View 6 RepliesI have created an Add-in for use across the business, the add in calculates financial impact based on figures that are stored on the shared drive.
The addin currently opens the workbook, and sets the variables to figures contained in the workbook - and then closes the workbook.
To roll this out to the business - I need to get the add-in to open the workbook as read Only, so that it will allow multiple users to access at once. I have set to open as read only in the past - however this prompts me to save the workbook as something else.
Is there any way I can get this to just open as read only, do what it needs to - and then close; without having the option to save as something else?
I have a workbook which has a macro to loop round refreshing its data every half an hour and each time the refresh is performed the file gets saved. This file is opened by one user in the morning, and left open with the macro running to carry out the refreshing throughout the day. This workbook is then also opened by a number of users as read only who interrogate (but do not update) the data in the spreadsheet as part of their work. Periodically, they close and re-open their copy of the workbook to ensure they have the most up-to- date version open.
To let them know when a new version is available (i.e. when the refresh has been performed and the file re-saved), I have some code which compares the last saved date/time of the file they are using with the date and time of the file they loaded the file from, and displays a message when they values are different. I have, however, been unable to develop a macro which properly 're-loads' the workbook. I have been able to get the file closed and the latest version opened (through a 'ThisWorkbook.Open' statement). However, when the new version susbsequently opens, none of the open events are triggered, nor is the Auto_Open macro executed. This is a major problem, as the spreadsheet relies on this processing being performed for the file to properly work. (I know that macros are enabled (I get the 'enable macros' prompt in the course of the updated version being opened, and can run macros once the file has been opened).)
Is there any way of once a spreadsheet is opened after a set date has passed it automatically changes to Read Only?
i.e. after opening the properties change to Read Only
I have a shared document that I want other team members to enter data only into. For some reason when they open the shared document it is showing as read only to them how to fix this? See below settings used

Is it possible to make Columns Read only? So not one can type or edit. Not all columns just the ones I need
B,C,D,I,J
I have tried the following code, but doesn't work unless I protect the sheet:
Range("A1:A4").Select
Selection.Locked = True
Selection.FormulaHidden = False
If I protect the sheet, then it works fine, but how can I make a cell read only
WITHOUT protecting the sheet?
I have attached three excel files .....In the file called 'sampleBook1latest' I have a button called 'click here to clear a schedule' If I click that button and choose OR,start time and duration of a surgery then a schedule that is already created wil get cleared.....I have the total number of nurses and number of nurses used saved to the side of the sheet..... The total number of nurses at the side is read from another excel file called 'Input file for # of nurses'
Now the problem is that if clear a schedule then the number of nurses used is not getting updated at the side.....if I clear a schedule then the number of nurses at the side should also get updated....for example(If I create a schedule with 3 nurses and if only a total of 3 nurses are available then..... the used number of nurses for that specific time at the side will get updated to 3 from 0 and if I clear that schedule then the used nurses for that time should again become 0)....
The other problem is that if I schedule a surgery then all details of the surgery will be saved in another excel sheet called 'input file for patient details' so if I clear a schedule then all the details of that surgery saved in that excel sheet should also be cleared......
I need to make a workbook read only depending upon certain conditions that are apparent only on start up. As I cannot assign the ReadOnly property, is my only solution to trap the Save command and dissallow "save changes".

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a need to open a file from my companies intranet. My current method was to open said file via the method that the recorder gave me. However, I would like ot be able to open a said file without having to start open another workbook.
This is the path:
[url]
So the command is this:
Workbooks.Open [url]
Links are not actual links
So what I need to know. Is how can I open this file without opening a workbook. I haven't been able to use the VB "Open Statement" to open a file and I don't believe that I've been successfull using the Filesystem object either.
I'd like to create a macro which will
-go to a given folder
-open each of the workbooks in the folder, one at a time
-after opening the first wkbk, go to a specific cell address on the first tab of the wkbk
-paste in some values and formulas
-save the workbook
-open the next workbook, and repeat as above, for all workbooks in the folder
I want to make a macro that will generate a backup copy each time the Excel file is opened. I premade a backup and recorded the following macro, placing it in the sub here:
Code:
Private Sub Workbook_Open()
ChDir "C:Usersmy.selfDesktop"
ActiveWorkbook.SaveAs Filename:= _
"C:Usersmy.selfDesktopDaily Backup.xlsm", _
FileFormat:=xlOpenXMLWorkbookMacroEnabled,_ CreateBackup:=False
ActiveWorkbook.Close
End Sub
names have been changed to protect the innocent. But now either putting in to repoen the original working excel or manually opening it puts me in an infinite loop of backing up. The probelm seems to be that to make a copy it is making the open workbook the backup. So two part question here:
1. Can I make a copy under the same name automatically when the file is opened while staying in the current one?
Example: open the Excel file "Working Copy", which makes a mirror file called "Backup Copy", but stay in "Working Copy".
2. From what I did manage to do, I notice every time it asks if I want to overwrite. I chose "Yes" when recording the macro but this doesn't seem to get captured. can I make it automatically yes without being asked?
Code to save a file C:DesktopFile.xls to a different path say F:New.xls as a backup.
I want this to happen every 1 hour so that if in case my original sheet File.xls is corrupted or deleted, I have a backup data (New.xls) which was last saved.
And also File.xls need not be necessarily open.
Pls see below codes, the codes can record down changes made "from" and "to" and put on the "Log" sheet, however it is unable to capture the original values when I first open the file and make the changes.
Also, how can I put the value of "Now" in column B?
Code:
Dim PreviousValue
Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
If Target.Value PreviousValue Then
[Code].....
I've got several workbooks that users will be using to keep track of individual projects. These workbooks will talk back to a master summary sheet that has the status of all projects on it. The possibility exists that someone else on the network will have the summary book open when the program tries to update it, which would cause an error when it opens as read only. So I want to do something like this.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using the below code (i have combined different bits of code which i found on these forums) to open a new workbook, copy all the data in it and paste it into Sheet2 in the active workbook . Also, i want the data to be pasted on the next empty row as there is already data in Sheet2. The data that is being copied and pasted has the same format and it is going to be repeated many times.
The problem i am having is that it is not offsetting the data to the next empty row - i think it is a simple change but i can't seem to get there :s
Also, the code is currently selecting all of the data from the workbook that i open - is there a way i can select all of the data, excluding the first row (the first row contains the headings which i already have in Sheet2 in the active workbook).

I have created userform and it works fine. Following code assigned to 'SUBMIT' button in userform - works fine. I am trying to include code where certain data from userform is also copied to workbook2 ( of course without opening it)- as marked in red...below

I have a spreadsheet that data gets exported to from a software program. There is information such as customer name, part number, inquiry number, etc that I'd like to use to develop a log of all my estimates I create for parts. I'd like excel to take the cells I select and insert them into certain cells in the other workbook and automatically save that workbook. This will create a log of all my estimates where I can then link the full estimate to the log. The information will have to go in the next available row. Is there any way I can accomplish this without having to open the other workbook and save the work book each time?
View 1 Replies View Relatedhow to prevent a workbook from opening if another excel document is open and if a visual basic window is opened.
View 8 Replies View RelatedFor a couple of reasons I have had to take a workbook off of a local machine and place it on the network so others can access it. I cannot share the workbook because of the macro's and protection on it. At any one time only one person should have full control of workbook. The others only need read only access. I won't go into the whole deal but I was hoping there was a way on startup to detect if the workbook is in read only mode or not (Other than the basic notifications and indications that excel gives as many users either ignore or do not understand them). If so I would like a big message to popup stating this fact to the user and also if possible show them who currently has it open. Lastly, they would have a cancel workbook open option until they get the other user to exit.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running a call centre with 20 users at peak time. I have 1 user who will always have a master workbook open and saving throughout the day. The remainder of the users during calls will need to open this file as read-only to simply view the latest saved version.
This works however sometimes is takes a over a minute for the file to download from the server for the read only box to appear. I was wondering if there was a way for the other users to view it in a simpler and quicker way?
Also issues with the 1 user saving the file which others have it open as read only?
i need a way to alter the state of a workbook to "editable" then save and then switch back to "read only"
reason being is i need to hide tabs evertime the workbook is closed
I was wondering if there is a way to set a macro to run on an event only if the workbook is read-only. The macro I have set up right now reformats the toolbars to a custom user friendly one, but I want to be able to open the document with a password and not have the toolbars rearange on me.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a file that's only instruction is to open another workbook in Read Only; this is due to not having network privileges to make the entire folder Read Only.
I'm getting one user on the network where the Workbook.Open script doesn't fire up automatically and I can't see why. Then ocassionally i'm getting users where the file hasn't closed itself after the file has been opened.
Is there any obvious reason for both of these happening?
Code:
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
Workbooks.Open FileName:=ThisWorkbook.Path & "iSS.xls", ReadOnly:=True
Application.ScreenUpdating = True
ThisWorkbook.Close False
I have a shared Excel Workbook, and I am trying to prevent a non-permitted user from making any changes to it. I have managed to hide all of the worksheets bar one - The Warning Page - if the user is not one of my chosen users, but I am having a little trouble setting the worksheet to open as "read-only" if the user is not one that I have listed.
My macro code looks a bit like this:
If Application.UserName = "Vikki" Then
Sheets("Warning!").Visible = False
Sheets("Total").Visible = True
Else
Sheets("Warning!").Visible = True
Sheets("Total").Visible = False
ActiveWorkbook.ChangeFileAccess Mode:=xlReadOnly
End If
But when I am using this, a non-user will get a msg box asking if they want to save the workbook before changing to read only. Can I prevent this msg box from appearing?
