Automatic Link Update WITHOUT Prompt When File Opened Not Working (XL2003)

Jul 6, 2006

Despite setting the "Edit/Links/Startup Prompt/Don't display the alert and update links" option numerous times, my workbook still prompts me to update links every time I open it. The option seems to be set okay (it is preset whenever I go into the "Edit/Links/Startup Prompt" dialog), but it doesn't seem to affect the workbook's startup behaviour. The workbook contains a ComboBox control that is initialized with customer names from another workbook, which is included in the References for this main workbook.

I am using Excel 2003 (from Office Pro 2003) under Windows XP (SP1). I believe this used to work without the prompt when I was working on this app last fall (I'm not sure, as my memory of specific behaviours back that far is fuzzy). However, it has been persistently prompting ever since I started working on this app again this spring/summer. Was there perhaps a bad fix to Office 2003 (that I automatically applied) that broke this feature?

Prompt For File On External Formula Link Entry

Feb 1, 2008

I want to be able to get a value from a specific cell in another workbook, the problem i have is that i want to be able to select what file the active workbook looks for from the start page of my current workbook. For example when i load the workbook i get my startup page ( sheet 1) where i will be able to select what external workbook the active workbook will be linking with, i will then link the active workbook to the value in a specific cell from the selected external workbook.
I know to link to another workbook i would use ='[filename]sheet!cell

However i want to be able pull up a 'open file dialog box' which i select a file name which will be used as 'filename' in the formula above.

Working On File Opened With GetOpenFile (VBA)

Jan 23, 2013

the small code i'm writing just needs to do the following:

1. open an .xslx file selected by the user
2. copy 2 worksheets from that file to the current one
3. close the selected file without saving it.

This is my code:

VB:
Sub GetData()
MsgBox ("Please select a file"), vbOKOnly
Master = Application.GetOpenFilename(FileFilter:="Excel Files (*.xlsx), *.xlsx", Title:="Please select a file")

[Code]....

Opening the file works, but the last 3 lines don't because i don't understand how to declare "Master": however i dim it (workbook, object, variant...) i get an error on the GetOpenFilename line. If i don't declare it, i get an error while trying to copy the worksheets.

Update Link With File Name In Cell

Jul 14, 2007

I'm sure this is an easy one but it's unfortunately beyond me. I have a update links formula in which I would like for it to update with the name of the file being in a cell. Example:

The file name is Week20.xls

Cell A1 has the value of Week20.xls using a formula (="Week" & A2 & ".xls")

Currently I have it by looking at the actual file location like this: ='C:Documents and SettingsMy DocumentsWeekly Sales6 Sales Comparisons[Week20.xls]Daily Comparisons'!$I$4

But rather then pointing directly to the file path I want it to update by the name of the file in A1. So I'm sure its something as simple as replacing [Week20.xls] with some formula but I don't know what that one is.

Update Link Without Open Resource File

May 31, 2006

I'm using Excel 2002.

I have one workbook with data linked to another CSV file (It's about 40000rows). When I open the workbook, "THis workbook contains one or more links that cannot be updated." message appears and asks me to open csv file if I wanna to update (although I set full path for links in cells). I wonder if there's any way to update link without opening csv file? Or Excel can not update link without openning the resource file?

Do Not Prompt User On Broken Link

Aug 7, 2009

This file pulls totals from external links. The way I have it set up is that every month our log is saved to a naming scheme involving the date, then a fresh log is created for the current month. So, for each month I have "log mm-yyyy".

Now, the chart file is a thirteen month rolling chart (meaning every month it must show the thirteen most recent month's totals). I have created a macro to automatically update the links, based on an input in cell A:1 (meaning you can enter a date in the past and view the thirteen months previous). The problem is that we have only been doing the log for 10 months. So, when the macro runs to update the links, and it gets to months 11 through 13, it pops up a window for the user to manually browse for the missing(non-existent) files. There are quite a few cells that contain links to various information on these logs. I get a prompt for each cell and have to click "cancel". Once I have clicked cancel through all of the broken links, then everything works great.

My question (after all that) is, is there a way to suppress the prompt for the user to search for the missing file? Like I said, this chart is for management, and they shouldn't have to click cancel a dozen times just o look at a chart. If the file doesn't exist, then just break the link.

Obviously once the next three months are over, this problem will disappear, but in the mean time I need a solution.

Copy Paste Causes Link Prompt

Oct 4, 2007

I have this long macro that among other things copies data from one sheet to another.

Once I finished it I moved it onto a shared drive and now when it is run I get a popup reading: "Update Values: Book3.xls" asking me to seach for a file. I think it is trying to reference this other book that was in the folder where it was origionaly written, however there is no need for it to, its just processing data within the existing workbook... Ive used Ctrl+F and searched through the formulas to find book3 and it doesn't return anything...

the popup occurs at a line that is: "activesheet.paste"

how to undo this reference to another book? is there some way to supress it from looking outside the selected book?

Update Values Prompt

Feb 12, 2013

I attempted to copy the cells (which had formulas) from one workbook worksheet into another workbook worksheet. It didn't paste properly, so I deleted it and resolved to enter the formulas I needed manually one by one. The formulas reference values in other worksheets within the same workbook. The issue is, now, for some reason when I attempt to enter the formulas, I get an "Update Values" prompt and the formulas won't reference the sheets within the same workbook anymore. Is there a way to stop this prompt from appearing? and unlink the workbooks?

Update Links Without Prompt

Mar 18, 2008

I'm using code which forces users to enable macros prior to being allowed into a file. Then I ran into an issue of needing this Shared Workbook to update links, which you can't do in the workbook_open event and I do not want users prompted to update or not. So what I've done is made a 'skeleton' file to force the macro enable and then open up the real file with updated links. Once the real file is opened I want that skeleton file to close. For some reason, once the file closes the code halts. "Forcemacroenablemaster" closes, but nothing runs after it. If I comment the close line out everything after runs. This code is in my "Forcemacroenable" file:

Private Sub Workbook_Open()
Call ShowAllSheets
Workbooks("Forcemacroenablemaster.xls").Close False
MsgBox "Test"

Call ValidSetup
frmCtrlPnl.Show
End Sub

CountIf - Automatically Update Once Opened

Oct 18, 2008

I have made a league table which pulls data from another table - in this example. The actual one i am using pulls data from a different workbook. Any way...In one of my columns i am using the countif formula to count how may times an advisor's name appears. Eg - =COUNTIF(A:A,"Sally A").

Is there another formula i can use to carry out this function. The reason i am asking this is there are multiple links in my league table to the other workbook. Once i open my league table all the data is updated - as the other workbook data is changed. However, for this to work i need to open up the other workbook where the data is , otherwise i will get the VALUE# error. I do not want to open the other workbook just to pull the data over, i need this league to automatically update once opened.

VBA For Bypassing Replace File Prompt When Saving As A File In Macro

Jul 7, 2008

I am setting up a "save as" macro that saves a file by replacing another file in a folder. Even though the macro has been recorded by approving the replacement (the prompt appears "the file --- already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?"), when I run the macro, I am again prompted about replacing the file. Is it possible to avoid the prompt so the file is automatically saved by replacing the named file?

Create Automatic Link To Files In Same Folder

Apr 28, 2009

I have two files,

1. Form Templete & 2. Student Data Index. (Both files will be placed in same folder)

About Form Templete : This is a simple form, containing some fields. Fields which i require are Form No., Student's name & Standard.

About Student Data Index : This file is to maintain records.
Each time when I fill form for a new student i will copy paste the form templete file & rename it by form no. (Entered in the Form Templete file, Form No. field)

My question is : Is it possible that whenever i create a new file in the same folder with student's name the required fields in the Student data Index get filled automatically, apart from that the new file created get hyperlinked & when i click on form no. the form for that student gets open?

Automatic Refresh / Update

Mar 25, 2013

I have 2 excel tables that are frequently edited on a laptop and saved to a Dropbox folder. What I would like to do is have a second computer that will have these tables open and constantly updates (periodically or when changes are made). This computer and monitor will serve as a display in a common area (think of it kind of like a flight tracker).

What I have tried: I have tried to enable the Shared Workbook with a refresh of 5 minutes but the display computer is not showing the changes. I would like to make it refresh every minute if a periodic refresh is possible.

Note: It is my understanding that if you reopen the file, the data will update so maybe there is a way to have the file reopen every few minutes? I was able to successfully test this method; If I am able to automate this process without the two excel sheets changing the window positions (using a Workspace file perhaps) it would be perfect.

Automatic Update Of Workbook

Jan 13, 2012

What I'd like to have is one workbook, that 2 people can open and both people will see all changes that happen to the workbook.

As an example, there would be a Player 1 sheet and a Player 2 sheet. When you open the workbook you choose which Player you are and then it defaults to your sheet. You can then place your ships and start the game.

Each player would take it in turns to guess a square on the opponents board and then this selection would be sent to the other players sheet and updated automatically.

Most of it I think is quite easy to do - the only tough part being the updating process. Could I do it as 2 workbooks one for each player, (password protected to stop cheating!) and then when a move is made both workbooks are closed, the change is made and saved and the workbooks are re-opened?

Automatic Monthly Update

Each tab is for a month in 2007. The main tab is formated to show a recap of each month. So when the Janruary tab has been completed the main recap page should pull data from its tab. Then once the february tab has been completed the main recap tab should now show the data from this tab, and so on and so on.

I am currently updating the data manually by refrencing the new tab in the main tab formulas. I hope there is an easier way for me to get this data without manually inputing formulas every month.
