Limitations Of VLOOKUP: Entering Data From The Long List

Feb 28, 2007

Excel 2003. When the Vlookup List becomes impractably long to select data from the cell dropdown. Is there an alternative prefered method to entering data from the long list?

Entering Data From Top / Beginning Of List

Feb 10, 2012

I am trying to create a list of customer credits for my store. I have the person's name, the date of their credit, and the amount of the credit. This list will eventually be substantial and I would like to know how I can set it up so that when I open the worksheet I can enter new names from the top of the list and have the rest of the list shift downwards. This would stop me from having to scroll to the very bottom to add new info every time.

I would like to have it set up this way so that eventually I could put a search query at the top of the page (i'm thinking of rigging something up using vlookup) so that when my employees want to access the data base they can easily search a name and have the relevant info brought up, or can easily type in new store credits.

Using Dropdown List While Entering Data Via Excel Built In Form Function

Jan 19, 2013

how to add a drop down list while using the excel form for data entry.

Basically I am trying to make it easy for a non technical person to add ebay items to a spreadsheet. This sheet is them used in sixbit software to upload to ebay.

All of these items will have some constants (such as length of listing or listing type etc) but selected from a small list i.e they can ONLY be certain times or types for example . So a list is very important to make sure there are no errors but also for speed.

The sheet has a number of headings so when I select the form function in excel the box comes up with the desired entry boxes just fine but I cant get a list to select from even when I have already created a drop down list in excel sheet.

Data Validation Limitations- Shortened Formula

Jun 14, 2007

I am trying to use the validation feature to calculate a check digit and the formula is too long to put in validation. I rewrote the formula to be shorter using math features instead of text, but apparently you can't use arrays in validation. Because of certain distribution constraints, using VBA is not possible so a UDF is out. Can either of these be shortened in anyway? I am not sure if it is even technically possible to solve this problem with these constraints.

Here is the "human readable" explanation of formula:
(Accept only 10 digit numeric value.)
Example Number: 123456789-3
Digits 1,3,5,7,9 are multiplied by 2 (weighted 5)
So 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 becomes 2,2,6,4,10,6,14,8,18Weighted 5's multiplied values then have their individual digits added (ex:12=1+2=3)
So 2,2,6,4,10,6,14,8,18 becomes 2,2,6,4,1,6,5,8,9
Weighted 5's sum is added to the sum of the Nonweighted 4 digits.
So 2,2,6,4,1,6,5,8,9,3 becomes 43
Add 24 to sum.
43+24 = 67

Checksum = (10-(67 mod 10)) mod 10
(Sum round up to 10 minus sum)

Filtering A LONG List To Entries In A Shorter List

Nov 10, 2008

I have a list of email aliases for my company, approx 10,000 entries, mapping the alias to an email address. Two columns, one the alias firstname.surname, second column being the full email address. I have a second list, a subset of these aliases, approx 1200 of them, that are users of a particular web app. All i have in this list though, is the firstname.surname bit.

What I need to do is compare the lists, and where the aliases match I need to pull out the corresponding full email address from the long list, so I have 1200 aliases in the shorter list, with the full email address mapped to it. Is this possible in excel? i've tried all sorts of LOOKUP functions, and MATCH functions, but none seem to work. MATCH will give me the corresponding row number in the long list, but then it seems to offset itself every row it goes down, so the values are 1 out for every row. First row is good, second row -1, third row -3, fourth row -4 etc.

I don't want to have to manually go through 1200 entries and match them against a 10,000-entry list. Hopefully there's a quick way in excel to filter the long list down to the entries specified in the short list?

VLOOKUP Performance Is Taking Very Long Time To Recalculate

Jan 11, 2010

I designed a spreadsheet which uses a lot of VLOOKUPs and it takes a very long time to recalculate. I don't know if there is another way I could do this, but this just seemed to make sense and it works just the way we want it but it just takes too long. Here is what the spreadsheet is designed to do:

We have data that is pasted into excel from another source. The data is broken up into account number, date, check number, and amount. Multiple payments from the same account can occur in one month so the data must be totaled. There is a custom function called concatif which works just like sum if but concatenates text. There are VLOOKUPs performed on the account number and the corresponding date, check number, and amount are inserted in the table.

Similarly read "white" from the long text "white is tired" and write "1". And so on,,,,, For more criteria, see box highlighted in yellow,,,,I used VLOOKUP but what am able to make it work only when there is one word "sam" in the lookup column. It returns #NA when the text is "sam is good". It should write nothing if none of the criteria is met and should keep doing until the last cell in the lookup column.

Fortunately, that criteria is all in one column; unfortunately, out of about 30 different entries in that column, I need it to pull 7 of them, 4 of them have been input 2 or 3 different ways.

I know I can go through the list of 900+ by hand and copy the rows, but there has to be an easier way right? Here is the list of all the spellings of the ones I need to pull..

Macro To Create A Dialog Box For Entering And Updating Drop Down List?

Trying To Write A List Of Numbers In A Cell, Keeps Converting It To A Long Number

Jan 12, 2010

I'm doing the website for my company and things have to be entered into the site via spreadsheets. I have a list of numbers

e.g. 3652, 2845, 50925, 4809, 18392

that need to have the spaces removed in order for them to work.

e.g. 3652,2845,50925,4809,18392

There are over 500 cells with multiple numbers in each, so I don't want to do it one at a time, and rightly so, because Excel keeps changing the format and giving me something like

3.6*10^30 and loses all my commas.

Is there an easier way?

Removing All But Highest Occurrence Of Version Numbers In Long List?

Feb 7, 2014

I have a list full of different IDs with different version numbers (This format: AKH123.1).

I'm trying to clean the list - removing all duplicate IDs but leaving only the largest version number.

I managed to remove the last digit using LEN/VLOOKUP and removing duplicates, but leaving only the largest version number is too tricky for me. I've thought about trying something with LARGE but can't wrap my mind around it.

My thought process went like this: I want to find all occurrences of "AKH123" and return the largest one.

The list contains about 8000 entries and this would save en enormous amount of work.

Here is a tiny portion of the list:

AKH450.1
AKH451.1
AKH451.3
AKH451.4
AKH451.5
AKH451.6
AKH451.7
AKH451.8
AKH452.1
AKH453.3
AKH454.1
AKH455.1

List The Data Relevant To Each Name In A Seperate Place Using A VLOOKUP

Mar 5, 2009

I have a list of names that I'm looking up, and I want to list the data relevant to each name in a seperate place using a VLOOKUP ,(maybe theres a better way to do it) but some of the names appear more than once, resulting in an error.

I have on the first sheet, Name, Customer, Amount and Variance.

On the seperate sheet (in the same workbook) I have then name with 4 VLOOKUPS underneath, trying to extract the data Customer, Amount and Variance. But, I get errors in all of them.

Is there anyway I can List all the data relevant to each name using a Lookup function or is there another formula I should be using?

Vlookup To Access Data Based On A Drop-down List...

Nov 14, 2008

i have been looking around here and it seems like my problem is similar to many's regarding the vlookup function. to me, what i'm trying to do sounds simple enough, but it can't get it to work. i have a table that has three columns, Item Number, Item Description, and Amount.

Each item has it's own number, a corresponding item description, and ammount (obviously), but there are some repeats. What I want to do it input the Item Description, and have one field automatically pull up the Item number, and the next field, pull up the price. I am using a drop-down list for the Item Descriptions utilizing data validation. here is formula that i have been trying to use that is not working: =VLOOKUP(B2,Sheet1!$A$2:$C$18,1,FALSE). i have attached a trial worksheet that i am using to work things out on.

Using List Of Data With Wildcards In VLookup Formula As Lookup Value?

Mar 8, 2013

I have a list of rules on how to group account numbers. An example is below. I have a very long list of full account numbers (no wildcards). There are roughly 75 rules on how to group the over 40,000 accounts. I want to use the vlookup to determine what group each full account number (always 11 characters) would belong to? It seems that the vlookup isn't treating the ?'s as wildcards. I can use the full account number rules with the wildcards in the cell in the sumif function though.

So ultimately I would like to have my list of account numbers like 40000000000 and 40000000001 know that they belong in group 1 based on the rule table below.

Full Account Number

VLOOKUP & Lists (range Called List That Has 3 Columns Of Data)

May 20, 2009

I have a range called List that has 3 columns of data:

Corporate Human Resources Services PMA
Corporate Procurement Director
Ops Central Customer Services Lost Property Office
Ops Travel Information Travel Info Call Ctr
Ops Travel Information Centres Travel Info Centres

I have 3 columns on the entry sheet called Business Unit (Col A), Department(Col B) and Sub-Department (Col C). I want to limit the choice in column B to based on the selection in Column A in the form of a drop-down list e.g choosing Corporate gives a list of Human Resources Services; Procurement.

I am using the list option for field validation and the following formula in cell B2: =INDIRECT(VLOOKUP(A2,List,2,0)). I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong as I don't get a list of options just a blank cell. Do I need to use a different formula other than VLOOKUP..?

Macro For Spotting Text From One List To Another Then Pulling In Data With Vlookup?

I have a list of active accounts with its relevant data on one sheet, then I have a list of closed/inactive accounts that will be updated periodically by different users. I would like to run a query for the accounts on the closed list to pull in relevant data from the active list,if any, or maybe just highlight the closed accounts on the active list to ensure that the closed accounts aren't active again. Is that possible with a macro? Should it just be a vlookup? The accounts list is going to be a very big file and I am trying to find a solution that won't take up too much time to run.
