Multiple Vlookup Results As A Text String
Apr 24, 2009
I have searched other postings but can’t seem to find the answer.
I was wondering if anyone had a solution on how to string multiple Vlookup results as a text string so that if I Vlookup “Pear” it will return “Red, Blue, Green” in adjacent cell
i.e
A B
1 Fruit Colour
2 Pear Red
3 Orange Purple
4 Apple Green
5 Banana Yellow
6 Pear Blue
7 Pear Green
8 Banana Black
9 Orange Green
10 Apple Black
Is Vlookup the right function to go with here?

I have a large spreadsheet of data, with lab results by date. Sometimes, there are multiple data points for a single date.
I need to produce monthly reports that list all the results for specific tests in a given month.
So, for example:
Date SG Property Tank
1/5/12 1.015 567324 2044
3/15/12 1.002 568210 2103
3/18/12 1.025 568056 2044
3/18/12 1.036 565200 2102
4/1/12 1.019 566713 2103
I would like to make a report for March that looks like this:
Date SG Tank
3/15/12 1.002 2103
3/18/12 1.025 2044
3/18/12 1.036 2102
And the next month, make a report for April, then May... etc.
I tried to think of a way to do this using vlookup or index/match, but couldn't figure it out.I also tried using filters and then automating some kind of copy/paste, but there is an extra line between the heading and the data, so that the date column is filtered as text instead of date. The source data is not my spreadsheet, so that would be difficult to change.

I would like to do a lookup function, in which multiple results are returned.
i.e.
VLookup Result 1
Result 2
Result 3
Etc.
I know how to do it if there is only one answer but say I have a unique identifiers in which I want all the results in column B:B displayed one after another, say locations have numerous products sold/manufactured at it.

Hi, I'm sure this will be an easy one for most of you. I need to extract data from an array for each time I have recorded a specific vehicle registration. I have used VLOOKUP but this only gives me one result. I need excel to display every enrty for the registration I am looking for. I have attached a sample file which should make more sence.

I have a column with lots of tube station names. I have a look up table with the tube station name, and the possible lines that pass by that tube station.
One tube station may be covered by more than one tube line.
I am looking for a formula that will output every tube line that caters that one tube station.
first question, what is the best way to organise the data in my look up table.
Second, is a vlookup the best formula to achieve the output I want? i.e. Reflect how many tube lines cover each station
see table below: If the station name has only one tube line, Vlookup works fine. When the station, such as Canno Street, has two tube lines, Vlookup only picks up one tube line. If I duplicate Cannot street under the station name, the Vlookup picks only one tube line.
LOOK UP TABLE A1 - station name
B1 Tube line name
Cannon Street
District
[Code].....
Is there a formula that will output the data of the second tube line name in column D1?

I am using the VLOOKUP function to pull multiple columns of information from another sheet in the same workbook based on a name. The sheet it is pulling from is a query. I am looking up product names, and in the query there may be multiple results that the function can find.
VLOOKUP only returns the first result that is found. What I am trying to do is get it to dump all the results into a drop down list in one cell. If I attach a drop down to one of the columns of information I am retrieving, then I can select which of the entrys to display, right? I think this should work I just don't know how to go about setting it up to do it.
How would I set up a VLOOKUP formula that attaches a drop down list containing all the results that the function finds?

What I need is a script or formula with returns multiple results and puts them into one cell.
The Excel is used as a Project Managment Work Sheet for Resources, working on different Projects and their dedicated hours
The raw data table looks like this:
Column A: Project Name (=AllProjectsLists)
Column E: Resource Name (=MasterDataResources)
Column P: values from 0 to 8 (hours)
First I need to check per row the Resource Name. If the Resource Name is a match, than I need to check if in column P the value is bigger than 0. The result goes into a different sheet per row, one result per Resource, but the multiple results should be shown in one cell.
So the result should be something like:
Resource name "Thomas" .... Projects working on: "Project 1, Project 5, Project 13, ..." (in one cell)
Resource name "Mary" .... Projects working on: "Project 3, Project 9, Project 13, ..." (in one cell)
I tried with this one, but it only returns one vale per cell:
=SMALL(IF(E$9=MasterDataResources; ROW(MasterDataResources)-ROW($A$2)+1), ROW(1:1))
=INDEX(AllProjectsLists; SMALL(IF(E$9=MasterDataResources; ROW(MasterDataResources)-ROW($A$2)+1); ROW(1:1)))

So i have a spreadsheet that has a list of members and how many events they have attended. That is fine because i achieved this by doing a countif function on their account number. The spreadsheet has to sheets Events Attended TOTAl and List. In the list it has their name account number and what event they attended and what date. What i need is to have a function that will lookup their account number and return what event they attended but they might have been to 4 different events.
I have a total of 5 columns dedicated to Event attended so we can tell it to lookup first event and return result then have an if function in the next column to lookup event and if its returned in previous column move onto the next event attended.

I'm attempting something new, a dropdown menu using vlookup to find data . If i use the simple example below, using data from B-D on 1 worksheet, where i want to find people by county:
A B C D
Search by County Name County Town
John Sussex Brighton
Eric Yorkshire York
Jim Cheshire Manchester
Liz Sussex Hove
Sarah Avon Bristol
I've created a dropdown menu on a second worksheet,A2, by county search, to return a persons name, county and town. The problem is if i select Sussex i will get 2 names who live in different towns within Sussex. I've created a simple vlookup which works fine, but because of Sussex having 2 results, i created a second vlookup for the second result to appear in the cell underneath.
The problem is that for the results that only have 1 result, the second vlookup returns a the same result as the first result, which i dont want.
Is there a way where multiple results will be shown if they exist, but for one result to appear if only one result exists?

The 3 vlookup will be in a single cell for concatenation like :
=vlookup1&"-"&vlookup2&"-"&vlookup3
Problem the are 3 vlookups where it will return names (with format -> Fname, Given Name Middle) and probably blank returns.
I have problem with the replace since there are also spaces between the Fname,Gname and Mname sample name with spaces.

E.g. productA 100
productB 200
When I'm writing in the order list, I'm writing in a single cell product code + size e.g. productA 5, productB 7
I need to get the corresponding price for each cell.

I need to to highlight keywords within a block of text (string). I don't need to necessarily return a value with the VLOOKUP. I just need to compare keyword list in Column B to the Text in Cell A1. If the word from the list appears in the text, I need it to be highlighted for every instance.
EXAMPLE
Text String (A1)
Welcome to Jake's Car Accessories website. We have all of your car accessory needs including car covers, truck covers, custom car grills and other car accessories.
Keyword List (Column B)
car accessory
car covers
truck covers
car accessories
I think VLOOKUP only works on lists.

How do I use an Excel formula to find which (if any) multiple sets, each of up to 50 words, exist in a series of rows of a spreadsheet - if set A has one or more words found in a searched cell.
A positive result will return a specific value in the designated result cell. If none of the words in Set A is found in the searched cell, the formulae will repeat the test for the words in Set B, and so on.
After all 50 sets of words have been tested, the formula will move to the next cell in the searched column.
New words will be added to the sets of words continually as required.
Multiple words within sets are included in double quotes. Within each set of words there will be some n-tuples of words (i.e. 24 adjacent words) that contain one or more of the words in the set, but for which the formula will be required to return a negative result. Example: Set A = word 1, word2, word 3, "word1 word2 word3". (The words within a set could also be each entered in separate columns, as opposed to all included in a single cell.) The single column of text to be searched is about 10,000 rows.
I am wanting to use the above in a spreadsheet that contains data downloaded from a series of bank accounts to automatically allocate items of expenditure to one of 20 or so different categories of expenditure.
The formula will search the description field to find words that are used in the in the downloaded files from the various accounts to describe each transaction.
If a word describing travel expenditure (e.g. hotel, "holiday inn" but not "holiday travel") is found in the description of an expenditure item - the item cost will be allocated to the TRAVEL EXPENDITURE column, which is one of 20 or so different categories of expenditure.
Happy to consider a different solution if the task can be done better a different way.
Tried using a combination of INDEX/SEARCH/IF in Excel, but was not able to get a correct result. PS I am using Excel 2011 for Mac - which does not allow macros, so the solution needs to be entirely formula based.

I have a spreadsheet with 1,000 rows of data.
Each Cell in Column A has a different long text string.
I need to see which (if any) of 10 specific small text strings exist within each long text string. Depending on which small text string is found I want to return a 3 digit code. If no small text string is found I want to return "Not Found"
E.g.:
- Cell A2 contains "randomtext,randomtext,APPLE,randomntext"
- I want to see if Cell A2 contains any of the words APPLE, ORANGE, CARROT.
- I want to return "APP", "ORG", "CAR" or "Not Found"
Q: What is the most elegant way to accomplish this within a single formula that I could paste into each cell in Column B?

I have a dataset of shifts and want to compare each shift that needs to be filled to a list of requests for time off (vacation, etc).
For one cell the code is: =IF(ISERROR(SEARCH(B1, A1), 0,1)
Where A1 is the column of requests in comma delimited forme (ie: "AB,CD,EF").
Where B1 is the column containing the person assigned to shift 1 (ie: "AB")
In this case, would return a "1" as no error was returned, as AB was found in the list. Here "1" would represent a schedule conflict.
Without creating many cells for each shift- there are 20 shifts- can I create an array or string together this type of "SEARCH" function?

An original text string entry appearing in an Excel cell would be:
"N7C Neuroprotective J5Z Antiviral, other M2Z Antiarthritic, other J5A Antiviral, anti-HIV"
I need to extract N7C, J5Z, M2Z and J5A from this string and list these alphanumeric values in separate cells adjacent to the original text string. The challenge is that these alphanumeric references may appear in different positions within the original string with no fixed value e.g. a "," separating them. The alphanumeric references may also be 3 or 4 characters in length and there may be different numbers of alphanumeric references in the original string.
Another example would be (very different from the first):
"T2Z Recombinant, other K5B Radio-chemoprotective J3Z Antibacterial, other D3A Vulnerary A10C Symptomatic antidiabetic K6Z Anticancer, other R8A Antiasthma B6A Septic shock treatment I1Z Immunostimulant, other S1Z Ophthalmological R8B Antiallergic, non-asthma M1A1 Anti-inflammatory"
You can see that in this further example "A10C" & "M1A1" are 4 character alphanumeric strings wheras the others feature 3 characters.

I have 2 columns ,A and B, in a table and text strings in C. Each table row A1 and B1 needs to be compared and matched with the text string C:C. Only if both, A1 and B1, are found in the same string, say C5, it has to return A1&B1. If not, return "Not Found".
Several Obsticles:
1. A and B are text and number
2. C is text with different numbers saved as text and words all mixed up
3. There is no defined format for the text, it is different in each string
A

I have a workbook that contains 18 sheets of data. These worksheets are named according to their respective client names (AAA Shine, Fern Barn, Oracle, etc. for example). On each of these sheets, is a column (Column B), that has a salesperson's name in it (Fred, Joe, Ted, Anne... there are about 10 names total). On each sheet, there are corresponding values for the revenue from that account for each month of the year. Those values appear in Column L (Jan), M(Feb), N(Mar),... W(Dec).
What I would like to have is formula that will look at each sheet, find all the instances of Fred for January, sum them, and report them in a single cell on a different sheet I have called "Summary". The end result will be a total revenue from all customers, for each sales person, by month, in one summary sheet.

The problem - I'm trying to find a formula that will find text between 2 characters with unlimited instances in a single string and combine the found text to a single string. The character enclosing the text i'm after will likely be a % symbol. This formula would then be replicated down 5000-10000 rows.
eg. 1 - This is %an% example %sentence% to show what I %am% looking for
eg. 2 - This %is another% example of what I %need%
eg. 1 answer - ansentenceam
eg. 2 answer - is anotherneed
Ideally this would not use a macro as it will be applied to an ever expanding data set but I realize that may not be possible.

I am trying to identify the row(s) where a match occurs when there can be multiple occurrences of the match.
A
B
C
1
john brown
Brown
True
2
Cathy Smith
3
Brown excavating company
4
XYZ Corp
5
Brown Advisors Inc.
The first test I ran in cell C1 with the information above was to determine if "Brown" was located in the range of A1:A5 using formula:
=IF(ISNUMBER(MATCH("*"&B1&"*",A1:A5,0))=TRUE,"True","False")
In the case of the word "Brown" it occurs in the range of A1:A5 three times, so the result of the above formula would be "True"
Now what I would like to do is return the locations, in this case the row number(s), where the word brown is contained range of A1:A5 because in the case of the word Brown, it occurs three separate times in the range of A1:A5. I would like the resulting value of the formula in this case to be "1, 3, 5" indicating the word Brown occurs in rows 1, 3, and 5. The formula also needs to work in case there is only one match as well.
I tried using the below array formula:
={MATCH(FALSE,ISERROR(SEARCH(B1,'Working List of Vendors'!$A$1:$A$5)),0)}
But it would only return the first occurrence of the match which in this case would be row 1, or "1"
