Obtaining List Of Worksheet Names For INDIRECT Function
Jun 11, 2008
I am familiar with the use of the INDIRECT function to retrieve data from different sheets in a workbook. However, is there a simple way of obtaining a list of all sheet names in a workbook (I have about 50) rather than typing them into the sheet individually?
I can see them in the workbook properties but can't copy and paste them.

Attached I have a document where I am wanting all of the individual sheet names on the Total page. Rather than having to change each formula to match the sheet name I believe there is a way to reference the sheet name column (AO) in the formula so you can drag it down to fill in the columns. I am basic with Excel and do not know how to add this indirect function into my current formulas.

I have a worksheet with a name that inckudes a hyphen, e.g. 1234-5678.
And I have the worksheet name in a cell, say, I!.
Using
=INDIRECT(I$1&"!YADDA")
I get a REF error because of the inclusion of the hyphen in the worksheet name.
How can I fix this without eliminating the hyphen?

I am using a data-validation-list with =INDIRECT(B7) as the source. It works as expected except for after the file has been closed and reopened. When it is reopened, the source is changed to =INDIRECT(#REF!).
I have tried =INDIRECT('Worksheetname'!B7) but same result.

I have a dynamic validation list (see attached) which will not accept the indirect function as a formula in the listbox.
Using the named range on its own works fine, but using the indirect generates an error.

A post about skipping rows is very similar to my situation, but I'm stuck on how to translate that for columns. (Filling formulas but need to skip cells)
I'd like to transfer information from a worksheet called "Raw Data" to another sheet, skipping every 5th column. I'd like to go from "Raw Data" B12 to a new sheet C6, then from "Raw Data" G12 to D6 in the new sheet, and so forth.
I figured out that I'll need to use COLUMN()*5-13 as a component of the function, but I can't seem to figure out how to format the name of the worksheet correctly, with the ampersand and quotation marks.
This doesn't work at all, but I think it's in the ballpark...
=INDIRECT("Raw Data!"(COLUMN()*5)-13)&12)

determining the correct formula to lookup various details from multiple worksheet:
Data as follows:
Sheet1: input
AB1MonthSales2AUG55003MAY4000
Sheet2: Data
AB1MonthSales2JAN20003FEB25004MAR30005APR35006MAY40007JUN45008JUL50009AUG550010SEP600011OCT650012NOV700013DEC7500
b2,b3 Formula = Indirect(Address(match(a2,????,0),1,1,1,"Data"))
i dont know what is the correct range inside the match fuction to identiy the row number inside the Data sheet, i think the solution would be match(a2,Data!a2:a13,0) but things might get complicated if you have multiple worksheet such as sheet2: Data , sheet3: Data2, sheet3: Data 3
and each table has unsorted details compared to others sheets (Data vs Data 2)

The function below should return the value in a cell IF the string in the cell two cells to the left of it is "Nemo" Omitting the part highlighted in blue, my function returns a list of unique values...but when it's included, nothing is returned at all. Perhaps, there is an error in the syntax that I'm overlooking?

I am trying to develop an Indirect Indirect Validation drop down list. Example, Building - Floor - Room, i.e. Select Building from a Validation drop down list. Then based upon the Building selected, select only the Floors applicable to the Building Selected. I am able to achieve this via an Indirect Validation drop down. However, when I attempt to then select the Rooms applicable to the Floor of the Building I selected, I can not produce an Indirect Validation off a previous Indirect Validation.
In the attachment, I have used Plant - Location - Room. I have name ranged the selections, and have used Validations Lists for Plant, and Indirect Validations for Location. The error occurs where I attempt to do an Indirect Validation for Room.

Im still pretty new toi VBA and im struggling with pulling data from another worksheet and placing it into a list. Below is the code currently I think I have identified were its not working but not sure what to do. the code should essentially do the following
on opening the workbook check CS PS data worksheet find the names of people within the sheet, These start at row six and the step between each is 82 it then should input these names one after another in the following range Range("AO3:AO43") one name per cell until the end of the dat,a it seems to run but only inputs the first name in the first cell even thought it picks up each name in the myformula piece
Within the myformula there is a concatenate piece to flip the names to opposite way round I think this is where is not working possibly something to do with the separators? each name is in the format surname, firstname it should flip it so it shows first name [space] last name
provide ive commented out the piece I think is the issue
Sub CSupdate_()
With Application
.Calculation = xlManual
.ScreenUpdating = False

I have an excel workbook with a dynamic dependent drop down list setup, works a treat on the first worksheet i set it up on.
However here's the problem, my workbook contains a good handful of worksheets each named to reflect the certificate on the page, i need the drop down list to work on each tab. problem is when i setup the index/match function it requires a specific sheet name to make it work i.e.
=INDEX(Table1,0,MATCH(PI!$C20,Table1[#Headers],0))
However what i need it to do is reference the worksheet name, as new ones get added and names may change, something like
=INDEX(Table1,0,MATCH(&ActiveSheet.Name&$C20,Table1[#Headers],0))
However this doesn't work, i do have a cell on each page that holds the Sheet name using the function:
=MID(CELL("filename",A1),FIND("]",CELL("filename",A1))+1,256)
But I cant even get it to use that cell as a reference in my formula.

I currently have a workbook that copies the first sheet and emails it to an individual on the first day of the week.
New requirements are for it to be sent to a list of people.
I am at an impasse on how to proceed due to lack of knowledge. The current code obtains the recipient from Sheet3 D4 and i would like to be able to list down this column for additional emails without restricting this to a set number of cells.
I have searched the forum and have been unable to find what i am after.
I have included a test file to show what i have so far.
We use Outlook 2k3
We use Excel 2k3

I have over 35 sheets in this file with different names. Is there a way to export all the sheet names in list format so that I don't have to go back and forth in the file and type the names?

I am desperately in need of a macro that will count the number of items in column A of each worksheet and then summarize the results next to the names of the worksheets (i.e. in two adjacent columns) on Sheet 1 of the book. Obviously, Sheet 1 needs to be ignored by the macro.

I'm using Excel 2010. I have a workbook that has six or seven worksheets in it. Each worksheet has a header row, and then lists of clients at the clinic where I work. The columns are last name, first name, medicaid #, social security #, DOB. We use these lists every month to verify that each client has Medicaid for the month. Therefore, there are also columns with names like April, May, June where we mark yes or no for each client. Some of the worksheets also have information about the clients' guardian, phone number, etc., but not every worksheet has those. (I can't show you the worksheets b/c of federal privacy laws, of course.)
I really, really want a worksheet that's a master list of the data from each of the existing worksheets, and I'd like to keep it synced to the source worksheets. I'd love it if I could also add a column telling me which of the source worksheets the data originally came from.
I've tried a few things to make it happen, but nothing has worked.
I've tried using the Consolidate function built into Excel as well, but that only works with numbers, not text, and it wants to manipulate the numbers instead of just copying them over.
I've found several macros online that should have worked (including one from this site) but that I wasn't able to install to my worksheet. I followed all the steps for installation, and throught it worked, but when I went back to the Excel file to run the macro, the list of available macros remained emptpy.
Is it possible that corporate IT has disabled the ability to install macros? Is there somewhere in Options were I need to go to turn Macros on?

I have a database output file where one of the columns contains managers names, often more than once. I want to apply an autofilter on manager name and then copy the result to another sheet or sheets. My criteria for the autofilter is a variable pointing to a list of names that at present I maintain by hand; a for-each-next loop then cycles through the names.
What I would like to do, before running the autofilter code, is to create the list of names via code. This would then automatically pickup names that are missing.
The code I have so far is below:
Public Sub find_managers()
Dim managers1 As Range
Dim names1 As Range
Dim n1 As Variant
Dim n2 As Variant
In my mind it should check the names in the unique list against the imported list and add any missing names.

I have 3 related dropdown lists that work perfectly, if you enter data from left to right. But, if you click in the cell containing the second list, which is based on the first list, of which nothing has been selected, you can just type any value in the cell. Is there a way to prevent this, or at least validate that what is entered is a value in the list.

I need to compare two lists of client names. One list has 59k names to be compared to second list of 1000 names.
The list of 59k are listed in column D and the other list is in Column E. I tried conditional formatting but unfortunately some of the names are slightly different I.e. fair point communications vs fair point communications inc. I was trying to put in v lookup with a trim function but it didn't seem to be working.

1. Using a formula, I am trying to to obtain a list of unique values (string) (caveat: see #2) from the range E2:E10000 (arbitrarily chose 10000 - the row number is variable)(see #3).
I currently have a formula that seems to work for this purpose but I don't know how to add the condition in #2 (below)
2. To include all unique string values except those starting with the letters "IC"
3. Is there a way to make this formula so that it can only seek values up to the last row, and not go to the 10000th row if not necessary? The E column has no empty cells until after the last row that contains data.
Here is the formula I currently use which serves #1 (above):
[Code] .....
Any way to improve/simplfy this formula for the purpose describbed in #1? How can I add the condition in #2? Can you see a way to include #3? The most important issue here is #2.
Example of desired results:
Column A | Column B
AA | AA
DD | CC
AA | DD
CC |
DD |
DD |
IC |
IC |

I have a long customer listing, names 5 to 36 characters and several with their location in the name as well as a few common duplicate names. I am trying to produce sheet where the customers name once selected opens in the customers spreadsheet and data can be added/amended for sales etc.The lists are not in alphabetical order as when created a customer number is automatically allocated. My aim is just to type in the first letter of the name and the dropdown appears the customer is selected and their card appears. I have tried data validation, lookup, vlookup, Dropdown and Match/find. they only return the first record found and no sign of any others. Find returned all instances of the letter appearing in every name.

I am using Excel 2003 and Windows XP.
I have been given a list of my firm’s target clients (in excel) and an opportunities report (exported into excel) from our CRM system, which lists all the opportunities (i.e. opportunities to sell/provide products/services) that have been created for each client. Some of the column headings in the opportunities report are as follows:
Client; Opportunity ID; Opportunity Name; Opportunity Description; Created by; Date Created etc.
What I need to do is lookup each client, from the target clients listing, in the opportunities report to see whether an opportunity has been created; and if so, return the row of values (i.e. the Opportunity ID; Opportunity Name; Opportunity Description; Created by; Date Created) for that client. The result will be placed next to the name of the client in the target client worksheet.
I have a couple of problems. Initially I tried to use the VLOOKUP function to lookup the client name in the opportunities report and return the Opportunity ID (I then planned to use the same formula to return values from the other columns); however, as the client names in the target client listing were not always written the same way as they were in the opportunities report, the formula often returned #N/A. The formula I used was
=VLOOKUP(A8,'Opportunities Report'!A2:F51,2,FALSE)
So for example, the first client that I was looking up was written as “ABC Ltd” but in the opportunities report it was written as “ABC Limited”.
My second problem was that for some clients, there were multiple opportunities listed in the opportunities report. Where this was the case, there was a separate row (repeating the client name in the first column) for each opportunity created. I think that was messing up my VLOOKUP formula as well.
Is there a way to look up the client name, from the target client listing, in the opportunities report even if it’s slightly different and return the row of values for each opportunity created for that client on a separate row?

I totally understand how to make the combobox under form controls now but I am not having any success with the indirect function I was using as a list now that I have a combo box. I have attached the current form I am working on that just shows the list function still. How to convert this over to combo boxes with the indirect function?
I attached a second form with the feature I am asking about. It is just lacking the third list that I now have in place. (on the 1st attachment).
