INDIRECT And Named Ranges Referencing Closed Workbook
Oct 4, 2005
I have tried using PULL from Harlan Grove's posts to workaround this but am coming up with #VALUE errors.
Here's what I have:
Column B contains the acct # being referenced e.g. 5230
Column E="_"&Br where r is the row #
Column F=MATCH($B$3,INDIRECT(Er&"Rows")) where _acct#Rows is a named
range referring to an external workbook e.g. _5230Rows
Columns G-R=INDEX(INDIRECT($Er),$Fr,COLUMN(G$6)) where_acct# is a named
range referencing an external workbook e.g. _5230
I thought that INDEX($Er, $Fr, COLUMN(G$6)) should work in Columns G-R however it returns #REF!
I need a solution to replace INDIRECT so I do not have to have both workbooks open together. The named ranges are static, but reference external workbooks.

Is it possible to reference a named range in a workbook that is not active, one that has been closed but still available within a directory. This closed workbook has named ranges that are being added to from time to time so the named range is growing.
This workbook is to be use as a master list of all data that will be used for validation, VLOOKUPS and what ever other types of referencing I may need in other workbooks which are ALL created from the ONE template, so each workbook will be setup exactly the same, but NOT the MASTER LIST OF DATA.
If it is possible I'll definately need help with code.
Regarding the Template I'm using, I'd like to add a new sheet and have the functionality of buttons and drop down boxes to access saved workbooks (which will all be in the same directory) and also the ability to create a new workbook from my template by perhaps using a button.

I have the following formula which i'm using to indirectly reference a worksheet. The worksheet i'm referencing includes named ranges that i'd like to call on but i can't get the syntax right.
Code:
=SUMPRODUCT(--(INDIRECT("'"&HH_Elec_Title&"'!B15:B19")>=D5),--(INDIRECT("'"&HH_Elec_Title&"'!B15:B19")

I have a dynamic named rage "AREA" which can contains values like "Area1, Area2, Area3, ..."
For each item in list AREA I have another dynamic named range, named exactly as the item, so for example I have a dynamic named range "AREA1" with values "SubArea1.1, SubArea1.2, ..." and also a dynamic named range "AREA2" with values "SubArea2.1, SubArea2.2, ..." and so on, I think it's pretty clear and straight forward (I am modelling the fact to have several areas and each of them has several sub areas).
Now, I have cell A1 being validated against the list AREA, that is, the source for A1 is "=AREA", so that I can choose one of the values in the named range AREA; I also have cell A2 being validated against the list that I choose in cell A1 using the INDIRECT function, that is, the source for A2 is "=INDIRECT(A1)".
I have already realised that this approach for cell A2 does not work, as it seems that INDIRECT does not work for dynamica named cells.
An option would be using the following for the source of A2: ....

The following formula produces the desired result:
=COUNTIF(INDIRECT(TEXT(A8,"mmm")&"!B2:Z100"),"SK")
but replacing the range of cells with a dynamic named range returns #REF!:
=COUNTIF(INDIRECT(TEXT(A8,"mmm")&"!Data"),"SK")
where A8 is the date 01/01/07. I'm trying to count items within the range Jan!Data.
I'm not sure if I'm trying to do the impossible, or if I'm missing something.

Ok I have been trying to figure this out for way to long. Say I have a list of values in A1:A4. I have named this range MyRange. If I wanted to refer to this range somewhere else in the workbook and enter =MyRange it will only work provided the "=MyRange" is in the same rows as the original data.
For example if I enter MyRange in cells C1 through C4 it would mirror the data in column A. But if I enter MyRange in C5:C8 I would get a #Value error. Does anyone have any ideas to make this more of an absolute reference.
Basically anywhere I enter MyRange into a cell I want to see A1. If i drag that formula down I want to see A2, A3, A4, etc....

I am trying to use a combination of dependent named ranges and variable length ranges, so one can select in eg Col A truck name from a drop down list, and then in Col B, the engine variant only for that make of truck. The indirect(substitute) function works well if I define the dependent range name (the engine variant) using actual cell refs. However if I use the variable length name definition as described in Ozgrid (ie with offset function), I get an error message and the dropdown menu freezes. Is there anyway to overcome this without resorting to VBA?

I can use a dynamic named range and a direct reference to the name and the DV works.
I can use a standard named range (not dynamic) and an INDIRECT() reference to a cell with the name of the range in it and the DV works.
But if I try to use a dynamic named range and an indirect reference to a cell with the name of the range in it, the DV fails.
Any workarounds out there? This project includes a LOT of DV lists, getting them to self-maintain is important if I can do it.

I am having an issue when I try a chart a named range. The named range "Refers To" is
Code:
=OFFSET($A$1,(MATCH("Kevin",$A:$A,0)-1),,,COUNTA(INDIRECT(ADDRESS((MATCH("Kevin",$A:$A,0)-1),1,1,1)
&":"&ADDRESS((MATCH("Kevin",$A:$A,0)-1),100,1,1))))
As far as I can tell, the formula works just fine. If you look in the Name Manager and check on that Name, the highlighted box shows up exactly what it should and if you do a simple MAX test, it displays the correct MAX value from that range.
The problem comes in when I try and add it to a chart. Instead of a displaying all the values in the range, it displays nothing. Doesn't flag up any errors, just nothing.
The reason I chose to do it this way is that the table contents could change on a daily basis and so could the position of the row and I don't want to have to keep changing the references in the graph so make sure the right data is being displayed. Is it just that charts don't play well with the INDIRECT function?

I'm reading data, from specific cells off a closed workbook. When the sheet that needs said cell data is activated, it automatically opens the workbook and references the sheet nessecary. The issue I've come across, is I now need to access another workbook (Easy to open) with 12 sheets 1 for each month, and only read from the worksheet of the actual Month...
Kind of lost on how to possibly make this work. I basically need something like:
=location/[workbook.xls]Month(Today())!cell

I am trying to create a one-page spreadsheet which links info from other various spreadsheets. There is one spreadsheet I am trying to link to which has information listed where Column A is the product name, Column B is the UPC and Column C is the sales rank. I created an offset formula that pulls the top 5 rated items by sales rank (Column C) into my new spreadsheet, but whenever the source workbook is closed, I get error messages. Is there a way around this so the workbook I am pulling my information from does not have to be open.

I have a number of files in a directory, with data in columns A:E, and variable rows deep (200-300) that I’d like to copy to the active workbook. I’d like to have a file window open to the same set directory (ie. “CArchives” and be able to select any file in that directory to copy.
Note:
There are 2 separate ranges to copy, which must be done separately because the headings are to be moved 2 columns over - also, there is data in beteen the headings and main data in the active workbook.
Range 1: Two headings cells in A1:B1 get transposed to C1:D1.
Range 2: the files’ data starts at A4 but gets inserted starting at cell A6 of the active workbook.

named range called "Students" is getting populated from A1:A10 with values:
Student1
Student2
Student3
Student4
Student5
Student6
Student7
Student8
Student9
Student10
I would like to put this data in other worksheet.
and instead of putting all the students, it just puts only
Student7
Student8
Student9
Student10
I entered in named range name ("students") in all cells I wanted to put data in.

I would like to know if their is a way to export about 100 Named Ranges from 1 workbook to another. I work with about 20 pricing templates and have just been tasked to start tracking about 100 of the fields out of each template. I named about 100 ranges on one of the templates and want to name those same fields on the other templates with the same names so I can build a macro to just pull all of those ranges from the different templates into a metric tracking workbook. My question is if there is a way to name those same ranges on the other workbooks w/o doing it manually. If I copy and paste or copy the worksheets from one book to another I will spend just as much time deleting links from the other workbook as well as updating the contract information.
All of the Ranges are Sheets that are named exactly the same and in the same exact cells on each sheet.

I have VBA code that copies over several sheets from a workbook, but I'd rather not have all the named ranges come through. Whenever I run the macro it gives me this notice: "A formula or sheet you want to move or copy contains the name 'rngRegion2', which already exists on the destination worksheet..." The destination sheet doesn't originally have this range already, it runs into problems because the sheets I'm copying have rngRegion2 defined on different sheets. I'd like to try and avoid this problem all together by not copying named ranges if possible.
If thats not a viable option, is there code that I can use to tell it to automatically select "Yes - To use the name as defined in the destination sheet" as opposed to prompting the user to select yes/no?

However I am trying to use same macro in the another file and the problem I am facing is there a lot more named ranges and I want to run the macro for only selected NAMED RANGE. In this case 2 Named Range / 24 Named range.
What part of code do I need to change and to what to make it work for just 2 named ranges ?

Applying my indirect formula to the rest of the cells in my sheet properly.
I am getting the values of cells in other sheets, using INDIRECT to use cell values to name the sheets. Here is an example of how the cells are now...
A
B
1
Sheet 1
=(INDIRECT("'"&A1&"'!$A$5"))
[Code] ....
The formulas in B1 are going to return the value of A5 in "Sheet 1" (or whatever value is in A1) and B2 will return the vale cell A5 in 'Sheet 2. The next line will be the value of A6 in Sheet 1, and the next will be A6 in Sheet 2 and so on.
So I have quite a few rows to get through I want to be able to autofill so it looks like this...
A
B
1
Sheet 1
=(INDIRECT("'"&A1&"'!$A$5"))
2
Sheet 2
=(INDIRECT("'"&A2&"'!$A$5"))
[Code] ......
As it is now, when I autofill, it autofills the Sheet name part of it. It is looking like this...
A
B
1
Sheet 1
=(INDIRECT("'"&A1&"'!$A$5"))
[Code] ......
Excel isn't intuitive enough to know I want to move cells in the referenced sheet.

I have a workbook for each day recording energy usage from 52 meters,
I need to collate the data on a single workbook.
The only way i can think of doing it is to use the INDIRECT function but this will not work on closed workbook.
I need to sum the contents of B1:AW1 on the closed workbook and input that into a cell on the new sheet.
then repeated for B2:AW2, B3:AW3 up to B52:AW52 once this has been done the process needs to be repeated for 31 workbooks.
The end product should be 31 Columns (one for each day ini the last month) and 52 rown (one for each meter) and the total daily consumption for each meter (sum of column B:AW)

I wonder if there is any easy way of findinig (numerical) duplicate entries in a column? Some cells are empty, in case this might cause a problem. I do not wish to delete duplicate rows automatically, just to find them. Why not just sort it? Because indirect referenceing is used where each row corresponds to a separate spreadsheet in the workbook. What I need is to find the duplicate so that I manually can erase one of the spreadsheets for the particular case and adjusting a reference list.

I have a file created in Excel 2003 that uses a vlookup to reference another file, also created in Excel 2003. The function returns VALUE when the referenced file is closed. I get the VALUE error whether or not I update links upon opening the file. If I open the source file, the function calculates properly.
Here is the formula when the referenced file is open:
=VLOOKUP(A38,'[June Scorecard confirmation.xls]VPSC Summary'!$C$10:$F$22,4,FALSE)
The full & correct path appears in the formula when the referenced file is closed.
Columns C, D & E in the referenced range contain text, column F contains a Sum. This file is linked to another file, also using lookups. The linked area in this file works without problem, but it is a precedent to the calculation in column F.
Both these files reside on a network in subdirectories of the same logical drive. I am using a laptop that briefly had Excel 2007 installed on it, but was wiped clean before it was issued to me.

I have 20 worksheets that each have a 4-week training block for a University Athletic Program. Each worksheet has 5 named ranges for days of the week. The sheet for Block 1 has the named ranges: B1M, B1T, B1W, B1TH and B1F. From a Summary sheet, I have VLOOKUP formulas that each look in 1 specific named range. I have to insert the Name in thousands of formulas so I have listed the names in a column in the Summary sheet and then referenced the cell with Indirect from in the formula. Example B1M in cell C3 would have Indirect(C3) in the formula, but this causes the formula to become volatile and the workbook calculates very slowly. Is there a way to format the name in C3 or reference it in the formula so that it is not volatile?

Merge two columns into one list in excel
I would like to combine List1 and List2 into a 3rd named range called List3. I was wondering if this were possible without using any additional cells/columns (i.e. I don't want to use Column C like in the example shown in the link above).
Here's the formula from the example:
Code:
=IFERROR(INDEX(List1,ROWS(C1:$C$1)),IFERROR(INDEX(List2,ROWS(C1:$C$1)-ROWS(List1)),""))
I've played around with it, but could not come with any that worked.

I'm trying to use Indirect in a formula where named range refers to multiple non adjacent cells; e.g. ever other cell {A1, A3, A5... etc}; however, when I use indirect, I recieve a #ref error. Replacing the indirect with the actual named range will make the formula work just fine, or using a named range that a continuous range works fine as well. It seems that indirect doesn't like non continuous ranges. ?

I have an Excel file that contains formulas that reference external workbooks on a shared network. Each month, I copy the column of formulas over to the next month's column. Then, to update the file path, I highlight the new column and do a Find-and-Replace, swapping the previous month's name for the current month. This practice works fine. The only thing is ... the "Open File" promptbox appears for each formula where I updated the file path (i.e. and this can be hundreds instances!). I wind-up having to choose the file from the exact same file path. It is an unnecessary, and annoying extra step to take.

How would I used the indirect function to reference a named range in the workbook in formula creation.
For instance, if in cell A1 I have entered the text "Sales" which is also a named range in the workbook. Then in cell A2 I tried entering the following formula to sum based on the entry in cell A1 using the indirect funtion. For instance:
=sum(indirect(A1))
In this instance I was hoping this formula would then sum the amounts in the "Sales" named range. And, if I changed the text in cell A1 to "Cost" for instance (another named range in the workbook), it would sum the amounts in the "Cost" named range. Allowing for a dynamic formula based on the entry in cell A1.
I'm using Excel 2007.
