Close Open Instance Of Excel

Aug 6, 2013

I use the following code to open an existing open workbook in a new instance of Excel...

Everything works fine... What I would like to do is close (when I say close I mean, completely exit/quit the application). I'm not able to do that, the original Excel instance stays open with no spreadsheet open. I would just like it force the application to quit so that after running the code I would just have one Excel instance open (with the desired workbook, which works fine now)...

Public Sub Re_open_workbook()
Application.DisplayAlerts = False
ThisWorkbook.Save

[Code].....

Excel Instance Doesn't Close When Running Macro From Script

Jul 8, 2014

I have a VBS script that runs a macro in a workbook that is located in a SharePoint doc lib. The code looks like this:

[Code]....

I use code exactly like this to run other queries and it works great, but for some reason when I run this macro the instance of Excel doesn't end after the script is done running. I can see EXCEL.EXE sitting in the Task Manager and I have to end it manually.

Here is the code for the macro and related macros:

This macro just calls my other macros. Each terrslicersXX macro is a different sales territory for which there are slicers to filter out data.

[Code]....

An example of one of the sales territory slicers. Basically it just sets the slicer for the required sales territory so the SaveAsWebpage macro can save the information off as a webpage.

[Code]....

Saves the current data as a webpage.

[Code] ....

I have a feeling it has something to do with the last macro and how I publish the sheet as a webpage but I still can't get it to work.

Excel 2007 :: How To Open Workbooks In Same Instance

Nov 12, 2013

Had to rebuild my PC's hard disk and reinstall software. Now, whenever I open another workbook via explorer double click, a new instance of Excel starts. If I open another workbook using Excel's menu open, then the workbook opens in the same instance. I've tried a 'Repair' of Office and resetting the default programs to Excel for all Excel related file extension types.

Setting To Open Files In New Instance Of Excel?

Jan 10, 2011

I would really like excel to open files in a new instance of excel by default. Currently the only way I can do this is by starting excel and then File->Open. While this is only a little bit of extra effort, I've recently gotten in the habit of opening and closing 100s csv files daily and the wasted time really adds up. I've read several threads here, but mostly found people trying to accomplish the opposite of what I am.

how to close the instance of excel created by my VBS script.

I run the script to open a workbook run a macro within the workbook and save it. I'd like to also close the workbook and the instance of excel.

If I close the workbook within the end of my macro I get an unknown run time error from my script. If I elect to just save the file and close it within the end of script, the workbook closes but the instance of EXCEL.EXE is still running in task manager.

Macro To Close One Excel File And Open Another?

Jul 18, 2014

I have created several excel files as I cannot open them all at once since they are too large. So I have to open one excel file whilst closing another.

part1
part2
part3
part4
part5

I want a macro that opens the excel file part 1 and part 2. Then it should close part 1 and after closing part 1 it should open part 3. Once part 3 is open, part 2 should be closed and when part 2 is closed part 4 should open. When part 4 is open, then part 3 should be closed and part 5 should open.

Excel 2010 :: Deleting Conditional Formatting On Either Close Or Open

Jul 27, 2012

I have a problem where Excel 2010 is deleting one of my conditional formatting conditions. I do not know if it is deleting it on open or close. I just know that I enter the conditional formatting, save the workbook, close the workbook, reopen the workbook, and it is gone.

The other conditional formatting conditions (simple "Cell is Blank") are left intact.

Setup:

Cell with conditional formatting is on sheet "MyRecord" at "$E$7". A corresponding boolean value on separate sheet "Data" and must be referred to by using "OFFSET" with a record locator value (workbook level named range "RecordLocator") that leads to corresponding data row, so looks like following:

Code:
=IF(OFFSET(Data!$D$5,RecordLocator,0),TRUE,FALSE)

When I configure this, it works great until I save and close the workbook. When I reopen the workbook, this particular conditional formatting is gone with all other conditional formatting left intact.

I've tried using the actual range address in place of range name "RecordLocator", changes nothing.

I can't figure out why Excel deletes this particular conditional format.

CSV Files Open In New File Instance

Sep 22, 2008

I regularly process CSV files that are downloaded from various websites. The problem is, for some reason many (but NOT all) downloaded CSV files do not open in "Microsoft Office Excel" and thus, my primary workspace. They instead open in a separate instance of "Excel.exe" which is actually kinda nice because I can treat each separately, move windows around, etc. The problem is, macros that are in my primary workbook, cannot be seen by the secondary instance(s). So while I have created a number of nifty macros to clean up all the data and format it exactly how I want it in the blink of an eye, I can't run them when a file opens in its own instance.

1) How can I force ALL .csv files to open in the primary "Microsoft Office Excel" application? NOTE: Using the normal Windows Explorer "Open With..." function and setting the default application only works for LOCAL files, and does NOT work to control how remotely downloaded .csv files are opened.

2) How can I make it so that macros can be seen between Excel instances - such that when I choose to see macros in "all open workbooks", it will actually see the macros in the open workbook in the other primary Excel instance?

Force Workbook Open New Instance

Dec 14, 2006

I've created a UserForm which the user exclusively uses to interact with a workbook.

The problem is, if the user opens another workbook, it will open in the same Excel "Process" or "Instance" and the user would have to close the UserForm in order to use the other workbook they opened.

In VBA or some obscure application setting, is there a way to force workbooks to open in a new Excel Process (or new "Instance" of Excel)?

Another possibility would be to code something in the UserForm workbook that, on Workbook Open, would start a new separate Excel process....if that's even possible (can VBA execute a system shortcut or system command string?).

Multiple Instances (VBA To Open 3 Workbooks In Their Own Session/instance)

Feb 2, 2010

I'd like to use VBA to open 3 workbooks in their own session/instance/etc of Excel 2007. Ideally, there will be one main workbook, that upon opening will subsequently open the other 3 workbooks.

Also, when I open that first main workbook, I will obviously have to enable macros to get any code to run. Is there a way to carry this enabling of macros over to the other sessions to avoid having to enable macros in all 3 other workbooks? (Changing my security settings isn't an option)

Compile Error On Close Of Excel 2003 But Not On Close Of Workbook

Mar 22, 2012

I am using Excel 2003.

It’s been working perfectly up until around an hour ago. However, now when I close Excel, I get compile errors.

These compile errors seem to be because Excel is trying to access controls in the workbook after it has closed. Since the workbook is closed, VBA can no longer ‘see’ the controls, and therefore it thows up errors.

I’m also getting a similar error on a Worksheets("DataExplorer").unprotect line, which seems to be because the worksheet isn’t there after closing.

These errors only occur when I close the whole excel application using the big cross in the top right. If I just close the workbook (using the smaller cross just below the big cross in the top right of excel), it doesn’t throw up these errors.

Just to clarify: all of the code runs perfectly when Excel is open. The errors are being thrown up for lines of code which run without problem until Excel is closed.

VBA On Open/Close Conumdrum

Jul 27, 2006

I'm creating a template that will be opened by users and saved to a new name based on info provided by the user. I have macros triggered when opening and closing the workbook. The Before Closing sub does some data transfer between workseets. I'm running into a problem with the Open sub, however. I wanted to give the user a chance to abort the opening, giving a dialog that allows canceling. I wanted to just close the workbook.

However, if I include an Active.Workbook.Close line in the Open sub, it of course triggers the Before Close sub, but it leaves the On Open sub hanging. The workbook closes, but the next time I open it, the dialog in the Open sub doesn't come up. Close again, and it works ok or quit Excel between openings and it is ok. If I let the Open macro complete, bypassing the remainder of the macro if the user indcates canceling, how to I trigger closing within VBA? If the Open macro completes without an Activeworkbook.close statement things will just sit there until the user initiates closing.

Is there a way to terminate the Open sub from within the Before Closing sub if I create a flag to indicate closing started during the open sub or some other way around this problem?

Close All Open Workbooks Except......

Feb 25, 2008

I made an Excel based program that uses multiple workbooks with two main workbooks (Master List and Products) that all the others pull information from. I run into a problem when a user clicks the close X in the upper right hand corner and the entire application closes. I found some code that will let me close all the workbooks but one (the code is put in the Products workbook in the BeforeClose event).

For Each wb In Workbooks
If Not wb Is ThisWorkbook Then
wb.Close SaveChanges:=True
End If
Next wb

Is there a way to modify the code so it will close all the workbooks but the two main ones if someone clicks the close X button in the upper right hand corner?

Open Userform When You Close A Spreadsheet

Mar 5, 2007

I've got a 'Control Panel' spreadsheet which is all based on UserForms. When a user clicks a particular button, it opens one of many separate 'Regional' sheets which they work in.

When the user closes the 'Regional' sheet, I would like the 'Control Panel' sheets userforms to show again. However I can find no way of doing this as it simply switches back to the 'Control Panel' sheet without loading the forms (as I had to hide the 'Control Panel' useforms to give them access to the 'Regional' sheet).

Using VBA To Open And Close Source File

Feb 1, 2010

I am working with a bunch of files to do a dashboard. I have the main file which shows end results and what my users will see "Dashboard". I have about 10-15 files which I export weekly from MS Access. and I have the "Dashboard Data" file. In this file I have a sheet which links all the information for the files exported from MS Access. In here I have named ranges and dynamic ranges plus additional columns created to look up information in other tables. I use this file as my source data for my Dashboard File so that I can reduce the size of the actually dashboard. Dashboard Data file is about 5.5 mb and my Dashboard is 300kb. I have 12 branches that need to view the data over a radius of a hundred miles so the smal file are better.

My problem: I can get the Dashboard Data file to update without opening all the 10-15 other files. I cant however make the Dashboard file update without opening the Dashboard Data file. I have it to auto update without prompting but its still tells me that it cannot update. I was wondering if there is some VBA code I could use that would work like this:

I open the Dashboard File, Dashboard Data file opens so that Dashboard file updates and then close Dashboard Data File so that the user never has to see the Dashboard Data file. I dont want them to see it or have access to it.

So I recorded a macro to open up the file and this works fine.

How do I close it? I tried

wk1 = ThisWorkbook.Name 'Main Worksheet
...
Workbooks(wk1).Activate
ActiveWindow.Close

But the problem is that "wk1" is not set equal to the name, probably because the file is not an excel file, it has no extension.

Open Only The User Form ... Or Close Everything

Mar 22, 2006

Assume that the workbook Book1.xls opens a user form named myUserForm.

I'm trying to show only the user form on the desktop when I open Book1.xls, with Book1.xls minimized on the Taskbar.

And , if the Cancel button on the form is clicked, then unload the form and close Book1.xls.

That simple!

In ThisWorkbook, I have the event:

Private Sub Workbook_Open()
ActiveWindow.WindowState = xlMinimized
ShowTheForm
End Sub
On the Form, I have the Cancel button:

Private Sub btnCancel_Click()
Unload Me
ThisWorkbook.Close True
End Sub

The above procedure shows the form, with Microsoft Excel blank window in the background, and produces a small bar at the bottom left of the screen for Book1.xls
Click the Cancel button, and both the Form and Book1.xls close, but the blank Excel window remain open !

I suppose I would not be able to edit this version of Book1.xls, but that is fine for now!
