Indirect Using Dynamic Range Not Working

Dec 27, 2012

In the example I have attached there are two sheets, Details and DataTables. There are also a number of named ranges, both static and dynamic, that refer to data on the DataTables sheet. Most of the static ranges were added for debugging purposes. The tables have been shortened for this example.

On the Details sheet column A has a drop down that allows you to select the make of a device. Column B builds its drop down list based on what is selected in column A. The data validation in B2 uses a named dynamic range and the drop down does not work. The data validation in C2 used a named static range and the drop down works.

Column C will fill in the RU value based on what is selected in column B. Cell C3 uses named dynamic range and it does not work. Cell C4 uses named static range and it works.

I would like to used named dynamic ranges if possible so when data is added to the tables the named dynamic ranges will self adjust. Can what I want to do be done?

INDIRECT Not Working For Dynamic Named Range In SUMPRODUCT

Feb 11, 2012

The formula is =SUMPRODUCT((Group="A")*(Project_Description="Long Term")*(Profile="B")*(INDIRECT(B9)="x"))

B9 through M9 have header text Jan_2012, Feb_2012...Dec_2012. Basically my aim is to get the above formula working before I drag it across so that the named ranges get picked up automatically from the headers.

Jan_2012 thru Dec_2012 are dynamic named ranges using INDEX (and not OFFSET as someone mentioned OFFSET is a volatile function).

The above SUMPRODUCT formula is giving me a #REF! error for the (INDIRECT(B9)="x") part. I know that because when I replace it with (Jan_2012="x") it works fine.

I realized while writing this that it may be because the named range in Jan_2012 is not the same size as that of other arrays. [but it is the same size - I've re-confirmed just now]

INDIRECT Function Not Working Inside MATCH With Dynamic Ranges

Mar 25, 2014

I am getting a #REF error when using an INDIRECT function within a MATCH function to check against a dynamic named range. Basically, I am trying to get the row reference so that I can go back and extract other data from the row (in a table contained in another sheet) into the current worksheet.

I attach an example file for reference. The issue arises when a Dynamic Named Range is used. In the example file, if a value from a static range is chosen, the match with indirect function works, but it fails with the dynamic range.

Excel 2010 :: Dynamic Range Not Working Properly

Had been using this formula for almost 3 years, recently the formula didn't work properly as the range goes down halfway only instead of to the last data in the column. I'm using Excel 2010 now.

Indirect Dropdown List Not Working?

Dec 18, 2013

I can't work out why my indirect drop down list isn't working. I have named ranges and it works for the first couple but not for the rest.

Tab called 'Work record' is where the drop down lists are. 'Work Type' drop down works fine. Description only works when I select 'Doors' under 'Work type'.

INDIRECT And Dynamic Named Ranges

Feb 3, 2010

I have a dynamic named rage "AREA" which can contains values like "Area1, Area2, Area3, ..."

For each item in list AREA I have another dynamic named range, named exactly as the item, so for example I have a dynamic named range "AREA1" with values "SubArea1.1, SubArea1.2, ..." and also a dynamic named range "AREA2" with values "SubArea2.1, SubArea2.2, ..." and so on, I think it's pretty clear and straight forward (I am modelling the fact to have several areas and each of them has several sub areas).

Now, I have cell A1 being validated against the list AREA, that is, the source for A1 is "=AREA", so that I can choose one of the values in the named range AREA; I also have cell A2 being validated against the list that I choose in cell A1 using the INDIRECT function, that is, the source for A2 is "=INDIRECT(A1)".

I have already realised that this approach for cell A2 does not work, as it seems that INDIRECT does not work for dynamica named cells.

An option would be using the following for the source of A2: ....

SUMPRODUCT / INDIRECT Functions Not Working With ROW Reference When Combined

Apr 4, 2014

Basically I have an equation:

=SUMPRODUCT(G9:G11,H9:H11)/SUM(G9:G11)

It's just a simple percentage calculator for my purposes and works fine as is. However, I want to make it dynamic whereby from a user input the length of the array will increase or decrease, e.g. G9-G11 will become G9-G12 if there are four rows occupied with data. For all my other SUMming equations I have solved this and even came up with what I think is a perfectly valid solution for this one. The one problem is that it doesn't work when combined into a single equation.

My solution for the upper part of the fraction is this:

"A1"=SUMPRODUCT(INDIRECT("G9:G"&MIN(ROW(G9)+A8-1)),INDIRECT("H9:H"&MIN(ROW(H9)+A8-1)))

Where the user inputs the number of rows used in A8.

The solution for the lower part of the fraction is this:
"A2"=SUM(INDIRECT("G9:G"&ROW(G9)+A8-1))

[code]....

Dynamic Cell Reference In Indirect Formula

Oct 11, 2011

I need making a dynamic cell reference in an indirect formula, which looks at a different workbook.

The other workbook is called: ESF.xlsx
The sheet name in the other workbook is defined in Cell B2
The first cell i need to pull across is B115.

In cell B8, This is what i have so far:

=INDIRECT("[ESF.xlsx]"&B2&"!"&"B115")

How do i make it so that i can copy this formula quickly, but so only the row and column reference change?

Like in C8 i would want it to look at cell C115, In C9, id want it to look at C116 etc.

Average Multiple Indirect From Dynamic List

Dec 18, 2012

I have a list of named cells (i.e. Group1, Group2, Group3, etc)

I have a form control that allows the user to select which of the groups they would like to include.

I need to create a series of formulas that average the price of all the chosen groups. So if they just want to average Group1, Group3, Group5 they could do so by simply selecting the checkboxes associated with those names.

I am struggling to be able to create a formula which will look at the list of chosen values and Average only those names. If all groups were chosen this would be easy as I would simply use the:=Average(indirect(a1),indirect(a2)...and so on. However that assumes that I always know which values are being chosen. I have a fixed list of choices but if they don't choose one of the options then the indirect statement will be referencing a null value which than either returns to me a #REF or will factor in a '0' which then throws off the average.

COUNTIF, INDIRECT And Dynamic Named Ranges

COUNTIFS And INDIRECT Function - Formula Not Working And Keep Getting Error Message?

=SUMPRODUCT(COUNTIF(INDIRECT("'"&MySheets&"'!E8"),"Fully implemented"))

This works perfectly, except that I really need COUNTIFS... I want Excel to count either "Fully implemented" or "Partially implemented" when in E8. I cannot get the formula to work and keep getting an error message.

=SUMPRODUCT(COUNTIFS(INDIRECT("'"&MySheets&"'!E8"),"Fully implemented",(INDIRECT("'"&MySheets&"'!E8"),"Partially implemented")))

Dynamic Named Ranges And Indirect Data Validation INCOMPATIBLE?

Sep 25, 2009

I can use a dynamic named range and a direct reference to the name and the DV works.

I can use a standard named range (not dynamic) and an INDIRECT() reference to a cell with the name of the range in it and the DV works.

But if I try to use a dynamic named range and an indirect reference to a cell with the name of the range in it, the DV fails.

Any workarounds out there? This project includes a LOT of DV lists, getting them to self-maintain is important if I can do it.

Dynamic Named Ranges Using Match / Address And Indirect Functions

Dec 17, 2012

I am having an issue when I try a chart a named range. The named range "Refers To" is

Code:
=OFFSET($A$1,(MATCH("Kevin",$A:$A,0)-1),,,COUNTA(INDIRECT(ADDRESS((MATCH("Kevin",$A:$A,0)-1),1,1,1)
&":"&ADDRESS((MATCH("Kevin",$A:$A,0)-1),100,1,1))))

As far as I can tell, the formula works just fine. If you look in the Name Manager and check on that Name, the highlighted box shows up exactly what it should and if you do a simple MAX test, it displays the correct MAX value from that range.

The problem comes in when I try and add it to a chart. Instead of a displaying all the values in the range, it displays nothing. Doesn't flag up any errors, just nothing.

The reason I chose to do it this way is that the table contents could change on a daily basis and so could the position of the row and I don't want to have to keep changing the references in the graph so make sure the right data is being displayed. Is it just that charts don't play well with the INDIRECT function?

VLOOKUP With INDIRECT (become Dynamic As The Table Array Part Of The Vlookup Will Change)

Aug 18, 2009

I have a Vlookup which I want to modify so that it can become dynamic as the table array part of the vlookup will change.

So the basic vlookup is as follows:
=VLOOKUP($R$3,ATTRIBUTION_FACTSET!$M$60:$P$73,2,0)
but the data I am looking for wont always be in the range M60:P73.

So I tried to make it dynamic by doing the following:
=VLOOKUP($R$3,INDIRECT("ATTRIBUTION_FACTSET"&"!M"&U1&":P"&V1),2,FALSE)
The idea being that U1 and V1 would be numbers that can change so in this case U1 would equal 60 and V1 would equal 73

This vlookup is giving me #N/A and no matter how I modify it I cannot get it to work.

I tested it as I went along, so I know it was working. Then I worked on several other tasks (copying the range to another location on the sheet, making graphs from the ranges). Now when I go back to run this again, I get: Run-time error '1004':
method 'Range' of object '_Global' failed. I went and looked what I thought were my named ranges, and they were wrong (not dynamic, just a cell reference). I deleted them and tried again with same error.

Indirect 3-D Range Summation

Dec 5, 2006

I was trying to assist someone with 3D referencing and summing, but getting stuck on referencing text based sheetnames.

We are trying to sum range A1:A10 in the sheets between the range defined by A1:A2

Now, if the Sheet names were numerically sequenced, eg. Sheet1, Sheet2, etc...then we could use this formula with no problem

=SUMPRODUCT(SUMIF(INDIRECT("'Sheet"&ROW(INDIRECT(A1&":"&A2))&"'!A1:A10"),""))
where A1 and A2 housed the numbers 1 and 2, respectively,

but what if the sheets are text based? Is there a way....say the Sheets were named SheetX, SheetY, SheetZ....

I did some searching on the internet and found samples only with the numeric based sheetnames.

Dynamic Dropdown List And Calculation Number Of Working Days / Weeks Remaining

Oct 30, 2013

I'm currently trying to set up a sheet ...

When setting up a Direct Debit There are 3 options, the 7th, 17th and 27th. I've put these into a drop down list. I need this list to be slightly dynamic. I must allow 10 working days from the date of the arrangment before I can apply the DD.

To explain further. If someone were to want to set up a DD and spoke to me today. If they then requested the DD be taken on the 7th, I wouldn't be able to set it up until the 7th of December as 10 working days are required. I'd like the list to reflect this. I can do it in OO with a simple if / switch but excel is a strange creature and I'm not sure how to approach the problem.

From that I think I also need to calculate the number of weeks remaining in the current financial year. I think I should be able to do this by using the Today() function and some maths.

Relative Indirect Formula To SUM Range

Feb 13, 2008

I am using VB in Excel to write a formula for summing a column of numbers that will vary in length. I have been using the Indirect formula and have the start and end cells of the range identified in another location. My problem is, the macro in vb is sending the Indirect formula to the cells containing the start and end points by using relative functions ie. go across 30 columns and up 10 rows to get start cell. I wanted it to just save the cell location of the start and end points.
EG.

VB formula is: "= SUM(INDIRECT(R[-23]C[27]&R3C29):INDIRECT(R[-23]C[27]&R3C30))"
whereas I just want it to read "=Sum(Indirect(C4&D5):INDIRECT(C4&D6))"

where cell C4 gives the column letter and D5 the row number of the start of the range and C4 and D6 give the column letter and row number of the end of the range.

Indirect Function To Reference A Named Range

Apr 30, 2009

How would I used the indirect function to reference a named range in the workbook in formula creation.

For instance, if in cell A1 I have entered the text "Sales" which is also a named range in the workbook. Then in cell A2 I tried entering the following formula to sum based on the entry in cell A1 using the indirect funtion. For instance:

=sum(indirect(A1))

In this instance I was hoping this formula would then sum the amounts in the "Sales" named range. And, if I changed the text in cell A1 to "Cost" for instance (another named range in the workbook), it would sum the amounts in the "Cost" named range. Allowing for a dynamic formula based on the entry in cell A1.

I'm using Excel 2007.

INDIRECT Function To Lookup Values On A Range Of Other Worksheets

Jan 17, 2014

I am trying to use the INDIRECT function to look up values on a range of other worksheets. I have a column of data in col A which is essentially a lot of different worksheet names. On each worksheet I need to use VLOOKUP to find a value.

Easier to show formulas. This is an example of what I want to recreate:

=VLOOKUP(O2, test!B3:C13,2,FALSE)

I want to replace the text "test" with the text in column A. So the first INDIRECT formula looks like this:

=INDIRECT("VLOOKUP(O2, " &A1& "!B3:C13,2,FALSE)")

Which to me looks like it should work but I get a #REF! error. I've tried various permutations, e.g. having the INDIRECT part of the formula located in a different place (next to the "test" text) but run in to similar issues.
