Excel Links Only Updates When Source Workbook Is Open?
Mar 24, 2014
I built a template which pulls data from the source file using formulas. the problem is formulas doesn't give any error it updates the right value when the source workbook is open.
I Thought problem could be with the formula and tried just Source A1=destination A1. it also updates only if the source file is open. when the source file is closed it shows the last captured value.
The source file is on the (Work) Network Drive and is accessible to few people. my template is password protected (tabs) so formulas cannot be deleted.

I am try to copy a worksheet "exactly" from one workbook to another, i.e. all formulas and range names reference the new workbook and not link back to to the workbook they were copied from. The code below brings the formulas and named ranges over still referencing the source workbook: SourceWB.Sheets(sht).Copy after:=TargetWB.Sheets(sht)

I'im using an index - match - match formula with links to an external file.
Everything works fine until I close the source workbook. At that moment the liks break. The error I'm getting is #REF!.
I suspect the reason is that the source data are in form of an official table. I tried some formulas with data in the same workbook but outside the table and they keep working after the source file is closed.
I really want to keep the source data in a form of an official excel table.

I have a workbook that has many cells that link to a server on the other side of the planet. If I manually open this workbook I get the "This workbook contains links to other data sources." And the option to "Update" or "Don't Update"
If I choose to not update, everything works great. If I choose to update, the worksheet takes 10-15 minutes to open. I have tried to go to tools-->options-->Edit and uncheck "ask to update automatic links" but this makes the default behavior updating. I want to open this workbook using a scheduled task and a batch file, and have it not update, and then run a macro. Any suggestions on how to do this?

I have a macro where I try to edit the links after I open the workbook. I used the macro recorder to get the code, and if I use it, it works great. However, when I try to insert some variables in the code, I get an error saying "Method 'ChangeLink' of object'_Workbook' failed. I don't know why I'm getting this error. Below is code.

Using Excel 2010.
I have a formula in a workbook that links to another workbook and returns a #VALUE! error. The formula is:
=OFFSET(INDEX('\srvrdatakenny cantrell$Kenny''s FolderPayroll[DI Staff List.xls]Sheet1'!$D$6:$D$60,MATCH(TRUE,'\srvrdatakenny cantrell$Kenny''s FolderPayroll[DI Staff List.xls]Sheet1'!$D$6:$D$60=B3,0)),0,2)
However, when I open the source workbook, the cell updates correctly. How can I get the cell's formula to update when the source data workbook is closed?

I'd prefer to edit links with the source workbook open, however I receive this error when I do "A formula in this worksheet contains one or more invalid references." I am able to edit links with the source workbook closed but this takes far too much time to be satisfied with that as the solution. I have used vlookup formulas and the index-match method and they both take about the same amount of time to update. I've separated each worksheet and used the "name manager" add-in and have searched all links for any type of error. I feel like I'm missing something. Is there a way to fix this "invalid reference" error so that I can edit my links with the source workbook open?

Doing Inventory on my excel sheet.
Every week I do inventory on my excel sheet, I have a link for every row and for the past months, I have been clicking through every link as I do my inventory. It's all fine and well until my inventory grew and now clicking through every link every week becomes frustrating.
I am looking for a code that when run will automatically open any hyperlink in column B if the value in column A is less than 0.

I am running a macro-enabled Excel 2010 file, and there is a link to another workbook that pops up every time I open it asking if I want to update. I have searched formulas and pages, and can't find where it's linking from. I searched the VBA module I've been working in, and I can't find the link. When I click Data->Edit Links->Break Links and confirm, nothing happens. It still shows up as linked, and still prompts me to update next time I open it. I'd really like to get this data link severed.

I have a master price list that will have items added or removed from it occasionally. I have sixty workbooks that contain detailed data on mixes of multiple products from the master price list. All the corresponding prices throughout the sixty workbooks are linked to their specific slot on the master price list. The problem: if the sixty workbooks are closed and anyone adds a new row to the master price list, when I open any of the workbooks the values update but the referenced cell does not.
So if the price for Product 25 is located in cell K118, and two products are added in above K118, when I open any of my mix sheets that contain Product 25 the linked cell should be to K120. But it's not doing it that way. It is holding on to the referenced K118 cell and updating the value to the wrong price.
I've played around with the VLOOKUP function but haven't been able to make it work. Linking the cell as I have has worked great, if I could just get it to adjust the reference as new rows are added to the source workbook.
I've figured out that it will update the workbooks when I add a row if all that are required are open when the addition is made. But my boss will not open sixty workbooks every time a change needs to be made to the master price list, which he controls.

I often have Excel sheets in which Excel tells me there are hyperlinks and content from other sources. I guess it happens because I copy something from one sheet to another.
First, is it possible to copy-and-paste from a sheet to another and only copy the concrete formulas and formats, and no source to the old file?
Secondly, how can I detect where these hyperlinks and links to other sources are? I see they exists, but I can't seem to find them. Does Excel have such function? Can I detect them with a VBA script?

I have 4 workbooks, all of them contain data that is managed by other teams at my company. I need to take all of this data, organize, and concatenate it into one sheet for myself, that I will then reference in other workbooks to various OTHER departments in our company that need the data for certain projects. I have the organization laid out in a lot of very complex formulas so that most of this is automated, and not manual.
I need a solution that can pull data from the 4 workbooks without locking them for use, to allow me to keep my document open all the time, and they can update theirs at their leisure. Everything works fine, until I hit the refresh button. Once this is hit, all of the linked documents are locked and cannot be opened, even in "Read Only" mode. Once I close the master document, the files are free to be opened. I know a workaround for now is that i can not "refresh" the document, but rather close and re open it for changes.
Some steps I have already tried :
1. Create an intermediary file that no one uses, and can be locked all day without a problem. This doesn't work for me since the intermediary file needs to be open to refresh, which locks the original source doc, leaving me in the same place as before.
2.Modify the connection string to display "Mode=Read;" instead of "Mode=Share Deny Read"
3.Create a new connection with "Read" only selected in the Advanced Tab

Need to create Working order (in Excel 2007) for filling machine in my factory. Working order is changeable from day to day and the deference is product quantity. Product quantity in working order [File - Working order] is changing according to the each sales plan [7-Jan-13, 8-Jan-13] - (File Working order is Linked to the appropriate sales plan in this case - [7-Jan-13]).
Anyway, I need to change the source workbook "sales plan" from [7-Jan-13] to [8-Jan-13] by changing source workbook name in red cell [File - Working order] and not to browsing location?
All source workbooks [sales plan 7-Jan-13, 8-Jan-13]are at the same location in the same folder, only difference is the source workbook names. So, is it possible to change source workbook name (File - Working order - red cell) for all external references (File - Working order - green cells) at the same time, and avoid annoying browsing?

I have created a spreadsheet some time ago and have been asked to improve on it but I'm rusty with VBA.
I have an automated ordering system that saves each sent order as the date e.g "05-04-2013.xls" but the management team want a graph with the data for the last 4 weeks compared. I have created a seperate workbook called "consumables report.xls" which has a column with the products listed followed by columns "Quantity" and "cost" which is repeated for the 4 weeks of the month.
I want to add a button to prompt the user to choose the saved order e.g "05-04-2013.xls" (all orders saved in same directory) to copy and paste the quantity and cost columns (c8,D69) into "consumables report.xls". I got this to work earlier but it would only paste the formulas and not the values. So I need
A prompt to open workbook
Copy range (c8,d69)
Close work sheet
Paste special .value (c8,D69)
I dont care if it has to open the workbook to copy the data as this will only be used once a month so it dosnt matter how slow the code is.
week 1 week 2 week 3 week 4
Product
quantity
cost
quantity
cost
cost

I am using Excel 2007 on Windows XP professional.
The workbook is called EA.xlsm, and contains dozens of charts, tables and pivot tables - all of which pull their data from external files in the same folder. In case it matters, the folder also contains a Word 2007 document which contains embedded charts form the EA.xlsm file and lays them out for printing.
My problem is that all of a sudden, when I try to open the EA.xlsm file, it gives me two consecutive error messages, as follows:
Microsoft Office has identified a potential security concern.
File path: c:My DocumentsEA.xlsm
Data connections have been blocked. If you choose to enable data connections, your computer may no longer be secure. Do not enable the content unless you trust the source of the file. [Enable] / [Disable]
to which I click enable, and then....
Microsoft Office has identified a potnetial security concern.

Automatic update of links has been disabled. If you choose to enable automatic update of links, your computer may no longer be secure. Do not enable the content unless you trust the source of the file. [Enable] / [Disable]
to which I also click enable.
Excel then opens, but I just get the program with a blue screen. i.e. it looks like you have opened Excel, but not opened a file yet. However, if I try to close Excel, it asks me if I want to save changes to EA.xlsm, and if I try to open EA.xlsm again - it tells me that it is already open. Also, if I press Alt+F11 to open the VBA console - I can see the names of all of the sheet tabs in the file - but when I close the VBA console, it looks as though I do not have a file open again.
I suspect that somehow, somewhere the file is open, but I dont know what I need to do to be able to see/edit it. Or even worse - if it has become corrupt. It would take me about a month to put this file back together again from scratch.

My son just upgraded my computer from 2000 to xp - a new application on a new hard drive. in the process, Excel was upgraded from 97 SR-1 to 97 SR-2.
My checkbook is on excel, and I really need to open it! We just moved to a new location, with the typical problems with email, internet etc.
I can open workbooks without macros. But I cannot open any with macros.
I get this message:
"Could not register the Visual Basic environment."
When that window is closed, the next one says:
"An error occured when initializing the VBA libraries (126)"

I have a large workbook 45MB with 40 sheets each containing a section that links to the server to update itself when the workbook calculates. With that being said it's impossible to have the workbook on Automatic calculate because the update process can take about 7-10 minutes so its set to manual. However, I would like to prevent the links from updating (its one link that is used to update the file) by possibly a macro that runs when the workbook opens and prevent the update link from running when I press F9 to manually calculate.

Assume I open with Excel 2007 three different Excel workbooks
excel1.xls
excel2.xls
excel3.xls
How can I switch from one Workbook to another?
I found no "open document" menu where all currently opened excel documents are listed.
The only way I found so far is by clicking on another preview in Win 7 Taskbar.
But I guess there must be a way INSIDE Excel as well.
Where can I find (and click) all open excel workbooks/files?

I wanted to run a batch file which does something like,
Dir /b >Test.csv
Start Test.csv
And then runs an Excel macro once the workbook is open.
I looked into this and discovered that it’s not really that possible to run an excel macro through batch file but other options were to use ‘Workbook_Open’ etc.
I thought this might cause problems because Test.csv doesn’t contain a macro to auto open and because csv’s usually don’t like macros.
I do however have personal.xlsb which opens every time if that helps.

I am using Excel 2010 and late binding to generate reports. The sheets are blank and unused. I have the UserForm being opened on Workbook_Open and the actual VBA for doing the work in a separate macro in the workbook. All the posts I have found are dealing with accessing cells from the UserForm and I haven't found any dealing with connecting a macro to the UserForm output.
My question is this: I want to return from the UserForm the flags of which reports to run to the (unopened) macro containing the code to do so. How do I open the macro and pass the variables to it?
The UserForm is creatively called "SelectionForm" and the macro is called "DailyFTP" with a Main sub as the entry. I know I can use the code under to capture the radio button and checkbox choices. I have other variables like the names of files set as global variables in the DailyFTP macro. The macro doesn't exist until SelectionForm opens it, so they must be set after the macro is in memory.
