Search Value In Multiple Text Files
Jul 29, 2006
I have patent numbers in column A of an excel sheet and would want to locate or search the specific text files (located in my D:Files folder) containing those values. If the value is found in myfile1.txt then the result should be outputted in column B containing the filename of the text file. For example:
Column A Column B
us20061234556b1 myfile1.txt
us20061434455a2 myfile2.txt
wo200612344556A myfile3.txt

I require the code for the following task.
I'm getting an input string from the user in an excel sheet(e.g. input.xls) .I have to search for that string in a group of excel files present in the same folder in which the input.xls file also present.The range of that cell in which the string is found (e.g. A1 ) has to be stored in a variable.
I know that Vlookup is an option but the number of excel files to be searched is more that 50.

I have a bunch of quotes in Excel format which have 5 columns ; Part number, Description, Qty, Cost, Total Cost, Unit List,Total List. I need a piece of code to open many excel files, look for a "part number" beginning with ED,DS,AP,MP or MDS and return the corresponding value in the "total cost" column then record the value in a separate spreadsheet.

I have a excel file that I enter information into. I have code that saves the files to a certain folder with the name, date, and time stamp for the file name. At the end of the day I might have 3 to 15 excel files I have created that day and I would like to take information from certain cells (examle: L3, B6, B7, B8, G8, and so on) and create a txt file with all of the information in it.
Example:
12/20/2007
Your Name
123 Somewhere St.
Here, OH 45111
Home Visit
12/20/2007
Someone Else
345 Anywhere St.
There, OH 45211

I cannot find Excel files that contain specific strings. For example, if I create a new file, and in the first cell type in "123456". Then save the file to the folder c:Temp Then in Windows Explorer, right-click on C:Temp and select "Search . . ." Then under "A word or phrase in the file", type in: 123456
It will NOT find the file! It will find a txt file or a doc file, but not xls files.
I thought maybe it fails because that is a number. But I have hundreds of Excel files with Integer numbers stored in "General" format cells and I desperately need to be able to search them to see which files contain certain numbers. It all started with some files that were sent to me - they work PERFECTLY for searching cells for numbers. So strange - yet if I open the file then save it . . . no changes or edits at all, just Open and Save. . . then the search fails for all numbers in that file. This is so perplexing that I have placed 2 zip Sample files on my website for you to Download: http://www.infocellar.com/Samples.zip
Unzip the two files to any folder. One is named "Sample-Works.xls" - Then do a Windows Search for any number in the file, here is one to try that is in the two files: 174026 And it will list "Sample-Works.xls" but it will NOT list "Sample-Fails.xls", even though BOTH FILES ARE IDENTICAL! I copied the same file twice and then named them. The only difference is that I opened the file Sample-Fails.xls and then immediately Saved it, which as I stated earlier, makes it fail all Searches from that point forward.

Currently using the following code to "pull" a range data from a closed workbook.
[Code] ......
This works well if I know which workbook and sheet I will be getting the info from. What I would like to do is add a function that searches through a few workbooks looking for a worksheet name that matches a value in a cell in my original workbook.
ie. Workbook 1, cell A1 = "Jelly"
search through excel files for the workbook that contains the worksheet named "Jelly" and then copy a range from that worksheet back to workbook 1.

I have about 100 Excel files in one folder that need to be saved as text files. They can keep the same name, but simply need to be converted to text files. I'd like to use VBA for this and I can't find examples that do exactly that...or ones that my limited knowledge can handle.
Excel files exist in C:Source and ALL of them should be saved as text files in C:Destination. Maybe there is an easier way, but I thought for sure there was a routine I could use.

Here is a project I can’t seem to do on my own if you can point me in the right direction I would be grateful! here is the best suedo code to describe the needs of the script:
In the open workbook named MASTER, on Worksheet named -MASTER- ( Let’s refer to this all as just MASTER)
(In production, the name of this workbook will be an account #_ date, and the worksheet will be a date)
For each numeric value in row 6 (we’ll call these values AD###) of MASTER
'*****Part one of routine*****
Search directory "H:AccountingAdvertising Accounts" for workbook named AD### AX.xls
(Note the AX suffix of the file name)
If match is found open workbook and proceed to Part two
If match is not found, goto Private Sub AD_MISSING
'*****Part two of routine*****

I did a search for " import text" and found some promising leads, but not exactly what I was looking for. I have tried running macros and looking at the code but don't know how to pass the file names from the the D47:D147 range to VBA(see below). I saw elsewhere that Excel can be told to create a temporary batch file, and that the batch file with the command "copy text1.txt+text2.txt+text3.txt all.txt" for example could be used to merge the 3 text files into a file called all.txt. I don't however know how specify the path where copy starts, to tell the batch file to look in subdirectories or to pass the file into Excel. I've posted this question yesterday to Yahoo Answers http://tinyurl.com/omers and http://tinyurl.com/rfww9 without much luck.
Below is the macro I would like:I have text files whose names are found in the range D47:D147 although without the appended ".txt" extension. The sheets can only contain one name sometimes, but on average 8 to 10, so in the average case only cells D47:D56 would have entries.The text files are found in the say H:Textfiles directory or subdirectories.I would like Excel to find these files, concatenate them with a row between each file, and paste the results into cell K251.Finally, the text import wizard should be used with a space as a delimiter and the last 3 columns (it's sometimes only 2) of the concatenated file, not imported.

I have a spreadsheet with 1,000 rows of data.
Each Cell in Column A has a different long text string.
I need to see which (if any) of 10 specific small text strings exist within each long text string. Depending on which small text string is found I want to return a 3 digit code. If no small text string is found I want to return "Not Found"
E.g.:
- Cell A2 contains "randomtext,randomtext,APPLE,randomntext"
- I want to see if Cell A2 contains any of the words APPLE, ORANGE, CARROT.
- I want to return "APP", "ORG", "CAR" or "Not Found"
Q: What is the most elegant way to accomplish this within a single formula that I could paste into each cell in Column B?

I am pretty sure this will take a do while statement but I am not sure how to write it.

This is a great bit of code (I found), to import multiple text files.
I have one small issue -
currently it imports with each file going to a new column, like this: text file1 A1:A4, txt file2 B1:B4, txt file3 C1:C4 etc etc
And eventually i risk running out of columns because I'm working with a lot of text files.
Can someone tell me what to do to modify this code so it imports like this? :
text file1 A1:D1, txt file2 A2:D2, txt file3 A3:D3 ETC ETC
.e.g. first file imports across row1, second file across row2 etc
Sub test2()
Dim myDir As String, fn As String, ff As Integer, txt As String
Dim delim As String, n As Long, b(), flg As Boolean, x, t As Integer
myDir = "\BP1MELIS001SHARED_DATAEVERYONESolutions IntranetPriceMasterlogs" '

I have about 50 - 60 text files and I need to find certain values, namely Name, Account No, total amount under Portfolio Value in the text file and copy these values to a worksheet under column: Name, Account and Portfolio Value respectively. All new entries are paste one row below the existing data.
Some of the text files may not have any data in it or may not have the Portfolio Value as the monthly transactions may occupied 2 or 3 text files. Some text files may have 2 Name in it and there will be 2 Portfolio Values in it which I will need both to be copy to the worksheet.
I have attached both the Excel file and the dummy txt file.

In a folder I have several text files (each text file is a customer statement)
I get the files from the computer dept named randomly, I need to rename each
File to its customer ID number, each ID consists of 15 characters (including the dash characters) and is found on the 3rd row of the file (3rd row , skip one character And count 15 characters ex : 0010-902514-422)
I found a code that renames the text files incrementally (1,2,3…..). I need to modify the code so that instead of renaming the files that way I rename them by their ID number (get the ID of each file while looping then rename It by that ID)
One more thing, can I get the ID then skip 44 characters and attach the following 14 characters to the ID (ex : 0010-902514-422- Lebanese Pound). ttached is a folder containing an excel file with the code and 2 statements
Sub RenFile()

Dim intCounter As Integer
Dim datFile As Date
Dim strFile As String, strPath As String
strPath = ActiveWorkbook.Path

strFile = arrFiles(intCounter)
Name strPath & strFile As strPath & intCounter & ".txt"

How to determine the correct formula for this requirement?
Assuming I have 2 individual excel files and an index excel file (in reality, there are more than hundreds of file). For index excel, once the user enter part number (eg. 1 or 2), the excel will look for the part number excel file and determine vlookup function.
The only problem I have here is I can not make the index file automatically add the part number shown on most left column into the required formula (replace the part number file section).
I tried use the indirect function but this require each file to be opened, which is not possible for actual use. I am looking for a function that can work in closed worksheet.

I have about 10k poorly formatted txt files that I need to grab 4 items from each and put in a spreadsheet. How can this be done in Excel or should it be done in Access instead?
Here's a link to what each txt file looks like: MTRP88PF700721.txt
I only need the number next to Posting Journal on line 3 (12686 in this case), the 3 digit number next to Class Total on line 11 (101 in this case), the Extended Cost Final Total and the Extended Retail Final Total (23.77 and 39.30 in this case)
because one of my staff members is currently opening each txt file and typing these figures into a spreadsheet!

- which column/columns I want to import from files
- macro should automatically import data from the whole of the selected column or columns of each text file into one single spread sheet and import it to different columns
I have found this:

Dim delim As String, n As Long, b(), flg As Boolean, x, t As Integer

I have 10 rows and 3 columns or words(data). What I am trying to do is export this data one row at a time so that I end up with 10 text files. Each row needs to be inserted into 3 variables within my text file. (Variable1,Variable2,Variable3) and then saved. Each saved text file needs to be named Variable1-Variable2-Variable3.txt. End result should have 10 text files that are named corrosponding to each row of data and each text file should also have the 3 variables replaced with the corrosponding row data.
Right now I have to manually rename the text file (Variable1-Variable2-Variable3.txt) and then manually open the text file and select EDIT-REPLACE and insert the data 3 times. I have to do this for many many text files and it is becoming monotinous.
