another one
If it is I need to have the IF function return specific criteria for true and then for false but then I also need it to rely on the results of another question from another column if the result of the first query is less than the figure in another column again I need to return specific criteria for tur and then for false
An AND function requires both to be true but when one isnt what do I write?

I have created a userdefined function. the Idea is for the user to calculate the difference in hours and minutes. The input would be like budtime = 30 , realtime = 1.25 the answer I would like to have is 28:45 (28hours and 45 mins). Im aware that I can format the cell manually with [h]:mm but I'd like the function to do it.
I have written this:
Function RT(BudTime, RealTime)
RT = Format(((CDec(BudTime) - CDec(RealTime) / 24)), "[h]:mm")
End Function

I have a worksheet where I have around 300 rows, each with 7 columns. What I want to do is add a checkbox to each column. I plan on setting non-applicable checkboxes to mixed status and locking the worksheet. I will unlock applicable checkboxes and sumif or countif their value according to row-based scoring, for example, each checked checkbox represents a value of 3. I do not know VBA and have chose to use the form control checkboxes rather than ActiveX.
I believe that a formula for this would be something like: =SUMIF(B1:B3,True,"3") or =COUNTIF($B$1:$B$3,True)*3
I am wondering firstly if I have that right and secondly if there is a way to stop my checkboxes from displaying labels. Currently, if I click on one it displays True behind the active checkbox. If I uncheck it, it displays False.

I have a football pool worksheet. My goal is to have a button that displays a message box with the players in order of how many points they have. So far I have been able to display this message box with one problem...
The problem occurs when there is a tie between two players. If they have they same score it will only display the first score in the row. In my attachments when you press the macro button "score" it displays a message box saying:
"Sue is in first place with 12 points.
Bob is in second place with 9 points.
Bob is in third place with 9 points.
Larry is in forth place with 3 points."
I want it to say:
"Sue is in first place with 12 points.
Bob and Dave are tied for second with 9 points.
Larry is in (third or forth, doesn't matter) place with 3 points."
Even if it needs to say
"Bob is in second place with 9 points.
Dave is in third place with 9 points."
would be an improvement.
Here is my code so far and i've attached the file.

I am tryig to create a macro that looks up a value between two workbooks. In the workbook the value may be on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd worksheet. So far all that is returned after the macro is run is a cell with the formula in it with no values. This is the macro formula:
Do While rcnt <= lrow
Cells(rcnt, 3) = "=if(iserror(vlookup(cells(rcnt,2),rng1,12,0))=false,vlookup(cells(rcnt,2),rng1,12,0),if(iserror(vlookup(cells(rcnt,2),rng2,12,0))=false,vlookup(cells(rcnt,2),rng2,12,0),if(iserror(vlookup(cells(rcnt,2),rng3,12,0))=false,vlookup(cells(rcnt,2),rng3,12,0),"""")))"
rcnt = rcnt + 1

However, when I get to the line of code that reads the value in that particular cell, it is pulling the value that was in the cell prior to the change. When I view the sheet I can see the new value. When I do a debug.print or ? in the Immediate Window it shows the prior value.

I have a date of hire column in mm/dd/yyyy with 5000 rows. It contains many different formats and I need to sort it by year. Is it possible to sort by year and include all months, i.e. everyone hired in 2008, by month.
It also seems that Excel is not recognizing some of the formats as dates.

I guess because I use a drop down box and another cell reference for the date, my IF/AND statement isn't recognizing the date and therefore gives me a "FALSE" result. I have the date formatted as a date.
I've tried referring to cell I2 which is the drop down box - that doesn't work. I've tried using quotes around the date as if it were text - that doesn't work. If I use just the w10=3 part, that'll work fine but it must be associated with the proper week otherwise every 3rd of the month that falls on a friday will be a holiday.

I've got an Excel 2003 sheet where column E has a 6-digit code input into it. I'm able to right a function off that code that outputs if E2 (for example) equals 123456 then H2 outputs "Dog," if E2 equals 123457 then H2 outputs "Cat," and so on until I reach the max of 7 nested functions. Problem is, I have a lot more than 7 codes that I need to analyze. This Excel sheet will be used every two weeks, with lots of codes input that need to have what the code means output. I created a named formula called "part1" where: =if(sheet1!E2=123456,"Dog",if(sheet1!E2=123457,"Cat", etc. It didn't work when I had $ in front of E & 2.
All variables in "part1" work when tested where H2 = part1. I created a "part2" with more variables, checked each and it works too. My problem now is that when I have H2 set to =if(part1,part1,part2) to test all the variables, it'll work on any variable in "part2" but not in "part1."

I have an autofilter setup with 3 values: "Show", "Hide" and "Always". The show/hide values are dependent if formulas based on other cells.
I have two sheets with this filter (Template and Summary); the filter works fine on the Template tab, however on the Summary tab...
When filtered to only show values "Always" and "Show", the filter only recognizes some of the "Show" values. I have copy pasted the if formula from the rows that work to the rows that don't and verified the formatting is the same. There are no named ranges that may be screwing it up and no empty cells in the filter range.
If I manually unhide the rows in questions, then run the filter, the rows stay shown. However, if I run the filter to only show "Always", then run it again to show "Always" or "Show", then the rows in question disappear.
I also have vba assigned objects for show and hide (the same scripts are used for the Template sheet and the Summary sheet), but the issue persists when using the buttons.
I hard code "Show" instead of it being an if formula, the filter works fine. But the formula that doesn't work is also used on rows that do work.

I'm using a macro to send the contents of a sheet to an html file. The problem I am having is that for some reason it is not recognizing the blank cells in the last column (column 9) of the sheet, thus I am not getting the " " that I need in the html code. The code for column 7 works fine and is identical. I did a test and selected column 9, right clicked, and "Cleared Contents". When I ran the macro again it worked fine. The problem is that sometimes there may be data in column 9, so I can't clear it. Here's the code I'm using. Is there another condition I can use to look for a blank cell or something I can do to the spreadsheet for my code to work?
If Cells(i, 9) = "" Then
a.writeline " <td valign=""top"">
"
Else
a.writeline " <td valign=""top"">" & Cells(i, 9).Text & "
"
End If
