Detect If Cell Is In 'editing' Mode
Mar 13, 2007
I'm doing the vba programming for excel where I added a button to the excel, and when user click on the button, it will trigger my function.
My question is: if currently there is a cell been focused, how can I know whether that is in the 'editing mode' (ie, focus on that cell and double click on that) or merely 'focus' on that cell? Any of the excel object property for this?

I've got a macro function which calculates the area of a polygon freeform using the 'shoelace'-methode. I would like to excute this function after i leave the shape editing mode.
For example: I have a square, freeform shape. By right-mouseclick I can edit the shape nodes. If i drag one of the nodes of the square to another position and click outside of the shape, the new shape is updated. Right, on that moment i would like to trigger my macro to recalculate the area.
Is there an event in excel to aim for, like the Worksheet.change-event or something similar?

I am trying to detect if a user leaves a cell empty. I have tried If statements like:
If Target.Value = "" Then
and
If (IsNull(Target.Value) Then
The problem is when the user uses the spacebar to delete an entry in that cell. If they leave any spaces after exiting the cell those if statements fail to run.

I've a sheet that presents the profitability of sales locations in a geographic layout (similar to Tables in a restaurant), each sales location is a cell, with roughly 1,600 locations presented. Each location is colour coded based on performance / measure, in a basic thermographic way [e.g. dark blue for very poor, solid red for high performance] with users being able to change metrics and re-colour cells accordingly.
The sheet is already information rich, but I'm wanting to detect the cell address directly under the pointer and populate a text box or other cell based on the value in the cell directly below the mouse pointer.
My question is; Is there a simple way of detecting the mouse position on the XL Grid? nb. Want to avoid having to activate cell beneath pointer.

We have a workbook with over 20 worksheets, each sheet with one or more tables in it. Several people use the workbook and we have decided that when someone changes a cell, they should mark the changed cell by filling it with blue using Format Cell. We have then nominated one person at end of each week who will check all the changes made during the week and either approve or reject them. So her task is to find all the blue cells, check them and then take the shading off.
What I would like to do is to create a macro to help her. I would like the macro to automatically identify all the blue cells in the workbook and give her a list of these cells. I wonder if someone could give me direction on a couple of things:
1) The command in the macro that would return whether a cell is shaded blue
2) The way in which I could cycle through all the content of each worksheet. I'm thinking worse case I would have to write instructions to go to each sheet, and then do an outer loop to go through each row, and an inner loop for each column (and the number of active cells varies by worksheet) -

I need an equation that lets me determine whether a cell contains a static constant value (either a string or a number), or an equation that generates a value.
Problem: I have a cell that contains a default equation that generates a default value, depending on a few conditions. The user can overwrite this cell with a constant. In another cell I need to know whether that cell is still the default equation or a new constant value.
I cannot simply test the value of the contents to see if they match my default, because the user may choose to enter that value.

I know of
Private Sub Workbook_SheetSelectionChange(ByVal Sh As Object, ByVal Target As Range)
but I would like to expand this idea to detect any change in cell selection across all open workbooks.

I'm working on a timetable for my boss and i'm trying figure out how to have vba detect when a specific set of cells gets an x typed into it and calculate 1 cell = 36.50 hours and input into the appropriate Sum column. The Sum Total is Column AR and i've put x's into some of the cells that will be containing them, i'm sure if i just get the basic code needed i will be able to implement it.

Is it possible to check the conditional state for a specific condition for a specific cell.
For example a cell has 1 or more conditions.
A condition will toggle to a condition if true or false etc.
The specifics is i use red (color 255) if a cell has not met a specific condition (of 1 or more conditions)
So if the cell is mandatory to be populated, and is blank, it will be red, if not it will be something else.
But i want to loop all visible cells with conditional formatting, and where the cell has a condition when true will show interior color = to 255 return the cell address.
To msg the user where data entry is still required etc.

I am trying to do the following with VBA.
What i need is to find out the last cell with data and then selecting the whole range and copying it.
Please see the below.
As you can see, the column with the "longest" data range is B9,C9,D9,E9.
I need a VBA code to detect which Column has the longest Data and from there copy the entire range.
Hence, in this case, the range to be copied is From A2:J9.
Column A
Column B
Column C
Column D
Column E
Column F
Column G
Column H
Column I
Column J

I am using a lot of double click routines in my sheet. In order for the sheet to be more user friendly I have used the comments of cells to tell the user what to do. For instance "Double click to choose type" or some such. Everything works great except that after the user selects what they want from the userform and it hides and the focus comes back to the sheet, the comment is in edit mode. While this is not horrible it is not as nice as I would like. I have tried to have my code send the active cell to another cell and then back, but that doesn't seem to work. Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep the comments from going into edit mode?

Now the problem is when user enters data in a Cell by double Clicking on it and after entering data if he directly clicks on a button then Macro that needs to be invoked is NOT executed. The only way is that he needs to press EnterKey OR Click on any other Cell and then click on the button.

I have users who don't press Enter (or move to a new cell) after entering text. They then try to click a form button - and of course - the macro does not run.
Is there an xl/vba solution to force them out of edit mode before clicking the button?

I have a spreadsheet wherein the column g keeps a chronological record of actions taken on a particular issue. Each time there is a new action taken on an issue, I go to the G column of the appropriate row, position my cursor at the beginning of the text already in that field, press CTRL Return twice, Press the up arrow twice and begin typing. I always add the date first followed by a colon,(e.g. 5/4, I bold that date and then position my cursor after the colon and begin typing the update to the status.
It occurs to me that all of the steps leading up to the typing of the issue could probably be autmated in a macro.

Cell A1 = Ref#01
Cell B1 = A1&(whatever I choose to type)
Result in cell B1: Ref#01whatever I choose to type
Looks like I would need a macro because a function will be overwritten as soon as I start typing in cell B1.

When a user clicks a cell in Column A, VBA will enter the date in the cell (in the form MMDDYY) and will position the insertion pointer at the end of the date. The user can then enter a four digit number following the MMDDYY. In this worksheet, Column A holds a transaction number, which is always in the form MMDDYYXXXX. I am trying to save the user the trouble of entering the MMDDYY, since it will always be today's date.

I have inherited multiple spreadsheets with thousands of hyperlinks in a single column, from all of which I need to extract the hyperlink text to audit it and edit it. The hyperlinks are only displaying less than useful words such as "Go To" "View" or "Click Here", for example.
Manually, I can right-click on the cell, select Edit Hyperlink, press Ctrl+End to select the entire link, press Ctrl+C to copy it, click on OK to close the editing dialogue, then paste it in the destination cell. That's easy, and good if you only have a few to do, but very tiresome if you have more than a dozen. Life's too short to do all those I need to do manually with a 29 day deadline!
I tried setting up a Macro to do it for me, but couldn't get it to work down a column and paste the result in the destination cell on the same row as each successive cell was located. I do very little Macro work, and I find Excel to be less than intuitive in this respect, so I gave up. (At least in Word you can see the whole step-by-step process in the Macro Editing window and easily fix it, if need be...).
One previous discussion, dating from 2006, supplied two answers. See [URL]
Should I set up a Macro and insert the above Function into it? Or is there a completely different way to do it? how to do this in Excel 2003/WinXP is very welcome.

What I'm trying to achieve is to be able to lock the text length of a column so that users can enter text data into that column but not exceed the allowable length for our purposes. I've found a way to use auto loading macros to make a popup if they exceed the set length.
However, that is useless for our purposes because 1) pasting data into the cells as opposed to manually entering data overrides the validation just as it does when you set it with the data validation menus, 2) it requires that macros be activated in the end user's computer which we cannot guarantee will happen. If you lock in the data validation by protecting the worksheet, the end user can't enter data. Do you know of a way to lock in the data validation without using active controls like macros, and yet allow the end user to enter data into the cells. (Perhaps a solution would be to somehow prevent the pasting of data into a cell forcing the data validation to be utilized?)

I am having this weird problem. The work laptop I received with excel 2010 does not allow me to use the vertical arrow keys when navigating through multiple lines when editing a cell. When editing the cell and I press the up or down arrow key, instead of moving to the next line within the cell, the cursor moves to the next cell. Is there a way / an option to have this fixed?

I'm going to be using a spreadsheet to keep track of where different people are at. So if Person 1 is in Room 3, I will stick a 3 in the box next to their name and then can look at the spreadsheet whenever I need and see what room they are in. When I'm deciding what room to put a person in, though, I need to be able to quickly glance at a list of Room #'s and see what one's are still available. So I have a bank of Room #'s in the spreadsheet....1,2,3, etc.
What I'd like, is some way to set this up so that when I put, for example, "3" in the cell next to "Person 1" the spreadsheet automatically removes "3" from the bank of available Room #'s and when I delete the "3" because the person has left, it adds "3" back to the bank of available Rooms.

I need to send a file to hundreds of users so that I can tell who has a particular add-in installed. This file will then be saved to a particular directory. The problem I'm having is controlling the error that occurs when the add-in is NOT installed. The below approach (using On Error Goto) clearly isn't the way to go. I need something like
If(Iserror(AddIns("AmartaSpecs") Then Cells(2,3)="No"
The code I have so far is:
Sub Amarta_Specs()
Dim a
'ActiveSheet.Shapes("Button 1").Delete
Cells(1, 1) = "Username"
Cells(1, 2) = "Computer Name"
Cells(1, 3) = "Add-in installed?"
Cells(2, 1) = Environ("Username")
Cells(2, 2) = Environ("Computername")
On Error GoTo Error
Set a = AddIns("AmartaSpecs")
Cells(2, 3) = "Yes"
Error:
Cells(2, 3) = "No"
ChDir "E:FinanceSQL Add-in test"
ActiveWorkbook.SaveAs Filename:="E:FinanceSQL Add-in test" & Environ("Username") & ".xls"
End Sub

I searched this site and found the code below to check if a worksheet to be updated is already open. It works fine (gets the desired message) if the workbook is open, but if not open I get "Run-time Error 9, Subscript out of range". I've played with it for a couple hours,
VB:
Dim wBook As Workbook
'Check that Summary worksheet is available for update.
Set wBook = Workbooks("CommittedSummary.xls")
If wBook Is Nothing Then 'Not open
'Do nothing
Else 'It is open
i = MsgBox("The 'CommittedSummary.xls' workbook is already in use and
cannot be updated. Please try again when the workbook Is available", _
vbCritical, "Committed Request Edit")
Goto EndUpdate
End If
