Excel 2010 :: Importing Large Text File Over 3 Million Rows?

View 3 RepliesI have a number of large CSV files with approximately 1.9 million rows, (this is more then excel can bring in). I typically have to import/delimit the files when brining them into excel. However, when I try this I get the message not all data imported. I would like to be able to split the records in the csv file to multiple tabs in the excel woorkbook when doing the import/delimit but do not know how to accomplish this. The delimit of the data varies each time due to the nature of the data so doing a macro is more trouble to create each time. Currently I am having to open the csv file in notepad and split it up into multiple files then import each new file seperately.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a log that I regularly use to import text files, after each text file import it leaves a large number of rows blank that I have to delete before I add in the next text file import.
Any VBA method to detect this and remove the blank rows so that I dont have to keep checking to remove?
Getting some web page data into Excel 2010 using VBA. My scenario however is set up with the following titles in cell A1, B1, C1, D1 and E1 : POST CODE, OUTLET, ADDRESS, TELEPHONE, EMAIL
The result I want to achieve is I enter a post code into cell A2 for example, Excel then uses IE to navigate to the relevant web page as defined in the VBA code. I then want the following to happen:
The InnerText of the web page's h1 tag is then inserted into the OUTLET cell (B2)The first instance of the p tag is then inserted into the ADDRESS cell (C2)The second instance of the p tag is then inserted into the TELEPHONE cell (D2)The third instance of the p tag is then inserted into the EMAIL cell (E2)
All instances of the p tag are contained in a div element called div class="adBox_content" . There are also 5 other DIVs above that DIV in the hierarchy.
Using the YouTube tutorial link, the method has worked for me using the getElementsByTagName("h1").innerText
However, when I try adding a second getElementsByTagName("p")(01).innerText the whole thing fails.
So I'm left with two problems; I can't make the VBA get more than one element at a time from the page, I can only either have the h1 or the first instance of the p tag. I've tried all the getElementBy methods and none of them seem to work in getting the second and third instances to show.
I also need the code to make the data be put on the same row ONLY as where the post code was entered. In this scenario for example of entering a post code into A2, the OUTLET needs to land in cell B2 only, ADDRESS C3 only etc.
By following the youtube tutorial above by giving the cells names to refer to in the code, the data ends up being inputted in all further rows with identical cell names. I need it to not do that.
The code is needed for around 300 rows of post codes that will be entered and refreshed every week or so.
I created a vb macro to open a text file then process the file then close the file. Here is my problem:
Problem: THe text file has rows of data in it as follows
5155111111551511111111111511111111111111111
This row of text gets converted to
5.16E+42
because excel treats the row of text as a number but i dont want it to do this transition.
When i save the file and then reopen it using say NOTEPAD i see 5.16E+42 and not the long string of text.
I wanted to see if there is a VBA code to do the following :
a) Select a TabText Delimited file based on a criteria
b) Import the Selected Data to Excel
I have the vba code where I can open the tab text delimited file in excel, use a selection criteria and then copy the data into excel. But I am having problems with the case where the Tab Text Delimited file exceeds the row limit that excel currently has and wanted to see if the data import can be done without opening the text file into excel at all.
Here is my current query :
Sub TEST()
' TEST Macro
Workbooks.OpenText Filename:="E:Testdata.txt"
ActiveSheet.Range("$A$1:$B$1048576").AutoFilter Field:=1, Criteria1:="1234"
Range(Selection, Selection.End(xlToRight)).Select
[Code] .......
So I am trying to use this VBA:
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/ImportBigFiles.aspx
It´s basically so I can important a very large log file, about 800,000 lines, many of them repeating, I want to import into Excel to better control the data.
I keep trying to import the data, and I cant get it to make me new sheets.
With reference to Importing large text file. i need to get large text files to automatically split across Excel sheets sheets while trying to Import. Can it be done only through Macros or is there any function in Excel itself.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a file that has been produced using Statistica software. The file is supposed to have around one million rows, and when exported to Excel the file is about 30 MB. When I open the .xlsx file in Excel 2010 only two pages of data appear. The rows also have weird numbering. The first square of the A column is A1. The second is A3833, the third is A6789, then A8161, then A8162, then A8163, then A8164, then A18070.
The scroll button to the left of the screen is long, as if the document was only two pages long. When the scroll button is click-and-dragged a small beige square appears with a row number. This small square seems to be aware that not all rows are shown as it shows many more rows than are visible to me.
Using Excel 2010
As I am looping through files in a folder, I would like to determine if the file is a text file.
The problem is that all extensions are variable in a pattern such as .078, .051, etc.
In this instance, the extensions are numeric, but I'm trying to figure out a way to handle that is all encompassing to include *.txt, *.tsv, *.csv, *.prn, etc......
How can I handle these efficiently?
I have a text file with rows and columns of numbers ranging from 1-4 digits that I'd like to import/copy into Excel with each number being in its own cell. But whenever I copy/try to import, Excel splits all of the 3-4 digit numbers up into single digit numbers. The text file has 10,000+ columns (each number occupies two columns so I have half of that amount in numbers) and 300+ lines.
Is the file simply too large for Excel to handle or is there a way I can do this?
I am using Excel 2010 and I want to import data from a text file, but the problem is that the data is more than 1048576 rows of excel. Is there any solution though codes if one sheet fills up and import remaining data to other sheets ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a workbook with many spreadsheet named Sheet1, Sheet2 and so on. Each sheet is filled completely upto 65536 rows. This data is being picked up from a CSV file. In this file there are sites with each site there is a assciated set of data. What happens is the data that extracts data does not differntiate between sites and when it reaches to the end of worksheet it splits the data into next sheet. So I am trying to create a macro to check each spreadsheet starting with the last sheet in the work book for example last sheet in the workbook is seven it should go to sheet6 and if there is a blank row after row 64000 it should cut all the rows and move them to sheet7. Then it should goto sheet5 and do the same and keep on doing it until it reaches sheet1.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI need to import thousand of txt files into 1 worksheet keeping the file names as data. Each txt file has 2 columns :
1 0.65914
2 0.65945
3 0.86062
... ...
and each txt file represents recordings made at specific time and date (e.g 0158.DSG_RAWD_HMS_21_ 0_ 0__DMY_29_ 2_12_pulses). I would like to have 2 columns: 1) with the time taken from the name of the txt file (e.g. 21:00:00) and 2) the associated recording. Something like this:
21:00:00 0.65914
21:00:00 0.65945
21:00:00 0.86062
and so on for each txt file and all the recordings piling up in 1 spreadsheet. I have tried to run few codes in VBA, but I have no knowledge of it and none of the code worked. I am using Excel 2010.
I'm trying to use Excel to build a text file based on values from certain cells in Excel 2010. This is based partially off of static text that never changes and variables that will need to change. For example, I want Excel to output a text file that has the following text: The red fox jumped over the $X twice. I would want $X to be replaced by the value of A1 of the active worksheet. I will also have several lines like that, so it won't just be a single line, but anywhere from 20 - 120.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to open a text file from Excel 2010 and specify that I want it in .xls format?
I am working in compatibility mode, and expected that when I opened a text file from code within an xls file, the text file would have 65,536 rows, but it has 1,048,576. This causes a problem when we try to copy the sheet with the data from the text file, and insert the sheet into our xls workbook. See code below. The error is: Run-time error '1004': Excel cannot insert the sheets into the destination workbook, because it contains fewer rows and columns than the source workbook..
I know I can get the data other ways (such as copying and pasting only the cells containing data) but I was hoping to make minimal changes to the code below as I will have to make it across several templates. Specifically, I was hoping that there was a qualifier I could add to the Workbooks.OpenText statement after "Tab:=True" - Perhaps something about opening the text file in File Format 56. However I have not been able to find out how to do that.
Code:
.....FileToOpen = Application.GetOpenFilename("All Files (*.*),*.*,GeoTAC Files (*.ctf),*.ctf, Â_
Text Files (*.txt),*.txt,Excel Files (*.xls),*.xls", 1, , , False)
Workbooks.OpenText Filename:=FileToOpen, _

I have been tasked with streamlining a process to collect data from a specific online website (Web of Science) and import it into an Excel 2010 spreadsheet.
Currently they are going to the website, entering a short number of search parameters and then manually recording the pertinent data from the webpage. They would like to be able to enter a keyword in Excel (which acts as the search item) which then automatically does the rest of the process and provides them with a spreadsheet of the required data.
Is this possible? Perhaps by using Visual Basic code within Excel? I also saw a method that employed SharePoint Server 2010.
I have a text file which is attached as "rawdata". It contains records of something (let's call it temperature) at different times on different days. My goal is to display a graph of temperature versus time so that I can visually analyze trends. I have hundreds of these files, all of different lengths. it is very important that I automate this process as much as possible.
Detail: (Here I describe what I have done so far; if this is inefficient or unnecessary, feel free to tell me) I open Excel 2010, click File, Open, and select the file that I want to parse. It is a TXT file, so the Text Import Wizard comes up. For step one, I select Fixed Width. I select File Origin: MS-DOS (PC-8). On step 2 of the wizard, I create column break lines to place all dates in the far left column. The next column contains the first column of numbers before the first dash (-). The next column contains only the dash - I will later select "ignore this column" to eliminate them. The next column contains the time stamps. I continue adding column breaks in the wizard until all of the data are parsed into columns in the same manner.
In step 3, I format the first column as "date (DMY)". The columns with the dashes I select "do not import". Everything else is "general". I click "finish", and the resultant workbook is attached, called "import".
Now, as to what I want to do: I want to display the "temperatures" as a graph vs a date/time axis. The reason I find this difficult is because the temperatures and times are not in neat columns, but are in 4 columns that go in a left-to-right and top-to-bottom progression and are broken up every few lines. (I am interested only in numbers that are displayed immediately to the left of a time-stamp. Therefore, the "record #"s should be ignored. We can delete the rows that say "record #" if can be done automatically.)
importing a text file. 3 times per day, I pull a report off a website and save it as a txt file. Typically, the data consists of approx 2000 customer ID's, and their respective data. When I import the data into Excel, it uses 2 or 3 rows to list information for each customer ID. I need a to seperate out only the customers ID which are 9 numbers long (no text in the ID), their SS #'s, and are listed as "FUL Request" or "PTR Request".
Since the data takes up 2 or 3 rows, the "Text to Column" feature does not work.
So the VBA should be able to look at each row, and if it has a 9 number customer ID in the row directly above it, and meets all other criteria, them post the customer ID number, the SS# and the verbiage "FUL Request" or "PTR Request" onto a seperate sheet.
Or the VBA can simply delete the rows that don't meet the criteria listed above.
I am using Chip Pearson's method of importing a text file into Excel (found at http://www.cpearson.com/excel/imptext.htm )
It works great except for one aspect. Two of my columns of data are in the format "dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm:ss", which is very necessary.
I have set the worksheet, the file is being imported into, to the same format. My problem is that, during the import of data, Excel (in it's wisdom) decides to automatically transpose the dd and mm numbers (if they meet the natural calendar conditions i.e. 01/09/2006 becomes 09/01/2006, 09/01/2006 becomes 01/09/2006 whilst 21/09/2006 remains the same).
As you can imagine this causes havok with several other functions that I have running off that source data (once imported). I have looked at the code and, whilst I can follow the general gist of it, I am unable to find any reference to format of the data.
I found this code that import TAB delimited text file. I would like to import space delimited text file instead.
VB:
Option Explicit
Sub ReadTxtFiles()
Const conSpath As String = "C:"

I'm importing data from Excel 2010 into a database.
I'm joining to 2 cells into one. A1 = 12 Rushwood Street and B1 = London. So C1 = 12 Rushwood Street London
I need C1 to look like this:
12 Rushwood Street
London
I tried wrap text but when I import it comes out as one line in the database.
I have a program in unix that ouputs a text file in .csv form which allows me to import my data into an excel spreadsheet very easily. I am wondering if there is anyway I can add formatting, like to tell excel to make a cell green or something like that.
If it can't be done with .csv, is there any other tool or format available that will accomplish this?
I have VBA code that imports a text file using a fixed width separator within the code. The code is working just as I need it to work and placing the information/data in the columns that I have specified in the code.
The issue I have is I only want to import certain data that is contained within the text file. It is going to be a little hard to explain, so I have attached a sample of the text file with dummy data to better explain. The file is broken up into different segments. Each segment is identified by a “Base Number” in column A of the text file (once it has been converted into an Excel file).
For my example, I only want to import data for Base Number 38451. The information for this segment is easy enough to identify when the data starts and when the data ends. As in this example, the first occurrence of 38451 begins at row 257. Once the first instance of this number is identified, the first row of data that I require is always two rows after.
I think the coding should go something like this, but I just can’t figure out how to put it into my
If cell in column A = 38451 then
- start importing from 2 rows down
- continue to import until next row in column C is not = date
If row in column C = blank then
- search in column A until cell = 38451
If cell in column A = 38451 then
- start importing from 1 row down
- continue to import until next row in column C is not = date
Else
- stop import
I have included two files. (1) the text file with the data (2) the Excel file. There are two tabs in the Excel file “ReconSheet” (contains the data that is imported from the text file) and “Desired Result” (this is how I want the end product to look).
am in a time crunch to write VBA code(not use the macro recorder) to do the following:
Input data from a tab delimited Text file into a pre-formatted sheet.
Each column of the text file is as follows (product code, buy/sell, quantity, price, date) Example row below.
YM Buy 50 12800 1/2/2008
Is there code I can use to do this? I need each individual piece of data to import into it's own cell while keeping the Row/column alignment of the original text document.
I am importing a text file, Comma Seperated, small sample below....

I'm have Excel 2010 and Windows XP. Each week I get 3 spreadsheets and each has data unique to it. Each spreadsheet has a week number column which is common to all three. I want to combine the three worksheets into one and make create several dynamic charts for management. How should I organize a large spreadsheet? In addition to my week number I have a host of other date fields. Some of the data I get is (1) vehicle VIN numbers (2) City/State/Country (3a) I break up the VIN to give me vehicle type (3b) year of assembly (3c) car type (3d) number of doors (4) mileage (5) complaint (7) defect code etc. etc. What are the do's and don't when setting up a large spreadsheet? I have data by week which goes back to 2006 and so my date fields go top-down. I inherited the three spreadsheets and would like everything under one roof, so to speak. One spreadsheet which I can make my charts.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI run reports that tell me when an individual is supposed to be in the office and when they actually log in, but this is a manual process where I have to go through several hundred people each morning and check. I have created a macro that pulls in their time in and out and makes there name appear as Last, First.
I run a seperate report that creates a schedule with headers and other information that is useless in this process. I have attached a dummy file and get this down to the last, first name and then the times in and such with no headers? I am also trying to keep the total number of people at the bottom in it's own cell.
I am at a loss as the file uses multiple spaces and not ,'s or ;'s etc.
