Change The Name Of A Folder With Ruining All Links

Dec 18, 2013

The CFO wants to change the name of the top folder on our network drive at work.

I have literally thousands of files in different folders within this top folder, and changing the name of the top folder is going to cause hundreds of thousands of reference errors.

Is there a best way to protect these links, other than to find+replace for hours and hours?

List Of Links To All Files In Folder

Mar 14, 2008

We use Excel 2003 and 2007 to track labor data for a field service company. The field tech's complete daily forms and the office staff copy/paste this data into weekly billing worksheets. They use naming conventions to show the jobs and dates in the file name (Daily Labor - Job1 - 031308.xls and Weekly Labor - week ending 3-16.xls. What I would like to do is link the daily data to the weekly forms as they come in. Is there some way to do this when the job names and the dates are always different? Can I tell Excel to expect data files based on the naming conventions as in the Weekly is named "Weekly Labor - Week Ending 3-16.xls so data files named LaborJob1310.csv, laborjob1311.csv would automatically update the weekly sheet? I can put these in a folder and link them, but I don't know how to provide an easy way to do this for the upcoming week.

Force Links To Reference Linked Workbook Network Folder

Apr 4, 2008

The situation is that I have created a workbook in a network folder: xprojectsexcelclientAApril
umbers

The workbook links to a few other workbooks on the same network, but in the parent folder: xprojectsexcelclientAApril

The problem occurs when my colleagues have to updates the links in the main workbook, because they have not mapped the network drive in the same way as I have. The problem is NOT the prefix, but the fact that they have a more direct link to the network folder. My collages have mapped the folder like: xclientAApril
Is there a way where I can make the links in the workbook, so they don't depend on the entire string, but only on the fact that it is in the parent folder?

Change (Browse For Folder) To Automatically Locate Sub Folder

Jul 23, 2012

I am creating a document for work that automatically generates hyperlinks to pdf files in a given sub folder. Currently I have a section of code that opens a window to choose the folder location.

Code:
'Prompt user to select a directory
Do
Problem = False
Set ShellApp = CreateObject("Shell.Application"). _
Browseforfolder(0, "Please choose a folder", 0, "c:\")

On Error Resume Next

[Code] ........

What I actually want is to not have the window open, but excel automatically choose the sub folder location.

The directory looks like this
Z:ClientProjectDRAWINGS-2 RECORD COPIESPDF

The xlsm file is stored in the DRAWINGS folder, and I need it to point to the PDF folder.

Dynamically Change Links?

May 21, 2014

I have a link

='S:2014DomesticATL[ATL-BP Eval-2014-04.xls]Business Partner Evaluation'!F$13

Now i have to compile 3 years of data for 200 airports so changing the month and year for every airport would be a challenge. I can do Replace all and change the year and month but instead of that i was thinking if i could have the year and month on one row and connect the links to that cell so that whenever i drag the cell my link changes

im looking at

2014DomesticATL[ATL-BP Eval-",D2",.xls]Business Partner Evaluation'!F$13

where in D2 i will have 2014-04 . But this formula doesnt seem to work. Is there anyway i can do this ?

Jul 29, 2014

I have workbook #1 sheet1 that is linked to a master workbook sheet1. The master workbook has a bunch of sheets. I need to make copy of my sheet1 in workbook #1 and change the links from a sheet1 in my master workbook.

So for example, if my worksheet in workbook#1 is linked to master workbook in worksheet1 tab1, i want to make a copy of my sheet in workbook#1 but now have it linked to tab2 in the master workbook.

I know i can just highlight and do a find replace right? Is there a faster way to do this because i have a bunch of sheets.

Change/Edit External Links

Dec 12, 2007

Is it possible to update external links on a worksheet via running a macro?
I have a worksheet where some cells have external links to other files, and every month I have to scroll through and do the typing in order to have everything up and running.
A typical cell has formulas like =[E:ReportsAug-2007.xls]Data!F25
Another cell =[E:ReportsAug-2007.xls]Data!F43
and so on.

Every new month I actually have to replace all [E:ReportsAug-2007.xls] occurrences with for example [E:ReportsSep-2007.xls]. So, is it possible to have a macro which opens a textbox of which i can type the new month 'Sep', so that when the macro runs I save all the typing?

I hope that I am making sense.

I am using Windows Vista with Excel 2007. The files will all be within the same file folder, however, there are hundereds of files so I won't be able to open them all for the indirect to work.

Excel 2003 :: Extract Variable Rows Of Cells From Files In A Folder To Existing File In Folder

Mar 15, 2013

I need a macro in a workbook to look at all the files in the same folder that have "*att*.xls" in the name and determine and copy from the range A15:W515 only the rows that have data in at least columns A, C and D. Each file will vary as to how many rows there will be and there are more than the files with "*att*.xls" in the folder. The data will be on the only worksheet in each file and the worksheet is named "G2WAttendee_xls" the data from all the files need to be copied to the file called "Consolidated webinar reports.xls" (I am using Excel 2003) and to a sheet called "Attendance Data" and added to the end of the last paste.

At the start of the macro the current file "Consolidated webinar report.xls" should be saved to a sub folder of the current directory and have the date saved added to the name. The sub folder is called "Completed reports". The data in the original file on worksheet "Attendance Data" should be deleted.

At the end of the process all the files that have had data copied from them should be moved to the sub folder "Attendance reports consolidated" (This could be done as each file is closed if that is easier).

I have headings in row 1 of the "Attendance Data" worksheet that match the headings in the various files in the folder (which will always be in row 14 of the individual "*att*.xls" files).

The folder with all the files and the "Consolidated webinar report.xls" file is at path "Z:P and S MEvaluationsWebinar series 2012-13TB".

VBA Code To Find A Folder Name Within Parent Folder That Contains Defined Text

Jul 23, 2014

I have an Excel VBA Macro for creating/logging drawing numbers. Each drawing belongs to a job number. Each job number has a folder name containing the job number followed by a description (ie 999999 - bracket assembly) for storing drawing pdf's. The job number is only known as a 6 figure number in the drawing creation process BUT for the PDF saving process it is a string value...as my example above

I have to change my process by pre-creating the Job Number folder, then have the macro look for the appropriate folder by searching the parent folder for a sub folder containing the job number (always the first 6 figures).

I want to insert in my macro some code that searches...

The parent folder for a folder containing the job number. The macro value for the parent folder is P:engineeringdrawings (this never changes). the macro value for the job number is iOpenair (it's an entry that is entered as start the macro). Imagine the value for the job number is "999999"...so the search would be for "999999*.*" The code needs to search the parent folder, find the folder name that begins with a six digit number. Capture the complete name of the folder and store that name as a Dim value that I can call up elsewhere in my macro.

Locate Folder From Part Of Folder Name

May 23, 2007

if it's possible to use XlDialogOpen to open up a folder that you only have part of the name.

For example, say you have the following folder paths:

C:Main FolderSubfolder1Smith,Billy 2413
C:Main FolderSubfolder1Brown,Charlie Ray 2416
C:Main FolderSubfolder1Bunny,B 3619
C:Main FolderSubfolder1Fudd,E-G 1864

What I'm hoping to do is just look for the 4 digit number on the end finding that folder name and opening it up. The name conventions before the 4-digit serial number are quite random. Sometimes it includes their full first name, other times it's just an initial for the first name and other times there are other characters included in the name. The one thing that is constant is the 4 digit serial number on the end.

how I could get the Open dialog box to pop up and have the chosen folder number open?

UDF Links

Jun 15, 2009

I've been having a small problem with my UDFs. I'm sorry if it's already been asked but english isn't my first language and I don't know the proper search key works to find my problem.

Basically, I've been programming functions destined for a single workbook so I don't use addins. If I write a function called J13F and I try to write that in one of my excel sheets, it generally doesn't work. Excel makes me write it like this:

='myfilename.xls!'J13F.J13F(Sheet!F21)

However, sometimes when I close then open my file, this won't work and excel will make me use my function normally: J13F(Sheet!F21)

I'd like to be able to use the function normally in every sheet in my workbook, how can I do that?

Using Links In VBA

Feb 7, 2010

I am using several spreadsheets which are currently linked to specific cells in other workbooks. These are updated through dating the links whenever needed. However I would rather not use formulas in the cells at all and only have value updated by using the link function within VBA. I cannot find how to do this though.

Just to reiterate. I currently have cells that have"='\server01main_foldersubfolderDocument.xls" for example. The formula syntax is not exactly right but in the spreadsheets it is so you get the idea. These links are updated (when the workbooks are not open) when the links are update via the edit menu or a macro which does the same thing.

What I want to do is have no formula in the cells (only values) and use the feature that takes the value from the other workbooks but in VBA exclusively. This is what I have not been able to find out how to do.

Any thoughts why this should be the case? I've tried it in the past and it's always worked fine.

Updating Links All At Once

Apr 11, 2008

if it would be possible to update all the links in a workbook at once. For example, say I have a worksheet which is linking to a file named something like 4-6-08 (1) and 4-6-08 (2) and so on with the number in brackets being from 1-21. Now say I have the same thing for 4-7 and 4-8 and 4-9. Now I want to change the links to point to 4-10,11,12,13 instead of 6,7,8, and 9. But still there are 21 copies of each sheet. Is there any way to change all the sources at once so all the 4-6's could become 4-10's and 4-7's to 4-11's?
