Using Dropdown List While Entering Data Via Excel Built In Form Function
Jan 19, 2013
how to add a drop down list while using the excel form for data entry.
Basically I am trying to make it easy for a non technical person to add ebay items to a spreadsheet. This sheet is them used in sixbit software to upload to ebay.
All of these items will have some constants (such as length of listing or listing type etc) but selected from a small list i.e they can ONLY be certain times or types for example . So a list is very important to make sure there are no errors but also for speed.
The sheet has a number of headings so when I select the form function in excel the box comes up with the desired entry boxes just fine but I cant get a list to select from even when I have already created a drop down list in excel sheet.

I recorded a macro to open the Form on the Data Menu. Sample Worksheet Attached. After starting the macro recorder I selected the Food table cell (located to the right on the worksheet). Then went to the Menu bar.... Data Forms... and Clicked new.... followed by close and then stopped the macro Recorder. It produced the following code.... which reflects a code error when run.
Sub McrEnterFood()
'
' McrEnterFood Macro
' Macro recorded 20/01/2010
Range("P1:U16").Select
ActiveSheet.ShowDataForm
End Sub

I'm using Microsoft Excel for Mac 2011. I'm creating a drop down box from List within Data Validation. It's only letting my create a list of 17 names. My longest list is 63 names. What do I need to do to create a list that will support that?

So, I need to figure out how to make the populated contents of a single dropdown box dependent upon the selected results in two other drop downs.
As there are ~35K lines in the sheet, creating Lists is impractical, and VBA is out due to client security settings.
My data sort order is: Region Name > Area # > Facility Name
I have a drop down to select the Region I want to work in.
The drop-down for Area # populates based on the selection from Region Name.
The hang-up is that the area numbers are 1-4 for each Region.
So, I can't simply populate another drop-down for Facility from the result from Area #, but it has to be based upon the results of both of the former results.

I am trying to create a list of customer credits for my store. I have the person's name, the date of their credit, and the amount of the credit. This list will eventually be substantial and I would like to know how I can set it up so that when I open the worksheet I can enter new names from the top of the list and have the rest of the list shift downwards. This would stop me from having to scroll to the very bottom to add new info every time.
I would like to have it set up this way so that eventually I could put a search query at the top of the page (i'm thinking of rigging something up using vlookup) so that when my employees want to access the data base they can easily search a name and have the relevant info brought up, or can easily type in new store credits.

I am very proficient at Excel/VBA and have a question about custom/user-defined functions that may be a little more advanced. I understand how to write custom functions and access them through the user-defined functions menu, but I would like to be able to include my function in an add-in that users could simply add, and then access the function via the 'Fx' box at the top of Excel, like they would any other built-in function, instead of having to go to the user-defined functions menu. I guess what I am looking for is how to add 'built-in' functions and not user-defined ones. I just want the user to start typing '=customFunction(' and have the parameters pop-up in tool-tip form, like any Excel built-in function would.

My problem is I cannot copy from a Form Control drop down box, and I need to do this for ~10 drop down boxes in about 200 xls files. The files follow a template so the drop down button Inputs are uniform. Here is some more detail:
I’m building an Access Database so that our data (currently in many, many Excel Spreadsheets) can be efficiently queried. The old system was that when asset data was collected, the data would be entered into an Excel spreadsheet, using a Template. So for example:
Project A1234
Name
Main Street Pipe
High Street Pipe
Ref No.
12345
12346
Installation date
22/08/13
19/07/12
X Coordinate
55667
99212
Y Coordinate
77889
12364
We have hundreds of these files, but I managed to get all the files in one folder and Paste and Transpose the data from the relevant Cell Ranges in each file (using a VB sub) into ONE summary sheet. Success; or so I thought.
Unfortunately for one generation of the template (people changed them slightly every year), the template had people enter information into Drop Down Menus. Not a problem when they’re associated with a cell, but these were free floating Form Controls.. so you can’t actually click and copy from them, or call them in VB as you would a specific cell.. afaik.
So my issue is how can I extract the data from those Form Buttons? I’ll try and provide as much info as I can:
Firstly I tried to find some sort of identifier for each Form Button. The dropdowns are called Combo Boxes, (Developer tab > Insert > Combo Box (Form Control) ), and when you select them (by right clicking) and hit the View Code button in Developer Tab > Controls the following shows up in VB.
Sub DropDown44_Change()
End Sub
I’m guessing that the number is related to the button so that’s one useful thing, an identifier of sorts. There’s no actual code there though really from what I can see.. My problem is I have no idea how to extract from DropDown44!
The range of values in the drop down comes from a separate sheet where there’s just a list of the values. There aren’t any cells linked to the drop downs though. If I enter a cell in (Right Click) Format Control > Cell link: then it prints the number (e.g. 4) of the value in the range. So if the drop down options are “Monday”, “Tuesday”, “Wednesday”, “Thursday” and “Thursday” is selected, the linked cell says: “4”.
They didn’t link a cell, then I could call that cell in a VB sub and the job would be done. Unfortunately they didn’t, so I tried Recording a Macro and selecting the drop down form control.. That didn’t really work, except if I right clicked it, I got some more info from the macro VB:
ActiveSheet.Shapes.Range(Array("Drop Down 19")).Select
So is my drop down an Array? My understanding of an Array is that it’s a list of arguments.. all I get there is the name of the button. I am not experienced in VB so this is as far as I’ve got. Perhaps I can get a sub to select the button using the above line, but I need the info from it, i.e. which value is currently selected in the Drop Down.
(Using Excel 2010 but the .xls files are from ~2005)

I have been writing a speadsheet using drop down lists and the Lookup function to link names to body weights. When using the dropdown list it displays for one name the incorrect weight. All the rest work correctly but one will not. From the list below when I select the name White it displays '68' rather then '80' as it should. If I change the name of White to the number 4, it will act correctly and display the weight '80'. It seems rather bizare.
This is the function that I am using
=LOOKUP(C53,Weights!B2:C9, Weights!C2:C9)
Pilot
Jones
78
Smith

I have two sheets open in Excel, the second sheet contains a huge list of data. I am trying to make a workbook that lets any user select from several dropdown lists and in the end, displays the (in this case) recommended material to use (and if possible the 4 best choices). The user will select from dropdown lists what the environment the material will be exposed to, the minimum required temp, and the maximum required temp.

I am trying to have a drop down list which is dependant on the result of a cell.
For example, if cell A1= CAT, then cell A2 should have a 'drop down list 1'; if cell A1=DOG, cell A2 would have 'drop down list 2'; if cell A1=RABBIT, cell A2 would have 'drop down list 3' etc.
Creating the drop down list is easy, I just want to know if it's possible to have different drop down lists depending on the result of a cell.

What I am trying to do is have a drop down list in one cell and have the next cell bring in the correct price for the item in the first cell. Sounds fairly easy? Well both lists are 200 items.
I have been trying to do this with just three items so far. On sheet two, I have created two lists. The first list in column A contains dogs, cats, mice. The second list in column B contains 1, 2, 3. On sheet one, I have created the drop down list for the animals in the A12 cell. I would like for B12 to auto populate the corresponding number to the animal without having to create an if formula for each animal and number.

resolving a "not responding" problem that occurs when I try to enter data into a cell in one of two columns in my spreadsheet. These columns don't seem to be linked and I can't see a way of getting at where the problem might be coming from.
Is there a tried and tested method for trouble shooting something like this?

I'm creating a spreadsheet to keep track of my costs of production in an online game. Within the game there are a range of spawned resources that appear for only a short time before being unobtainable these resources have specific types that is shared between multiple spawns of the resource but each resource spawn has a unique name.
My first worksheet lists all the resources and their various qualities and the later worksheets are meant to allow me to choose from a list resources matching the requirements of the item I'm looking to craft. The example i have shown in the second picture requires Tatooinian Fiberplast and Lokian Wild Wheat to craft so in the Chosen Resource column I would like to have a drop down list allowing me to select the named resource type i would like to use - for Tatooinian Fiberplast the only thing on the list should be Omnitwixi and for the Wild Wheat it should show Fizi and Krad

In earlier versions if I used the double clicked the autofill handle it would only fill down to the next adjacent cell containing data. Now it fills down to the bottom of all the data regardless of whether there is a blank cell or not e.g
X X X Z
X X X Z
X X X Z
X X
Now this happens
X X X Z
X X X Z
X X X Z
X X ...Z
X X X Z
How can I stop this as I need to enter different data in the next section?

I want to link a table to a form. Only, I noticed that when setting the input range in the form I'm unable to use OFFSET OR a table name. How can I link the form to a list which is going to expand?
Attached is an example. Two sheets. One for the list. One for the form. The list will keep getting added to.
Unrelated-but perhaps useful - Is it possible to link one cell to a list in another sheet so a user can type in a word and it will offer autocomplete options in excel 2007 ?

If i start typing "aut", it should the drop down entry "automation". For your information, I just use Define Name and Data Validation to create the drop down list. Is it must be using VBA code or I just can use Define Name and Data Validation which has been I created?

Using excel 2007 I've created a new tab and wanted to place the 2003 file menu on it. I don't know how to include it automatically in the tab using a combination of XML and VBA. So I created a button with the callback to run some code. Unfortunately, it still places the item in the Add-in tab. How can I get the undernoted code to operate within my new tab with either XLM or VBA?
Code:
Sub InsertFileMenu2003()
Dim cb As CommandBar
Set cb = Application.CommandBars.Add("xl2003 Menu", , True)
CommandBars("Built-in Menus").Controls("&File").Copy cb
Application.CommandBars("xl2003 Menu").Visible = True
End Sub

I was able to create a conditional format that does the following:
if any cell in C column is changed, it checks G column...if the time in G column is within two hours of the current time, it highlights in yellow A column (in that corresponding row). The formula that got this working is:
Code:
=AND(MOD(NOW(),1)>= $G1-"02:00",MOD(NOW(),1)

Anyhow, I enjoy the modern convenience of a dual-monitor setup but still find myself struggling with small forms(?) in Excel. For instance I am currently looking at the "Conditional Formatting Rules Manager" which occupies a very limited amount of screen real-estate. The sheet I am working on contains a large number of conditional formats which all use long custom formulas. I am not the original author.
I would love to be able to resize the overall size of the menu and the columns within it but, for the life of me, I can't seem to do so. It would be much easier to be able to see the rule formulas in one glance as opposed to having to go into each one to see the one-character difference. As stated before I certainly have the real-estate to do so.
p.s. I'm using Excel 2013

I click on one of the entries and the cell is "auto completed" with that entry. Sure is handy. I try to find that functionally in Excell at work, Office Professional 2010, and no bueno for kaki.

I'm trying to create a set of three dynamic/dependent drop down lists of date values, based on a set of imported data. Depending on whether the preferred choice is to list all dates in a range or just dates on the 15th, the available start and end drop down lists will change.
In addition, if possible I would then like to display a list of valid dates (not sure if this needs to be VBA).
The attached sheet shows/explains what I am attempting but here it is as well:
If B3 is set to show all dates in the month then:
the first dropdown option for C3 will be the first date of IMPORT (D2)
the first dropdown option for C4 will be the C3 value, to the last date in IMPORT (D) column
If B3 is set to show 15th of the month then:
the dropdown for C3 will be the first date of IMPORT (D) column with a date of 15th the dropdown for C4 will be in the range of C3 to the last date of IMPORT (D) column with a date of 15th only dates of 15th will be listed in both C3 and C4 dropdownlists
General
the dates in IMPORT column D are taken from IMPORT column A, B & C, which will be imported and will always be date sequential the number of rows of date entries will change with every import but there will never be any blank rows between dates the values in IMPORT columns A, B & C will always be numerical, and can be referenced if required [ideally] the LIST OF DATES will be populated with the date range, based on the option selected in B3
I'm fairly familiar with Excel (2010) and I have also done some VBA but I'm new to dynamic, nested dropdown lists and I'm unsure what the most practical way is to achieve this.
