How To Adjust Width Of Columns Faster

Nov 17, 2012

1. Is there a faster way to adjust the size of the columns? I had to use my mouse to stretch the column out. This can be quiet time consuming if there are 8 columns needing to adjust to the same size. ie Col A, B,I, J needs to be the same size.

2. Can Excel determine the best size for the column? Say I need a column with data saying "yes" and "no" and a column for the letter "X" only or do I have to stretch the width of the column myself?

Excel 2003 :: Unprotected Cell Won't Allow Input On Protected Sheet

May 19, 2010

Using excel 2003, Workbook has several sheets, all sheets are protected workbook is not. I have my cells containing formulas locked, I have unlocked the other cells that require input of various data. When the user goes to type in a "unlocked" cell, (to over write the now obsolete data) it will not allow the user to delete the data, the curser remains a cross and the formula bar or the cell itself will now allow any changes.

I have double checked that the cells are unlocked. I can enter data after the last entry in the unlocked row and or column, but I want to be able to "cut or delete the data that is no longer need and begin entering data from the beginning cell of choice. I want to copy this "old" data to an archive sheet, but it will now allow me to select it.

Example: I have 6 columns starting, (a to f) the formulas are in columns e and f and start at row 4 These columns are locked and hidden. Columns a,b,c and d are unlocked for user input. All data is started from A5 which I want it to start from each time the old data is deleted and new data entered. If I place my curser on any of the cells in the e and f rows, the cursor remains a cross which is what I expect it to do, but columns a to d are doing the same thing, they are acting as if they are locked OR atleast those cells in the a to d areas which have existing data, as I can enter below.

Automatically Update A Protected Cell Based On Contents Of An Unprotected Cell

Apr 30, 2009

I am trying to find some VBA that will allow protected cells to be updated when a user enters or selects data in other cells.

For example:

Cell 'A1' starts out blank.
Cell 'B1' has a drop down to select specific items.
Cell 'C1' is the date of the order and is a locked cell.
Cell 'D1' is the date of completion and is a locked cell.
The worksheet is protected to prevent direct changes to cells C1 and D1.

If a user enters any information in A1, then C1 displays the current date.
If a user selects 'Complete' from the drop-down list in B1, then D1 displays the current date. Both of these actions are independant of one another. This format is the same for every cell in the 4 columns indicated above. I thought I was able to do this in another spreadsheet I created a year or so ago but I have not been able to figure out what I did and I do not have the spreadsheet to look at.

Adding Column Widths Of Merged Area To Match Single Column Width

Sep 19, 2012

I needed to match the width a merged area of seven columns to a single column width (for row autofitting). Adding the column unit values and setting the single column to that value produced a significantly narrower width.

The documentation mentions that the column width unit is scaled to the font type and size and the absolute width is given in points.

This is set by the normal style setting in Excel Options or by VBA application.standardfontsize = 8 (in this case).

For instance, ten columns of Arial font 8 at 8.5 units you would think to be equivalent to a single column of 85 units.
In points, the difference is 420 vs. 386.25, or 33.75 points.

Well, the standard character zero has a width at this setting of 4.5 points and 1 unit is 8.25 points, leaving 3.75 points for margins.

Then (10-1) margins allowances time 3.75 points resolves the difference.

Determining the margin allowances is straightforward, and reveals that the gradation with size is stepped by MS design.
For instance, sizes up to 11 use 3.75 points for margins and increasing points for characters (except between 9 & 10).
Sizes 12 through 18 use 5.25 points, 20 & 22 use 6.75, 24 & 26 use 8.25, etc.

I have created a table for this purpose, however I rarely use a "normal" other than 8, so I can probably use that set in programming.

Adjust Worksheet Placement Based On Dropdown Selected

I have created validated dropdown, which in turn I have used for conditional formatting to highlight specific consecutive rows based on the dropdown.

Is it possible for the worksheet to be positioned based on the dropdown chosen, so that the highlighted rows are visible without having to manually scroll down, looking for the highlighted rows?

If dropdown chosen highlights rows 50-60, I would like the page to automatically show rows 50-60 (not necessarily hide the others, but at least scroll to rows 50-60).

VBA Listbox Column Width?

I have tried this:

listbox1.columncount = 2

Or:

mystring = len(activrcell.value) or refer to the excel column width

listbox1.columnwidth(mystring;mystring2)

but I get an error message.

Or max of list len or something. The default width is to big and specifying the length could make it to small.

Now I'm entering in some text into them, and I noticed that when I added in 2 digit numbers, the column width expanded a little bit. Is there any way to lock the dimensions?

Is there a way that the width would automatically adjust even as I change the values of the given cells; meaning, if a word is long, the width will automatically adjust "longer", if a word is short, then it will automatically adjust "shorter".

I know how the "AutoFit Column Width" works but I don't want to press that every time my values change (words becoming shorter or longer).
