How To Count Range Relative To Dynamic Reference

Apr 1, 2014

I am trying to create a formula to count a range relative to a dynamic reference (at least I think that's you would phrase it).

I thought I was on to a winner with this:

Formula:

But it doesn't seem to accept the : as a legal operator.

I suspect the answer is to use SUMPRODUCT somehow.

Use Range Of Selected Cells As Relative Reference

Mar 8, 2013

I have a data that is split into multiple cells and needs to concatenated. Unfortunately, the number of columns wherein lies the data varies throughout the workbook. As such, I wanted to select a range of cells, define this range as the reference point for the macro, run the macro, then move on (selecting a different number of columns on the next try).

For example, I have this:

A
B
C
D
E

1

No
Not Very Far

[Code] .....

I want to select cells A1:B1, run a macro concatenated the two columns, then select cells C1:E and run the same macro to get this:

A
B

1
No
Not Very Far

[Code] ........

So far, I have this:

Code:
ActiveCell.Columns("A:A").EntireColumn.Select
Selection.Insert Shift:=xlToRight, CopyOrigin:=xlFormatFromLeftOrAbove
ActiveCell.Offset(5, 0).Range("A1").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=CONCATENATE(RC[1],RC[2])" '

Selecting Relative Reference Range For Fill Down?

Dec 11, 2013

I'm trying to use relative references and am have having trouble with selecting a range for the fill down command.

I'd like to copy a formula down in the last column from row 1 to the last row with data. Column D is static so I can always use it to find the last row. The last column will vary; sometimes it might be G another time it might be X. I'm able to get the formula entered into the proper cell but I can't figure out how to select the range for a fill down.

If I was not using relative references and cell X1 always had the formula then Id code it like this:

'*** Find last row with data
Range("D1").Select
LastRow = Range("D65536").End(xlUp).Row
'*** Calculate length of cell in previous column

[Code]....

It's the last range statement that stops me. I haven't come up with a variation that allows me to select a range from the cell on the first row of the last column and select the last row with data for the same column.

Reference Cells Relative To Activecell In A Range

Nov 4, 2008

I've been trying to get the sum of a range of cells based on their relation to the active cell. Here is the Pseudo
If the SUM of (the cell 2 rows up THROUGH the cell 2 rows up and 2 columns to the left) = 0 then .......

*****end pseudo

I think that activecell.offset is the best way to do it, but I can't figure out how to work that in a range....

Here is my code so far:

Worksheets("Generic SPC").Activate
Worksheets("Generic SPC").Range("c2").Select

'Do for all cells in the row
Do

ActiveCell.Offset(0, 1).Select
If Application.WorksheetFunction.Sum(Range( _
ActiveCell.Offset(-2, 0), ActiveCell.Offset(-2, 2))) = 0 Then
ActiveCell.Value = 0
ElseIf Application.WorksheetFunction.Sum(Range _
("ActiveCell.Offset(-2, 1), ActiveCell.Offset(-2, 3)")) = 0 Then
ActiveCell.Value = ActiveCell.Offset(-2, 0).Value
Else: ActiveCell.Value = 0
End If

Loop Until IsEmpty(ActiveCell.Offset(0, 1)) = True

******End Code

Range doesn't like activecell.offset. Does anyone know how to do this?

In my data validation I have the following formula as the Source: =INDIRECT(SUBSTITUTE($F$2," ","_")). I want to be able to copy the cell and paste it into another cell and have the formula update to reference the new cell. Currently the validation is for cell G2 and references F2. I want to be able to copy G2 and paste it in G3-G6 having the formula update so it refrences F3-F6.

Excel 2007 :: Convert Absolute Reference Into Relative Reference

Feb 4, 2014

I have encountered some difficulty in modifying a macro I wrote into what I need. I created a macro that searches a column (Column C) for a cell value of, "stop", and then it copies everything above that cell and pastes it onto another sheet. In the sample data set that I was using, "stop" first occurred in cell C541, so the macro copies C1:C540 and pastes it onto another sheet. The problem is that the macro created an absolute reference to C540. What I desire is for the macro to use the 'Find' function to locate the first occurrence of, "stop", offset one cell above that cell, and then reference the active cell (which was positioned by these last two steps) in the range that should be copied. Basically, I'm hoping to have cells C1 through the active cell copied and then pasted onto another sheet.

Code below.

Sub FAIL()
'
' FAIL Macro
'
'
Sheets("Reformatted").Select
Columns("C:C").Select
Selection.Find(What:="stop", After:=ActiveCell, LookIn:=xlValues, LookAt _

[Code] .......

This is because the number of roads changes for each project.

I created a dynamic range name surfacing with the following formula:

My question is what formula do I use to reference the sum column for each row on the Det Est Sheet.

Circular Reference With Dynamic Named Range Used In Formula

Aug 13, 2008

I have a problem creating a circular reference with dynamic ranges. I have searched already but can't find the specifc problem. I have a spreadsheet where I use vba code to insert extra columns. Within the worksheet there are sum calculations at the end of each row. When I add a new column within the table I would like the sum calculation to expand to account for this extra column.

Now, I thought that dynamic ranges would be the way to go but the only way I can see to do it creates a circular reference as the CountA function trys to count the cell with the sum function in it.

Count Blanks In Dynamic Range

Feb 25, 2010

I want to count blanks in a horizontal range (all in one row) that will change (dynamic range). The values in the range could be numbers or words. Some values may be added to the end, but there may still be some empty cells to the right of the last value. My goal is to count blanks in the range up to the last entered value, but no beyond that. As an example:

A6 = 2
B6 = empty cell
C6 = 2
D6 = empty cell
E6 = tt
F6 = empty cell

The range for the count blanks would be A6:E6. F6 is not included because the last entered value is in cell E6.

The answer (count blanks in dynamic range) should be 2.

I have got these 3 formulas to work, but it seems that there must be a better (shorter, faster calculating, more elegant) formula than these:

=COUNTBLANK(OFFSET(A6,,,,MATCH(9.9E+307,MATCH(A6:F6,A6:F6)+TRANSPOSE(ROW(INDIRECT(""1:""&COLUMNS(A6:F6)))))))

=COUNTBLANK(OFFSET(A6,,,,MATCH(9.9E+307,MATCH(A6:F6,A6:F6)+{1,2,3,4,5,6})))

=COUNTBLANK(A6:INDEX(A6:F6,MATCH(9.9E+307,MATCH(A6:F6,A6:F6)+TRANSPOSE(ROW(INDIRECT(""1:""&COLUMNS(A6:F6)))))))

As the source date is variable (number of lines can vary) I have set the macro to take the variable number of rows into account.

Evertyhing works as it should.

Now my question:

in the final sheet, I want to fill the first empty column at the end of all filled-in columns with a count function. selecting the last column works, but I have problems with making the COUNT function variable. It should count the number of cells with a value in it. However as the number of columns can vary, the count function should take that into account. Furthermore, it should never take the first and last column into account.

Count Number Of Cells In Dynamic Range In VBA?

Jul 23, 2013

I have a function which copy pastes data into a sheet based on a filter criteria. It is also pasted in a specific layout(shown below) starting from Cell A1 in the top left corner. Therefore the destination sheet could have a different number of rows with values each time.

What I would like to do is count the sum of 'Values' in the destination sheet, and add a total below it.

For example, the [=TOTAL] cell is where I want the total to appear. Below the answer would be 26. But say if Peter wasnt in the record, the formula should still work in identifying the Total as 20.

Title:

Petrov G

Is there a way I can achieve the desired result? I figured I had to somehow count from the first record by Peter, to the last one, whichever that may be.

Excel 2003 :: Dynamic Named Range Of Non-contiguous Cells Suitable For Chart Series Reference

Nov 11, 2012

I am running Excel 2003 on a Win7 system.

Here is my situation:

Each of my data sets spans roughly 75 columns by 250 rows at present, but this could expand. The first 7 rows contain metadata. Columns 2-25 or so contain the raw data, from which everything to the right is calculated. The data sets have most columns in common, but not necessarily all.

In order to tease out the most meaningful information from my data, I frequently sort all or part of it based on varying criteria. When I find a useful sorting criterion, I create a new column with a header that describes the criterion and populate it with a formula that returns a 1 if the condition of interest is met for that row, or a 0 if it is not. For example, if I am doing this in column AA, I might enter

=--(AND($AX8>$AA$4,$Y8>0))

and copy it down to the end of the data. The resulting vector of 1s and 0s quickly re-identify data that meets that criterion even after subsequent resorting. It also makes locating data that meets multiple sorting criteria extremely simple. Essentially, I create a truth table.

Cell $AA$4 in the above example contains a "comparator" value I might wish to change at some point, which would change the subset of data the condition selects for.

Here's the first hard part:

For each data set, I need the ability to generate meaningful plots that includes separate series based on the criteria I have described. However, I also need to retain the ability to resort the data or change the comparator value without disrupting these plots. In other words, the plots must NOT change when the order of the data is changed, but MUST change to display the appropriate data when the comparator changes.

Here's the 2nd hard part:

Once I have this working for one data set, I need to be able to port it to other data sets (which are contained in other workbooks), so that I can compare equivalent plots from each. I also need to minimize the number of manual steps involved in doing so, to avoid human errors and excessive time consumption.

The only other possible complication I can think of at the moment is that, to this point, I have been inserting blank rows to isolate subsets that I do not wish to perform further sorting on from each other.

Right now I am angling toward VBA code that loops through the entire data set to generate base dynamic ranges using the column header row (row 1) as the names, and the entire column of data for the rangeloops through the truth table columns to generate "branch" row ranges for each of the sorting conditions,loops through the entire data set one more time to create "branch" ranges for each of the base ranges.

I could generate some code to accomplish a one-off solution for a given configuration of a single data set (provided there is not a list length limit in a chart series that I'd be violating)...but without a dynamic named range, I don't know how to get to something that would update appropriately. So in essence, I am still stuck at the dynamic range part of this.

Using Relative Reference In Macros

Feb 4, 2010

a user i'm assisting wants to calculate totals by recording a macro that sums all the rows in a column using relative cell references. this is because the user runs a report that pulls in data that varies. one week the report may contain 40 rows that need to be totaled, and the next week there may be 60 rows that need to be totaled.

here's what i did:place cursor in cell where i want total to appear
go to VIEW menu, MACROS tab, and click USE RELATIVE REFERENCES
click RECORD MACRO
enter name, description, assign shortcut key
go to FORMULAS menu and click AUTOSUM
press RETURN

when i test the macro out on columns containing the same amount of rows, it works fine. but when i run the macro on a column with more rows, it only totals the amount of rows contained in the original macro. see attached.

Change Relative Reference To Absolute

Apr 4, 2014

I have an Excel workbook with multiple worksheets. One of the worksheets has a live data feed for stock updates. I extract data from the live feed (it's in multiple sentences) and pull it into 6 columns. In another worksheet, I pull those 6 columns into the sheet through the use of Index / Match. That second sheet has additional formulas that essentially analyze the data. As the data refreshes, the existing data moves down the column.

What I didn't think about was the fact that at times, a stock may be listed several times because different brokers are offering updates. Because I used Index / Match, it will look for the first match from the top and display that data in the relevant columns. Unfortunately, some of the data needs to stay with the matching row (and stock ticker) but because of the way I wrote the formulas in Index / Match, it just finds the first matching target and displays that data.

I can correct this by using an absolute reference ($) but I can't find a way to "copy down" formulas using absolute references. I also have one column of cells that contain 1 absolute reference and one relative reference.

I'll re-write this manually if I have to but I have 1,800 cells to change.

Relative Reference To Work Sheet

Nov 27, 2006

I am dealing with a workbook that will hold an undetermined amount of worksheets. Each of these worksheets will have have a series of numbers that are summed to a total within one cell. Lets say cell A10. For every spreadsheet, no matter what, this number will be stored in cell A10.

My first sheet will then be a master listing of all the other sheets in the workbook. In column A I will have the names of each sheet and in column B I want excel to list the value of A10 for the corresponding sheet listed in column A

So normally it would look like this on the master sheet

A | B
Sheet 2 | =Sheet2!A10
Sheet 3 | =Sheet3!A10
Sheet 4 | =Sheet4!A10

Where the formula would give me the value of A10 in the respective sheet.

What I would like to do is, within column B, I want to replace the sheet reference with the cell that contains the name of the sheet. So it would then be a formula similar to the below setup(Although this does not work because I have tried it)

A | B
Sheet 2 | =A1!A10
Sheet 3 | =A2!A10
Sheet 4 | =A3!A10

The hope is that excel would substitute in Sheet 2 for A1 and there by give me the sheet reference that I need. This way I can continuosly add sheets to the workbook and as long as I have the correct Sheet names in column A, all I need to do is drag the formula down column B and I will pull all of the necessary information without having to retype the formula each time.

Relative Cell Reference For Summing

Dec 17, 2008

This is one of about 25 sheets in one excel file, and I will be receiving about 5 different files a week, so a macro is necessary to save time. I tried to create a macro just by recording, and it was not able to adjust to the variances in the number of lines between the sheets.

I need it to do the following, and more or less in this order:
-Delete Column A
-Create text and format A1:C1
-Sort rows 2 through the last row based on column C values (from largest to smallest, although its not shown in the picture above)
-Create a sum at the bottom
-Apply grid lines to all the data

I don't have a problem with the first two, but I cannot figure out how to adjust for the number of rows for sorting, offset 1 cell down to create the sum formula below the data, or how to properly write the macro for the sum formula itself. When I recorded the macro, it used cell references like Range("C5").Select and others which do not adapt to the varying number of rows.

I tried using the offset command in this thread without much luck.

This is some of the macro I have:

Columns("A:A").Select
Selection.Delete Shift:=xlToLeft
Range("A1").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Customer ID"
Range("B1").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Customer Name"........
