Formatting A Number Field To Hold A Specific Number Of Digits
Feb 12, 2009
I wrote an excel program in Excel'03 for a dental office to manage state assistance patients and one of the table columns is the state assistance number. The problem is that the program defaults to a number format when it is entered instead of a text format, which is what I want. The issue is that state assistance numbers are always 8 digits and when it defaults to a number field the program drops the required preceeding zeros.
For example the number 00123456 will sometimes show up as 123456, which is wrong. It's like sometimes it will show up right and other times it gets a butterfly in its brain and deletes those zeros irritating the receptionist here. So, how do I get the table to either stay in text format or set up a number format that keeps the preceeding zeros?
I use pivot tables extensively in my job. I have several spreadsheets that feed from acess database tables to build pivot tables. Besides the fields imported from Acess, I also create calculated fields. The problem is, for both the calculated fields and the imported fields, the number formatting does not stick. I know how to go to field settings, then to number, and change the customized format. The problem is, once I take that field out of the pivot table and bring another one with a different format (say, bring a field with currency format and take away one field with a percentage format) and then bring the original field back to the privot table, the number format is gone.
This is really annoying since I work with dozens of fields, and it takes time to change the number settings every time I change fields on the pivot table, and the number of decimal places, etc. I stress that I know how to change the number formatting on fields, it's just that it excel does not remember it afterwards.
I thought that maybe the formulas in excel might allow one to include the formating, but I have not been able to find if this is possible, and if so, how to do it. So, for example, the following formula for a calculated field:
is there some way to conditionally change the last digit into something else entirely? 1222 should be 122.25, 1224 should be 122.50, and 1226 should be 122.75.
I am working on a concrete pour summary, I would like to have the specific codes on each tab be affected from one summary page. So when I enter a certain number on sheet 1 , it will affect that same number section that is on a different sheet. It will be adding a certain amount to that code section every time its entered. What functions need to be used to make this work..?

I have attached an example. If I have a set of numbers such as the one attached, is it possible to create a formula that will show me all the combinations of numbers that add up to 55.52? In the attached I have highlighted in different colours all the number combinations that add up to 55.52. The numbers highlighted in blue appear within more then one combination. Is there a formula that can do this for me, instead of randomly adding numbers hoping they add up to 55.52.

How to translate a specific number into a specific letter related to the number itself.
I have lots of different numbers for example all going down a specific cell (These numbers I want to separate into 3 different catagories. The positive numbers I want to be calculated as the same Letter that is next to that row directly over to the left of that cell.
So if the letter
B / cell / cell / +9 / Then I want if its a positive number like +9 to answer in the formula with the same letter (B) listed to the right in the same row in a different cell of course
B / cell / cell / -6 / Then I want if its any negative number like -6 to answer in the formula as the opposite Letter of (P) listed to the right in the same row in a different cell of course
P / cell / cell / +17 / Then I want if its a positive number like +17 to answer in the formula as the same letter (P) listed to the right in the same row in a different cell of course
P / cell / cell / -3 / Then I want if its a negative number like -3 to answer in the formula as the opposite Letter of (B) listed to the right in the same row in a different cell of course
and thirdly if its a (0) zero and only (zero's) Then I want the answer to stay (0) zero.
The number can be any numbers it doesn't matter. Only distinction is that positive number of +1 and up repeat and stay the same letter that the cell on the far left is already stated.
and all the negative number of -1 amd below all reverse the letter to the opposite letter of (B to a P) or (P to a B) listed to the right in the same row in a different cell of course
and of course (0) zero would be listed as a positive number and only return a (0) zero as the result of the formula.
I would like to create a vba script when ran an input.box comes up and asks you to "enter number you want to start numbering from" and when the number is entered in the input box. e.g "7654", excel starts numbering each cell in column A from 7654 until there is an empty cell in column B.
Can a vba macro be provided for splitting a number into digits? The number will be in Sheet 1 but splitted number will be on sheet 2. Splitting of numbers means a number entered into a cell will be splitted into different column/cells with one digit per cell.
I work in a finance department and we have MANY numbers consisting of 7 digits. Is there a way to enter in the entire number, but only display the first 4 digits?
In my worksheet there is a column with values of either 3 or 4 numbers. If the value only has 3 numbers I would like to add a space before the first number, to ensure the proper line-up when saving the sheet as a text file. How can I do this (conditional formatting or macro??)
I need a formula to extract the first two numbers and move them to the back of the number remaining. For example, the original number is 235871, the result would be 587123.
My numbers always have six digits but may at times have seven.
I am trying to work with conditional formatting to turn a field a specific color based on two conditions, one of which is variable. The first condition is a list of ongoing events (which can change) and the second condition is a set of known milestones. I want to create a control (check boxes?) that will turn a given field (which has dates in it from another calculation) to either Red, Yellow, or Green.
I was thinking two Dropdown boxes - one for the events and one for the milestones. The user would choose an event, choose the milestone, then choose a checkbox or something to change the color of a field elsewhere in the spreadsheet. Right now, I'm doing this in a very clumsy way by having three checkboxes for each milestone for each event. There are five milestones per event (so 15 checkboxes per event on Sheet2). I will likely have 70+ events so I was hoping for a better way to do this. I've done this for the first three events and need a more efficient way of doing this.
See the attachment : Event Milestones based on Go Date Uploadable.xlsx
I need to calculate the sum of digits in a numeric string. The function should keep on adding the digits of each result, till the final sum is a single digit. Please refer to the following example and result expected:-
I have a calculated field which is essentially two concatenated values (DDMMYY and sequential numbers starting from 1). I want it so that any single digits will automatically have a zero in front (e.g. 01, 02, 03 etc). The concatenating takes place in VBA so it has to be coded...
Need a formula in M2 that will count the number of digits that match in each row. The digits in H:L compared to the master list in A:A119766. The count will be from 0-5 for each row. The digits must be in same column....
I would like a function that checks an input number to see if it contains unique digits. If the digits are unique the output is 1 else the output is -1. Thus, supposing we call the function UNIQ(), we find UNIQ(15423) = 1 but UNIQ(154532) = -1. The input is always a positive integer.
I have problems in PASTING my 19 digit number from the source report into excel.
E.g, the original value is 8321515222222123122 but it always transfer to 8321515222222120000
I have tried the simple cell format setting, that is after pasting, I set the cells to text, but it doesn't help and also try the custom fomat "###################", but it is still the same result with the last 4 digit lost.
What I want the format to be is not in scientfic and have to be full display.
I having a bit of trouble entering numbers in Excel, every time I try to enter a number it seems to divide it by 100. For example : - 1 entered in to a cell becomes 0.01, 100 becomes 1....etc. I've tried formatting the cells and had no luck, tried Tool>Options but not sure where to look.
I need Excel to create Date's of Birth from following data in column A. If the data are 7 numbers long, I need to add a '0' to the start and have used the custom format of 0#######. This works fine but I need the data in column B to just display the first 4 digits. I have used =LEFT(A1,4) to do this, but it's not picking up the 0's which I've added.
