Limit On Number Of Random Numbers In Prob() Function
Mar 23, 2009
I'm using the prob() function, and it works for no more than 61 random numbers. Does anyone know of a limit on the number of random numbers used in the function, and whether it's possible to use more numbers in the function? My formula is:
=PROB($C$11:$C$71,$L$11:$L$71,G11,H11)

I'm currently working on my masters dissertation and am using excel 2010.
Basically, I'm trying to generate a list of say, 1000 numbers within a range. I can already do this using the rand() function. However, I need excel to take each random number, apply it into a formula, and then list the answers in a seperate location. This would be easy to do if there was one simple function (which i could just insert into any adjacent cell). The problem is that each random number value is input into a table. The table, which has about 10 columns and 200+ rows, gives one final answer.
I'm sure there has to be a faster way than creating 1000 tables for each random number generated.
Let's say I have a list of 1000 random numbers in sheet 1. the function table is in sheet 2 and produces the answer in the same sheet, in a single cell. I'd like excel to use each random number generated, input it into the function table, attain the answer from the table, and list it in the cell next to the random number.

I have build a system that needs a lot of random numbers generated to work.
I have used what I thought would work to generate me these numbers like this example:
VB:
Lastrow = ThisWorkbook.Sheets("RPlay").Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row
RPlayerNum = Int((Lastrow - 2 + 1) * Rnd + 2)
This would generate a random number into RPlayerNum variable, based on the list in sheet RPlay, missing off row 1 as the header.
However we have noticed a massive flaw in this code.... It works as long as the excel file is open, each time run it gives a different random number. However if you close the excel file and open it, then run it, it ALWAYS gives the same number first run, every time.

I need excluding text from a cell and come out with a random number up to 3 numbers. Please see the attached image;
If you notice in column D there is text and a number that starts with a decimal, for example on the first row is .437 the next row is .215 next row is .63 etc... Is there a way to come out with a random number mixing it up to 3 digits and output those number on column "E"? Im only interested in filtering and coming out with the random number i mentioned .437 .215 .63 etc... not the +/-.010in.
There is no right or wrong number, i just need to come out with random number using up to 3 numbers up.
Maybe for .437 three numbers up could be .440 for the next row .215 maybe a number up .216..etc..
Hope there is a way to do this, my excel file is too long to type a number manually.

I am working on a Random Cycle Count Generator that provides random SKU#s based on 3 separate columns of SKU listings. The user clicks a button to generate the SKU#s to cycle count for that day. What I would like to see is a date stamp in the columns next(B,D,F) to the referenced SKU listing(A,C,E) based on which SKU#s are generated. This will let me see the last date that the SKU was generated. I would also like it to automatically save after generating.

Suppose I have a column filled with numbers in fraction. And correspondingly I have a specific name for every 10 numbers. I want to find out which is the maximum among the 10. For this I could use the "MAX" function in excel. Similarly I have to find the maximum among the next 10 numbers. Since I have about 200 such numbers under 20 different names and eight such sheets (10 numbers per name), it becomes difficult to type the formula and select the range everytime. I would like to know if there is any shortcut for getting this highest number among the 10 numbers.
Eg.
Name Value Number

I'm comfortable with the IF statements in excel and not familir with many of the other functions available to me. I am trying to create a character calulator for Elder Scrolls III (Marrowind). So that a person may enter their race, ***, and other choices and their by calculating all starting stats. There are 10 races you can choose from and I can cover 9 of them with the if function (leaving one as if all other options are false). I would like to know if there is a better way such as a drop down list or some way to search an array or anything that would be better suited to search the race cell and return data if it's true. I'm running into the same probably with choosing the constalation (13 choices in this catagory).
I thought to split it two different data fields, by letting you choose from 4 in one cell and the other 9 in a different cell, but realized I don't know how to make it check two different cells for a choice to return it to the display cell without hitting the limitation of the 7 nested funcations in a forumla again.

I have constructed an inventory formula, subtracting Current Inventory (CI) from Required Inventory (RI), to generate a number of how many new products must be Ordered: RI-CI=O. The problem is that if CI exceeds RI, I get a negative number for "O".
Question: How can I structure the formula to give a zero for any sum less than 1?

What I'm trying to do is get the MAX function to return a value, but that value needs to come before the values reach zero. It's a cubic equation that basically starts, at the beginning of the data range, under 10 then hits zero and ends up near 30 at the end of the data range. The end data range max doesn't matter to me if the data range hits zero along the way. Is there any way to make the MAX function stop at a certain value, or is there another function that could accomplish what I'm trying to do?

I have a check box on a worksheet that when checked calls for a timer code from a module. This works fine however what I am finding is that the code in the module is applying the result all the sheets in the workbook not just the sheet where I have activated the check box. I am a novice at VBA and no doubt there will be a simple solution. How do I limit this to my active sheet. This is the code in the module
Code:
Public Sub Watch1()
If Sheet2.CheckBox1 = True Then
Range("AH2") = Range("AH2") + TimeSerial(0, 0, 1)

I am looking for a way to create a random order of numbers in a given range. For example, A1:a100 to be populated with a random number between 1 and 100, but not to duplicate, using every possible number within that range. I use the RANDBETWEEN function to generate the numbers, but I cannot prvent them from duplicating.

I am currently using the simple code block below to jump to a cell on another sheet based on a user-inputted value to a cell on the current sheet. Although jump is too strong a word at the moment...walk slowly might be more appropriate.
The problem is that the sheet that contains the target cell hosts a very sizable used range and the FIND function can sometimes take almost a minute before finding and focussing on the required cell.
While I do not believe that a search range below that of sheet level for the FIND() function is possible, the cell that I am looking to jump to resides in a one-column, sorted, dynamic named range (=Bookings!JobID) on the target sheet, so I am sure that it must be possible to find and go the target cell in a much quicker timeframe than that being delivered at the moment. Just can't find something suitable at the moment.

I have a spreadsheet with 2 sheets. The first just links to another file and pulls in the contents of a particular sheet, cell for cell. The second sheet is a formatted report that I'm creating to put that data into a different format for presenting to others. I'm using the Index and Match function along with range names. All is fine except where the string that should be returned is very long. When that happens, I get "######" all the way across the cell. It doesn't matter how wide I make the column or how tall I make the row, the "#s" do not go away. Is there a limit on the number of characters the Index function can return?

I am running a macro that contains a template of a report and when it is done adding data to that report, it copies it to a new tab in the workbook, gives it a new name, and repeats with the next set of data in the blank template, over and over again.
Things work well, the code is correct. But I get to a point where the "Copy Sheet to new tab at end of workbook" doesn't work anymore. The copy sheet to new tab doesn't even work outside of the macro. Is there a limit on the number of sheets (it stuck at sheet 27) or a limit to the characters used across all sheets (my tab names can be long)?
The code I am using to copy to a new sheet is pretty simple:
Sheets("REPORT").Select
Sheets("REPORT").Copy After:=Worksheets(Worksheets.Count)
ActiveSheet.Name = SheetName & " Data Report"
Thanks for some clarifications about this problem. I am wondering if there is a limitation in excel that I don't know about.

For example, is it possible to have only the following numberformats in a file : 0.0, 0.0% and $0.0. The file should not allow any other formats, and the user should not be able to create custom formats.

I have a macro that selects a range of about 20 columns and fills down. It works fine on my smaller set of data, but when I use one that has about 40,000 rows I get the error:
FillDown Method of Range Class Failed
It fills down about 7,000 rows, then fillsdown the first cell of the next row, but leaves the others blank. The entire range (including the nonfilled cells) is still selected.

I am using a diamond shape that is copied into the active sheet when the user runs a macro. The user then selects the shape and enters some text. I want to limit the characters to a certain number or at least be able to give the user some advice when they enter too many characters.
I have found that, as long as I have manually named the shape "Diamond1", I can get the count in my immediate window with the following:
?ActiveSheet.Shapes("Diamond1").TextFrame.Characters.Count
but I want the count to relate to the active shape. So I tried:
?selection.shapeRange.TextFrame.Characters.Count
and I get a "runtime error 438 Object doesn't support this property or method".
How should I count the characters in the selected shape, and then if it is over say 12, require the user to shorten it or at least present yield a message Box?

I have made a chart with the average uses per day but would like to have daily numbers that average out to what i have but in a random sequence e.g. i have that a shower uses 320 litres per day for 2 people is there a way i can make a chart that says: 300 (a1) 340(a2) 260(a3) 360(a4) etc i need to do this for 180 days with random numbers generated to average the same overall. I dont know even how to generate random numbers.
