VBA Setting Variables To Nothing Or Null

Mar 6, 2012

I've been looking at code a lot here and at the end I always see people ending their VBA code by setting the variables to nothing. Why is this done? Don't all the variables in the sub automatically get trashed when the sub ends?

So what would be the difference of me doing:

Code:
Sub emailUser(strSubject As String, strMessage As String)
'Allows you to email the user if an error occurs instead of giving a messagebox
'and stopping everything. This way if something can not be checked out, you know
'what happened and can redo it the next morning (or fix the error if need be)

Dim olApp As Object 'Outlook.Application
Dim Msg As Object 'Outlook.MailItem

[Code] .....

vs

Sub emailUser(strSubject As String, strMessage As String)

Setting Correct Variables?

Oct 24, 2013

I have put together the below macro to take data from an Excel spreadsheet and place in a word documents (using bookmarks.

What should happen is it should open up the correct word template depending on what data is in column E (Servicecode) and fill in the bookmarks with the data from excel.

It all works fine and goes through the loop and saves, inputting the correct data into the bookmarks but after looking at the saved templates and scrolling through using F8 the IF ELSE does not seem to work. It CALLS theBearSSR macro rather than the relevant macro e.g. word in E2 is Cele, the macro should call the CeleSSR macro (which opens the correct template).

I don't think i have declared my DIM Servicecode correctly... I can't seem to figure out how to make the IF ELSE condition look at the Servicecode and then go to the correct sub routine (the difference between them is the template that is opened).

HTML Code:
Sub Celebration()

Dim departuredate As String[code]......

Locating Important Columns In A Table Of Raw Data - Setting Variables Using A Loop

Feb 22, 2012

I need to be able to locate some important columns in a table of raw data (the column locations are not fixed).

I would like to identify the locations (based on the heading values in Row 1) and store them as Public variables. The Match function works fine for this, however I'd like to make a simple loop to set these variables (opposed to repeating the function for each).

In the example below, I can't figure out how to reference "List1(Count)" as the name of the variable I'm trying to set.

Code:

Public Field1 As Long, Field2 As Long, Field3 As Long 'The column numbers will be stored here
Sub FindFields()
Dim List1(3), List2(3)
Dim Count As Long
'Public variables (declared above)

[Code] ......

So after running FindFields(), the Test1() macro should give "1 - 2 - 3" (for example) as the locations of the fields in Sheet1. But currently this doesn't work.

Setting Repeating Pages In A Worksheet?

Aug 16, 2014

I need to prepare count sheets for stock take on my company and I have a long list for data with hundreds of locations. What my colleagues have been doing is to filter the locations 1 by 1 and clicking print because we want the page numbering to be 'page 1 of 3', page 2 of 3 etc. for each location.

For example

Location a has 2 pages we want it to be page 1 of 2, page 2 of 2

Location b has 1 page we want it to be page 1 of 1

This is so that we can detect if any count sheets have gone missing.

I want to be able to print everything at 1 go, without filtering the locations manually and clicking print as it takes hours to do so.

Is there anyway I can do it? I have some knowledge on excel but not macros.

Setting Up Search Page In Worksheet On Document

May 21, 2014

I am trying to setup a search page in a worksheet on a document. I want to be able to search by an indicator (DID#), but there maybe multiples of the same (DID#) in the data. I want to be able to have each instance of the multiples displayed on the search page. In addition, I want to reference other data that matches that (DID#) in separate cells.

Please see below, I want to have a search area that I can input the DID# and have a return of the corresponding info for that row. If I search "123" there are 2 entries and will need both displayed. The data is much bigger, but this is just a sample.

Run-Time Error Setting Worksheet Variable

Aug 30, 2007

The user is asked for one piece of information "Enter the ID Number.

What the macro should do then is go to Wks1 find the ID Number and change some cells as a result. This bit works.

Set Wks2 = Worksheets(strWks)

7 rows from the bottom.

My intention was to capture the the name of another worksheet which is held on the same row as the ID Number on Wks1 and call it strWks.

Then further down the macro set the value of Wks2 to that of strWks so that the macro will then go to that sheet and remove data from the row with the same ID Number.

I get a Time Run Error 9.

It just seems to be the bit at the bottom where I am trying to identify Wks2 using strWks.

Sub Macro01C_Auto_Resign()
Dim Wks1 As Worksheet, Wks2 As Worksheet
Dim strFind As String, rngFound As Range
Dim lngRow As Long, rngUnion As Range, strWks As String ............................

Using Solver With Variables In VBA Without Interacting With Worksheet

Feb 3, 2014

I am trying to create an array in VBA with a loop, where new variables are assigned each time the loop starts. These variables are then used in calculations and the final answer found by using Solver. I have managed to get this working by setting specific cell references, but I want to do it without interacting with the sheet and populate and array.

I am not sure how to use the variable, eg. x in the place of the SetCell:=Range("A1") part.

So to put it clearer, I want to substitute the Range references with variables x and y from my VBA variables, without interacting with the worksheet to get values.

Assigning Variables To Worksheet Names VBA

Jun 6, 2014

How to assign a "WS(i)" worksheet name and have the assigned variable (i) in the name equal the consecutive steps in a total page count.

Here's the code that does not work:

Code:
Dim WB as Workbook
Dim WS as Worksheet

Set WB = ThisWorkbook
For i = 1 To WB.Sheets.Count
Set WS(i) = WB.Sheets(i)
Next

I can see why it does not work. I can't figure out what to declare in my Dim or how to word the statement using the (i) variable in order to capture the value to attach to "WS."

Details: The issue is that the number of pages created will vary day to day depending on staff needs. There's an array of staff names to be assigned to page tabs and there will be skips and deletions along the way depending on daily attendance so "WS(i)" worksheet names can't be assigned at creation. What happens if they are is that the succession of worksheet names winds up being (e.g.) "WS1, WS2, WS5, WS12," etc. instead of consecutive.

There's a very complex data-sort-and-assign system that depends upon how many staff-assigned sheets there are, and as such each sheet has to have a "WS" worksheet name for the process to stay smooth. If the names are not consecutive, though, the sort-and-assign process becomes confused. This step takes place at the end of the initial workbook set up process, immediately before the data are addressed, so there really isn't an earlier opportunity. It can't be later since from this point on the system depends upon the "WS(i)" names being there.

It started fine when there were 5 people. Now there are 37.

Worksheet Calculate() And Static Variables

Apr 24, 2006

I have a spreadsheet with a real-time data link in cell A1 and I use Worksheet Calculate() to paste the new value, on any update,below cell A1. Once I have 10 values from A2 down to A11, I over-write the first one, so that I have the 10 most recent. From this I calculate the moving average.

Anyway, I would like to be able to do this without the pasting bit ie storing the most recent ten data points in a variable say x(i) and just averaging x(1) to x(10).

I'm guessing I need to use some kind of static variable or array, but I don't really know how to do this.

Function Back Variables: Function Give Two Or More Output Variables

Jul 27, 2006

Can a Function give two or more output variables. e.g.

Sub a()
x = 5
result = Y(x)
End Sub

Function Y (x As Integer) As Integer

B = ... * x
Y = ... * B

this will give back Y as a result. But if I want to get 2 or more output variables (let's say I need to get also B into sub) from one function, how should I do that?
I need this because function works with large matrix and I want to extract some values appeared in between.

Defining Variables Using Variables

Setting Up Input Box

Jun 21, 2009

What I want to be able to do is set up a thing that when you're in the excel sheet you click on it. Up comes a box where you can enter data and when you click submit. It puts that data back into excel spreadsheet. I have attached a spreadsheet to show what I mean. I have deleted some stuff that are unnecessary so don't worry about them.

What I need is for you to click a button that will create a new row/copy into the next row, from A9-AH9. Then the button will automatically bring up a box that will ask for Time, Timber, Clay, Iron, Warehouse, Hiding Place and then will enter that data into there respective cells which would be D20, F20, I20, L20, O20, Q20 respectively. That is the main idea. maybe it would be better to have te button come up with a box asking for the information and then will create the row and insert the data. If it's easier you can just do the box with just time or something so it's easier. I can then do the rest.

Tyvm. This to me seems really complicated so not sure how you would do this at all. i've looked at other stuff on the internet but haven't gotten anywhere.

P.S. If you have a more generic thing similar to this then show me the code for that or upload it and I can change it too suite my needs.
