Referencing Variable Workbook Tab In VLookup?

Nov 29, 2012

I have a challenge with Vlookups!

I have one workbook called Ratecards, which contains various tabs which are named based on a client code. e.g. ABC02

I then have another workbook which has employees in column B and the client code in C3.

The current Vlookup is =VLOOKUP(B8,'[ratecards.xlsx]ABC02'!$A$5:$N$168,4,false) which works fine for one client.

I want to substitute the ABC02 in the vlookup for cell ref C3, as the contents of C3 is variable and I want it to tell the sheet which ratecard to refer to.

Variable Data Referencing

Apr 23, 2009

I have a word table(s) which I need to paste into excel, its a quotation sheet and this document always has the same basic format. I then need to copy across specification items to another sheet between 2 points in column A ie between points TEXT1 (A25) and TEXT2(A40) so cells A26:A39 in this instance but this can be between 1 or 100 items.

Text 2 is the start of a costing section and wouldn't be transferred.

What i am looking to do is write a formula which will look in sheet1 at column A and find "TEXT 1" at A25 then copy items across until it comes to "TEXT2" at A40 but is flexible enough to cope with various numbers of items.

Referencing Defined Worksheet Variable In Formula In VBA?

Oct 19, 2012

I have created a userform that once the user clicks the okay button, the information is transferred to a worksheet template named 'PO Template', copied, and renamed. That portion works great. I then have code for a summary worksheet named 'PO Log' that finds the next empty row on the log and enters a formula referencing back to the newly created 'PO Form' (note - 'PO Form' is a variable as the actual worksheet name changes with the user input). The formula on the 'PO Log' references the 'PO Form' literally, which gives me a REF! error because there is no sheet actually named that. I've tried defining POForm in the code as a string so I can enter it into the formula code but I get an error because it's already defined as a variable. I've entered the sub routine for clicking the okay button below:

Code:
Sub OkayButton_Click()
'Make PO Template Active

Referencing Sheet Code Names By Variable

Jul 18, 2006

I have a set of worksheets (Sheet31 through Sheet49 by codename) produced by a machine in the lab. I want to create a summary sheet that references cells in those worksheets.

Rather than go through the annoyance of doing this manually 40+ times I'm working on creating a macro to populate the summary sheet for me.

This is what I have so far

For J = 31 To 49
ResultSht = SheetJ.Name
Sheet1.Activate
ActiveSheet.Range("A4").End(xlDown).Offset(1, 0).Select

It hangs up on the "SheetJ.Name" however. My objective is to be using the object SheetJ, where the object SheetJ is the codename of the results sheet I'm trying to reference (for example, in the first pass through the loop it would be Sheet31). Could someone point out my mistake in this object reference?

Macro To Create Columns By Referencing A Variable Column

Jul 11, 2014

I've only done a small amount of macros with VBA.

I want to create a macro to insert 12 cells left of a column labeled "This Year" As the spreadsheet grows (by 12 columns @ year) the "This Year" column moves to the right. Thus I need to reference the range off of that column and then insert 12 columns directly to the left of it each year. Can I somehow reference the label "This Year"?

I then need to enter the month labels in the new columns row 8.

My problem is trying to reference off the "This Year" column.

VLOOKUP Cell Referencing #VALUE Error

Oct 1, 2009

I'm working on a spreadsheet for a gaming community. This sheet is used by more than 3000+ players and growing. It has to be updated roughly twice a week for new inventory items, which can range from 1 to 3 new items weekly.

To make it easier on new and existing members, I want to create a way to make updates with the spreadsheet easier and to allow players an easier way of updating the spreadsheet rather than re-entering all the data over and over again twice a week.

So, I started to use VLOOK in some formulas to look at the data and pull the corresponding information. However, this same information is used throughout the sheet and referencing this information has brought about #VALUE errors that I cannot seem to figure out how to get around.

I've included a copy of the spreadsheet to download and review in hopes of finding a solution.

Here's what this speadsheet is doing:
MyInventory is where the players will enter all their items, with some being drop-down selections and manual entry.
The LookupedInventory worksheet is where the VLOOKUP (columns C,G,J,Q,etc.) formula is used to look up entries in the MyInventory worksheet and pull their values over to the LookupedInventory worksheet.
Now these values from the LookupedInventory will be carried over into two other worksheets, InventoryTableAttack and InventoryTableDefense. These two worksheets are where my #VALUE errors are appearing. If the cell referenced is empty, the #VALUE error appears. However, if the cell references a number, the rest of the formulas tied to to this cell reference work. However, since there are errors, the rest of the worksheet cannot function until I fix all the #VALUE errors.
So, what I'm seeking is to see where my issue is and what I need to do to fix it.

If I need to take a different approach to this, please let me know what that is and how to go about doing it.

I've even thought about a macros that copies and paste all the current data from an older spreadsheet to the new one, but I'm not that good at macros. If I can stay away from macros, that would be good, but if not, then I'll have to dig in my heels and start leaning.

Vlookup - Referencing Sheet Index

Dec 4, 2009

I am trying to find out whether it is possible to reference to a sheet index number, instead of sheet name, in a VLOOKUP formula.

For instance, normally I would write:

VLOOKUP(A1,'ExampleSheet'!A1:B10,2,False)

(I hope got the translation to English language Excel correct)

Let's say that the sheet index of Examplesheet is 2 (at least it is 2 the way VBA sees it).

Is there a way I could reference sheet number 2 in the VLOOKUP formula, instead of its name? My sheet names vary, but the formula should look in the same area, regardless of name.

Referencing Cell Based On User Input That Corresponds To VLookup

Jun 26, 2014

So my issue this time is that I have a bunch of columns that correspond to a month. If the user wants to view data from that month column then they have to link to that cell specifically (the worksheet being used is different than the one in which the month columns are)

My goal was to create a single cell in which the user typed in a month abbreviation such as jan, feb, mar.. so on and so forth. From there they correspond to a vlookup table which tells you which month is in what column (because that part never changes) so jan is in column c and feb is in column d... continuing until december is in column n. So the vlookup corresponds to the table and that works fine, type jan into the cell and the vlookup returns c. So i think this will work.

My problem is that in the cell I am typing this in I want it to be a part of a whole cell reference such as c5 or d7 where the 5 or 7 is a constant (I have that part down) however the reference is to another sheet. So in sheet 2 I want to reference sheet 1 i.e.

Formula: [Code].....

<-- is the desired return.

Right now (in sheet 2) I have

Formula: [Select Code] .....

Which returns the desired d5 but as text and not referencing sheet one. I tried

Formula: [Code]....

But this makes the vlookup malfunction (i think it starts looking in sheet 1 for the month cell but it is not and can not be there.

SO how do i force a vlookup to turn into a cell reference, and how do i make that cell reference come from a different worksheet without causing the vlookup to malfunction.

Formula Referencing Another Workbook?

Mar 20, 2012

I'm having an issue with a formula that references another workbook, and I'm not sure what the culprit is.

The formula is this: =IF(ISERROR(E4/VLOOKUP(D4,'C:Documents and SettingsusernameMy DocumentsRoom Capacity Master List.xlsx'!Table2[#All],2)),"",E4/VLOOKUP(D4,'C:Documents and SettingsusernameMy DocumentsRoom Capacity Master List.xlsx'!Table2[#All],2))

It works just fine on the initial pass. When I reopen the book and it prompts if I'd like to update the data, and I select yes, everything goes away. Cells E4 and D4 are both part of a PivotTable, not sure if that is important or not. This is happening on Excel 2010 running on XP.

Referencing Ranges In Workbook That Is Closed

Jun 12, 2006

Is it possible to reference a named range in a workbook that is not active, one that has been closed but still available within a directory. This closed workbook has named ranges that are being added to from time to time so the named range is growing.

This workbook is to be use as a master list of all data that will be used for validation, VLOOKUPS and what ever other types of referencing I may need in other workbooks which are ALL created from the ONE template, so each workbook will be setup exactly the same, but NOT the MASTER LIST OF DATA.

If it is possible I'll definately need help with code.

Regarding the Template I'm using, I'd like to add a new sheet and have the functionality of buttons and drop down boxes to access saved workbooks (which will all be in the same directory) and also the ability to create a new workbook from my template by perhaps using a button.

Subscript Out Of Range Referencing A Workbook

Jul 30, 2007

I've written somewhat complex code (well complex by my standards) on my own computer and I have tried to put the project onto another computer so that they can use it. The code involves opening a workbook and then saving it under the variable name strName1. Then it activates another workbook and puts information into that workbook from the strName1 workbook. The strName1 workbook is open this whole time. However, I get an out of range error when trying to do this part (the code is shown below).

ActiveCell = Workbooks(strName1). Sheets("Basic Overview").Range("B1").Value

I am confused because this works alright on my computer, I have copied the root directories for the file exactly as it is on my computer and when debugging the code I can see that it has picked up the variable strName1 correctly (so this isn't the problem). I've also tried writing the entire root directory in insetad of just Workbooks(strName1) but it still says its out of range.

INDIRECT And Named Ranges Referencing Closed Workbook

Oct 4, 2005

I have tried using PULL from Harlan Grove's posts to workaround this but am coming up with #VALUE errors.

Here's what I have:

Column B contains the acct # being referenced e.g. 5230
Column E="_"&Br where r is the row #
Column F=MATCH($B$3,INDIRECT(Er&"Rows")) where _acct#Rows is a named
range referring to an external workbook e.g. _5230Rows
Columns G-R=INDEX(INDIRECT($Er),$Fr,COLUMN(G$6)) where_acct# is a named
range referencing an external workbook e.g. _5230

I thought that INDEX($Er, $Fr, COLUMN(G$6)) should work in Columns G-R however it returns #REF!

I need a solution to replace INDIRECT so I do not have to have both workbooks open together. The named ranges are static, but reference external workbooks.

Create Copy Workbook With Cell Referencing To Original?

Apr 15, 2014

At my work we are using Excel as a CMS to produce SQL scripts for insertion into a database. The data is then turned into mobile web pages. This involves multiple workbooks - 1 for each main page with the sub-pages as extra worksheets in the book.

Much of the data is duplicated so we have created master workbooks then copied them and laboriously referenced the relevant cells back to the original. That way if any data in the master is changed, all copies will change simultaneously.

This is obviously not the most efficient way of publishing web pages but we are stuck with it for now. So I am wondering if it is possible to write a VBA code to create a copy of the master and then reference all required tables in the worksheets automatically? The tables are all named ranges.

Referencing Userform Control From Another Userform / Class Via Variable

May 3, 2012

I have several non-modal userforms in my App, some of them have date-fields that require manual entry typing of dd/mm/yy etc (No single userform has more than one date-box in it, this I think may be pivotally useful)

Now the Userform 'Calendar' that is built on the class of the same (cCalendar) name, has the write value line 'ActiveCell.value = theCal.value'

I'm looking to change this to refer to the correct userform.Textbox value, depending on which form is open.

I would imagine I could simply have a global string, whose value is set (or re-set) whenever a Userform is initialized (some sort of 'ActiveUF.value = Me.Name), where I get lost is referring to the components by name, so as to have a case statement by where I go:

Code:

Private Sub theCal_AfterUpdate()
Select Case ActiveUF
Case "AddForm"
application.vbe.components("AddForm").controls("AddFormDatePicker").value = theCal.value
Case "EditForm"
'.... etc
end select
end sub

better way of doing this (instead of passing around the userform name as a variable) - or proper syntax for referring to controls outside of the 'active' userform (but an open userform nonetheless)?

Every time I have to do this particular thing with userforms, I completely forget how, and the object browser always leads me on an infinite loop of Application.vbe.activevbproject.vbcomponents.vbe.active....

PS - there may be one slight complication to the process - one of the forms, has a 2-tab page in it, each page having similar (but named differently) fields. So I may need to be able to throw in 'Activepage' or whatnot

Userform VBA - VLookup Data Range From One Workbook And Populate Into Another Workbook

Feb 9, 2013

what VBA is required to have a combo box in a userform look up data in a different workbook, then populate that data into the drop down list of that combo box for a user to select.

I have managed to successfully create a vlookup for a combo box in a userform that looks up data in a named range in another worksheet within the same workbook and then populate that data into a field in a worksheet within the same workbook. However, I want to change this so the combo box on a userform (in one workbook) will look up data from a named range in a second workbook without opening the second workbook. At the moment, the code I have that will 'submit' the user selected data from the combo box drop down list works.

The code that has worked so far to vlookup data for the combo box from a worksheet within the same workbook is:

Code:
Private Sub UserForm_Initialize()
Dim pName As Range
Dim ws As WorksheetSet ws = Worksheets("vlookupsheet")
For Each pName In ws.Range("ProjectName")
With Me.cboProjectName
.AddItem pName.Value
End WithNext pName
Me.cboProjectName.SetFocus
End Sub

Do I need specify the file path of the second workbook that will contain the data for the combo box as well as the name of the worksheet and named range in that second workbook?
