Fastest Way To Change Links Between Sheets
Jul 29, 2014
I have workbook #1 sheet1 that is linked to a master workbook sheet1. The master workbook has a bunch of sheets. I need to make copy of my sheet1 in workbook #1 and change the links from a sheet1 in my master workbook.
So for example, if my worksheet in workbook#1 is linked to master workbook in worksheet1 tab1, i want to make a copy of my sheet in workbook#1 but now have it linked to tab2 in the master workbook.
I know i can just highlight and do a find replace right? Is there a faster way to do this because i have a bunch of sheets.

I have copied and then pasted & linked numerous cells from one sheet to another within the same workbook. When I copy the 2 sheets (Edit>Move or Copy Sheet>Create Copy) the linked cells on the duplicates remain linked to the original sheet. How can I copy the 2 sheets and have the cells on the copied sheet be linked to the copied sheets and not the original?

I have a link
='S:2014DomesticATL[ATL-BP Eval-2014-04.xls]Business Partner Evaluation'!F$13
Now i have to compile 3 years of data for 200 airports so changing the month and year for every airport would be a challenge. I can do Replace all and change the year and month but instead of that i was thinking if i could have the year and month on one row and connect the links to that cell so that whenever i drag the cell my link changes
im looking at
2014DomesticATL[ATL-BP Eval-",D2",.xls]Business Partner Evaluation'!F$13
where in D2 i will have 2014-04 . But this formula doesnt seem to work. Is there anyway i can do this ?

I work for a production hombuilder and I am developing a schedule to track community development. We have over 20 communities that we will need to use the sheet that I have devised to track progress. Is there a way that I can somehow create a link to an individual sheet within the workbook for easy navigation?
The alternative I believe would be to just have all of the communities on one sheet but have to scroll down a number of rows to display the timelines.

The CFO wants to change the name of the top folder on our network drive at work.
I have literally thousands of files in different folders within this top folder, and changing the name of the top folder is going to cause hundreds of thousands of reference errors.
Is there a best way to protect these links, other than to find+replace for hours and hours?

Is it possible to update external links on a worksheet via running a macro?
I have a worksheet where some cells have external links to other files, and every month I have to scroll through and do the typing in order to have everything up and running.
A typical cell has formulas like =[E:ReportsAug-2007.xls]Data!F25
Another cell =[E:ReportsAug-2007.xls]Data!F43
and so on.
Every new month I actually have to replace all [E:ReportsAug-2007.xls] occurrences with for example [E:ReportsSep-2007.xls]. So, is it possible to have a macro which opens a textbox of which i can type the new month 'Sep', so that when the macro runs I save all the typing?

I have multiple sheets on which users enter data in Cells B3 to B21 on each sheet.
I have a master sheet where the information entered on individual sheets is copied by links. On the master sheet the information is displayed in Rows. Thus data on Sheet1 B5:B25 is displayed in Row 6 cells H6:Z6 of Master Sheet, data on Sheet2 is displayed in Row 7 cells H7:Z7 etc. The formula in H6 of the Master Sheet is =Sheet1!B5, in H7 it is =Sheet2!B5 etc. It is of course not possible to use Autofill to copy formulas across on the Master sheet. It can be done manually but there are hundreds of cells to fill.
Is there an elegant way to copy the formulae on individual sheets onto the Master Sheet.
I want to be able to repeat the procedure later if additional sheets need to be added.

I want to create a hyperlink to a sheet named "adsf"
I am currently in a worksheet named: "62b Arcus"
I want the hyperlink to be set by grabbing the name from another cell.
For example, In cell h7, I have the text: adsf
In cell g7, I want to place a formula such as: =HYPERLINK("adsf!")
Except, instead of this, I want: =HYPERLINK("h7!")
In this way, i want it to hyperlink to a sheet name based on the text that is in h7.
But neither of these formulas work. Both say the following: "Cannot Open the Specified File"
After reading up on this I have discovered that I must save the file and include the file name inside the formula.
My file name is: [Maintenance Color Codes of Houses - colour coded2.xlsm] =HYPERLINK("[Maintenance Color Codes of Houses - colour coded2.xlsm]adsf!A1","LINK")
This hyperlink actually works. Yet I have a problem. What if I rename the file. For this reason, I want it to grab the current file name using "filename". I have tried this by the following:
=MID(CELL("filename"),SEARCH("[",CELL("filename")),SUM(SEARCH("]",CELL("filename")),-SEARCH("[",CELL("filename")),1))
This grabs the current file name "Excluding the text outside of the [ and ]. I was able to create this formula myself.
How come I can't replace the part with [ and ] =HYPERLINK("[Maintenance Color Codes of Houses - colour coded2.xlsm]adsf!A1","LINK")
with:
=MID(CELL("filename"),SEARCH("[",CELL("filename")),SUM(SEARCH("]",CELL("filename")),-SEARCH("[",CELL("filename")),1))
These two formulas together would be:
=HYPERLINK("MID(CELL("filename"),SEARCH("[",CELL("filename")),SUM(SEARCH("]",CELL("filename")),-SEARCH("[",CELL("filename")),1))adsf!A1","LINK")
I also want to replace the "adsf" part with a cell number such as h7. So that it says h7!A1","LINK") or in full:
=HYPERLINK("MID(CELL("filename"),SEARCH("[",CELL("filename")),SUM(SEARCH("]",CELL("filename")),-SEARCH("[",CELL("filename")),1))h7!A1","LINK")
This doesn't work either
I know that I have probably created a ridiculous formula for what I am after. I'm almost there but not quite. You may know something far, far more simple.

I have attached the file I am working on. I am attempting to create a link to an external file based on the value of cells in column A. Then I would like to simply copy the formula down, lets say in Column B, the rows and as I do the external file reference will change depending on the value within the cell in Column A. I hope that I am making sense.
I am using Windows Vista with Excel 2007. The files will all be within the same file folder, however, there are hundereds of files so I won't be able to open them all for the indirect to work.

I thought i had worked it out, but for some reason the names aren't updating when i add a new time, and the same names appear when i add the same code for a different track. I was using this code {=INDEX(A2:A32,SMALL(IF(C2:C32<>0,ROW(C2:C32)),1),1)} as you can seen in cell A34, then added a 2 onto it for the second fastest time eg.....{=INDEX(A2:A32,SMALL(IF(C2:C32<>0,ROW(C2:C32)),2),1)}, but doesn't seem to update when adding a new fastest time in. Am i using the wrong code to match the names with the fastest times?

However, as the filter runs you can see that after it finds the fields it keeps running like it should to the end to make sure there are no additional values. Is there some faster way to search this many lines? Would it be faster to sort the worksheet first and then do something with a sorted worksheet or what are my other options?

For lngRowCount = lngLastRow To 1 Step -1
If Application.WorksheetFunction. CountIf(Sheets(2).Range("A1:A" & lngRowCount), Sheets(2).Range("A" & lngRowCount)) > 1 Then
Sheets(2).Range("A" & lngRowCount).EntireRow.Delete
End If

Perhaps if possible to somehow copy the

And paste it back in with just a sheet name change?

I have a loop that executes roughly 7.7 million times when my VBA program runs. Neednless to say it take a long time to run - usually a couple days.
The inner-most loop contains a line of code from way back in my early vba programming days when I knew even less than the small amount I know about programming now (and if you can follow that sentence you might be able to understand some of the spaghetti code I write :-) ).
for k = 1 to n
if Worksheets("Personell").Range("D" & Trim(Str(k))) > dtCompleted then ...
Would it be faster to use this syntax (which I just found out about):
if Worksheets("Personell").Cells(k,4) > dtCompleted then ...
It would cut out 2 functions calls, trim() and str(), so it would be faster, right?
I am almost embarassed to post the Range("D" & Trim(Str(k)) line of code because it looks so convoluted now, but that's how I learned to program, just fumbling through until it ran...
So in short, I just wanted to confirm that the cells() syntax run faster before I spend an hour editing and tested.

I'm trying to count the number of unique values from a list of over 8,000 records -- and it's very likely that nearly all of the records are unique. At the moment, I am keeping track of an array where I store every unique value I find, expanding the array and adding values as I go, and at the end return the size of the array to tell me how many unique values there are in the range. My method works, but it is very slow, even when I turn on manual calculation.
Here is what I have so far:
Function CountUniqueCases(inputRange As String)
Dim i, j As Integer
Dim cCaseID As Range
Set cCaseID = Worksheets("Results").Range(inputRange)
Dim uniqueCases() As String
Redim uniqueCases(1)
uniqueCases(1) = cCaseID.Cells(1).Value
Is there a faster way to do this? I was hoping there was an array search function built in to VBA, but apparently not. My first attempt at running this function returns about 7904 out of ~8000 as being unique.

I have a range of purchase order rows, with the formulas stored in the first row (TemplateRow) which is hidden. The users may add any number of rows to this range, depending upon the number of different products being purchased.
Code:
'Copy the template row into the first newly inserted row
Rows(TemplateRow).Copy Destination:=Rows(insertionPoint)
'fill down from the inserted row down to the last new row
With Rows(InsertionPoint & ":" & NumberOfInsertedRows.Rows.Hidden = False
.FillDownEnd With
The problem is copying the formulas down to the new rows can take terribly long (minutes) in scenarios of thousands of products. Is there a faster method of copying down my formulas?

Excel offers many ways to use a key to lookup a value (VLookup, Index/Match, DGet, and the rest). What's the fastest way to perform a lookup of a small table of, say, 30 rows of key-value pairs? Theoretically, it would be most efficient to use a branch table (also known as a jump table). See the wikipedia article for branch tables: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Branch_table. Does Excel/VBA have a way to create a branch table for such lookups?
