Lookup (counts The Number Of Items Which Match Criteria Set By The User)

Aug 30, 2009

=LOOKUP($C1,$A1:$A1,$B1:$B1)

Though i wanted to rid the Na error from it when C is blank

I seen a few ways, And wanted to try the method of using Countif becouse it can be used withen the same cell without using extra cells like another method i seen "=IF(ISNA(A1),0,A1)"

what i know of countif
This function counts the number of items which match criteria set by the user.
=IF(COUNTIF($A1,"")),LOOKUP($C1,$A1:$A1,$B1:$B1),"")

so how the heck can the countif function be used to rid the NA of a lookup. i just cant see a relationship between counting a lookup.

Counts The Number Of Hours That This Person Works & Lookup Function

Jan 25, 2008

I'm trying to create a work Rota and I'm having a bit of a problem with a certain section. In Worksheet 1 I have the following headings:

Cell A - Name
Cell B - Monday
Cell C - Tuesday
Cell D - Wednesday
etc

Under these headings is each member of staff and the hours they work, IE L (Late), E (Early), SD (Short Day) etc. In the final Column, it counts the number of hours that this person works (Early is 7.5). In Rows 46, there is a section here to work out how many people are working earlys, which is where I have the problem.

The hours are worked out by doing a lookup function on the cell that says E, L etc and goes to a CODES sheet and pulls the value of that letter. What I am wanting to do is lookup that Letter, which and look in the cell next to it and count how many people would be on an early etc.

Formula That Counts Number Of Unique Text Values If Meets Criteria

Nov 6, 2013

I have been using this function to count the number of unique text values in a data set:

=SUM(IF(FREQUENCY(MATCH(B2:B10,B2:B10,0),MATCH(B2:B10,B2:B10,0))>0,1))

It works great if I want to count number of unique text values overall. However, I want to count the occurrences of unique text values if they meet specific criteria. (Like a countifs function would if it could count unique text).

Index & Match Multiple Items/Criteria: Finding The Nth Occurrence

Jun 25, 2008

I've read the how to for finding the nth occurrence using index/match but the example given does not really help solve my issue. The file I've attached is a condensed version of the actual file, which has more columns but I deleted all but the necessary ones for clarity. What I am trying to accomplish:

On sheet1 there are three columns, Business, Amount, and Closing Date.

Not all the business names have a closing date and the spreadsheet is sorted alphabetically by business name, so sorting by closing date, and using the method used in the topic " find the nth occurrence in excel", is not an option.

On sheet2, I would like to see ALL the business names that have a closing date in the respective month, as opposed to just the first. Then to the right of the business names I have the sum of all the amounts in that month, but I figured out how to get that one already.

Offset Match (two Criteria Lookup)

Aug 7, 2009

In the attached workbook, the following formula appears in column B of the "dropdown" tab. I want to basically do a two criteria lookup, using the values in column A and the value of cell B1, which is a dropdown based on a dynamic range consisting of the company names on the Discounts tab.(starting with cell E1, extending rightward) To make this easier for testing purposes, I'm curretly using cell E1 instead of B1, which is just text.

It seems like this ought to work, but somehow it doesn't:

=OFFSET(Discounts!$B$1,(MATCH($E$1,Discounts!$C$1:$AA$1,0)),(MATCH(A5,Discounts!$B$2:$B$200,0)),1,1)

SUMPRODUCT With 2 Criteria, But One Is A Maximum Number Of Items To Include

Jan 14, 2009

I have no problems figuring out SUMIF or SUMPRODUCT with multiple criteria, but I'm trying to help someone with an issue that the second criteria is actually not all-inclusive.

Column B - Lots of numbers, the SUM range
Column C - Yes and No flags. Y or N

C1 = maximum number of matching items to include.

So, =SUMPRODUCT((C2:C100="Y")*(B2:B100)) sums up ALL the Yes rows, but the guy wants to restrict it to the last X matches, and put that X factor in C1. So if C1=5, only the last 5 Y matches are included.

Multiple Criteria Lookup With Date Range Match?

Dec 30, 2008

I am trying to create a formula that will lookup multiple criteria within a table, one of those criteria being a date that falls within a certain date range. The purpose of the data is for billing tenants and owners in a building. I have successfully been able to use Index Match to lookup 2 criteria, one of them being a specific date match (see my attachment). However, I need to add a third criteria looks up the date that falls between a specific date range. The concept is to run a query where I enter a Unit (apartment) number into one cell, a Billing Date into another cell and the Type (Owner or Tenant) into a third cell to determine the Name of the person who fits these criteria... Criteria A Lives in Apt XX, Criteria B Who's lease start date and end date is inclusive of the Billing Date that I entered and Criteria C who matches the Type of customer, either Owner or Tenant.

Multiple Criteria Lookup With Date Range Match

Oct 12, 2012

I'm trying to create a formula that will lookup multiple criteria within a table, however the problem I am having is that one of the criteria needs to fall within a certain a date range. I've used index & match to look up the dates when they match exactly, but how to return the same value for when they fall within a date.

I have attached the spreadsheet - Date Range.xlsx! The requirement is to get the correct "pay" from the "Contingent Workers" sheet to the Timesheet sheet. So it will match the Employee ID, but also the date on the Timesheet tab will fall between/or be the exact date indicated on the contingent workers tab.

Populating Combobox 2 With Items That Match Criteria From Combobox 1

Mar 30, 2009

Am trying to get dynamic population of 2nd combobox based on match from criteria in combobox 1.

if column a = bears and column b = colours of bears then

when I select bears in combobox one, combobox 2 would populate with colors of bear.

I am think of having a combobox 1 change event that evaluates each row in a specific range (does it match the criteria?) if so, then add 2nd cell (column b) of that row to the combobox 2.

I know it would probably involve match and offset, add item and loop, but I am not sure what the syntax is.

Explanation For Formula That Counts Number Of Numeric Characters

Nov 21, 2012

The formula below was posted recently as a way to extract a numeric substring from somewhere in larger string. When I first saw this formula, how it "came up with the goods" and so I spent some time looking at parts of it to see what they did.

Although I've made some progress, I still don't fully understand it. Heres the formula, and below Ive detailed how far I've got:

=Iferror(lookup(9.99e+307,--mid(a1,min(find({1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0},a1&1234567890)),row(indirect("1:"&len(a1))))),0)

I hope my findings below are correct:

1. The formula is returning the first substring of contiguous numeric characters from the full string in Cell A1
2. 9.99e + 307 ensures that the search value won't be exceeded by the returned value.
3. The Mid function uses Min(Find( to get the character position of the first numeric in A1 (so MID then has its first 2 parameters). So far so good.
4. Now... I cant work out where MID parameter 3 (the substring length) comes from. I suspect its the row function, but can't see how as this isn't an array formula, and without CTRL+Shift+ Enter, I could only get Row to return 1 in my experiments (giving me only the first substring digit).

How does the formula return the correct number of numeric characters, (apparently) without counting them?

Fastest Lookup Method: Use A Key To Lookup A Value (VLookup, Index/Match, DGet, And The Rest)

Theoretically, it would be most efficient to use a branch table (also known as a jump table). See the wikipedia article for branch tables: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Branch_table. Does Excel/VBA have a way to create a branch table for such lookups?

LOOKUP / MATCH Function To Lookup The Owner Name Typed In Cell

Jan 2, 2009

I have a workbook with 2 different types of sheet - 1 containing source data and the others 'collecting' data from the source sheet, depending on what the sheet is for.

For example, the data source contains different pets, their names, ages and their owners.

The other sheets are on a one-per-owner basis.

What I would like to do is use a LOOKUP / MATCH function to lookup the owner name typed in cell A1 of the output sheet and match it with the corresponding owner name(s) on the source sheet. I would then like it to return with each pet and append the results on the sheet accordingly - like below:

John Smith (in cell A1)

Pet - Name - Age
-------------------
Dog - Rover - 3
Goldfish - Tom - 1
Gerbil - Chewit - 4
