Format Formulas, Constants, Numbers & Text Cells Differently
May 8, 2008
I am attempting to write a VBA function that will add textual formatting to each cell that has content. I am just learning VBA; so far, as an example I have
Sub NewSub()
i = 1
j = 1
Do
Cells(i, j) = "'" & Range(i.j).Value & "',"
i = i + 1
Loop Until i = 40
End Sub
but, as I'm sure you'll notice, it does not work. In essence I want to wrap quotes and follow with a comma each cell that contains any content. The actual content test I haven't gotten to yet.
I'm dealing with a lot of spreadsheets put together by people who are not that familiar with Excel. Because of this, there are many instances where the formulas created include constants. For example: = A1 * B1 + 200. I want to create a VBA routine that will cycle through the cells I selected and "flag" those cells that have a constant in the formula.
Is it possible to use conditional formatting to highlight cells that use formulas, as opposed to having constants?
I have a sheet that uses formulas to provide a default value, but you can type in a number if you want to replace the default. I want to be able to easily identify which ones use the default formula.
If I use functions like FIND, they look at the result of a formula, and not the formula itself.
I know I can write a UDF that will figure it out but I was wondering if there is some built-in way.
Col A - budget items (description) Col B - budget dollars Col C - actual dollars Row 10 - summation Cols B and C
When the budget is prepared the actual dollars in Col C are equal to the budget dollars for all items. For instance the formula =b2 is placed in cell C2. As time passes the user records actual dollars in Col C for each item by entering the actual amount directly into the cell. Actual dollars do not become known all at the same time, so that Col C will contain a mixture of formulas and entered numbers.
How can I highlight the cells in Col C that have entered numbers rather than formulas.
In my company we have many spreadsheets with sections that contain formulas, which may be overwritten with "hard coding", manually entered constants, in certain situations.
Is there a way I can detect the differences between the two types of cells? I would like to setup conditional formatting that would highlight constants in a table that would generally only contains formulas.
The range changes each month so I want to use a named cell "LastRow" where I can change the number to replace the 2500. How do I use the range name in my formula without giving me a #value# error?
Is there a way, WITHOUT VBA, to have a cell turn color if a user overlays a function with a value. Using conditional formatting or an easier way if possible, I would like to have any cells that the user overlays with a number to have a different background color.
I know I could use an event-driven macro but am trying to find a function that can check a cell to see if it contains a formula (or function) or a value.
I have a macro which imports data from a mainframe dump text file and performs 'Text to Columns' on the imported data so that formula in the spreadsheet can act on the data. The code works perfectly well when I use it, but if a different user logs on and performs exactly the same mainframe dump and import macro the Text to Columns action splits the raw data in a different way and the result is that the split renders the formulae useless.
I've experimented a little and for some reason it appears that the 'Field Info' parameters which are produced when the Text to Columns function is recorded in a macro differ between users even though the raw data is exactly the same.
I am trying to pull titles out of a text string but its quite difficult because of how the data was originally inputted. I need titles that appear in the following different formats
" title" title/ title"
These titles were not inputted consistently and it could show up in the middle or at the beginning. I have attached a sample of the data that i am working with and a sample formula that i was trying to use to obtain my information. The formula that i have is a nested formula of find and mid formula that searches for the text within " ".
B1, C1, E1, F1, H1, I1, K1, L1, N1, O1 will contain 1 of 10 different names (John, James, David, Jack, Alex, Aaron, Jason, Stan, Robert, Will)
I need A25 to pull the info from B1 A26 to pull the info from C1 A27 to pull the info from E1
If B1 and E1 have the same name then A27 should be blank.
Also C15, G15, and K15 contain a number. If A25 is not blank, then B25 should equal C15; If A26 is not blank, then B26 should equal C15; If A27 is not blank, then B27 should equal K15. However, if B1 and E1 contains the same name, then A25 should equal C15 + K15.
If B1=John C1=James E1=David F1=Jack and C15=10 G15=15 K15=20
then A25=John A26=James A27=David A28=Jack and B25=10 (C15) B26=10 (C15) B27=15 (G15)
But if B1=John C1=James E1=John F1=Jack and C15=10 G15=15 K15=20 then A25=John A26=James A27=(blank because John is already listed in A25) A28=Jack and B25=25 (C15+G15) B26=10 B27=(blank) B28=15(G15).
Macro to clear cells with numbers but no cells with formulas with in this macro:
Dim i As Long i = Range("E3") If i > 0 Then ' Copy range Range(Cells(6, 10 + i), Cells(500, 17)).Copy Range(Cells(6, 10), Cells(500, 17)).Select ' Paste special ActiveSheet.PasteSpecial Format:=2, Link:=1, _ DisplayAsIcon:=False, IconFileName:=False ' Clear i columns on the right Range(Cells(6, 18 - i), Cells(500, 17)).ClearContents End If End Sub
The range is where the cells with numbers need to be cleared but not the ones with formulas.
How to format different numbers to the same format (as text). Mainly I need code that would format numbers like 25, 25.36 or 254.60 to numbers looking like this 000002500, 000002536, 000025460. They must be of nine digit length with the last two digits as decimals.
I need the SUM function. I know how to use SUM and in one of my workbooks it is used quite a few times, but for two columns it will not add the columns up. In the Q column I have this formula throughout the cells: {=IF(AND($H6="DM",$J6=1),"$100.00","")} and the other column is just about the same (just has different H6 value). Then I have a cell with the formula {=SUM(Q6:Q900)} and the end result is $ -. This formula is used for other columns and it works just fine. I have checked the formatting in all the cells and have changed them to General, Number, Currency, and Accounting. None of those working. I have also checked the Calculation Tab in Tools>Options... and it is set to automatic.
I want to colour 10 cells (A1-J1) if I type in yes in cell K1. Using conditional formatting Im only able to colour 1 cell. Is this possible without using VBA?
I am a biologist that works with transgenic animals and I am using Excel to keep records of my mice. I would like to have a column that includes the age as calculated by the DOB of my animal on any given day. Furthermore I would like for it to be smart enough to tell me in weeks for younger mice and months for older mice. If i do this, obviously i will need a txt string that says "x mnths" or "Y wks" or whatever.
i have come up with an if/then string that works - but for some reason it will not allow me to format the number of decimal places if i include text. here is the function:
=IF(((TODAY()-B6)/7)>12,((TODAY()-B6)/30.417) &" mnths", ((TODAY()-B6)/7) &" wks") the B6 cell is the DOB of that particular animal.
so what this SHOULD shoot out is something to the effect of "4 mnths" or "3 wks" depending on the age of the animal. any animal older than 12 weeks will express in function of months and any younger will be in weeks. however what i end up seeing is something like this: 5.81911431107604 mnths I dont need any where near that many dec places...and obviously this doesn't fit in any reasonably sized cell......
I have a column of numbers and want to make sure everything has been entered correctly from our scanning software. Basically, I want to automatically highlight any cell that has any letter in it (e.g. z12o2 instead of 21202 or R705 instead of 5705), ignoring any cells that contain only numbers. I haven't had any luck using conditions based on formulas like =ISTEXT.
I use web queries to download stock options from MSN Money. If I manually refresh the queries (right click -refresh) the downloaded prices are in number format.
Same file shared by many users in the office. File is maybe 2200 rows long and 20 columns wide. Last column is a text field where users can explain variances. Cells in the last column are wrapped and the rows auto-fit on the height. Zoom is set at 100%.
One person opens the file and it looks fine on the screen. Print preview also looks fine. File prints out perfectly.
Another user opens the file and it looks fine on the screen. BUT, print preview shows that the bottom line or lines of text is cut off. File prints exactly like the preview showed with clipped text.
Both users can point the file to the same printer, but that doesn't seem to change anything. Still prints with text clipped for one person and perfectly for another...
Is there anyway of converting the output (which is 7 and in text form) to a useable number format so that I can take advantage of the VLOOKUP function (instead of getting a #N/A)....
There is probably a really easy answer to this question but I cannot seem to figure it out. I need to calculate the sum of pages faxed on a fax report at my office on an excel spreadsheet which is downloaded from our server. It appears the file is not meant to be used in excel but it downloads as an "*.xls" file anyway. When I open the file I receive this message:
"The file you are trying to open, 'FaxCetailReport.xls', is in a different format then specified by the file extension. Verify that the file is not corrupted and is from a trusted source before opening the file. Do you want to open the file now?"
The file is comnig from a trusted source so I select "Yes" and it opens just fine. There are just over 50 rows of info, one of them being the number of pages. In a blank cell I enter "=SUM(select rows)" and the result is a "0". I have converted the cells to the "number" format, no change. When I right click on the cells and select format, the protection tab on the right has the check box "Locked" checked and unchecking it does nothing, it is checked as soon as you go back in to the protection tab.
The only way around this is to manually retype the numbers in a cell next to the pages column, which is ok for 50 numbers, but I have some sheets where there is over 1,000 entries.
In the publishing industry we have what we call ISBN numbers you will see that every book has a unique number. For thee company that I work for the number always starts as follows -
978-0-7153-
This is followed by five numbers sometimes 4 with a letter i.e.
978-0-7153-12345 978-0-7153-1234X
Is it possible to pre format the cells in a column so that the 978-0-7153- part of the code would be there hiding in the background and all you have to do is type the 12345 to get 978-0-7153-12345 displayed?
how can you custom a cell format in which you may in type in information that is displayed as ###-##-####-@# I searched everywhere and cannot find this.
For example, a medicare number.
I would need to type in 581566223b6, and it should be displayed as 581-56-2236-B6.
A B C D E F G 23445566894 Brwn pdc aft Cat1 45687930596 $5 45687930596 Gld wdget adi Cat2 23445566894 $6
In the example above, I would like to do a vlookup in column C that matches the digits in column A to those in column F, with the output being the corresponding value in column G. I believe it involves the left function but not sure how to really use it here.
I generated my urls to online photos, I referenced cells where some are only numerical (ex. 479) while others contain a numerical/text mix (ex. 3014-RACK). Here is my url code in excel...
I have the same report, one a monday snapshot, the other a daily comparison. I would like to index columns B, in both reports, to find the same part number and then reference the horizontal row and highlight increases in columns G thru AD. The comparison report looks identical but the column B numbers may not be in the same location. this is a report to show prosduction requirements and the increases throughout the week.
I have a situation where I have to curve fit data, this can lead to different formulas being used with varying constants.
Is it possible to pickup a TEXT based formula and related constants from other cells, and then place this into another cell as a functioning formula. For Example
Cell A1 contains the formula as a text string whether it be y=a+bx+cx^2, or y=a+b/x, etc Cells A2:A6 contain the individual constants, a, b, c, etc
I would then want the VBA to read the text based formula and put it into an output cell as a functioning excel formulae.g
In cell B10: =a+b*A10+c*A10^2
I understand picking the constants up and putting the formula should not be too much of an issue, however trying to insert the variable form of the curve fit is the part that I am struggling with, and am unsure if possible.
