Finding Unique Entries Among Two Columns Of Alphanumeric Data
Jun 16, 2006
Columns A & B contain several thousand Project Numbers (e.g., P1052, PA844, etc.). Many of the Project Numbers in column B are the same as in column A, but column B also has additional (i.e., newer) Project Numbers scattered throughout. Ideally, I would like to use a built-in function (versus a custom function if possible) that compares all the Project Numbers in both columns and then separately lists those that are unique to column B.

I have two columns of data: 1 column can be possibly anything, either numeric, alphanumeric, or alpha only (VINS or vehicle numbers). The adjacent column are four different types of vehicles. I've tried concatentating the two to try and count the unique combinations (a truck maybe used more than once during the day), which I can get unique values, but not unique values for each type. Also, the range sizes are variable, but no more that 65 rows.
An example:
5CZ975 Van
25RW04 Straight
5CZ975 Van
ZJ6026 Van
So, the result I am after is 2 vans, 1 straight truck
I found an array in a another post, but it is not working properly (see cell F7 in the attached):
=sum(if(frequency(if($b$2:$b$18=$f7,$a$2:$a$18),$a$2:$a$18)<>"",1,0))

I have a dataset that looks like below -
Header1 Header2 Data
100 101 20.50
102 19
103 1003.2
101 100 20.50
200 300
102 100 20
200 104 30
Now, what i need to do is for each of the rows in my dataset, I need to find the reverse entries (consider first row where header 1 is 100 and header2 is 101, I need to search the entire dataset to find if I have some data for header1 is 101 and header2 is 100). In this case, I do have such data where header1 is 101 and header2 is 100.
Header1 Header2 Data Reverse Entry Difference
100 101 20.50 20.50 0
102 19 20 -1
103 1003.2 Not found Not found
101 100 20.50 20.50 0
200 300 30 270
102 100 20 19 1
200 101 30 300 -270
let me know if that's possible through excel formulas?
I need a column D with such data and column E for differences. So that, my final output should look like below -

I have 620 columns of data with each column consisting of 17 rows. I need to be able to count the number of unique entries in each column. I recorded a macro that would do what I wanted, but it just used absolute references for each column, which would make the process rather tedious. Is there a way to make the macro less restrictive?
Sub Macro1()
Columns("B:B").Select
ActiveSheet.Range("$B$1:$B$17").RemoveDuplicates Columns:=1, Header:=xlNo
End Sub

In that file, you can see there is a list of somewhat similar data across 5 columns. Some of the entries are duplicates, some are different by only one character. What I want to be able to do is generate a list of all the unique rows of data, taking into account the data from ALL 5 columns. The list can be on another sheet or simply just further down on the same sheet, that doesn't matter too much.
I could do it if it were just one column of data, but struggling trying to do it with several columns.

I have a spreadsheet which is to record quality checks on work carried out by staff. The spreadsheet has a customer reference number in column B and a Staff reference number in column C.
I can carry out a number of checks on a member of staff on one transaction, so for instance, I could carry 3 checks on one customer number, which would result in the staff ref number being enetered 3 times (there is 1 check per row).
I need a formula to count the number of checks I carry out on each member of staff. My problem is that although 3 checks could be completed on someone, if it is on the same customer NO, it only counts as 1 check. In effect, I need a formula to count the number of staff ref numbers which have a unique customer number eneterd in the adjacent column.
All the cust numbers are unique so would I be able to use a wildcard?

I have a spreadsheet with two columns:
The first one will always have a 'W' or a 'E'.
The second one will have a three digit code. Like this:
W 507
W 507
W 507
E 504
E 504
W 505
W 505
W 504
W 504
Is it possible to have output that show how many of each combination there is? Like this(for the example above):
W 504 2
W 505 2
W 507 3
E 504 2

What I need to do is search the list and pull out the groups of defining markers for each blood cell. Some of the cells have many markers, some only have one but I need to find which combinations of markers identify each cell if possible.
I have attached the file (I think!)

I'm trying to create a single column of stock bin codes for eventual conversion to barcodes. The bin codes run like this:
A1A
A1B
A1C - etc. to A1H, then the sequence starts again with:
A2A
A2B
A2C etc. up to A6H, when the 1st character changes to B and the sequence starts again
This needs to continue until the sequence reaches Z6H
How to do this without having to enter each code manually?

I have a large spreadsheet of species activity data and want to separate information from two columns to create a bar chart of when a certain species is active over a 24-hour period. There are duplicates of each species in one column and a unique corresponding time of activity for that species in another, something like the following:
Species A 23:01
Species B 07:09
Species C 13:45
Species D 08:30
Species A 01:55
Species A 22:07
Species C 15:29
What formula can I enter that only selects Species A and their corresponding times that I can copy into a new spreadsheet?

What I need to do is sort certain entries in longer list (column A, it is in .csv format and needs to be in it so coordinates and names and ID, all sorted with commas) and I have another list (column C) which is shorter list of certain IDs. I googled and tried and got some results for the basic structure but the fuction seems to fail. It doesn't matter how I get that third list done, but there is only one criteria: since the list in column A is really long and those entries need to keep the .csv formatting, the function should copy that info what is in the matching cells.
Let me try to put it simple: .csv cells from column A that have matching ID from column C should be copied to column B (or N).
the function I'm working with right now is
=IF(ISERROR(FIND($C:$C; A1))=TRUE;"0";A1)

I've entered in column B: =IF(MATCH(A2,C$2:C$303),A2,"No")
This formula is resulting in a duplicate of column A in column B.

I have attached a before and after image of what I am looking to accomplish.
In the before image, you can see that there are 3 rows of data
- a header
- a repeating model number (in column F) with accompanying data (values in columns G - J are the items of interest)
In the after image, you can see that I took the 3 rows of data and turned it into simply two rows of data
- a header
- the repeating model number
What I did however in the after image, as can be seen, is I took the data that appeared on the repeating row (Row 3 from the Before image), and included the PRICE, COST, BEGIN, and END values in new columns on row 2.
The model number is the same of course, which is why I did it that way.
If the model numbers were different, I would have simply left it alone, as-is.
Is there a way to accomplish this via some functions or maybe even a VBA script?
By the way, if we have to dump all of this onto a new sheet, then so be it.

I am working on large sets of data (more than 50,000 rows of data). I have two sets of data. Set 1 and Set 2 (master data) on the same worksheet. Both the sets of data have three columns each. I am using EXCEL 2007. I was able to accomplish step 1 below.. but I am totally lost with step 2 since i have an additional criteria for the "year".
I have attached the excel sheet as well. This is what I am trying to accomplish:
1) I want to find exact matches in set 1 and set 2 and highlight it or do something to show that a match was found. The challenge is the data in set 1 can occur anywhere in set 2.
2) Add to the complication .. my criteria for matching the year is different. If the Set 1 "year" is equal to or greater by 1 yr or greater by 2 yr when compared to Set 2 "year", I want to treat it as a "match".
For example, from the data attached:
Set 1 data in row 4 is: ATLANTIC ABSECON 2004
Set 2 data in row 3 is: ATLANTIC ABSECON 2003
I want to treat these two data as "MATCH" since ATLANTIC matches ATLANTIC, ABSECON matches ABSECON and according to one of my criteria for year, Set 1 "year" is greater by 1 yr than the Set 2 "year".

I have a lengthy excel spreadsheet in which I catalog all of my Karaoke song collection. I would like to be able to automatically locate (not delete) cells in which there are duplicate song titles. For my purposes just finding these items quickly so I may deal with them in a manner I've already developed is all I want to do. VBA, Macro or whatever would be appreciated. I'm a relative novice with macros and VBA.
For example row 12 may have the song title "Crazy" in column C and later row 1200 may have the same song title. Manually searching the spreadsheet for dupliates is way too time consuming so I think it can be seen why I'm looking to unlock the power of excel to do this for me.

I have a list of names that are mixed and in no order (and need to stay out of order, so not sorting allowed). I need to parse this list to give me the FIRST instance that each name shows up in the list. The one exception is that the first name, cell A1, will be auto-generated from a different workbook, and it is automatically named Name1.
So, in the example spreadsheet, Name1 (cell E2) must equal "Alice". The problem arises on Names2-4. Name2 (cell E3) should be David, Name3 (cell E3)=Jerry, and Name4 (cell E4)=Mark. I tried an array formula:
{=INDEX(A2:A13,MATCH(TRUE,A2:A13<>Name1),0)},
But it is yielding "Jerry" as Name2, when it needs to be Name3. And, of course, this doesn't work on Names3-4 at all. I don't think it matters, but just in case, A2:A13 will be data validation lists.

I was wondering if there might be a better way to write this macro. What it does is clears unique items from a Range( leaves duplicates ) I've looked all over the net I can find all kinds of function and subs to remove duplicates but haven't been able to find anything that just removes single entries. I"ll bet there's a more elegant way to write this maybe using a Collection or a Dictionary.
Sub Dummy()
Dim MP1_Rnge As Range
Set MP1_Rnge = Range("A1:A100")
For Each Cell In MP1_Rnge
If Not IsEmpty(Cell) Then
If Cell.Row = 1 Then..........
