Open, Edit, Save Macro - Various Files
May 22, 2006
i've got the code below, and if you notice the directory and file line, I want a loop that'll do what the macro below does, but also for files j1k2-j1k200. I'm hoping there's a macro that'll be able to do this, as I don't want to have to copy, paste and edit the same macro below 200 times!
Application. ScreenUpdating = False ' turn off the screen updating
Set wb = Workbooks.Open("C:Uni StuffStocks_J20j1ka.xls", False, False)
Sheets("Sheet1").Select
Range("B6:S6").Select
Selection.Replace What:="]w1", Replacement:="]w2", LookAt:=xlPart, _
SearchOrder:=xlByRows, MatchCase:=False, SearchFormat:=False, _
ReplaceFormat:=False
wb.Close True ' close the source workbook saving any changes
Set wb = Nothing ' free memory
Application.ScreenUpdating = True ' turn on the screen updating
End Sub

I'm trying to set up a macro so that: in column C I will see the current (old) links being used by the workbookin column D I will input the new links I want to use in the workbookthe macro will open all those files in column Dthe macro will then replace the current (old) links with those listed in column D
I have the following so far, but something doesn't seem to be working - it gets as far as opening the first new file but doesn't open any others and doesn't change any links (although I've tested the part to change links separately and this seemed to work ok).
Sub linked_sheets()
Dim LinkedBooks As Variant
Dim i As Long
LinkedBooks = ThisWorkbook.LinkSources()
For i = LBound(LinkedBooks) To UBound(LinkedBooks)
Cells(i + 3, 3) = LinkedBooks(i)

I am trying to use a shell command to dig into a specified directory (and ideally all sub-directories) and open every pdf file and re-save with security settings changed (adding a password to prevent printing). I can't seem to get the shell command to run from where it is:
Option Explicit
Sub OpenPDFFilesAndSave()
'opens every pdf file in a directory
Dim FSO As Object, Fld As Object, Fil As Object
Dim MainFolderName As String, i As Integer
Dim RetVal As Variant
Set FSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
MainFolderName = "C:Test"
Set Fld = FSO.GetFolder(MainFolderName)
For Each Fil In Fld.Files
i = i + 1
RetVal = Shell("C:Program FilesAdobeAcrobat 7.0
_&AcrobatAcrobat.exe MainFolderName & " " & Fil. Name")
Next
'have to add save the file, and change the print settings but not figured that out yet

Is there a way to convert all files in folder, in this case, xml in excel format to xls without open them?
I recorded the macro below, but this needs to "Open" and "SaveAs" the current file in folder and there are a few thousands of xml files in folder.
I was wondering if through some ADO or VBA code this can be done without open the files in order to save resources and get the work done faster?
Code:
Sub Convert_XML_to_XLS()
Workbooks.Open Filename:="C:MyPathInputFile.xml"
ActiveWorkbook.SaveAs Filename:="C:MyPathInputFile.xlsx" _
, FileFormat:=xlOpenXMLWorkbook, CreateBackup:=False '
End Sub

What I would like to know is.. if there is a method in which i can copy these values from column A to a text file every hour...
The range of cells containing values in Column A also varies every hour.
Also, the old values in the text file needs to get deleted before the new values are updated every hour.

I have 40 files in one folder which I named it as "CA" + month's name that I am working on. I need to do analyse these files monthly and save it under new folder. how do I automatically save them in new folder and name them for that particular month. Also, each file has worksheet which has one cell as "Aug-07" and the cell next to it has number of that month that is "08". How do I automatically change this also based on the name of the file, because file name month and month in the cell are the same.

I have a number of spreadsheets in a folder called country (each sheet is the name of a region). These sheets are linked to another sheet called master which is in another folder.
The regional sheets all have a list of wrap codes and pull details specific to each code from the master sheet. All wrap codes for all sheets are stored in the master, details for wrpas are manually entered here as well as any other associated information.
The link is kept by way of an index match formula used to populate information from the master for all wrap codes in the regional sheet.
Each of the regional sheets act as a report for a specific region and the master is the main source. Every week we need to open the regional sheets (some reside in different folders/subfolders) update the index match formulas in the sheet so that the data is refreshed and then save as a new file with data as values to another folder for reporting.
I am looking for a code that can automatically update all of the excel sheets in a given folder and then save them to a new folder automatically.
I have very very limited knowledge of VB (did make a hello world dialog box once) and am stuck as to any way to automate this process.

My question is, do I even have to click on it? Can I get the macro to automatically open the file. Note the "NewestFolderInThePath" is a function that open me up to the "newest" created folder in the path. From there I double click file.

I have some daily text files in a folder (so about 30 of them each month), which in the end of month, I need to open them up in excel, format them so that I can use the information for my analysis.
I would like to create a macro, to quickly open them all up at once and save them each individually in .xls or .xlsm format.
I am new to VBA and after some research online, I was able to have the files open with the following code. but now I don't know how to proceed further to save them one by one with the same name but in .xls or .xlsm format.
Sub Opentxtfiles()
Dim MyFolder As String
Dim myfile As String

I use a macro that saves my activesheets in text(tab delimited).
I am trying to find how to save my worksheets as tab delimited files without having to open the notepad later, in order to press the backspace button. Just to clarify more, if a sheet has 15 rows of data, the tab delimited file will be created with 16. Is there a way to save the actual number of rows in the text file or this is a default operation in excel that cannot be changed in any way?

If i have a folder with multiple csv files in it, all with different names can i get a macro to open all these files.
I know that i can if they are always the same name each time i run the macro but what i would like to do is to change the name of the csv files daily.
The reason is because i could have upto 50 different files a day.
So basically i'd like to click a button and open all the contents of the folder regardless of the name of the files inside.

How can I code a Macro in Excel to search in a preset directory and pull out, aka open/run a certain Adobe Acrobat .pdf file automatically? Is this even possible to code in Excel Macro or is it out of its scope of what Excel VB code can do?
Right now I have a very repetitive task where depending on the value of a certain field in Excel I have to search for the right/corresponding .pdf file and open it up do work in the .pdf as well as the Excel worksheet... I have to do like hundreds of this. So is there a quick way to code in Excel that a certain value will open a certain file named .pdf acrobat file? Can other programs/files be called upon and ran/started/opened from within Excel Macro?

I am attempting to write an Excel macro that will be stored in a file called MacroFile. The purpose of the macro is to
1. Follow a hyperlink to an Excel file saved in a SharePoint type enviroment
2. Save the file to my laptop directory My Documents.
Below is the code I have written. The code is following the hyperlink and saving a file but is the focus file is incorrect.
Here is what happens:
1. Open up MacroFile and run macro
2. Hyperlinked file LinkedFile_1.xls is opened
3. File NewFile_1 is saved but contains the info from MacroFile
4. Hyperlinked file LinkedFile_2.xls is opened
5. File NewFile_2 is saved but contains the info from LinkedFile_1
6. Hyperlinked file LinkedFile_3.xls is opened
7. File NewFile_3 is saved but contains the info from LinkedFile_2
The files created are named correctly but have the wrong data in them. I need to know how to control which file is considered ActiveWorkbook.
Sub LinkAndCopy()
Application. ScreenUpdating = False
Application.DisplayAlerts = False

I have several workbooks in folder C:Parts &Service where the data needs to be updated with downloaded files in C:extract
I have a macro that allows me to open up a workbook in c:Parts & SVC Sales. One opened I then need to select the appropriate file in C:extract
VB:
Sub Update_Workbooks()
ChDir ("C:Parts & SVC Sales")
Application.DisplayAlerts = False
[Code].....
The are two types of workbooks in C:Parts & SVC Sales "Parts Sales" and "service Sales" . The branch name is at the beginning of the file name
Instead of opening up each file individually in C:Parts & SVC Sales and selecting the appropriate csv file in C:/extract using the Update_Macro, I would like the macro to open up all the files in the directory C:Parts & SVC Sales and update each of these with the appropriate csv file in C:extract
The name and description type must match the csv files and then updated eg Br1 Parts Sales to be updated with csv file Br1 Salesperson 01-07-2014 (the date in the file is not important for match the parts file -the branch name for eg BR1 and "salesperson is) i.e Br1 Parts Sales must select BR1 Salesperson 01-07-2014
BR1 Service Sales Must be updated with Br1 Service order repair register.csv (branch name for eg Br1 in this instance name and Service order repair register (pertain to Service Sales) is important)
Br2 Parts Sales to be updated with Br2 Salesperson
Br2 Service Sales must be updated with Br2 Service order repair register etc

I have the following macro that is linked to a button.
There is also a function that is called to check to see if the file is already open.
These macros & functions work properly.
Basically, the Case statements check the extension of the file to be opened and then calls the correct macro to open that particular file.
I have shown the macro that is called by the Case statement that has the extension .xls . . . Excel
I want to keep these Case statements as I always want Excel files opened in new instances of Excel.
What I need is when the existing case statements do not find an extension that is listed, I want code added to this macro that can open any type of file, such as files with other types of extensions or without extensions.
My son suggested that I should try to get a macro that could open the file using the RUN command found under the Start Button. Sounds good to me.

I need to have a workbook (all of them in a folder, ideally) refresh in the middle of the night. The file is large so the refresh takes a full minute. I know I can't auto refresh a closed workbook (pretty sure anyway), and I can't leave the workbook open for various reasons.
So I'm thinking I could have a macro in an open excel (it kicks off on open) that will open a particular workbook elsewhere (the one I need refreshed), open it, refresh it and close/save it. Ideally it would do this for the entire group of workbooks in the folder but I'd be happy to start with just one. I would like to set it to occur every twelve hours (so at midnight, say, this would occur - I would just have to leave the workbook with the macro in it open on a computer so that it runs and completes this task every night).

I have 5 Excel files. The first one is Main, and the other 4 are subfiles, namely A1, A2, A3 & A4. I have a need to open Main, then click a button to start a Macro (in Main) which will do the following, sequentially:
1. open A1
2. run a Macro in A1
3. close and save A1.
4. open A2
5. run a Macro in A2
...
12 close and save A4.
The files A1..A4 are a file server and being shared. If they're being used by another user, it cannot be saved - so I would have to skip it and continue with the next A. It would be great if start Excel, open Main, and run the Macro in Main fully automatically.
