Don't Update Links On Workbook Open
Aug 12, 2009I have a workbook that has many cells that link to a server on the other side of the planet. If I manually open this workbook I get the "This workbook contains links to other data sources." And the option to "Update" or "Don't Update"
If I choose to not update, everything works great. If I choose to update, the worksheet takes 10-15 minutes to open. I have tried to go to tools-->options-->Edit and uncheck "ask to update automatic links" but this makes the default behavior updating. I want to open this workbook using a scheduled task and a batch file, and have it not update, and then run a macro. Any suggestions on how to do this?
Prevent Links Updating On Open
Oct 8, 2007I have a large workbook 45MB with 40 sheets each containing a section that links to the server to update itself when the workbook calculates. With that being said it's impossible to have the workbook on Automatic calculate because the update process can take about 7-10 minutes so its set to manual. However, I would like to prevent the links from updating (its one link that is used to update the file) by possibly a macro that runs when the workbook opens and prevent the update link from running when I press F9 to manually calculate.

Macro To Open New Files And Edit Links
May 12, 2014I'm trying to set up a macro so that: in column C I will see the current (old) links being used by the workbookin column D I will input the new links I want to use in the workbookthe macro will open all those files in column Dthe macro will then replace the current (old) links with those listed in column D
I have the following so far, but something doesn't seem to be working - it gets as far as opening the first new file but doesn't open any others and doesn't change any links (although I've tested the part to change links separately and this seemed to work ok).

Open Workbook With Password & Update Links
Sep 28, 2006I am having a workbook in server, it consists more than 12 sheets. Everyday in the early morning it need to be get updated, (i.e) normally when i open the file, it as for the Password (password for workbook), then after I given it will show three buttons Update Don't Update Help, so i need to press the Update Button , it should be done everyday in the early moring.
Is there any way to do this automatically open and update and close everday through vba code or anyother ways.
Macro Where I Try To Edit The Links After I Open The Workbook
Feb 3, 2007I have a macro where I try to edit the links after I open the workbook. I used the macro recorder to get the code, and if I use it, it works great. However, when I try to insert some variables in the code, I get an error saying "Method 'ChangeLink' of object'_Workbook' failed. I don't know why I'm getting this error. Below is code.

Excel Links Only Updates When Source Workbook Is Open?
Mar 24, 2014I built a template which pulls data from the source file using formulas. the problem is formulas doesn't give any error it updates the right value when the source workbook is open.
I Thought problem could be with the formula and tried just Source A1=destination A1. it also updates only if the source file is open. when the source file is closed it shows the last captured value.
The source file is on the (Work) Network Drive and is accessible to few people. my template is password protected (tabs) so formulas cannot be deleted.

May 28, 2007Does anyone have any code to put in Workbook_Open module that can get rid of this message that says "The workbook contains automatic links ......." and default the selection to Yes when asked if I want to update all linked information?

Unable To Edit Links With Workbook Open Because Of Invalid Reference?
May 31, 2013I'd prefer to edit links with the source workbook open, however I receive this error when I do "A formula in this worksheet contains one or more invalid references." I am able to edit links with the source workbook closed but this takes far too much time to be satisfied with that as the solution. I have used vlookup formulas and the index-match method and they both take about the same amount of time to update. I've separated each worksheet and used the "name manager" add-in and have searched all links for any type of error. I feel like I'm missing something. Is there a way to fix this "invalid reference" error so that I can edit my links with the source workbook open?

* I use error handler to resume the next statement if OPEN statement fails.It works fine inside the loop only for first two files.
For example if the third link is errorneous the error handler fails and RUN TIME ERROR occurs.

UDF Links
Jun 15, 2009I've been having a small problem with my UDFs. I'm sorry if it's already been asked but english isn't my first language and I don't know the proper search key works to find my problem.
Basically, I've been programming functions destined for a single workbook so I don't use addins. If I write a function called J13F and I try to write that in one of my excel sheets, it generally doesn't work. Excel makes me write it like this:
='myfilename.xls!'J13F.J13F(Sheet!F21)
However, sometimes when I close then open my file, this won't work and excel will make me use my function normally: J13F(Sheet!F21)
I'd like to be able to use the function normally in every sheet in my workbook, how can I do that?
Using Links In VBA
Feb 7, 2010I am using several spreadsheets which are currently linked to specific cells in other workbooks. These are updated through dating the links whenever needed. However I would rather not use formulas in the cells at all and only have value updated by using the link function within VBA. I cannot find how to do this though.
Just to reiterate. I currently have cells that have"='\server01main_foldersubfolderDocument.xls" for example. The formula syntax is not exactly right but in the spreadsheets it is so you get the idea. These links are updated (when the workbooks are not open) when the links are update via the edit menu or a macro which does the same thing.
What I want to do is have no formula in the cells (only values) and use the feature that takes the value from the other workbooks but in VBA exclusively. This is what I have not been able to find out how to do.

May 14, 2009I have two workbooks. One is a no-nonsense form interface that my bosses will use to enter safety information. I'll call this workbook "Form". This file is stored locally on each of their computers. The other workbook is stored on a common drive. I'll call it "Master".
When my bosses fill out the Form and click "Submit", the Master file is opened, and certain cells are populated based on information entered in the Form. This is the code I am using to make this happen:

Open Message Box Or Disable Option On Open
Mar 30, 2007how to make a MsgBox open anytime a cell in Column A was double-clicked--and the content of the MsgBox was from the cell in the same row in column Z. I've now realized the double-clicking isn't an ideal solution, as it's easy to click in another cell and mess up all the formulas.
(1) Code that deactivates the "edit directly in cell" option when the workbook is opened.
(2) Code that opens the MsgBox when a cell in Column A is clicked just once (or similarly less fool-proof than double-clicking or right-clicking).
Get Open File Name To Open Multiple Files

I use it to attempt to open first a QuickBooks file and then an excel workbook.
The Quickbooks file opens fine. The Excel workbook never appears to open but
I do get the full file pathname to my excel workbook returned which I then
parse off to get just the workbook name.
Why would it behave this way? I open both these files manually all the time.
Also, I'm trying to use a filter as follows:
myname = Application.GetOpenFilename("*.QBW")
I get a compile error saying that I'm calling the function wrong.
Spreadsheet Links
Sep 9, 2009I've created a spreadsheet which pulls data from about 5 other spreadsheets via links in the formula.
Unfortunately I am having trouble with these updating. I have to open the 5 individual spreadsheets in order for the data to pull across otherwise I get VALUE in every cell in the amalgamated spreadsheet.
Any thoughts why this should be the case? I've tried it in the past and it's always worked fine.
Updating Links All At Once
Apr 11, 2008if it would be possible to update all the links in a workbook at once. For example, say I have a worksheet which is linking to a file named something like 4-6-08 (1) and 4-6-08 (2) and so on with the number in brackets being from 1-21. Now say I have the same thing for 4-7 and 4-8 and 4-9. Now I want to change the links to point to 4-10,11,12,13 instead of 6,7,8, and 9. But still there are 21 copies of each sheet. Is there any way to change all the sources at once so all the 4-6's could become 4-10's and 4-7's to 4-11's?

Update Links When There Are None?

I see that a workbook is referenced in the "edit/links" menu, but I can find no way determine which cells, graphs, etc, in my workbook are subject to this link. I would like to get rid of this useless and bothersome issue.

Mar 4, 2008I've got an excel file with LOTS of links... it's a sort of 'dashboard' that draws in data from all the individual data files in the company.
Recently, when I open the file it's telling me "this file contains one or more links that cannot be updates".
So... as I usually would, I use my 'find links' add in to find anything with a #REF in it... nothing.
Go into edit links and manually update each link... and they all update with no issue.
I just cannot find anything that's broken!
