I am trying to find a way to display text that is the product of a concatenate function in a defined cell, but not to have the function itself in that cell. Basically, I want to have the below function in cell A1. I want to add a command to it to take the result and display it in cell A2.
The reason for this is that I need the cell to be selectable (it is generating a file name that needs to be selected and copied), but I don't want the code behind it to be seen. I can't find a way to make the cell selectable AND hide the formula from being seen when the cell is selected. This is because our people keep copying the formula rather than the resulting text.
I was hoping for something like a DISPLAYIN(target) function, but it doesn't seem to exist.
When I drag my VLOOKUP formula down a column in Excel 2010, the return value copies the formula result from the original VLOOKUP formula result. For example, if the first VLOOKUP returns a value of 0.5, I expect to see 0.5 or 1 in the cell below that one. However, I get 0.5 which is not the expected result for the cell below.
When, I click the fx on the cells below, the expected return values appear in the formula result. After I click OK, the expected formula results updates and now appears in the cell.
I'm not sure what is causing this issue. My computer was updated recently from an old machine to a new one. I have never experienced this issue before.
I created a simple auto numbering function whereby Cell A7 contained =Row()-6, and Cell A8 contained =(A7+1). I then shift, and pasted the contents of cell A8 until cell A600. My aim is to simply copy the increments of 1 - 600 into another column. However when i copy and paste i'm also copying the initial underlying formula ie: =( A?+1), Is there a way to copy the results, not the formula?
I can't quite get this formula to give me the correct value.

I tried defining as a Range and I can't get it to work right either way. When I hover over my r1 and r2 values the range is correct but it does have "$A$227:$A$447" quotes around the range so I think that is messing me up.
I know this is an easy one but I'm unsure why I can't easily modify a formula. The key event in this formula is "+190". Every time I change the value the formula no longer works. I've copied to another cell and the formula no longer works. My question is when you have a formula like this one if you have to modify how do you do it and keep the formula working.
Col A has a list, mixture of letters and numbers. By default excel sorts the numbers in order and then the letters. How do I display the letters A-Z first and then the numbers?!
Does anybody have a formula to use to auto enter an alphabet? With this formula I would like the last letter in the alphabet Z to be followed by AA, AB, etc. If I delete row 5 (letter E) I would need the letters to auto generate in order.
I purchased the book from Mr.Excel and got it last week called VBA and Macros for Microsoft Excel. I can't seem to find the code for macros to search through the cells and then either change the cell colour to highlight the cells that contains an alphabetical character. I am trying to remove all the characters in the cells so only the numbers are left over.
Is it possible to take a list that is alphabetized in the following manner--Jones, Mary--, convert it to Mary Jones while also removing the comma after the name?
The =TRIM and =MID formulas that I saw in another thread both seem to convert the text, but they also leave the comma at the end.
I have a long list of names and right now I have to scroll down the list like crazy to get to some of the letters (xyz for example).
I really wanted to setup a clickable row or column that has one letter in each row or column, but I'm not sure I can do that as the sheet is already formatted. But I could just use one cell where I could click in it and type a letter which would jump me to the portion of the list that starts with that letter.
or I guess maybe something that pops up a requestor for me to enter the letter.
I found some stuff that was close on here that had some of the functionality I needed, but I couldn't piece it together.
I'm trying to go through David's books, but I haven't had a lot of time and I'm not getting some of the basics.
I have a formula in the Name Define part of excel in workbook that refers to another workbook. =IF(COUNTIF([DaysWorking.xls]Sunday!$A:$A,'2009'!I1)>0,1,"")
The DaysWorking.xls workbook is a data workbook, users may change the data and after they are done, they may exit the program but not save it. The DaysWorking.xls workbook should always revert back to the original form. I've put a read only property on it, but the problem lies when the user saves the file under Save/As function. Excel then updates the link to whatever the user saves the file as. Is there a way to make sure that the formula never get's changed?
First my goal is to sum a row and column. For example i want the sum of row 1 a to row 1 g. However, I'm using a loop for an automated macro. So i want to be able to say something like cells(1, count), so during the loop count goes from 1 to 7 representing the letters in the alphabet. But I'm not sure how to do so.
Secound, in my vba script to pull information from specific pages i say "sheet1.activate" how can i had the sheet switching during the process to speed up the calculation? and last but not least,
If Cells(1, locd) = "2008" Then
When i run my script, i get a runtime error 1004 application-defined or object defined error. The weird thing is, i can move what line it is on and then the macro will run ONCE and then it breaks again with the same error for that specific piece of code.
I have a s/s which is built on IF functions and references other sheets and I have used the s/s in the past without issue. However now I want to ammend the formula a little and excel will only display the formula itself, not the result of the formula. I have tried CTRL ~ to turn on/off the show formula function but this makes no difference.
My reason for changeing the current formula is that I need to turn a 2 (numeric) to 02 (which can be either numeric or text). This is the new formula.
I have a workbook consisting of 4 worksheets. Cell B5 in each of three of these sheets has the exact same formula (copy/pasted) referring to data in the other worksheet. In one of the three similar sheets cell B5 shows up as a blank. In the other two, this cell shows up as a zero. Since the formula in each of these cells is identical, I figured the difference in the way the result showed up was a matter of cell formatting.
The cell format for each of the three is indicated as ‘general’. However, with one of these, the ‘sample’ shown when you view the cell format shows as a blank while the other two show the ‘sample’ as a zero (0). How can I go about making all three cells appear the same, namely a blank?
I have already an existing formula to get only the amount from the previous cell. From a6 to a30 it contains the word "11/05/09 press release $100", so in b6-b30 this is the formula. =IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("press",A6)),RIGHT(A6,LEN(A6)-FIND("$",A6)),"") until b30
the problem is in b6:b30 the 100's were not a number you have to copy and paste to other cells using paste special then values then click the smart tag and convert as a number to get all the total from b6 until b30.
