Colour Alternate Lines With Conditional Formatting
Jul 28, 2006
change the colours of alternate rows in order to make reading line by line easier. I know that I have used this before as a Conditional action ie:- if(mod...... etc
As always, the program I used it in has 'disappeared' so I can't check back with that.
Im trying to create a stock database based on a colour traffic light system. I have 2 set columns, the first is 'recommended stock' the second is 'actual stock'
When you paste in your requirements into the 3rd column it subtracts it from the acutal stock which tells you how much your recommended stock is short by.
What ive got as well is any stock above 1+ shows up in green (this needs changing - see below), anything below 0 shows up in red. What im struggling with is i want a rule that reads the recommended stock level, then flags it up yellow when the actual stock levels drop to 10% of full stock.
how to use the conditional formatting if that is the way.
I need to create a spreadsheet that has approximately 1000 rows with the same exact information in each of them prefilled (as I use the "drag-down" method). I use this chart throughout the year to enter various bits of data in each row. I also use conditional formatting in each row. The company I work for wants to have an empty space between each row. " You can create the blank rows separately and then interleave them with the existing rows by sorting. To start, insert a new column to the left of the existing column A. Enter 1 in cell A1 and highlight column A all the way to the last row that contains data. From the Edit menu select Fill | Series and click on OK. Column A should now contain numbers from 1 to the total number of rows. Press Ctrl-C to copy these cells to the clipboard, click in the cell just below the last of them, and press Ctrl-V to paste. Now highlight the entire data area, including the new rows with just a number in column A. Select Sort from the Data menu and choose the No header row option in the resulting dialog box. Under Sort by select Column A, under Then by select column B, and click on OK. Finally, delete column A. You now have a blank row after every one of the original 1,000-odd rows."
This works great for the data that I copied (with the drag down method) to all the rows. However, this method does not insert an empty line in between all the conditional formatting I have throughout the spreadsheet. This is my conditional formatting formula I have "manage rules" which is under "conditional formatting" =NOT(ISBLANK($A6)) (*please take note that this is selected for 1000 rows.) Maybe there is some kind of change in the formula that I need in order for the conditional formatting method to be copied onto every 2nd line of the 1000 rows".
I have only recently started playing around with macros, and am slowly getting into them. I do however still struggle a bit to ‘read’ them. Having played with formulas for years I can generally translate a string of formula text into English, like ‘if this cell value is greater than that cell value, then do this, if it is not then if it is equal to that cell value, do that, if not return 0’. Babbling like a child basically.
With visual basic I have managed to record some handy macros and then tweak them a little manually but I am still struggling to follow it going through it step by step reading it like a formula. So I hope you won’t mind me asking some very stupid questions. I mean well; I’m just a bit slow.
At present I am trying to do two different things on two different sheets, and I was wondering if perhaps one of you could nudge me in the right direction.
1: I am trying to insert a blank row above every row that has a certain word in column B.
So basically ‘find value “Example” in column B, and when you find it, insert an entirely blank row directly above it’.
2: Is a bit more challenging. I want to change the colour of a cell if the value in the cell corresponds with the value of another cell in the same column.
For example, I have a long list of surnames in column A. When I add ‘McNeil’ at the bottom, I would like to be able to run a macro that checks if the name McNeil appears anywhere else in column A, and if it does, that it changes the colour of the cell.
Preferably both of the cells that say McNeil, but one would do very nicely indeed.
If that is possible, I wonder if it is possible to do the same with the first name in column B, but only if there was a match for the surname in column A on the same row. So, if McNeil does not appear in column A, don’t bother, but if it does, does the corresponding first name appear in column B?
If both of that is possible, the next step would obviously be if McNeil appears in column A (say twice, once in A123 and once in A678), do cells B123 and B678 match as well?
On this particular formula but my colleagues have informed me that they require cells with no dates in to have no colour fill. Firstly, I have searched and tried myself with no success on stopping the below formulas from filling empty cells with red, they are as below;
I am trying to colour a whole row of data (in columns A through to AA) based on the numeric entry in column AB. The numeric entry is either 1, 2 or 3. I reckoned I needed to use the IF function, but as writing formula is not my strong point I am struggling to enter the correct data! The first row of data I wish to use is 3. I have tried the following but to no avail: =IF($AB3,1). =IF($AB3=1). =IF($AB3="1").
I am having problems with conditional formatting,on sheet1 ,if column "n" is yes then it is coloured red, when I search database say f124 I would like all records for f124 to appear and keep column "n" red or even better the whole row red,it seems just to locate all records with "n" =no and all orange /brown colour
I'm designing a holiday chart in work, and am using conditional formatting to colour cells. The problem is I have more than 3 conditions. Consequently I need to use a macro.
I am using conditional formatting to set the colour of a cell. I now want to change the colour of the adjoing cell to the same as the conditional format cell. CF doesn't have this as an option
I need a formula which will, alike conditional formatting, change the colour of a cell based on date or another cell.
For Example, If I was to enter a value of today's date it would be green up to a 3 month period, after 3 months it turns to amber and after 6 months red.
I can do it with conditional formatting on the date function when converted to days (see attached). Is there any way I can make the date updated column automatically match the date difference colour with a formula?
I want to change the colour in a cell depending on the sum of two other cells. ie A3=1,B3=1 A4=2,B4=1 A5=1,B5=0 A6=2,B6=4
So i want if A3+B3>2 THEN C3 TO HAVE GREEN COLOUR A4+B4>2 THEN C4 TO HAVE GREEN COLOUR A5+B5>2 THEN C5 TO HAVE GREEN COLOUR A6+B6>2 THEN C6 TO HAVE GREEN COLOUR
SO IN THE END ONLY C4 AND C6 WILL HAVE GREEN COLOUR.
Is there any formula to do so with conditional formatting?
I'm trying to set a conditional formatting to do the following:
If A1 is greater than 1, A2 will change its background colour to green. So the format needs to be in A2.
Basically in A1 is a page number that we have reconciled our bank statement to (labelled as "64" or "65" and so on), A2 has the end of statement amount.
Every month end we do a bank rec, the green cell is a marker to show what point we reconciled up to previous month.
I am trying to setup a monthly calendar. What I want to do is have it so that if you type "apples I want some", the cell changes colour to green, and also the apples doesnt appear in the cell. So when you press enter, all you will see is a green cell that says "I want some"
I was wondering if there was a way in VB within the worksheet to make this happen?
I would like to use conditional formatting verify that the lines of data being pulled from my application into Excel, but totaled using "=sum" are equal to totals pulled directly from my application. I believe that I should be able to use conditional formatting but am not sure how to make the formula work correctly.
To illustrate my problem: I have cells A1 (a total of a range), A2 (also a total of a range) and A3 (total of data pulled directly into my Excel report). In cell A3 I would like to verify that lines A1 + A2 - A3 = 0. This I can do without any problem, but there is rounding involved. The total of the above formula should be between -1 and 1 and still show as correct. I want the number in A3 to show up in red/bold when incorrect.
I have a column of cells that changes colour when certain text is entered into them, ie "TIME" will make the fill colour brown. However, when other text is entered into the cell alongside "TIME", the conditional formatting doesn't change the colour of the cell. How do i get around this so it picks up on the "TIME" text even when other text exists alongside it?
I have five columns D3 to H3 all with different amounts/currency value. I'm looking to get a formula or use conditional formatting to scan those five cells and highlight one of them green when Excel has determined which one is the cheapest out of the five.
I have figure A1 column which total amount accounting at cells A31. I need figure 360 as a benchmark calculation perfectly been done. In this calculation 360 well off inside cells A18 although actual number is 363. If we use Conditional Formatting when had enough total in cells the achieve 360, cells colour will be transformed to red. What formula which need I used to change no matter cells on A1 to A30 if sufficient study 360 automatically cells changing colour to red
I have a simple due date spread sheet for tasks that need completing at work. I am able to make the 'Due date' cell turn red when it is equal to or less than todays date, using conditional formatting. No problem.
I also have a 'Date closed' cell which is populated with a date when the task is complete.
What I am struggling to do however is change the red 'Due Date' cell to Grey once the 'Date Closed' cell is populated with a date. In fact I would like the whole row to be greyed out once the 'Date Closed' cell is populated.
I also have an 'Open / Closed' cell, which tells me if a task is open or closed, being chosen from a drop down I installed. Could this be used as an alternative to the 'Date Closed' cell. ie If someone selects 'Closed' in cell A4 the whole A row goes grey.
I am tracking figures over four weeks with a target of 4 sales per week. I have formatted the cells to light up - Green for 4 sales or more, Amber for 3, Red for 2 or less. I have set a monthly column up at the end of the table and want it to update the figure and colour that each member of my team is currently on. I can get it to change colour for the full 4 weeks worth of figure but want the montly column to be live and not cumulative. For example after 2 weeks if the total sales a member had achieved was 9, I would want the cell to be green. If after 3 weeks they had still only achieved 9 I would want the cell to change to amber once the 3rd weeks '0' figure had been added.
As far as I can tell Conditional Formatting will not work for this problem.
What I need now is some code to colour the rows in the data sheet ("Standards_Data"), so some other code (which is working fine) can then colour data points on a multiple graphs (which will be on the "Graphs" sheet). I've played around with as much code as I can find but nothing has the flexibility that I need or doesn't seem to work at all.
The idea is that users can adjust the colours using the Column A on the "Graphs" sheet to best highlight certain things. Also this list could then be edited as old Standard ID's become redundant and new ones come on line.
So in a nutshell: Colour rows in "Standard_Data" based on value of Standard ID (Column 4) according to the corresponding colour found in the list in the "Graphs" sheet.
I've attached a trimmed down version of the workbook.
How to colour cells depending on text in other cells, for example,
I would like cells D26:AA26 to turn light red if the letters 'FSM' are in cell 'E26' even if other text appears in it, eg 'SA+/FSM' I have been playing about with conditional formatting but can seem to solve the mixed text issue?
On one of our computers at work, Excel is acting especially strange. The conditional formatting in Excel on one of our computers is not working. In addition, we cannot fill a cell with any color or change the color of the writing. We can click a color for the letters and type it in, but immediately after another cell is highlighted, the writing goes black again. When we try to highlight multiple cells with the cursor, the cells are black instead of the normal color. This happens to not just spreadsheets that are new, but existing spreadsheets on our shared drive from only this one computer as well. No other computers are affected this way. All other computers show the spreadsheets fine and do not have any functionality issues.
I have a price list from a friend. The price list has to have every other row shaded. This part is no problem with the conditional format command.
The real trick, at least to me, is the background shade of the row is based on the first two letters in the left most column.
For instance:
Column A
CPST4 CPST5 FLADS3EC FLADS2EC FIL4
CP rows would alternate with one color while FL rows would alternate with a different color and FI rows would alternate with another different color. All other rows would have no shading.
MacOffice Excel 08 is used so no VB code can be used.
