Using A Formula As The Reference In An Offset Function
Sep 2, 2008
Is there any way to use a formula rather than a direct cell reference in the Reference argument of an Offset function?
For example, rather than this:
=OFFSET(H3,0,-7,1,1)
I want to do this:
=OFFSET(max(H:H),0,-7,1,1)
Effectively replacing the starting cell of the offset function with a dynamic formula that returns the maximum value of an array.

i have 2 worksheets. one with portfolio stock data, and a second that i would like to use for dynamic charting. the chart worksheet has a drop down menu that chages a refernce cell to a number corresponding to the collumn in the portfolio worksheet for the chosen ticker
i would like to make a dynamic chart that updates the data ranges based on something like this: ....

I have following formula that returns #value!
=IF(OR(OFFSET(LIVE_JNL,ROW(5:5),COLUMN(C:D))="",OFFSET(LIVE_JNL,ROW(5:5),
COLUMN(C:D))=0,""),OFFSET(LIVE_JNL,ROW(5:5),COLUMN(C:D)))
Where the value in the cell which is referenced is either blank or zero then blank must be returned, otherwise the value which is being referenced by the offset formula.

I am having some difficulties using a combination of IF and the OFFSET function to display a range of cell values from another column based on a simple condition. The values I need to display at the destination cells should be offset by 8 columns to the right and "X" rows down from the reference column. The value "X" is to be determined via the IF function to check for the row index number.
For example, if Index value "X" = 8, then display the value of B2 in cell I9. IF X = "9", display B2 in cell I10 etc.
I have attached a sample worksheet that provides some examples.

I have a workbook with a Summary sheet and then a series of sheets for each month/year. Onthe summary sheet I use column A for the month/year as a date formatted "mmm yy" ie the same as the sheet names.
in columns B,C,D I want formulae that sums or averages a fixed range on each sheet but I would like the formula to take the sheet name from Columa A rather than hard coding it.
So that in the example =SUM('Dec 04'!$C$6:$C$47) I want to take the "Dec 04" from the text in cell A3

is there a formula that would have as it's output the cell address of the
same cell where the formula has been entered.
e.g. In cell A10 I input a formula whose output is the cell reference A10.

I will show with an example of what I would like to do. I italized and underscored the part of the formula.
---A----B
1 24 formulaB
formulaB = "= CELL("contents",DifferentSheet!G(A1))"
I want B1 to contain the value from the cell G24 in sheet "DifferentSheet". I want to use the value in A1 to determine what row on "DifferentSheet" I should use.

I am trying to do a "getpivotdata" formula on a cell in certain file that gets info from a pivot table on another file. However the name of the second file (the one where the pivot table is found on) might be different each time so I created a variable for the second file name but I can’t figure out a way to use this variable in the get pivot data formula as I am not very experience with VBA.
Template = Application.InputBox("What is the name of the file ending with (.xls)")
If Template = False Then
cont1 = MsgBox("Please write the name correctly using (.xls)!", vbOKOnly)
If cont1 = vbOK Then
Exit Sub
End If
End If

I have a table of consolidated data that consists of the date at which certain payments occur and their amounts that other sheets need to reference to perform calculations. I am currently using the formula below to put the data under the correct date column. =INDEX(ImportedData!$B$10:$DB$10,MATCH(B3,ImportedData!$B$4:$DB$4,FALSE)). The problem that I have is that the INDEX range, currently B10:DB10, will need to change depending on the number of files that are consolidated ie with more files the row will increase.

I have problem with a spreadsheet that I am trying to create.
I have a large sheet of data which is dumped in from another program. This contains our deliveries and orders etc.
Now for planning purposes, I would like to see how much of each item I have on order.
I can use VLOOKUP, but that will only give me the amount for the first order it encounters. But not the 3rd, 4th etc. I could use SUMIF but I need the dates as well. After doing some searching I think I have found a way of doing this: I can get the first easier enough:
=VLOOKUP(D$11,'purchase order'!$A$1:$K$6000,5,FALSE), this gives the first order than the another =VLOOKUP(D11,'purchase order'!$A$1:$K$6000,11,FALSE) for its date.
For the second column to check any other orders I thought I could find the cell referance for the first SEARCH: which is
A108: ="A"&MATCH(D11,'purchase order'!A:A,0).
Is there any way of using this Reference to start a new VLOOKUP. So the Lookup Range starts at this reference?? To make things harder it is on another sheet.

Attached I have a document where I am wanting all of the individual sheet names on the Total page. Rather than having to change each formula to match the sheet name I believe there is a way to reference the sheet name column (AO) in the formula so you can drag it down to fill in the columns. I am basic with Excel and do not know how to add this indirect function into my current formulas.

In Mr Excel's Pod Cast on April 12th, he showed how to use the OFFSET function to define a range inside a SUM function. Then he had Conditional Formatting that would highlight the range that was being summed. Can anyone tell me what the formula would be inside the Conditional Formatting dialog box to get the OFFSET range to have a certain format?

Essentially i'm trying to get the max of 5 cells at a time using the 'offset' reference. Here's my erroneous code:
Dim maxCell As Range
For Each maxCell In Range("y9:y150")
If maxCell.Value "" Then
maxCell.Offset(0, 1).Formula = "=max(maxCell.offset(0,-20): maxCell.offset(-5,-20))"
'maxCell.Offset(0, 1).Formula = "=max(maxCell.Offset(-5, -22) : (0, -22))"
End If
Next maxCell
I have two slightly different lines of code here (highlighted in red), one is commented, but i've been changing both to no avail.
I only want this to be triggered when the cell to the left (maxCell) is not empty, hence I use the offset feature. I've tried to use absolute references for the max formula, but then each cell has the same answer.

Is there a way to use the offset function with a cell reference for the first reference?
I have many columns of named ranges, each representing a month of financial statement data. I want to pull up certain cell values based on the months being compared.
For instance, if the user selects "May", I want to pull only the sales data for May 2013, May 2012 and May 2011. That data is in the 311 row of the columns for each individual month.
=OFFSET(ytdmay2013,311,0,1,1)
In short, I am using a vlookup to get the ytdmay2013 based on the chosen month of May in the input section. If the user then chooses June, the lookup will return ytdjun2013. I want to link the ytdjun2013 in the offset function.

I have an income statement with the cities on top (column header) and the expenses below it. There are 5 cities for example. The last line is net profit before it changes to the next city.
New York (column header)
Wages
Lights
Net Profit
Boston
Lights
Wages
Sales
Net Profit
How do you get the row reference for Boston Net Profit without using the offset or indirect function? (doing external linking with workbook closed) The formula would find Boston first and then look for the first net profit after Boston? The small if function may work for this.

I have done a Scenario and they list the cell address (example R2C35) in the Report - the cell has the text "R2C35" in it.
I want to get the contents of a cell 2 columns to the left of Cell R2C35.
So what would I use for the Reference Cell in the Offset formula?

How can I modify the following formula to find the contents of reference cell, for example if the cell reference (G$3) is equal to 9 I want it to use 8 instead.
Code:
IF(ISERROR(INDEX(tra!$E$2:$E$1100,MATCH(G$3,tra!$C$2:$C$1100,0))),"",
INDEX(tra!$E$2:$E$1100,MATCH(G$3,tra!$C$2:$C$1100,0)))
I tried using G$3-1 but this doesn't appear to work.

I am trying to use the vlookup function together with an offset function but i am not getting it to work properly.
The situation is as follows:
I have a column E in which i use the vlookup function to find its corresponding value in B which in turn refers to a named range. However, the figure i want the function to return is 2 columns to the right and 2 rows above the value which the vlookup funtion finds in the first column.
I have though of using the offset function, but i cannot figure out how to make this work.

In row E10:Z10 I have a series of values and in row E6:Z10 I have dates associated with each of the values in row 10.
I would like to create a formula to look in E10:Z10 for the maximum value and then return the date associated with that value. For example, if the maximum value is in P10, I would like the formula to return the date in P6.
I have tried without success to use the OFFSET function as follows:
=OFFSET(MAX(E10:Z10),-4,0)

I'm trying to create a formula that would return the value of the column next to it. Looking at the below example, in a new cell I would want to be able to return the value 7 based on the fact that it is in category b.
I would think an if/offset/match function would do this but I can't seem to figure it out as it may require nesting.

a2
a3

I was wondering if there was a way to use sumif and offset to guide the summing column in the example below. Perhaps I need to add an additional column, then formulate a solution. I want to sum the daily returns for the TSX when the slope is positive (green), and sum the S&P when it is negative. Currently, on signal day, I am summing that day's return, which I don't want to do. I want to sum starting on the next day (blue). The B column switches back and forth from positive to negative, so I will summing different data periods going back 1000 days. I am summing the TSX returns and S&P returns seperately to make it easier. Currently I have in C1=(sumif(b2:b1000,">0",c2:c1000)) Same for D2.

Slope
TSX
S&P

This works perfectly. In sheet2 I have named the range I have inserted a Name(Test1) for range $A$1:$A$2(range contains only numerics) and have a list validation on cell $B$1 using the name.
