Refresh XML Data In A Map If The Source File Is Updated

Apr 7, 2009

If I have a spreadsheet with some data loaded in through XML and viewed as a
map, what is the VBA command to reload/reimport the source XML data?

The scenario is that the source data (XML) may change at any time, and I would like to reflect this to the presentation layer (excel) at regular intervals. I have a loop set up but cannot find the command to reset the source XML data.

Can't Refresh Pivot Table When Using External Data Source

Apr 30, 2014

I am using an Excel file (Raw.xlsx) to store my raw data, and take another Excel file (Pivot.xlsx) to make PivotTable from Raw.xlsx

When generating the PivotTable, every works fine. When click [Refresh] in the Raw.xlsx, whatever changes been made in the Raw.xlsx can "sync" to the Pivot.xlsx

However, once I save and reopen the Pivot.xlsx, I can't refresh the PivotTable anymore. I've tried changing Data Source, but it doesn't work.

Automatic Refresh Of Pivot Table On Changes In External Data Source?

Dec 4, 2013

I have a pivot table report connected to an external data source (OLAP cube).I want to automatically refresh the pivot table report everytime the OLAP cube data changes.

I know we can use Automatic refresh on open of workbook or time intervals after which to refresh .But i want the auto refresh to work even if the workbook is already open and there is no definite time interval after which the cube is likely to change.SO,by defining intervals for auto refresh i do not intend to waste time refreshing even if there is no change.

There are multiple pivot table reports and pivot charts connected to the same OLAP cube.

Macro/function To Take Data From Source File Into Base File

Jun 24, 2006

I have a base excel file for summarizing some data, the problem is that the data comes from a different excel spreadsheet. What I want to do is make a function that pulls the data from another spreadsheet into my base file. It would be easy if it were just one excel sheet, but this job would require where the data is pulled from a data file which has many modified versions.

Can anyone tell me how to do this? The files with the data will be structured the exact same but with different data entered in. I just want a button so I can click the file I want the data from and have it show up on my summarizing base file.

Data Connection Locking Source File

Jan 10, 2012

I have 2 excel files. One excel file (File A) is a basically a source file on a shared network that users input data into. The second excel file (File B) I created in hopes of basically using to analyze the data in File A. I used a data connection to access the data on File A while on File B. The issue I'm facing now is that when I refresh the connection, it locks File A from being opened until I close File B. Currently, I have the data connection to refresh only manually, so I'll open File B, refresh it, save, close, and then re-open without refreshing, so that way File A only stays locked for that short amount of time. Is there any way to make it such that when I refresh the connection, it doesn't lock File A?

Pull Data For A Discrete Month Into A Grid From A Source File Containing A Full Year

Feb 14, 2013

I'm trying to streamline some processes at work and have encountered a bit of an issue.

I have a source file containing a grid of data (9 columns) with a series of dates they relate to down the left side e.g. 13-Feb-2013. This data covers a whole year.

What I want to do is pull through data relating to a discrete month into a grid in a seperate workbook.

I have a feeling that date ranges and possibly some kind of lookup might be useful but am struggling to see how to pull it all together.

Centrally Updated File

Jun 22, 2007

I have developed a system for logging phone calls in Excel which will be used by a team of 3-4 people in a small call centre type environment. Each operator will have their own copy of the application which will independently contain the data for their own calls.

However, what I need to do is have some way of regularly updating everyone’s data to a central workbook so that all the operators have access to reasonably up to date information from all the other operators.

I can handle the actual transfer of data from one book to another and perhaps using an OnTime procedure to handle the regularity, but the problem I have is that with regular updating, there will inevitably be read-only issues which are going to make the application crash.

I was thinking maybe have the data update run from the central workbook itself to avoid this, but was wondering if anyone had any bright ideas. Some sort of file sharing or something maybe?

Pivot Table Retains Old Source Data In Addition To New Source Data

Sep 7, 2006

I have a report that was created for 2005 that contains two worksheets: a "source data" worksheet and a " pivot table" worksheet. I cleared out the 2005 data in the "source data" worksheet and replaced it with 2006 data...after this I refreshed the Pivot Table and everything seemed fine. When looking at the file size I noticed that it was almost twice its original size....upon further investigation I found that the Pivot Table was internally holding onto the old source data (the "Show" functionality of the rows/columns in the table lists the 2005 row/column headers as well as the 2006 headers....even though no data from 2005 is shown in the Pivot Table).

Does anyone know how to purge the old data from the internal Pivot Table memory?

I hope this is enough information....let me know if you need more.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Jon

Updated The File Name Changes To Reflect The Revision

Mar 17, 2009

I have a spreadsheet that references another spreadsheet, however the other spreadsheet will get updated from time to time. When it's updated the file name changes to reflect the revision:

"C:Projects9-022_Tunisia1_Design9-022-R00-Inst_Database.xls"

When this file is revised the "...R001..." will increment with each revision but the rest of the file will stay the same.

Sometimes I have to reference a file in another directory:
"C:Projects9-030_Brazil1 Design9-030-R00-Inst_Database.xls"

I was planning on placing information in the following cells of this spreadsheet ("C:Projects9-022_Tunisia1_Design9-022-R001-Cause_&_Effects.xls):

Cell A1 - Project Number (i.e. 09-022, or 09-030)
Cell A2 - Project Name (i.e. Tunisia, or Brazil)
Cell A3 - File Rev Number (i.e. 1, 2, 3, etc.)

I was thinking my "INDIRECT.EXE" would look something like this:
=INDIRECT.EXE("'C:Projects"&A1&"1_Design["&A1&"_"&A2&"-R00"&A3&"-Cause_&_Effects.XLS]Index'!Q5")

The value on the spreadsheet tab "Index" that I'm referencing in cell Q5, is "FG-5901" but all I'm getting in the spreadsheet were this formula resides, is an error "#NAME?"

Part of my problem is that I don't fully understand the function of the "&" symbol in the formula. Sometimes I've seen it placed on both sides of a cell reference (i.e. &A1&), and other time only at the being (i.e. &A1).

Date Not Being Updated When Open File

Apr 2, 2014

Previous to a PC meltdown a few months ago, when I opened my monthly customer list file the account date would automatically update to the current date. After the PC repair, reinstall of MS Office 2002 (same version as before the PC death) and copying of documents back to their old locations, I now have to update this manually for all accounts each time I open it. I have searched through the options and customize menus but there is no mention of this setting. Before, it just did it from day one (5 years ago) without any setup.

How do I get back the old auto-date update preference?

How To Get Data From Web And Make Sure That Existing Table Is Updated With New Data

Feb 12, 2014

getting data externally from web and also keeping the previous data prior to the refresh.

My external table/data has 10 rows reporting values per day (10 days data table).

I can link the table to my sheet, however what I can not do is to create an offlinek, year to date table in the sheet which captures the rolling 10 days (everytime it is refreshed) without losing the prior days.

For ex:

External bank Data

Day Ratio
02/05/2014 0.15%
02/04/2014 0.13%
02/03/2014 0.14%
01-31-2014 0.23%
01-30-2014 0.16%
01-29-2014 0.16%
01-28-2014 0.18%
01-27-2014 0.19%
01-24-2014 0.19%
01-23-2014 0.21%

Above table changes on a daily basis, only reporting the last ten days.

How can I capture this data on a rolling basis, i.e. in a year to date format, so that everytime I refresh, the internal table gets updated with the new data.

Using VBA To Open And Close Source File

Feb 1, 2010

I am working with a bunch of files to do a dashboard. I have the main file which shows end results and what my users will see "Dashboard". I have about 10-15 files which I export weekly from MS Access. and I have the "Dashboard Data" file. In this file I have a sheet which links all the information for the files exported from MS Access. In here I have named ranges and dynamic ranges plus additional columns created to look up information in other tables. I use this file as my source data for my Dashboard File so that I can reduce the size of the actually dashboard. Dashboard Data file is about 5.5 mb and my Dashboard is 300kb. I have 12 branches that need to view the data over a radius of a hundred miles so the smal file are better.

My problem: I can get the Dashboard Data file to update without opening all the 10-15 other files. I cant however make the Dashboard file update without opening the Dashboard Data file. I have it to auto update without prompting but its still tells me that it cannot update. I was wondering if there is some VBA code I could use that would work like this:

I open the Dashboard File, Dashboard Data file opens so that Dashboard file updates and then close Dashboard Data File so that the user never has to see the Dashboard Data file. I dont want them to see it or have access to it.
