Prompt For File On External Formula Link Entry

Feb 1, 2008

I want to be able to get a value from a specific cell in another workbook, the problem i have is that i want to be able to select what file the active workbook looks for from the start page of my current workbook. For example when i load the workbook i get my startup page ( sheet 1) where i will be able to select what external workbook the active workbook will be linking with, i will then link the active workbook to the value in a specific cell from the selected external workbook.
I know to link to another workbook i would use ='[filename]sheet!cell

However i want to be able pull up a 'open file dialog box' which i select a file name which will be used as 'filename' in the formula above.

Automatic Link Update WITHOUT Prompt When File Opened Not Working (XL2003)

Jul 6, 2006

Despite setting the "Edit/Links/Startup Prompt/Don't display the alert and update links" option numerous times, my workbook still prompts me to update links every time I open it. The option seems to be set okay (it is preset whenever I go into the "Edit/Links/Startup Prompt" dialog), but it doesn't seem to affect the workbook's startup behaviour. The workbook contains a ComboBox control that is initialized with customer names from another workbook, which is included in the References for this main workbook.

I am using Excel 2003 (from Office Pro 2003) under Windows XP (SP1). I believe this used to work without the prompt when I was working on this app last fall (I'm not sure, as my memory of specific behaviours back that far is fuzzy). However, it has been persistently prompting ever since I started working on this app again this spring/summer. Was there perhaps a bad fix to Office 2003 (that I automatically applied) that broke this feature?

How To Break External Reference Link Without Converting Formula To Value Within Sheet

Jul 1, 2013

I have a formula in a cell which is refered to other cell within the same sheet and also to other sheet from other file. say

C1 = A1+B1+data file c1 Data file is another file in other location.

I was trying to break a external reference link (from Data File) from Data _ Edit Link, but it is converting all the formula to value. How is it possible to break only the external link without damaging the formula within the sheet say c1 = A1+B1+26 (value from data file c1)

Formula To External File, Requires File To Be Open

Jun 12, 2006

I've got a couple of formulas in a workbook which lookup values in another workbook. When I reopen the initial workbook the formulas results come back as errors (i.e. #VALUE!) unless the workbook it is looking at is also open. This is not desirable, does anyway know how I can lookup values in another workbook which are not open? The formula which is causing me problems is as follows:

= SUMIF( 'H:Infozoom[2006-01_assy.xls]New Table1'!$F:$F,$A8,'H:Infozoom[2006-01_assy.xls]New Table1'!$AH:$AH)/60

Suppress Open File Prompt When Copying Over Formula Referencing Closed Workbooks?

Dec 13, 2013

I have an Excel file that contains formulas that reference external workbooks on a shared network. Each month, I copy the column of formulas over to the next month's column. Then, to update the file path, I highlight the new column and do a Find-and-Replace, swapping the previous month's name for the current month. This practice works fine. The only thing is ... the "Open File" promptbox appears for each formula where I updated the file path (i.e. and this can be hundreds instances!). I wind-up having to choose the file from the exact same file path. It is an unnecessary, and annoying extra step to take.

Do Not Prompt User On Broken Link

Aug 7, 2009

This file pulls totals from external links. The way I have it set up is that every month our log is saved to a naming scheme involving the date, then a fresh log is created for the current month. So, for each month I have "log mm-yyyy".

Now, the chart file is a thirteen month rolling chart (meaning every month it must show the thirteen most recent month's totals). I have created a macro to automatically update the links, based on an input in cell A:1 (meaning you can enter a date in the past and view the thirteen months previous). The problem is that we have only been doing the log for 10 months. So, when the macro runs to update the links, and it gets to months 11 through 13, it pops up a window for the user to manually browse for the missing(non-existent) files. There are quite a few cells that contain links to various information on these logs. I get a prompt for each cell and have to click "cancel". Once I have clicked cancel through all of the broken links, then everything works great.

My question (after all that) is, is there a way to suppress the prompt for the user to search for the missing file? Like I said, this chart is for management, and they shouldn't have to click cancel a dozen times just o look at a chart. If the file doesn't exist, then just break the link.

Obviously once the next three months are over, this problem will disappear, but in the mean time I need a solution.

Copy Paste Causes Link Prompt

Oct 4, 2007

I have this long macro that among other things copies data from one sheet to another.

Once I finished it I moved it onto a shared drive and now when it is run I get a popup reading: "Update Values: Book3.xls" asking me to seach for a file. I think it is trying to reference this other book that was in the folder where it was origionaly written, however there is no need for it to, its just processing data within the existing workbook... Ive used Ctrl+F and searched through the formulas to find book3 and it doesn't return anything...

the popup occurs at a line that is: "activesheet.paste"

how to undo this reference to another book? is there some way to supress it from looking outside the selected book?

Cannot Find Link To External Workbook

Jul 31, 2014

I have a document (unfortunately I cannot attach it) in Excel 365 that each time I open it I get the usual prompt that it is calling an external link. As much as i'd love to hide the popup I need to find the link to solve to problem but I'm at a loss.

Simply breaking the links doesn't work for some reason, so I've tried updating the source to reflect the current file. No luck there.

I've searched the workbook for the name of the link in question, searching for all formula for name itself as well as variants of "[" and ".xlms".

I don't see anything in the name manager referencing that external file.

I don't recall if I copied from that particular document, I may have as it was a duplicate file. I tried looking over the cells I believe I copied from it but didn't see the reference.

I've installed Kutools and Bill Manville (MS MVP) FindLink Tool. Both of which says there is no external link.

I've looked at the compatibility checker which basically just says, yes there is an external link but give no insight on how to address.

I've tried a couple of macros, some of which crashed excel, some of which simply said that there was an external link but not how to find it. In my frustration I forgot which one that was but I'm about to try that approach again and look for that code.

Link Formula To File Based On Cell Value

I have a problem that may be a little bit diff. from must of the Readonly post that I have found here. Most people would like to have all of there files opened as readonly files, but I don't in this case. I am copying a number of files that has VBA code in just about all of them. I am using a CD writer to copy the files to a CD using Windows Explorer and that is working just great, No problem copying the files.

My problems comes in when I copy the files from the CD to another computer, all of the files are Readonly files on the new PC. I have not saved them as readonly and don't want them to be readonly files. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening what I need to check or change to get the files to another computer without being a readonly file.

Link To External Workbook From Cell Reference

Nov 24, 2011

I've got a field where I enter the current month, from this I derive a file path which is stored in A4.

ie: A1 = '01/11/2011' (UK Date format)

A4 = '\myserverdirectory20111111MyFile.xls'

What I'm trying to achieve is to then have a link in cell A6 that will link to the file in A4. I can specify my cell reference as this will never change, just the file path.

So, if I changed A1 to '01/12/2011' my A4 changes to '\myserverdirectory20111211MyFile.xls'

I'm trying to set A6 to something like ="&$A$A4&"!B1 to get the value of B1 on my referenced sheet.

External Workbook Link With Dynamic Cell Reference

In other words, I want everything in the external reference formula to remain the same except have the person's name change dynamically...

Import External Data. Update Link For New Database

Dec 12, 2006

In an Excel sheet i have set up a link to an Access database query (select query) using the Import External Data method. The data is store sales by week, arranged in a pivot table layout (stores as rows, weeks as columns). As time goes by, the database will be updated for new weeks sales, and i would like to refresh the data and the new weeks automatically appear in the Excel sheet, in subsequent columns.

At the moment, the only way i can seem to get this to work is to open up the link in MSQuery and manually select the new weeks from the Access query. i have set the parameters to overwrite cells with new data rather than insert new data. i'm sure there is a way to do this, as it feels like it would be a common thing to want, but i can't seem to find an answer anywhere!

Link To External Source Workbook For Data Validation Lookup Values Returns Zeros

Mar 25, 2014

Say I have Source Workbook X 1, and Destination Workbooks X 4. The Source workbook contains a number of lookup values. I want the lookup values to be maintained in the single Source workbook, and I want this workbook to remain closed when the end users are using their Destination workbooks. It is critical that certain cells in the Destination workbooks have validated data in order for formulas and summarizations to be correct.

I'm happy if the Destination workbooks contain a lookup worksheet (perhaps hidden). In short, I'd like the contents from the Source workbook, Lookups worksheet, to just be replicated "as is" into the Destination workbooks, Lookups worksheet. I then want to do my data validation from that worksheet, which of course is open (data validation appears to only work with open workbooks).

I've investigated the techniques in this link: [URL]

Questions:

1) Are the techniques in that link about the best approach? i.e. an external link plus array formulas?

2) A blank cell in the source workbook (text column but formatted as General) is resulting in a zero in the external link. How can I make the external link exactly match the text as entered in the source workbook?

External File(s) Referenced And File Links Change Based On Row Cell

Get Data From Cells In External File - File Name Changes Daily

Aug 1, 2014

I have a file that gives some statistical data to my co-workers every 15 minutes. A common question I get is "How does that compare to last week?" Then I have to open the file from 7 days ago, find the data from the same time interval, and subtract it from this week's number in my head. I'd like to have excel do this for me.

I know how to get data from an external file. The problem is, these files are named with a date on the end of the file name. So tomorrow, the static formula won't work anymore (or rather, it will give data for a file from 8 days ago, instead of 7). I'd like to excel to use today's date, find the file from 7 days ago, and get the data from that file to compare to the current file.

Here's what I've done so far:

Code:
ThisDate = Range("C1").Value 'the cell with todays date in it
ThisDateName = Format$(ThisDate, "yyyy-mm-dd") 'now formatted the way I need it
ThisDate7 = Range("G1").Value 'the cell with the date 7 days ago
ThisDateName7 = Format$(ThisDate, "yyyy-mm-dd") 'formatted correctly
ThisDate14 = Range("G2").Value 'the cell with the date 14 days ago
ThisDateName14 = Format$(ThisDate, "yyyy-mm-dd") 'you know, in case of a holiday 7 days ago

I have no clue what to do next. I want Excel to: Use "ThisDateName7" to find the file with the name "pph_tracker_[ThisDateName7].xlsm"Get data from a cell in that file (say, C15)Subtract it from the data in the same cell (C15) in today's file (this week - last week)Give me the result in today's file (say in cell C20)Do that again for cells D15, E15, and so on (result in D20, E20, etc)

I assume I can figure out the rest from there. Can I use the variable names in an actual formula in cell C20? Something like:

=C15 - '[pph_tracker_{ThisDateName7}.xlsm]Sheet1'!C15
or even
=C15 - '[pph_tracker_{The Date in Cell $G$1}.xlsm]Sheet1'!C15
which would require no macros at all!

Formula That Uses Link In A Cell To Create Offset Link

Jun 28, 2013

I have two worksheets, one with detail monthly information and one with YTD information. So let's say the three numbers I want to capture in the YTD sheet are in columns B, G and I on the monthly sheet. January's data might be in B5, G5 and I5. February's data is in B12, G12 and I12 and so on.

On the YTD sheet in cell C2 I link to Monthly!B5 and in C3 I link to Monthly!B12 so cells C2 to C13 on the YTD sheet show the monthly totals from column B on the detail sheet. On the YTD sheet, cells C20 to C31 show the monthly totals from column G on the monthly sheet, so cells G5, G12, etc. And finally, cells C40 to C51 on the YTD sheet show monthly totals form column I on the monthly sheet.

In the past I've always created all these links manually. After creating the links in C2 to C13 on the YTD sheet, is there a way to use a formula in C21 that uses the link in C2 to create a link for G5?
