Return Value & Address Of Named Range
Feb 20, 2008
how to get the value of a cell by its name. For example, i give cell B2 Name "Hello" and value "2". how to use vba to get the value of 2 using its name 'Hello', but not the cell 'B2'. Somethings people delete and add rows or columns and using range may lost the right value.

I have a named range that expands and contracts based upon the amount of data that is in some column. Call it AllData_UsedRange.
I have another named range that actually refers to a range. Call it AllData.
Column A
Row2 56
Row3 44
Row4 65
AllData is a named range that refers to the range A2:A65536
AllData_UsedRange refers to A2:A4 by way of this formula.
=OFFSET(AllData,0,0,COUNTA(AllData))
How to I obtain an address of AllData_UsedRange in VBA code?
These do not work...
ThisWorkbook.Names("AllData_UsedRange").RefersToRange.Address
Evaluate(ThisWorkbook.Names("AllData_UsedRange"))

I'm having a 'mental block' day. I have a Named Ranges in a spreadsheet (Office XP). The range is defined as =OFFSET( ' Stock List'!$K$1,0,0, COUNTA('Stock List'!$F:$F),4)
i.e. starts at K1, is 4 cols wide and as deep as there are occupied cells in col F. (as I understand it). I want to treat this as an array in VBA and use 'x' and 'y' as indexes into the array. I want to either get the value from a single cell, or set the value in a single cell, which contain a string. I know its not correct but I have the formulae as follows, and for the life of me I cant figure out what the correct formula is -duhh!!
Dim x As Integer, y As Integer, z As String
x=3 'dummy test code
y=2
Range("MakerExtractArea").Offset(x, y).Value = "dummy"
z= Range("MakerExtractArea").Offset(1, 0).Value

construct a formula that finds a value in a range , then returns the cell address of that value.
Say, i wanted to find the amount 12385 from another sheet , range C2:AA12 (contains only numbers , no duplicates). result should give me the address of that value.
I have tried the address & match function but gives me an N/A error.

when I use the range.find function to find a certain value in a column.. i want to return the address of the cell.. and save it in a range variable. how would I do that?
so this is what i have now.. but Rng does not return as a range.. it returns 69... when i use ctrl + G and type ?rng
set rng = .range(A:A).find(what:=69, After:=.Cells(1, 1), Searchorder:=xlByRows, searchdirection:=xlPrevious)
ok so say it picks up..... cell A69... how do i get it to save range A69

I have a list of ID's on one sheet that are also located in a large matrix on another sheet.
This macro uses the Find_Range function to find each ID within the matrix and return the column header where the ID was first located.
There is also a line which return a list of ranges, indicating all the places where the ID was found.
What I want is to convert the list of ranges into a list of corresponding column headers (ie row 1 of all columns in the range)
' Number of id's in list
RowCnt = Application.WorksheetFunction. CountA(Columns("A"))
For I = 2 To RowCnt
LookFor = Sheets("ID List").Range("A" & I)
Set InRng = Sheets("Matrix").Cells
Set Found = Find_Range(LookFor, InRng, xlValues, xlWhole)
On Error Resume Next ' If value is not found
Sheets("RateID Count").Range("C" & I) = Sheets("Matrix") _
.Cells(1, Range(Found.Address).Column) ' Return column header
Sheets("ID List").Range("D" & I) = Found.Address(False, False) ' Return cell address or range of addresses
On Error Goto 0

I am trying to return a cell address range based on values in different columns. Attached is an example.
In Column A1 I have "Range" and below that a set of numbers from 1 to 31.
In Column B1 the name "Test" is used as an identifier, below that are the letters "a" though to "e". Once the letter "e" is reached the identifier "Test" is moved to column C "C6" and the alphabet continues from "f" down to "j". This process is repeated through the rest of the alphabet and the identifier moved to the next column after every 5th letter.
What I want to do is as follows:-
I would like to know the cell addresses of all instances of "test" from Column A numbers 6 throught to 24. The result should be C7:C12, D14:18 & D20:24. The results should ignore all instances of the identifier "test" and only return the cells which contain the letters of the alphabet.
I have tried using Vlookup which works well if the letters are all in the same column and I have incorporated the Address and Match formulas to return the range if all the alphabets are in the same column, but I do not know how to do this if the identifier "test" and letters move to a differnt column.

I am performing a lookup using the populare user defined function nlookup, which does not take a lookuparray argument to find lookup values. But I only want to return lookup values that fall into a certain array. To accomplish this, I figured out that I need a way to specify a condition of the type "if cell address of lookup value falls within range"
It should be possible if I find a way to return the cell address of the nlookup value, but as nlookup is not limited by a lookuparray argument, so I was not able to use the address/index/match that come up in similar questions.

I have a named range which refers to: =MATCH(LARGE($G$5:$G$68,ROW(G5)-4),G$5:G$68,0)+4. It is supposed to find the largest figure in the adjacent column, list its row in cell H5, then the second largest for cell H6 and so on until the end of the data. The data in column G is dynamic and some cells will contain "0" with certain sections of data thus why I need a formula and cannot just use sort each time.
My problem is that when I use the formula as a named range I get "#N/A" and when I evaluate the formula I will get the answer but in array brackets (e.g.{17}) before the final step turns it to "#N/A". The formula will work fine if inputted directly into the cell but as the same formula will be used over three columns and numerous rows I would much prefer to use a named range.

I have four named ranges (Segment, Keyword, Impressions and Dropdown) and I would like to create a formula-based ranking of keywords by impressions and clicks. Using the following array formula, I am able to return the correct values for impressions or clicks:
{=LARGE(IF(Segment=DropDown,Impressions),$H7)} where $H7 is the number ranking 1, 2, 3 etc.
My question is what array formula could be used to find which row in the array returned that number and then pulls the data from the same row in the other named ranges?
Essentially find row of {=LARGE(IF(Segment=DropDown,Impressions),$H7)} but return Keyword and Clicks on that row.
Other Notes: I cannot use pivot tables and some values might be the same which would make Vlookups not accurate for duplicate values.
Link to an example document to clarify this. [URL] .......

here are multiple named ranges so using intersect is not feasible. Essentially, through code, I will be given a range and I need to determine if that range if part of a named range.

I am having an issue when I try a chart a named range. The named range "Refers To" is
Code:
=OFFSET($A$1,(MATCH("Kevin",$A:$A,0)-1),,,COUNTA(INDIRECT(ADDRESS((MATCH("Kevin",$A:$A,0)-1),1,1,1)
&":"&ADDRESS((MATCH("Kevin",$A:$A,0)-1),100,1,1))))
As far as I can tell, the formula works just fine. If you look in the Name Manager and check on that Name, the highlighted box shows up exactly what it should and if you do a simple MAX test, it displays the correct MAX value from that range.
The problem comes in when I try and add it to a chart. Instead of a displaying all the values in the range, it displays nothing. Doesn't flag up any errors, just nothing.
The reason I chose to do it this way is that the table contents could change on a daily basis and so could the position of the row and I don't want to have to keep changing the references in the graph so make sure the right data is being displayed. Is it just that charts don't play well with the INDIRECT function?

I'm trying to make my named ranges remember the values of the last active cells used within another named range. The purpose of this is to make my charts dynamically change dependant on two criteria selected. My spreadsheet currently updates itself as and when I change the active cell within a single named range, dynamically changing the chart data by using Lookup based on the active cells value. However I want to get away from having several charts showing, I would like to have a single chart which dynamically changes based on a second selection. So the first selection is for a department (Facility) which changes the chart data relevant to that department, the second selection is to dynamically change the chart shown for the pre selected department.
Picture2.jpg
Using the following code when updating just one criteria with several charts
VB:
Private Sub Worksheet_SelectionChange(ByVal Target As Range)
If Not Application.Intersect(ActiveCell, [MeasureType]) Is Nothing Then
[valMeasurePicked] = ActiveCell.Value [code].....
which works fine but I'm not sure how to add a second selection criteria because my code uses Activecell. I thought that the VBA needed to set the last used value of a range as a variable and therefore allow the second criteria to be selected but am not sure how to put it into practice.

Merge two columns into one list in excel
I would like to combine List1 and List2 into a 3rd named range called List3. I was wondering if this were possible without using any additional cells/columns (i.e. I don't want to use Column C like in the example shown in the link above).
Here's the formula from the example:
Code:
=IFERROR(INDEX(List1,ROWS(C1:$C$1)),IFERROR(INDEX(List2,ROWS(C1:$C$1)-ROWS(List1)),""))
I've played around with it, but could not come with any that worked.

I have a workbook full of worksheets like so:
Main
Second
Third
Fourth
The main worksheet is a roll up page of sorts. It contains all of the information on all three other tabs. All updates entered on the main sheet will be distributed accordingly to each sheet the needs it VIA hlookup. At times, certain updates will be highlighted certain colors. From what I understand, there is no way to copy the color formatting using formulas and return the value.
So, I am trying to figure out a way to use VBA for this. I have dabbled a bit in VBA have think I have found it, except I have run into a substantial road block.
I will use the .hasformula to first check all cells in a range on the other sheets. If there is a formula, it will be an Hlookup only. Once it finds the formula, it then needs to copy the color of the source cell the hlookup is using to return data. It needs to copy the color of the cell, not the color of the text.

I have a formula that basically work, except is really complicated and slows the whole sheet down and then, for some reason, returns a circular referencing error or something. There must be a better way!
So the back story is that I have a spreadsheet that I'm using to track ~1200 employees, including salary, job title and, where I'm having trouble, reporting line.
Column [R] is the Line Manager (direct manager) and Column [S] is Department Head. Columns [T] - [Y] is "Manager", "Manager +1" (manager's manager), "Manager +2" (manager's manager's Manager), etc up to Manager +5.
'Line Manager' is input manually. 'Manager' = 'Line Manager'. Manager+1 to +5 just vlooks up off the same sheet. This part works fine and will update the whole reporting line if you change the manager.
Department head is where I'm having a problem! Essentially what I'm looking for is for the formula to look at the 5 cells to the right (the manager +# columns) and look for 'Mr Boss' and return one cell to the left since department heads report the the boss. There is one exception, its that some immediate reports of Lucy Lawful also are counted as Department Heads. For this purpose I vlooked up this list of exceptions on another sheet. My formula is this (entered as an array):
=IF(ISTEXT(T5),IF(OR(OFFSET(INDIRECT(ADDRESS(MAX((T5:Y5="Mr Boss")*ROW(T5:Y5)),MAX((T5:Y5="Mr Boss")*COLUMN(T5:Y5)),4)),0,-2,1)=Vlookups!H:H),OFFSET(INDIRECT(ADDRESS(MAX((T5:Y5="Mr Boss")*ROW(T5:Y5)),MAX((T5:Y5="Mr Boss")*COLUMN(T5:Y5)),4)),0,-2,1),OFFSET(INDIRECT(ADDRESS(MAX((T5:Y5="Mr Boss")*ROW(T5:Y5)),MAX((T5:Y5="Mr Boss")*COLUMN(T5:Y5)),4)),0,-1,1)),"")
Below is an example file. In my real file the formula works for everyone, not sure why its not working for half the employee now, but probably cos it's a useless formula.

I'm looking for a Formula in order to retrieve all addresses of all matches equal to the search criteria located in cell: E2
The results are hand-typed in col. G
This is a case of a TWO-DIMENSIONAL "Arbitrary Lookup" Arbitrary.
The range A1:C10 was named: TBL and the formula should refer to TBL as it can be dynamic in size.
PS: can anybody tell me why I don't get any E-Mails when an answer is posted?
