Saving Solver Objective Function Value With A Macro
Mar 23, 2013
I have written this macro below to run solver multiple times. It saves the solver results on a line and then inserts a new line for the next solver run.
I would like to save the final Objective Function Value from solver in each line as well as its result. Is there any way to do this?
Sub run()
'
' run Macro
' run solver
'
' Keyboard Shortcut: Ctrl+n
'
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
Range("B4:T13").Select
[Code] .........

At work, we have a spreadsheet that uses SOLVER.XLA in a macro. It works fine in Excel '97 but in Excel 2003 it simply does nothing. The code is
s = Application.LibraryPath & "solversolver.XLA"
On Error Resume Next
Workbooks.Open filename:=s
Application.ExecuteExcel4Macro String:="SOLVER.XLA!SOLVER.RESET()"
Application.ExecuteExcel4Macro String:="SOLVER.XLA!SOLVER.OK( PLOT!R46C4,2,0,(PLOT!R13C12:R14C12))"
Application.ExecuteExcel4Macro String:="SOLVER.XLA!SOLVER.OPTIONS(100,100,0.000001,FALSE,FALSE,2,1,1,0.05,TRUE)"
Application.ExecuteExcel4Macro String:="SOLVER.XLA!SOLVER.OK(PLOT!R46C4,2,0,(PLOT!R13C12:R14C12))"
Application.ExecuteExcel4Macro String:="SOLVER.XLA!SOLVER.SOLVE()"
ActiveSheet. Protect DrawingObjects:=False, Contents:=True, Scenarios _
:=True, password:="sigma"
It gives no error message, it simply does not do the calculations. (I took out the error handling line to make sure that there really were no errors being generated!)

In the attached file I have an example. I've used the Frequency array function to get the distribution of results from some sample result data (50 results). I want to use Solver to change the Bin values to what they would need to be to provide a desired distribution, such as in the example file. I've tried setting the target cell at either the sum of the frequency results or sum of their percentage distribution (100%), and set contraints either frequency results or percentage distribution respectively, along with Bin contraints being consectutively larger (requirement of the Frequency function). Alas, I can't get a solution, only the response of "Solver could not find a feasible solution".

I have a written a small sub to run solver. However, I need to run a secondary sub at each solver iteration. The secondary sub I want to run is called “BypassGoal”.
My code currently looks like:
Sub OperatingPt()
Dim WrkBk As Workbook
Dim WrkSht1 As Worksheet
Set WrkBk = ThisWorkbook
Set WrkSht1 = WrkBk.Worksheets("Engine")
Dim Mode As String
Dim CellTarget As String
Dim CellRange As String
WrkSht1.Activate
WrkSht1. Cells(30, 2).Value = 2
CellTarget = "H14"
CellRange = "B30"
SolverReset
SolverOptions Iterations:=3000, Precision:=0.000001, AssumeNonNeg:=True, Derivatives:=2, StepThru:=True ....................

I created two macros to achieve my objective. I used the "record a macro" function, which probably creates very ugly codes. My first code formats raw data in a certain fashion so that it can be easily extracted; I understand this code fairly well and have been able to make alterations to it with ease.
The second macro takes values from the formatted data and plugs them into a table. Unfortunately, the code that Excel wrote is very confusing to me.
Essentially, the data follows a pattern (new entries occur every 14 rows), but Excel's automated code is tedious to program. Here's an example:
Columns("R:R").Select
With Selection.Interior
.ColorIndex = 11
.Pattern = xlSolid
End With
Range("T2").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Acct"
Range("U2").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Org Name"
Range("V2").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Pmt Type"...............

how can I generate a user defined function(UDF) that triggers excel's solver? I have a set of 5 constraints and one objective that is to be maximized. I want to perform a senstivity analysis for my objective changing these 5 constraints. So I want the UDF to take all the 5 constraints and return me the optimized value (obtained from excel's solver) for the objective cell.

I get this error : Compile error : Sub or Function not defined. I found out that this might be caused by the solver not being referenced. But, this is fixed now but I still get the same error message.
I'm using Excel 2007 - Windows.
Here is the code :
Sub Macro1()
Dim i As Integer
Dim j As Integer
j = 4
For i = 1 To 4000
If ActiveSheet.Cell(i, 12).Value = 1 Then
ActiveSheet.Cell(j, 15).Value = ActiveSheet.Cell(i, 2)

I have a cell, D5, which is the sum of three other cells, A5 B5 and C5. (all currently empty). Cells A1 through C4 are filled with various numbers.
What I've been trying to do is use solver to say: Make D5 equal 200, do it by manipulating only A5 B5 and C5, and make it subject to the constraint that A5 must equal a value selected from A1:A4, and B5 must equal a value from B1:B4, and C5 ...etc. I have deliberately set it up so that there is only one solution.
I was doing fine until trying to create the constraints. How can I make a constraint that says "this cell" must equal "one of the following cells"? And if I can't do that, is there an alternate method of achieving the same result?

I have a spreadsheet that imports data, manipulates it then deletes 2 of the sheets then saves the file under a different name to the network. Is there any way to save this new worksheet without it storing the macros - so when the user open it, only the data is there and they get no prompt to enable macros?

When I run a group of macros for some reason after the marcro runs and I hit F2 excel crashes.
I have figured out that it is one of the marcros that makes the excel crash. It is only when I run the solver application. The code is below. Any thoughts why hitting F2 after running this marcro would crash the machine?

A single macro that I can assign to a button and, when clicked, will compute 3 solver solutions instantly without the solver boxes popping up.
My problems
I am having trouble with the "ValueOf:=" part. In my code below, I am trying to tell it to go to either cell b14, b15, or b16, select that value which will be a number, and use that number as the "ValueOf". The ValueOf is the number I am ultimately trying to achieve using Solver. Range("B##").select doesn't work but I need to somehow select that number in that cell and tell solver to use that number when computing.
If I manually type a number for the "ValueOf:="0.952975095" it will compute it correctly but manually typing this number in each time defeats the purpose of creating this macro. The whole purpose of this macro is so I don't have to manually type in numbers.
Also, recording a macro with multiple solver steps hasn't worked. When the macro is ran with multiple Solver solutions, it only computes one solution... the last one. I think the last data is stored in the Solver application but I'm not sure how to erase it, and start a new solver setup. Anyways, you all would know better than I would.
What's important?
It needs to compute in a certain order. In this order: Cells D14, then D15, Finally D16. That's probably not a big deal though.
My code
Sub Macro1()
'
' Macro1 Macro
'
SolverOk SetCell:="$C$14", MaxMinVal:=3, ValueOf:=Range("B14").Select, ByChange:= _
"$D$14"
SolverSolve UserFinish:=True
SOLVERreset

Writing a macro to run SOLVER on a linear program. I have twenty tabs, each with a linear program and a solver already set up (constraints, cells to change, and cell to maximize). I would like to run a sub that will solve each tab's LP by running the tab's SOLVER...
If it makes it easier, my cell to maximize is I17, by changing B16:H16, subject to I20:I40 SolverAdd -> SolverOk -> SolverSolve

I am trying to write this macro so that I can optimize 181 outputs based on 2 inputs (columns A and B are inputs). Each row has a single output at the end of the row that I am trying to minimize. I want to be able to select as many of the rows that I want and have the code optimize each individual row. So far I can't get it to let me use variable cell references for the "ByChange:="$A$3,$B$3"." This is the hang up that is not letting me increment the macro to the next row. The macro works currently for the single selected cell, but until I can vary the ByChange portion, I can't automate it.

Is there a way to prevent the Workbook_SheetChange event macro from triggering when I run Excel's Solver?
The solver goes through 100 or so iterations changing multiple cells each of which seemed to trigger the Workbook_SheetChange event. If there was a Solver Run event, I could turn off application events, but as far as I know such an event does not exist.

Private Sub Workbook_BeforeClose(Cancel As Boolean)
Me.Saved = True
End Sub
Private Sub Workbook_BeforeSave(ByVal SaveAsUI As Boolean, Cancel As Boolean)
Cancel = True
End Sub
But now I also cant save the file with a macro!
ActiveWorkbook.SaveAs pathResult & "Files" & name & No & ".xls"
How can I allow the macro to save the file?

I have to use use the solver to calculate something (a mean-variance framework).
I am using the solver to minimize a cartain cell (variance) by making two cells equal through (expected return) by varying 10 cells( weights of assets), but I have to repeat this for 500+ times (for different expected returns).
Someone told me that I could best use some sort of loop through VBA. But I don't have a clue how that works.

I want to use solver program. But when solver "changes cells" i want it to trigger my pivot tables in the workbook. So i added the code to my worksheet:
Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
ThisWorkbook.RefreshAll
End Sub
So when a change occurs, all my pivot tables will get refreshed and my data will change. Is solver able to trigger this event while solving an optimization problem?

Prevent saving and allow only through Macro
I am contracting an excel template and need to stop users saving the file using “Save” or “Save As”. I am able to do this by using the private sub below:
Private Sub Workbook_BeforeClose(Cancel As Boolean)
Me.Saved = True
End Sub
Private Sub Workbook_BeforeSave(ByVal SaveAsUI As Boolean, Cancel As Boolean)
Cancel = True
End Sub
I also understand that by switching to “Designer” mode you can save the file and once re opened designer mode will be switched off. What I need is to allow saving using a macro, is there a code that I can insert in the macro to switch designer mode?

I have this analyze that is runned by a macro in one workbook, and it starts a analyzing-process in another workbook. The data is picked up in the no2 book, and returned to the first book. It is analyzing lots of workbooks, sometimes up to 1000 workbooks, it means that no2 workbook gets a new name and then saved.
I have once heard that the process could be way faster if the workbooks where the analyzes is processed through not were saved, and I actually dont need the books as long as I got the data into my first workbook.
But Im not sure what in the macro that makes it save the no2 workbook, but I would really like to speed up this process. As it is now I have to start the analyze before I go to bed, and the hopefully it's done when I wake up next morning.

Thanks for all the help so far with this issue. I seem to be getting errors after running a macro a second time. The name of the cell range is changing. I have attached the spreadsheet and I will try to be specific as possible.
Goal 1: I need to input monthly data into the Sales tab and then save it as a CSV file.
Goal 2: Re-open original xls file that has data then Run macro to create reports.
Goal 3: Save Original xls file as a clean sheet to use again next month.
Process:
1 - Insert Data into Sales tab
2 - File/Save As a CSV (Now the CSV file is open)
3 - Close CSV file and re-open the original xls file
4 - Run Macro to create reports
5 - Print Reports
6 - Manually delete current data on all tabs so I have a clean sheet for next month
7 - Save and Close
Problem:
When I open the xls file (next month) to input new data and run the reports I get a Run Time Error '1004" The Pivot Table field Name is Not Valid
I found that the Named Range of cells changed from the original:

Using excel 2003, I have a ss that uses filters and sorting. I can get to the data I want but must reopen the workbook if I want to start over and extract different information. I tried installing this VBA:
Sub CloseMe()
Application.OnTime Now + TimeValue("00:00:10"), "OpenMe"
ThisWorkbook.Close False
End Sub
Sub OpenMe()
MsgBox "I'm Back!"
End Sub
This is my first time at inserting VBA. Usually I just use keystroke macros. I have set my Excel VB Book options to: Option Explicit double clicked the sheet I was using and under general inserted the code, closed Ctrl+Q, saved workbook. When I reopened and tried to use it all I get is “I'm Back!” nothing else happens. One time it actually ran and reopened but it appeared that the workbook was saved before closing because it was still sorted. What I need is it to completely unsorted as it is when I first open it so I can start over.
