Solver Fails In XP- An Unexpected Internal Error Occurred

Aug 5, 2003

I have a little spreadsheet aplication which ran perfectly in Office 97, but since the move to Windows/Office XP, I get the message:

Solver: An unexpected internal error occurred, or available memory was exhausted.

I'm running a P4 2.26GHz with 512MB RAM.

My code is as follows:

Solver: An Expected Internal Error Occurred, Or Available Memory Was Exhausted

Dec 29, 2006

I have a macro that does a solver routine. I have another macro that runs this solver, then copies and pastes new inputs, then runs the solver, then copies the results and pastes them somewhere, then copies new inputs, etc. It is a long process and it worked fine a few days ago. Now when I run it, about 90% of the way through and then excel crashes. The error says:

Solver: An expected internal error occurred, or available memory was exhausted.

What can I do?

Excel 2013 :: Automation Error Exception Occurred?

Mar 25, 2014

why a macro that works without a problem in Excel 2010 now crashes Excel 2013. The error produced says 'Automation Error Exception Occurred'. If I place a stop in the code and hold the F8 key down, the code runs perfectly (Excel 2013) but if I run it, it will crash. The code is copying a worksheet into a new workbook, adding 2 more worksheets, saving then emailing the workbook before closing. It goes through the routine about 7 times before crashing (sending only 7 email out). It's something to do with the email because I can bypass that code and it runs that part without a problem.

Our office just upgraded all the computers to Office 2013 and I've got to get this macro running again. I had to email 100 reports one-by-one today and I didn't like it.

Simple Formula Using IF And SUM - Yields Unexpected Error

Apr 25, 2014

Using this formula for a bank account,

=IF(SUM(C2-A1+B1)=C1, "match", "NO match")

down a column of about 3000 rows, yields only one cell with an unexpected and probably incorrect response in G2 with a "NO Match" - where the math is correct ?

A B C D
63.58 0.00 -54.97 match
64.57 0.00 8.61 NO match
128.21 0.0073.18 match
201.39

Details:

Attachment is included;
temp2.xlsx

in a bank account file, where "C2" is the previous balance, "C1" is the current balance, "A1" is any check written, "B1" is any deposit applied.

Unexpected Run Time Error 1004 In Macro

The only problem is every time this macro is running I get the run time error 1004, Method 'SaveAs' of object '_Workbook' failed. After clicking End in the error window it opens up a newly created sheet that I need. I don't need to save the file in the desktop, I need it just to open up like it does right now.

False If Result Yields Unexpected Error

May 27, 2007

If I create a simple conditional statement in a cell:

=IF(A8="NX-QSNT",B8, "")

I get the expected B8 cell contents when "NX-QSNT" exists in A8, or blank when it doesn't.

If instead of qualifying this full string, I try to Search for the "-QS" string in that cell as the criteria:

=IF(SEARCH("-QS",A8),B8, "")

I get the expected B8 cell contents when "NX-QSNT" exists in A8, but I get "#VALUE!" if it does not find this "-QS" string.

I'm guessing it may be because SEARCH isn't actually returning a TRUE/FALSE response, but rather, a numeric one based on the position of "-QS". I tried using a numeric approach also, but this didn't help:

=IF(SEARCH("-QS",A8) > 0,B8, "")

Solver Rounding Error

Nov 27, 2009

I am using Excel's solver to work out an integer problem. Although the answers are indeed integers, the number in the formula bar is not. For example: although 7 is the answer, the formula bar give 6.99987584. Even if I try to format the cell for 0 decimal places, it does not correct.

This is leading to calculations down the line.

Show Custom Error Message If Opening Workbook Macro Code Fails

May 17, 2008

I cannot figure out how to get my error handler to work, or actually, not work. It seems to work fine when there is an error, but the code still gets read even when there was not an error. Basically, I am trying to open a file, which may or may not be there. When it is not there I want a message to pop up informing the user. However, when the file is there and it opens, the error handler still gives the message box. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Application. ScreenUpdating = False
Dim LCSfile As String
LCSfile = frmSelectFile.Listbox1.Value
On Error Goto ErrHandler
Workbooks.Open Filename:=sPath & sDate & "" & LCSfile & "QUANT.CSV"
ErrHandler:
MsgBox ("File is not quantitated. Please select another file.")
Application.ScreenUpdating = True

End Sub

Excel 2010 :: Macro To Send Email Now Fails With Runtime Error 1004 - Mail System Failure

Aug 23, 2012

I've been using a macro successfully for the last couple of years, but this morning when I went to use it, it decided to fail. I have a workbook which contains various spreadsheets. The macro that has failed performs the following tasks:

1. It copies a list of email addresss from an external workbook to a sheet in the current workbook (still works)
2. It copies the referral sheet I want to send to a new file, and saves it with an appropriate filename to an appropriate folder (still works)
3. The macro then creates an email with a standard subject line, attaches the new worksheet and emails it to each of the addresses as above (broken)

The error message is from Microsoft Visual Basic. "Run-time error '1004': Mail system failure. Check your mail installation."

I'm guessing there is a setting somewhere in Excel that has changed as part of an update.

I've been through a number of the options in the developer menu to remove any obvious restrictions (& reopened excel afterwards), but so far it hasn't resolved the problem.

For what it's worth, here is the macro code.

With Application
.EnableEvents = False
.ScreenUpdating = False
End With
Run "PullInSheet1"
Dim oldbook As String

[Code] .......

In case you're wondering about the pullinsheet code, I'll add it below - but I probably grabbed it from this forum a couple of years ago (like some of the above) & just made some changes.

Code:
Sub PullInSheet1()
Dim AreaAddress As String
'''''' Sheet11.UsedRange.Clear
Dim ClRange As String
ClRange = "= 'L:ADMINEMPLOY SERVICES" _

[Code] ........

There are a couple of things I've wanted to do to improve the macro, but I couldn't justify the need to spend time working it out (since writing spreadsheets isn't really my job). Since it's broken at the moment, I can...

1. I'd like to create a subject line that reflects the name of the person being referred. For some reason though, anything other than text in the cell reference caused an error for me. eg, I tried using concatenate to create my subject line, but it didn't work.

2. I'd like the copied sheet to contain all of the formatting of the original sheet. Presumably there is a paste option that will do this and I just picked the wrong one.

The mailsystem we use is Groupwise 8. I couldn't find any settings in that program that have been changed, or that I could change.

I should change the extension from xls to xlsx in the code since I'm using Excel 2010 (but changing it doesn't fix the problem).

Multiple Solver Constraints In Solver

Sep 10, 2006

I have a cell, D5, which is the sum of three other cells, A5 B5 and C5. (all currently empty). Cells A1 through C4 are filled with various numbers.

What I've been trying to do is use solver to say: Make D5 equal 200, do it by manipulating only A5 B5 and C5, and make it subject to the constraint that A5 must equal a value selected from A1:A4, and B5 must equal a value from B1:B4, and C5 ...etc. I have deliberately set it up so that there is only one solution.

I was doing fine until trying to create the constraints. How can I make a constraint that says "this cell" must equal "one of the following cells"? And if I can't do that, is there an alternate method of achieving the same result?

Solver Solver To Calculate Through VBA

Jan 12, 2007

I have to use use the solver to calculate something (a mean-variance framework).

I am using the solver to minimize a cartain cell (variance) by making two cells equal through (expected return) by varying 10 cells( weights of assets), but I have to repeat this for 500+ times (for different expected returns).

Someone told me that I could best use some sort of loop through VBA. But I don't have a clue how that works.

External References That Should Be Internal

Mar 1, 2007

I update files monthly and save them each month with a new name (eg. Jan, Feb, etc.).

In the file I have a reference from one tab to another tab within the same file. So every time I re-save this file with a new name, it should still reference the cell in the other tab - same file.

BUT on 2 occasions this reference changed to an "external" reference to the previous month's file.

I've been doing this every month for over 2 years and this problem has only happened 2 times. I know others that have experienced this, but nobody knows what caused it.

Does anyone know what would cause this? The biggest problem is that I may not notice this has happened for a long time.

One other thing I might add. I use an older version of Excel (2000). I share these files with other people who may have newer versions (I'm not sure who has what). Can sharing these files with others over a network system have something to do with this? Can opening "read only" when someone else is in the file and then saving as a copy do this?

Macro To Check Internal Ips

May 26, 2008

we have a network of small routers and wifi aps. The Ip range has got a bit out of control so I would like to be able to audit it every once and a while.

how I could go through a set of IPs on a spreadsheet, open a telnet session or whatever, try pinging each ip individually, paste a response or no response in the adjacent column then move to the next ip in the first column (some sort of loop).

Time is not too much of an issue as I could run this overnight if need be.

As a response, the macro could just copy the last line of the ping eg

Minimum = 7ms, Maximum = 9ms, Average = 7ms
if it responds

or

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)

if it does not respond

Example

Col1 col 2
Ip
1.2.3.4 Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)

4.5.6.7 Minimum = 7ms, Maximum = 9ms, Average = 7ms

5.6.7.8 Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)

6.7.8.9 Minimum = 3ms, Maximum = 21ms, Average = 9ms

etc

Unexpected Result Using STDEV

Jul 21, 2009

I'm using the following formula to calculate the % relative standard deviation of 5 values:

ROUND((STDEV(C8:C12)/AVERAGE(C8:C12)*100),6)

where C8 through C12 are all 3.48.

I was surprised to see the result of 0.000002, and not 0.000000. This formula seems to be accurate to 6 decimal places when using 5 values that are not all the same. When they are the same, I get this small discrepancy in the 6th decimal place. I attempted to troubleshoot by inspecting C8 through C12. The values were typed in as seen above (3.48) and the cell formatting is set to 2 decimals in each of these cells, so the cells themselves shouldn't be contributing to the issue.

TextBox Setfocus Unexpected Call

Jan 31, 2010

I've got a user form with 12 textbox, one for each month a total textbox number 13 and a 14th text box (TB28) to enter $'s in.

AfterUpdate in each textbox 1-12 posts its value to a worksheet all values are summed in a =sum range which in turn populates textbox 13. When TB13.text = 100.00 it sucessfully calls a number of routines but what I can't get it to do is set focus on TB28.

Private Sub TextBox13_Change()
If TextBox13.Text = "100.00" Then
With FormPhasedAmt.TextBox28
.SelStart = 0
.SelLength = Len(TextBox28.Text)
.SetFocus
End With
End If
End Sub

It returns a Run time error Unexpected call to method or property access highlighting .SetFocus. The rest of the code works OK. Is it because other textbox on the same user form have text highlighted because of the tab order?

Find Method Unexpected Result

Apr 18, 2006

I am using the find method to search column headings, and based on the results copy the column to another worksheet. Everything works fine except if I have a mixed text and numeric string in the cell, for example DT35. In this case the macro doesn't copy this column. I have attached the spreadsheet. CTRL - A will run the macro. The macro calls a form with checkboxes, captioned using the values in the worksheet titled "Set-Up". If a value is found in the column heading the checkbox is set to true, then when the "Copy Selected Columns to Final Sheet" button is selected the columns are copied to the "FinalSheet" worksheet. I tried using xlPart instead of xlWhole, and this works but I need to search for exact strings so xlPart isn't a great work around.
