I am trying to use Excel to document fiber optic cables that run between different locations. Each cable has 2 ends, but whatever service is connected to one end, will also be a the other. I would like to use an Excel worksheet to represent a termination point (a "light shelf" comprised of several fiber optic cables each made up of several strands of fiber (kind of a table with the 1st 4 columns of 6 rows being cable A, and the next 8 cable B)). I would like to be able to type in the value for cable A Strand 1 and have it linked to another worksheet representing a different location (the other end) and vice versa. I have tried to paste a link, but that seems to get broken. Is there a better way to make permanent links (Excel is bawking about a circular reference, which it is as each end needs to be linked back to the other.
I am working on a research project of which details cannot be disclosed. I basically have many worksheets which each contain 3D positional data and I am plotting overlaid graphs using multiple worksheets. I have gotten them to work where I manually enter the names of the worksheets, but I am trying to use the CELL("filename") command to get the current worksheet's name, then using a substitute command to change certain fields, then I would like to use the string name created by those functions to call a global variable in another worksheet which defines a range. I will try to give an example.
Say I have 3 worksheets for arbitrary measurements: 1) filename 1mm 2) filename 2mm 3) filename 3mm
I would like to graph all 3 sets of data in worksheet "filename 1mm", using the fact that everything in the filenames are the same except for the 1/2/3mm part. I have a template of which I will be copy/pasting data from numerous data sets and then each worksheet has defined names "X_vals" and "Y_vals" which give me dynamic ranges for the data I wish to plot from that worksheet.
When I type the names manually--i.e. " 'filename 2mm'!X_vals" everything works fine, but when I try to create the exact same string dynamically using indirect/substitute/left/right etc, it does not let me do it. I am able to create a dynamic string with a range, such as " 'filename 2mm'!C10:C100" but then when I change it to " 'filename 2mm!X_vals" it just gives me #REF!.
I guess my question is just is there any way to use the indirect function to create a string name dynamically which references a defined name in another worksheet? If not possible with just simple excel functions, is there a way to do this with a macro? I am not exactly familiar with VBA in excel, though I know how to run macros.
I have VBA code that creates three reports based on fields a user chooses. When the user clicks the button to create the first report, links are built to the files which contain the fields they chose. There are approximately 15 files that need to be linked in every report.
When the links are built, referencing the external files, the system is extremely slow.
I have Application.ScreenUpdating = False and Application.Calculation = xlCalculationManual.
Despite these settings, the links pull in updated values.
Also, to create the last two files, I do a FIND/REPLACE to change the cells referenced in the links, causing it to choke.
would get the links in place without updating each one as it is created?
What I'm trying to do is link a cell to give me the sum of 2 different cells located in 2 different tables I created.
So I want to have Cell B5 look for the number in cell B3 in the Table that starts in column Q1 and give me the corresponding number in the same row in the column R1
then lookup the number in cell B1 in the Table that starts in column T1 and match it with the number in Column U1 that corresponds to it in the same row
and Finally give me the sum of both corresponding numbers.
IE.. the number in B3 is found in Q13 which uses the number it corresponds to in R13. The takes B1 finds it in T16 and uses the number it corresponds to in U16.
Then returns the sum of R13 and X16 into B5. (B5 should show 176)
I have an unwanted link and I can't remove it. I have tried through the Edit Links dialog box, searched for [ in formulas throughout the workbook and gone searching manually for the reference but to no avail.
How can I detect on an excel workbook which cell have links(formula =) to other workbooks without have to put my cursor on top of each linked cell.
I have had a hard time finding this cells. I can see the links by choosing Edit then links, and excel will display list of links, but it does not specify which cells contain those links
I have received an excel spreadsheet that only has 23 columns. The sheet is not protected, the columns are not hidden, the columns are not shrunk to .01 millimetres, the columns are quite simply not there. How is this possible to do? Columns displayed are a through to W. If I delete a column the columns display only a through to v.
I've been using the function =vlookup(...) to fill up the cells in my spreadsheet. However, a problem I've come across is that vlookup does not make the values in the cell permanent and keeps drawing whatever value is found in the corresponding cells it searches. Thus if the file it draws it's info from goes missing or is edited, my data also changes accordingly. Therefore I would like to ask if there was a way in which I can make the data permanent in my spreadsheet.
I have downloded several versions of the VBA calendar posted either here on or on "hey that's cool" forum (i.e Phil's calendar, Barry's calendar etc, ect), however I could not find the answer for making the calendar stay on the spreadsheet permanently without any triger to initilise the user form.
What I am trying to do is to have an embeded calendar in my worksheet where user can choose different dates and link this to a pivot table date field, so when the date changes pivot table output changes. I managed to do that with excel calendar control tool, however not everybody has the OCX file on their computer.
In spreadsheet 1 I have a bunch of data, no formulas or anything, but data I need. I created spreadsheet 2 to take parts of S1 and have set links to cells in S1 so that when the data there is changed S2 gets updated automatically for me.
My problem is that when I add or delete rows or columns to S1 it's messing up my links in S2, not showing the right data. Issue with my linking that will tie the cells together when rows or columns are added or deleted.
I have cells (range named Formulas) in a worksheet A (wsA) linking to another workbook. This workbook has several sheets, each a different forecast. From a Radio Button Group on wsA I would like to choose forecast, FC1-FC3, and then all the cells in the range Formulas would be updated with the choosen FC.
I would like a VBA script to handle this:When the workbook is activated the present Forecast in the Radio Button Group should be stored as a variable (oldFC)When I choose a new forecast, the value should be stored in a new variable (newFC)I then want to loop through the whole range (Formulas) and update each cell and it's part of string value to the newFC
Before update: wsA cell N3='H:[5500-plan-06.xls]FC 3'!N$16 wsA cell N4='H:[5500-plan-06.xls]FC 3'!N$17
When new Forecast is choosen this should be update to: wsA cell N3='H:[5500-plan-06.xls]FC 1'!N$16 wsA cell N4='H:[5500-plan-06.xls]FC 1'!N$17
I have a table that contains +/- 12,000 (A6:R12266) rows and I use several conditional formatting rules to highlight rows where the data changes from the row above in a sorted column for the visual easy of users. The conditional formatting works great however the data is the spreadsheet is constantly being modified and that is where I run into the problem. Whenever a row is inserted or deleted my rule is divided into multiple rules which is tedius to manage and also causes the formatting to appear incorrectly in some cases. I have the table defined as a named table in the name manager and I use that name for the range in the "Applies to" in conditional formatting, but as soon as I choose apply the name is converted to the current range which becomes several seprate rules and ranges as soon as the table is modified.
Formula to define which rows are highlighted =$F5<>$F6
Range data applis to after chosing the tables name and clicking apply =$A$6:$R$12266
I have a cell that has a result which is the average of a few other cells (In this case the result is in cell Y7). I now want to take that total and put it in another cell to represent todays result..I.E. I have a list of this months dates and I want the todays result to be populated in the table. So I have a list of dates and the cell next to each date has the formula:
=IF(TODAY()=A24,$Y$7,"").
It populates todays result fine however the next day it blanks the result (since the cell is no longer todays date).
SO the question: How to I have todays result oerwite the formula so the result is permanent in that cell. I guess I am looking for some sort of PUT command to take the result and PUT it in another cell without that cell being a formula itself to GET the date.
I have a list of links in 1 excel worksheet. They are spaced every other row if it makes a difference. I need to create a macro that clicks on every link automatically. Each link is a direct file that I need downloaded every few months. I have no Macro experience beyond hitting record to automate basic tasks.
I would like to refresh all external links to other xl files (on a network drive) and break all links
I have a code like this:
Code: For Each l In ActiveWorkbook.LinkSources Workbooks.Open Filename:=l, updatelinks:=1, ReadOnly:=True ActiveWorkbook.Close False Next l
For Each l In ActiveWorkbook.LinkSources ActiveWorkbook.BreakLink l, xlLinkTypeExcelLinks Next l
It seems to be working, but if i go step by step (f8) it updates values but sometimes after closing the source workbook and updating next one, the previously updated values disappear...
I cannot open all files because there are many of them and they are like 40mb each.
There are no defined names in the file, except print_area
I have the following code in Sheet1 for file Book7.xls
Private Sub Worksheet_Calculate()
On Error Resume Next
For Each rcell In Range("A1:D6") Select Case rcell.Value Case Is >= 5 rcell.Interior.Color = vbBlue Case Is < 5 rcell.Interior.Color = vbRed End Select Next rcell
End Sub
Range A1:D6 is linked to an external source file which I am changing every now and then.
A1 has the formula:
=[Book8.xls]Sheet1!A1*1
Copied all the way to D6.
[Book8.xls]Sheet1!A1:D6 presently has all values 1 hence the formatting in Book7 is all red.
Now I an changing source file to Book9.xls (thru EDIT menu->LINKS). [Book9.xls]Sheet1!A1:D6 has all values 10. But when I change external source to Book9.xls, the right formatting did not apply. All are still red (instead of blue). I still need to go in one of the cell and press F2 and F9 to trigger calculation.
How do I change the code in order to recognise the calculation in order to trigger the codes in the event?
I extract text into a new column using =Left(). I want to make that column permanent. That is, I want to delete the source column but keep me extracted column. How?
How do i make a formatting rule permanent to certain cell's.
The steps i followed:
I selected the columns and rows to be formatted. in conditional formatting I selected new rule. then selected the second function, "format only cells that contain" in format only cells with: specific Text , then " ending with" Over Issues.
in format i selected the font and fill.
I saved and close the document, after reopening the rule is no longer working.
I have some text that I am having to analyze which comes out of our computer looking like this:
N/0/N/Y/N/N/N/N/N/N/N/N/N/N/N/N/N
I use the text to columns function and headers above it to translate what each field is.
As I'm doing my testing if I do this once, I can keep the file open and any time I paste a similar entry in it takes care of the formatting.
But, is there way to make the file do that permanently? I want to let the other testers use it without making them have to go through the steps of clicking on the delimiter, etc.
I have a sheet called "Sheet1" in workbook "File1". In this sheet, I have a lot of formulas and some of them involves linking to external files located in E: Finance folder. Is there a way to automatically highlight those cells containing a formula that references to external files?
I have backwards co-workers that can't figure out how/why to use conditional formatting and have deigned it "not acceptable".
They've requested I fill in a HUGE spreadsheet and change the font color to red if it meets a criteria.
Simple enough to do with a conditional format that compares my data.
HOWEVER, now I need the individual cells to stay red and remove the conditional format (because conditional formatting "confuses" them). Removing the condition causes the color to go back to black. I've tried all sorts of paste specials (formula/format) to no avail...
I'm using excel 2000 and I just noticed something and am unsure how to change. I guess early on my building of a workbook I accidentally left calculation to manual. I would like to change calculations to automatic on permanent basis. I keep changing it and it changes back to manual after I close then reopen the workbook. I would prefer to change permanently to automatic....Any ideas would be a bonus. On all new workbooks I can save in automatic but I cannot change from manual to automatic.
I want to put a permanent date & time stamp in cell A1 (date) and cell A2 (Time) when cell A3 is populated by any character which would be an inputters initials.
I'm thinking that it will be an "IF" statement but then I am getting confused about how I make it not update when the spreadsheet is opened at a later date and time.
I have two columns with correlating data. i created a validation drop down list and would like the corresponding number to populate a cell based on the drop down list selection. i.e....
I have a worksheet that I would like where you can just enter the date, then it builds a filename based on that.
Example. Filename I would like to load information from is "C:EXMay 2009May 21,2009.xls" The sheet is "Data" and the cell/row is A1
The Filename could be entered simply as 'C:ExMay 2009[May21,2009.xls]Data'!$A$1
But what I would like to do, is be able to generate a weeks worth of filenames from the date I entered.
I have one cell with the root directory (lets say A1) A1 = C:EX A2 = May A3 = 21 A4 = 2009
So in cell A5 I would like to combine them all to load the information from that filename.
I tried to do something along the lines of
A5 = A1 + A2 + " " &A4 (etc etc), but that wasn't working at all. The main reason for breaking them up is so that I could just increment the date to get a weeks worth of files.
I want to create Name to include data in A101, C101, E101, G101, I101, K101, M101 and O101. How do I do it? I tried to hold ctrl, then click on each cell above, type name but it did not take.
