Rounding Based On Significant Digit Value
Dec 16, 2013
how to set an Excel formula to calculate rounding based on the criteria listed below?
When rounding, digits to the right of the significant less than five (5) will be truncated. Digits to the right of the significant digit greater than five (5) will cause the significant digit to round up by one (1). If the digit to the right of the significant digit is five(5) and the significant digit is even, the digits are truncated. If the digit to the right of the significant digit is five (5) and the significant digit is odd, the significant digit is rounded up by one (1).
Ex:
0.230,0.231,0.232,0.233,0.234 all round to 0.23
0.235,0.236,0.237,0.238,0.239 all round to 0.24
0.240,0.241,0.242,0.243,0.244 and 0.245 all round to 0.24
0.246,0.247,0.248,0.249 all round to 0.25

I have a large number that has 6 figures.I want to display this number to 3 significant figures on the spreadsheet, but I have more formulas that need to use the unrounded number.So is there a way to DISPLAY the number to 3 sig figs whilst keeping it as the complicated number for the rest of the formulas?

I have a percentage calculation that I need to ensure excel does not round up the last digit.
My calculation is 2463000(cell:I13) divided by 257000(cell: I14+I15)
Excel calculates this value to be 0.958365759
However I need it to display and re-use only 0.9583657 as my calculation has to be precise to 7 decimal places.
If I use the formula =ROUND(I13/SUM(I14+I15),7) then excel returns the value 0.9583658 - it rounds the last digit up.
I have tried to use the option "Set precision as displayed" and set my decimal places to 7 but this still sees my 7th digit rounded up.
How do I set it so the 7th digit is not rounded up.
My original formula is =IF(AND((L3+L8+L13)<=O3,(L3+L8+L13+L18)>O3),((O3-(L3+L8+L13))*I18/L18))
I have updated it to be =IF(AND((L3+L8+L13)<=O3,(L3+L8+L13+L18)>O3),((O3-(L3+L8+L13))*(ROUND(I18/L18,7))))

I know you can take a number from one cell and combine it with number from another cell and make it one number. What I need to do is the reverse. Take a two digit number in a cell and separate it into single digits in two cells. If you have the number 50 in a cell, then is there a formula that will take the 5 and put it in cell and take the 0 and put it in the cell beside it?

I have 4 and 5 digit numbers. For the 4 digit numbers, I want to be able to distinguish between the numbers by the last digit. For the 5 digit numbers, I want to be able to distinguish between the numbers by the last two digits.
Example: For 4 digit numbers, I would like to do something with all numbers ending in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. For 5 digit numbers, I would like to do something with numbers ending in 10, 11, 12, 20, 21, etc.
The first step in being able to do this, I guess is distiguishing between 4 and 5 digit numbers, which I know can be done by the number lenght. However, the second part of looking at the last digit or the two last digits I don't know how to do.

I have a list of data that is copied from another application. Once data is pasted into Excel it is one cell. My challenge is following. I need to extract only the rows that appear below particular 9 characther alfa numeric code which is the first character in a row. This character however only appears sporadically so there is a whole list of data underneath it. See below....

I have a spreadsheet with a row for a company name, their offer price underneath that, and a 1,2, or 3 underneath that. In a seperate tab I have the offer prices in order of rank with the company name next to the corresponding price using the Index function. I also need to be able to color code the background of the offer price based upon the 1,2 or 3 associated with each name. I am new to the Index stuff so I need some help putting this one together.

I am trying to round similar to Banker's Rounding or Scientific Rounding but I can't find a consistent formula that works perfect with decimals.
Using three decimal places for all the samples, I can get 0.0785 to round to 0.078 but 0.1785 wants to round to 0.179 instead of staying 0.078. Or 0.0005 will round to 0 but 0.5115 wants to round to 0.511 instead of 0.512.
Here is a list of sample numbers along with desired results:
.0785 should be .078
.5115 should be .512
.5035 should be .504
.0005 should be 0
.0025 should be .002
.0194 should be .019
.0195 should be .02
.0135 should be .014
.0115 should be .012
.8115 should be .812
I cannot find a formula which gives me all of these results. Here is a list of the formulas I have tried so far (NOTE: cell A2 is the working cell in my worksheet where I enter the number to be rounded)
1) =MROUND(A2,0.001)
3) =ROUND(A2,3)
4) =IF(ISERROR(IF(MOD(MID(A2,4,1),2)=1,CEILING(A2,0.001),FLOOR(A2,0.001))),0,IF(MOD(MID(A2,4,1),2)=1,CEILING(A2,0.001),FLOO R(A2,0.001)))
5) =EVEN(A2)
6) =ROUNDUP(A2,3)
7) =ROUNDDOWN(A2,3)

How to calculate a check digit in excel. The details to calculate this are as follows:
All variables in the calculation are positive integers.
We take each integer of the pro number and multiply it by a value and sum them to get a total.
An Example: 8 Digit Pro Number: 66988757
Pro Number: 6 6 9 8 8 7 5 7
Position in the Pro Number: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Multiply each digit in the pro number by (10-position) in the number, to achieve a sum.
Using our example pro again:
6*(10-1) + 6*(10-2) + 9*(10-3) + 8*(10-4) + 8*(10-5) + 7*(10-6) + 5*(10-7) + 7*(10-8)
6*9 + 6*8 + 9*7 + 8*6 + 8*5 + 7*4 + 5*3 + 7*2
54+ 48+ 63+48+40+28+15+14 = 310
Take the Sum of the previous calculation and divide it by 11
310/11 = 28
(Actually, it's 28.181818, but since we're working with integers, we truncate everything behind the decimal).
Figure a remainder by multiplying the quotient by 11 and subtracting from the sum.
Remainder = 310 - (28*11) ---> Remainder = 310 - 308 ----> Remainder = 2
Check Digit = 11- Remainder
Check Digit = 11 - 2 ---> Check Digit = 9
Note: if the check digit is 10 or 11, need to subtract 10 from the Check Digit.

I have a column of numbers, all with varying numbers of digits. I want to make them all have only 4 DIGITS in total (regardless of where the decimal is located... so there could be 4,3, 2, 1,or, 0 decimal places). I just want to make everything the same number of digits.

3.756897
23.4597861
103.459786
82
5.45667891
29.8975316
I need the first three significant numbers:
3.75
23.4
103
82
5.45
29.8
I used the LEFT function for a while until I started getting numbers over 100 and numbers with 0 decimals.
Does Excel have a function that will return the first x significant numbers? No rounding; just the first three numbers.

I have been trying to find a way to take the result of a formula, calculate how many decimal places based on significant figures, then rewrite the formula with the Round function.
=(5-2)/2
result is 1.5 taken to 3 significant figures is 1.50
=Round((5-2)/2),2)
I need to keep the formula in the cell for validation purposes and I need the result truncated to significant figures for accuracy. I am currently using the significant figure formula found on the forum for my data with numbers.

Does anybody know of a special format or a rounding function that displays or rounds a number off to a specific number of significant digits.
Lets say I would like 3 significant digits this would be the results:
0.40019 -> 0.400
6.543 -> 6.54
12.543 -> 12.5
32 -> 32.0
564.7894 -> 565
54387 -> 54400 (or 5.44E+4 to be correct, but i can live with 54400)

Is it possible to specify a number of significant figures (e.g., 3), so that Excel displays only 3 significant figures but RETAINS the full number? For example, take the number 16355.876: is it possible to have Excel display the number as 16400, yet retain the original number 16355.876? I know this is possible when the numbers are less than 1, but I can't seem to figure out how to do it with big numbers.

When I expand the viewable digits on L16 and L17, they have ALL zeros after the cents. (I went out at least 25 digits). I can't be the first one encountering this.

I need a macro where I can highlight a column and change all of the 2 digit years to a 4 digit year (actually, some of the 2 digit years are only 1 digit, e.g. "9" instead of "09").
I have an if then statement that I can use in the column after it, but I'd rather change the actual numbers in the original column, rather than adding another column (and having to keep the original, too).
The statement I had was:
=if(A1>=50,1900+A1,2000+A1)
I just copy dragged down to get the cell numbers for the rest of the column... but using A1 was just for an example, here, it's not necessarily going to be in that column. It needs to be just whichever cells I select.
It seems like it should be pretty simple, but I don't know how to word it in a macro.
Starting Column Example:
12
13
14
99
11
[Code] ......
For some reason I can't get rid of the borders...

I have 2 digit years (98, 99, 00, 01) that I need to convert to 4 digit years (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001). There is one year per cell. If it was simply a matter of adding 19 or 20 to the beginning of each, I could do that. But since there's a combination of both 19 and 20 that needs to be added and there all intermingled, I'm not sure how to do it.
Can a rule be written to add 19 to the beginning except if the current cell starts with a 0, then add 20? The highest year is 2008 (no 2010 to deal with).
Example:
98 --> 1998
99 --> 1999
00 --> 2000
01 --> 2001

what i am wanting to do is "round up or down to the nearest 5.00 mark. so for instance, the final price in this case would be 250.00 is this possible?

So in cell D7 I have the function ='1'!K33
K33 is from the Sheet labeled (1) obviously. Now the problem I am having is if the number 20.6, it automatically rounds up to 21. I need to number to round down to 20 regardless if its 20.1, or 20.9.
Since I already have a formula in D7, how do I still get the information from the other sheet but have the number round down for me. Is it possible?

Am currently calculating the total number of cartons used for different items with this formula:
=SUM(F99/352)+(H99/135)+(J99/110)+(L99/60)+(N99/28)
The divisors are the number of items in a carton.
Would like to round up each of the 5 subtotals in the above formula to the next full number, so that the total will be the sum of full numbers.
What would be the correct formula?

Cell "CostPerEvent" has the value .298896, and when I run the following statement I expect that A2 will contain the same value .298896, yet it is entered into the cell as .3
Cells(1, 2).Value = Range("CostPerEvent").Value
Is there some kind of implicit rounding going on? I rewrote the code to:
Cells(1, 2).Value = CDbl(Range("CostPerEvent").Value)
But I am curious whether this behavior is documented...
