Is there a way of reading .csv files and copying the data from say Sheet1 without actually opening the file itself? I have .csv's that will take some time to open due to size so dont really want to open them, but want to copy the data from all of them within a specific folder.
I am running windows 7 x64 and office 2010 x64.
Is there anyway to read a specific cell from many excel files automatically and add them to a new workbook?
I tried to link that specific cell to a new workbook manually but now I have a problem: If I change the name of any workbook that is linked to the new workbook, Excel can't update the new file name

I have Mac 2008 Excel. For my work, I download .asp files and open them in Excel. No problem. The problem is... I'm wanting to use another computer at work that has Mac 2011. When I open the exact same .asp files, they show coding (html?). I can fix this by changing the name of the file extension from ".asp" to ".xls." But I convert these files a lot during the day and this is an extra step I don't want to take. And it works fine in version 2008. So what can I do in version 2011 to make it open the files without all the coding?

I just want to click the drawing number in the excel sheet and get the drawing opened automatically.
Currently what I am doing is searching the index for a particular drawing and then searching the folder for that drawing to open.
I'm using Excel 2007. I didn't change a single option but for some reason this problem came up. When I open an already saved Excel file it opens up in a newly created file. For example, if I open a file saved as "Monthly Sales" it will open it up and rename it as "Monthly Sales1." When I go to save it again, which would normally just save it where it currently sits, it basically acts as if I hit Save As and pops up the box asking me where I want to save it. This is extremely annoying as most of the places where these files are saved are several folders deep which makes it time consuming every time I open and alter a file. I can't find any options that looks something like this and it only happens in Excel.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to determine a way to quickly import data from text files into Excel and place data in suitable columns (under correct headings). I am thinking I could be asked which file to read and import doing them 1 by 1, or if there is an automated way to cycle through all the files that would be more efficient (filenames are variable).
From the text files I have attached I can tell the column headers and what data should go under each. Not sure how you would describe the delimiting on these files? Are these files in a format that VBA could be used to reduce manual copy and paste approach? I have about 300 of these files I want to extract the data from.
Note: the attached files are from a public access website.

When I attempt to open a file I get a blank screen. If I try to close the window it asks if I want to save the file so it is must be open but not visible. Have I inadvertently clicked on an icon with which I am not familiar?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAll of the sudden, I've started having issues on one PC with Excel opening CSV files.
I work with these files every day and they work on other computers.
The problem is that if the field value starts with a dash, Excel will not show any records before that. Meaning, if there is a record on line 50000 that starts with a dash, it will not show the previous 49000 records.
I can open the file in Notepad++ and find all '- and replace it with ' and it will work fine. But I have hundreds of files.
This just started. I'm using using Office 2010 x64. I'm tempted to get Office 2013 to see if this will resolve it as something has obviously went wrong.
In the past, I would open the CSV files just like any Excel file and NEVER any issues. I would do this with multiple files each day but even the file that I use to not have issues with in the past is now an issue if it has a dash in a field.
I received a few 1-3gb xml files from the government and I would like to open them in an Excel format. I have tried opening them using Excel 2013 (both as an xml table and as a read only workbook) with a machine running 8gb RAM and a 3.4 ghz i5 processor. I left it running overnight but Excel continues to "not respond". The file is intended to display thousands of line items with around 40-50 columns of data. For previous (and much smaller) similar files, the saved workbook is a manageable file. The only hurdle here is getting these open.

Both the excel files inside this folder ( "A.xls" and "B.xls" ) have columns B to F in each of them filled with some data.
The no.of rows upto which the data is filled in these two files can vary.
What i want is a macro which can open both these files automatically and can copy the contents in column B to L in both these excel files into revision.xls in such a way that the column B TO L of the excel file alphabetically first in the folder has to be copied to A to K column of revision.xls then after leaving one column blank i.e leaving L blank column ,the column B TO L of the excel file alphabetically 2nd in the folder has to be copied to M to W column of revision.xls.
I am trying to open excel files in a file path which includes folders which also have excel folders i wish to open there are quite a few.
At the moment i am working with this code but it fails to open excel files which are within the folders in the specified file path. Its fine for excel workbooks in the folder specified by file path.

I'm using pdfcreator because the code also has to be used with excel2003 on another pc. The problem is that I get an error (probably for trying to open the newly creating pdf-file).

I have a file that is on a server. When I open it on my excel it opens an old version of it and not the newest copy. If I open it on a coworkers computer, it does open the correct newer version. How do I change this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI currently have a password secured excel file on my departs Q drive, which everyone can access unfortunately only 1 person can edit at a time. I tried to turn it into a workbook so we could all edit it at the same time but now some of the other users can't access the file at our other buildings throughout the county. This is for excel 2010. And I did select the share workbook, and allow multiple users to edit box. everything else is unchanged.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an Excel application (Excel 2003) which is stored in the default Program Files folder by the Installer; for example: c:program fileszxchello.xls. The problem I am running into is this file opens as Read Only in Vista and this is interfering with the running of the application. There is no problem opening the file normally in Windows XP.
I have been able to narrow down the cause of this to the User Account Control system in Vista - if I turn OFF User Account Control, the Excel file opens normally and my application functions normally. Is there another option to open the Excel file without turning OFF User Account Control because some users may find it unacceptable to turn OFF this security feature. Ofcourse, one option is to install the application in another location, outside the Program Folder, and the file would open normally, but the Packaging Wizard that I am using to package the application does not allow me to install the application in any other location and thus, the application installs in the Program Folder and I am running into this problem of the Exel file opening as Read Only. Is there a way out of this situation where I can open the file normally (not as Read Only)?
Excel will hang up as if it's gone into a continuous loop (Although no looping macros are active) when you open or close a user form. The task bar in Excel will flash Ready Calculate. Visual basic reports no code is running but excel either crashes or becomes very unresponsive. I have to exit and reopen excel in order to fix the problem . It also doesn't happen at any one specific point it can vary. I have various VLOOKUPs around the workbook and userforms display the correct information. I use the INDEX formula in the control source of textboxes. I also use the offset formula to make sure DTPICKER displays correctly.

I have created an Add-in for use across the business, the add in calculates financial impact based on figures that are stored on the shared drive.
The addin currently opens the workbook, and sets the variables to figures contained in the workbook - and then closes the workbook.
To roll this out to the business - I need to get the add-in to open the workbook as read Only, so that it will allow multiple users to access at once. I have set to open as read only in the past - however this prompts me to save the workbook as something else.
Is there any way I can get this to just open as read only, do what it needs to - and then close; without having the option to save as something else?
Is there any way of once a spreadsheet is opened after a set date has passed it automatically changes to Read Only?
i.e. after opening the properties change to Read Only
I have a workbook which has a macro to loop round refreshing its data every half an hour and each time the refresh is performed the file gets saved. This file is opened by one user in the morning, and left open with the macro running to carry out the refreshing throughout the day. This workbook is then also opened by a number of users as read only who interrogate (but do not update) the data in the spreadsheet as part of their work. Periodically, they close and re-open their copy of the workbook to ensure they have the most up-to- date version open.
To let them know when a new version is available (i.e. when the refresh has been performed and the file re-saved), I have some code which compares the last saved date/time of the file they are using with the date and time of the file they loaded the file from, and displays a message when they values are different. I have, however, been unable to develop a macro which properly 're-loads' the workbook. I have been able to get the file closed and the latest version opened (through a 'ThisWorkbook.Open' statement). However, when the new version susbsequently opens, none of the open events are triggered, nor is the Auto_Open macro executed. This is a major problem, as the spreadsheet relies on this processing being performed for the file to properly work. (I know that macros are enabled (I get the 'enable macros' prompt in the course of the updated version being opened, and can run macros once the file has been opened).)

I am using xp pro, excel 2010 and the ftp server has linux installed. To open files from server I press open button in excel, then choose ftp location from drop down menu. FTP logon box asks password with the option of default user selected. I provide password and go on.
Some days ago something happened, I don't know what but as a result of it when I opened the FTP logon box, the anonymous option was selected by default. So I selected user option, gave id password and hit ok. It did not connect. Then I removed that ftp location from excel ftp locations. Whenever I tried to add an ftp location, excel restarted stating error message " *** encountered a problem *** ". So I reached a site after some googling and was directed to add the whole ftp file location path in the "File name" box of the open dialog box. It worked and the ftp location was automatically added in ftp locations. [ any ftp setting in excel is automatically transferred to ms word as well]
PROBLEM > Now I have a different problem. I can access ftp folders and subfolders but when I select a file and click open, downloading bar at the bottom of the excel does not start and after a long wait an error message pops up " the internet address ' ftp://192.168.****/folder/subfolder/filename.xls" is not valid. [I can open ftp files using filezilla etc]

I need to compare every list with every other list and calculate the Pearson function.
I am ok with the vb code to compare every file with everyother.
I can do this by opening each file then closing but it takes too long.
Each of the 50 csv file names is in my destination workbook
I would like to define an array using the file name, then extract 2 lists without opening the files then perform the pearson function and place the value in the destination workbook. (The pearson function just measures the strength of correlation between 2 sets of numbers)
I have problems inserting new rows in selected files. The files with the problems have a macro. I don't know if the problem can lie within the macro. There is no error message, it just won't insert the new row(s).

I have a whole ton of *.dbf files (98 to be exact), that are from ArcGIS shapefiles. These date1_date2.dbf files have point names, and values, as shown below.

I'm trying to figure out how to transpose each of the dbf files and save them as a text file (tab deliminated). My original plan involved saving them all as text files, then using a convoluted Unix script (I'm what you call a "dirty programmer") to transpose them and then combine them all into a single file. Since there are so many files (and I plan to do this in the future as well), I thought if I could at least automate the text file creation, I'd be ahead of the game. Even better would be a macro that will transpose the data for EACH file, then create a 99 (98 files + header row) row, 5 column text file. Creating the text files (1 text file for each dbf file) automatically .
All the *.dbf files will have exactly the same # rows/columns (2 columns, 6 rows)
This is what I've tried so far.
1)open one of the dbf files in Excel
2)record my marco (using the Personal Macro Workbook option - so it will be available in any workbook)
2a) transpose data (and paste it right below the original data so that the new data is in rows 7 and 8 of the same file)
2b) save as text file (tab deliminated)
2c) stop recording, and end up with this:
