How To Change Source File Without Affecting VLookup Formulas

Jun 6, 2013

I have an excel file - central database - that holds a lot of raw data organized in tables. There are more than 15 files (dependent files) that access this data using VLOOKUP formulas.

I now need to add a few columns to the central database and these columns can't be after the columns already existing, i.e. they have to be on the left of some of the existing columns. Inserting those columns is going to mess up all the vlookup formulas in the dependent files.

Is there a way change the central database file without affecting the vlookup formulas in the dependent files?

Change Pivot Table Source File

Jun 12, 2007

I have a workbook with a number of pivot tables as well as the source data for each pivot table. Some of the source data sheets needed to be deleted so now if I try to refresh the corresponding pivot table I get "Connot open pivot table source file '[Std Mthly Rpt.xls]Report_2'". I recreated the source file again and would like to know if I can link the pivot table to this new source file or do I need to create a new pivot table??

Change File Path In Formulas For Every Cell In A Sheet

Oct 9, 2009

I have a master workbook that is referencing data from several other workbooks whose file names are based on the years data was taken. In the master work book on any given sheet, I would like to be able change the data being used in the formula calculations by simply changing the year value in a single cell. By changing the date value, the formulas are directed from one data workbook to another.

e.g. in the master workbook in Sheet1, if you enter 2008 into cell A1, all of the formulas in Sheet1 now pull values from 2008.xls; if 2008 was replaced with 2009 in cell A1 on Sheet1 of the master workbook, then all of the formulas on Sheet1 would now pull values from 2009.xls.As I am completely new to VBA (bought my first book last night), I am looking for any help that is out there. I am not entirely new to programming (used C++ to write numerical simulations) but I have zero experience writing macros and the like.

Macro/function To Take Data From Source File Into Base File

Jun 24, 2006

I have a base excel file for summarizing some data, the problem is that the data comes from a different excel spreadsheet. What I want to do is make a function that pulls the data from another spreadsheet into my base file. It would be easy if it were just one excel sheet, but this job would require where the data is pulled from a data file which has many modified versions.

Can anyone tell me how to do this? The files with the data will be structured the exact same but with different data entered in. I just want a button so I can click the file I want the data from and have it show up on my summarizing base file.

Chart Not Updating When Source Formulas Calculate

Feb 22, 2008

I have the same question as described in Graphs Not Updating When Source Data Updated; however, the poster did not reply to the request-for-clarification questions.

My chart does not always update when my source data changes. My Calculations setting is Automatic (not Manual). There is no macro code working to produce the source data or the chart. My chart is on the same worksheet as my source data. The source data is simple links to other cells in the same workbook that update as the underlying data is updated. Saving doesn't work. Manually calculating (F9) doesn't work. The only way I have found to get the correct data to display in the charts is to open the Source Data and re-enter the Series range. Obviously, that gets old.

VBA -Determine Last Row Of Source Data Tab For Use In Executing Formulas In Template Tab

May 7, 2008

I am currently building a workbook with 2 tabs.

The first is a data dump tab. The number of rows used in this tab will change each time it is used.

The second tab currently has a header row and in cells A2-H2 are formulas based on data in the first tab.

I am creating a macro to autofill those formulas, but I don't know how to determine what is the last row of data in the 1st tab and use that as reference in my macro.

Using Cell References In File Paths For Formulas To Create Dynamic Formulas

Dec 3, 2013

I am using a lot of linked reports that have to be rewritten each month. For example smaller formulas look like this:

=('S:PUBLICProductionJob CardsMOLDING201311 November[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]Production Parts'!B$228*2)+'S:PUBLICProductionJob CardsMOLDING201311 November[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]Production Parts'!B$262+'S:PUBLICProductionJob CardsMOLDING201311 November[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]Production Parts'!B$292

What I want to do is extract the file path from the above formula and make it a composite of several cell references.

So what I need is to have a cell where they can change the month and another where we can change the year. So I set up several named cells that look like this:

_MONTH =11 November
_YEAR =2013
_JOBCARD ='S:PUBLICProductionJob CardsMOLDING
_PATH =_JOBCARD & _YEAR &"" &_MONTH

I tried several versions, I am hoping for something like this:

=('_PATH &"[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]"Production Parts'!B$228*2)+'_PATH &"[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]"Production Parts'!B$262+'_PATH &"[440A SIDE SPOILER JOB CARD.xls]"Production Parts'!B$292

Vlookup Not Selecting Source Data

Feb 12, 2010

I am having trouble with a number of workbooks when using vlookup (using the wizard rather than entering the formula directly)

First I select the cell with lookup value, then try to select the table array on the source sheet but the cursor changes to the hand symbol and I can't click on any cells. I have had this problem with many different workbooks. The only solution I have found is to copy the whole sheet, paste-special-values into a new sheet and use that as source.

Inserting VLookup With Variable Source Name With VBA?

Feb 23, 2012

I'm trying to create a macro that will open automatically generated report outputs and manipulate the data.

The macro will run from it's own workbook (Report Macro.xls), sheets / cells within this workbook are available as 'helpers'.

So far what I have working ok is;

Via a browse dialogs in a userform in Report Macro.xls I select 5 different report outputs. I'm storing the full filename & path in Sheet Data, Cells B1:B6 (B1 being the filename & path to the macro file). In column C I have just the filename

The first file is opened and manipulated as required. The next thing I need to do with it is to open the second file (filename / path in B3) and put a Vlookup in cell 02 of the first file which will look for data in the second (the second file will only ever have a single sheet).

As a formula I'd be using

Code:
=VLOOKUP(A2,'Email 22FEB12.XLS'!$B$7:$C$13120,2,FALSE)
In VBA if I use;

Code:
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=VLOOKUP(RC[-14],'Email 22FEB12.XLS'!R7C2:R13120C3,2,FALSE)"
It works great. However, the second filename will change and I need to take it from the macro file, sheet 'Data', cell 'C3'.

How can I use the contents of sheet Data, cell C3 in the VBA code above instead of the filename being hard-coded?

I have reviewed all sheets and some links just no longer exist, however when I try to break the link or change the source nothing happens. Change Chart Source Range

Jun 14, 2007

My spreadsheet has multiple charts, each referencing a dynamic named range as its source data (e.g. "California1", "California2", etc). Each named range contains multiple series. I would like to make it easy for a single chart to quickly adjust to display different named ranges (e.g. view the chart with "California1" data, then update the same chart to view "California2" data).

I'd like to do this without having to right-click on the chart, select Source Data, and then type in "California2" as the Data Range. My question: is there a way to make the chart's Source Data Range dynamic so that I can quickly select the named range that I want to display? For example, would it be possible to tie the Data Range to a separate cell so that if I typed "California2" into that cell the chart would know to use that named range as its new source data?

Pivot Summation And Change In Sum When Source Value Changed

Nov 26, 2013

Am currently working on an excel sheet that has values in multiple columns and rows. Simple example would be like

Assume two columns , with column One having a dropdown list to select the value ,

Pencil 2
Paper 3
Pencil 3
Eraser 3
Pencil 3

I want the data to be created in another sheet as

Pencil - 8
Paper - 3
Eraser - 3

I understand that this can be done through pivot table but the issue is when I change the quantity of the item in the source , say reduce pencil by 1 , the same should be reflected in the summation sheet as well automatically .

Change Source Data Of Graph With Combobox?

Apr 17, 2013

I have an 'in-cell dropdown' which looks up two values, Q1 and Q2 I have a range of data by month showing a specific number as below e.g

Month
Count
2012-01
120
2012-02
190
2012-03
200
2012-04
150
2013-05
175

I have a Line graph using this entire table as the source data. What I would like to do is only use part of the data based on what the dropdown cell specifies. For example, if it is set to "Q1", I would like just the 2012-01 and 2012-02 data to show in the graph. If its "Q2", I would like only 2013-03 and 2012-04 data to show in the graph.

Concat Two Cells In The Source Worksheet And Vlookup Into The Defs Sheet

Aug 26, 2009

I've used vlookup before but his #REF problem has me stumped.

I want to concat two cells in the Source worksheet and vlookup into the Defs sheet, but I keep getting #REF(G4:G6) when I want to return the 2nd column in the Defs sheet. What's curious is when I modify the vlookup to return the 1st column I correctly get the lookup cells(G6:G9).

What's wrong with the formula in G4.

My requirement is I can't change the format of the Source worksheet because it contains macros that work with ERwin. And it is MUCH bigger than the attached sample so I will copy/paste the formula down 6000+ cells.

Using VBA To Open And Close Source File

Feb 1, 2010

I am working with a bunch of files to do a dashboard. I have the main file which shows end results and what my users will see "Dashboard". I have about 10-15 files which I export weekly from MS Access. and I have the "Dashboard Data" file. In this file I have a sheet which links all the information for the files exported from MS Access. In here I have named ranges and dynamic ranges plus additional columns created to look up information in other tables. I use this file as my source data for my Dashboard File so that I can reduce the size of the actually dashboard. Dashboard Data file is about 5.5 mb and my Dashboard is 300kb. I have 12 branches that need to view the data over a radius of a hundred miles so the smal file are better.

My problem: I can get the Dashboard Data file to update without opening all the 10-15 other files. I cant however make the Dashboard file update without opening the Dashboard Data file. I have it to auto update without prompting but its still tells me that it cannot update. I was wondering if there is some VBA code I could use that would work like this:

I open the Dashboard File, Dashboard Data file opens so that Dashboard file updates and then close Dashboard Data File so that the user never has to see the Dashboard Data file. I dont want them to see it or have access to it.
