Remove / Replace ONLY FIRST Occurrence Of First Character In All Rows Of Column?

Jul 30, 2013

I need to remove the first character in each row of a column, but only its first occurrence in each row. For instance:

Say, column 2 has following data (lots of rows, by the way):

First Text" - "blabla"
=SomeText2 = "blabla"
SomeText3 = "blabla"
=SomeText4 = "blabla"
-SomeText5 --- "blabla"
........
....

I would like to use the VBA code to remove ONLY the FIRST occurrence of the FIRST character specified (either "=" or "-") in each row in that column, so that I get:

First Text" - "blabla"
SomeText2 = "blabla"
SomeText3 = "blabla"
SomeText4 = "blabla"
SomeText5 --- "blabla"
......
...and so on...

I tried to use this:

Code:
Columns(2).Cells.Replace What:="-", Replacement:="", LookAt:=xlPart, _
SearchOrder:=xlByRows, MatchCase:=False, SearchFormat:=False, _
ReplaceFormat:=False
Columns(2).Cells.Replace What:="=", Replacement:="", LookAt:=xlPart, _
SearchOrder:=xlByRows, MatchCase:=False, SearchFormat:=False, _
ReplaceFormat:=False
but it replaces ALL occurrences of "=" and "-" and that is not what I need.

I also tried this code:

Code:
With Range("B:B")
.Value = Replace(.Value, "=", "", 1, 1)
End With

But It doesn't work either.

Excel 2003 :: How To Remove Characters To The Right Of Last Occurrence Of Special Character

Mar 30, 2011

I have a column of text where I need to remove all the characters to the right of the last occurance of a special character.

I think a process like reading from right to left, look for the first occurance of the special character, and return the characters to the left of this position.

If I can determine the position of the last occurance of the special character, I could use the LEFT function.

The SEARCH function is close. It finds the position of the first occurance of text inside text but it reads from left to right. I need to read from right to left.

Another approach is to examine each character one by one from right to left. If the character is not the special character, delete it. When the character is the special character, delete it and stop the process.

There is no consistency in the text. The total lengths vary. The number of times the special character occurs in the text vary. The number of characters to the right or left of the last special character vary.

I much prefer not to have the solution be some VBA because I need to share it with others who are even less capable than I am. We are using Excel 2003.

Finding Nth Occurrence Of Zero And Non-Zero Character

Aug 24, 2012

Let's say I have numeric nonzero and zero data in A2:X2. How do I find the first, second, third, second-to-last, last occurrence of a nonzero or zero value. I am able to find the first nonzero value by using Match(true, A2:X20, 0) to find the relative position, and then using index to find the value. This method also works with the first zero value, but I can't seem to find how to do the second, third, nth occurrence.

Using FIND To Locate Second Occurrence Of Character

7900 Personnel:7980 PR taxes:7985 Medicare

I can use the FIND function to find the first occurrence of ":" and therefore select everything to the right of it, but how do I locate the second occurrence of ":"?

I want to segregate the 7985 Medicare. What if the data varies, i.e. some rows have one occurrence of ":" and others have two?

7900 Personnel: 7970 Bonus. I always want to segregate the last 4-digit account number and description.

Replace Numerical Data Column A, 11K Rows! VBA

Feb 8, 2009

Need to sort my data in column A which contains a long list of numerical data. To do this manually using copy and paste would be easy, but not viable because of the large amount of data.

The attached PDF file illustrates the data. I wish to replace each date of dirth entry in column A (one D.O.B. in each cell / row, expressed as YYYYMMDD) with the client identifier number (format 937XXXX) a couple of cells above. And at the same time delete the row containing the client reference (or its contents). The data in column A should retain the same relationship to the data in the other columns (B,C). it may require a short piece of VBA code.

Replace Specific Character ONLY If Its LAST In The Sheet

Nov 27, 2013

Switched to Excel after using OpenOffice and I'm stuck on knowing what an old a 'find and replace' formula would be in Excel. It would remove a specific character (or word) ONLY if it was the last characters in a cell.

The old find and replace for open office:
Find: (.*)/$
Replace: $1

It's not that important now to delete a word, mainly the last slash '/' ONLY if it's the last character e.g. this data has 2 rows with a '/' as the last character

website.com/page
website.com/page/
website.com/page/page/

Running my old find and replace formula would remove the last slashes, but leave the others

website.com/page
website.com/page
website.com/page/page

Need simple replacement to the find and replace but a formula is also right.

Unwanted Character, Can Not Search And Replace

Dec 18, 2007

I have a sheet that I often have to edit and import into SQL database.

I have no control over the format of the sheet given to me and it seems that something has changed causing me the following problem.

When I try to import the Data it’s showing ten times as many items than are actually there.

The problem I think is in a text column. I’ve tested this by using an old column from a previous sheet and pasting this into the new sheet and I can import it ok.

What I seem to have is a rectangular box character but I’m not sure what it is.
I can copy and past it into Notepad as it is, but pasted into Word it seems to be a carriage Return.

So whether it’s an actual charter or not I’m not sure.

Are there any tools out there so I can hover over characters in Excel to see what it is! So at least I can be sure what I’m trying to Search and Replace?
